This week, Matt tackles the Von Trapp Pilsner, a beer with a name that inevitably sparks Sound of Music jokes—except this time, the jokes are actually true. Yes, Von Trapp Brewing in Vermont is run by the same family that inspired the famous musical, and they've made a name for themselves crafting traditional German-style lagers. Matt shares the story of how this beer's arrival in Florida sent local craft beer fans into a frenzy and recalls his first, underwhelming experience with Von Trapp Pilsner. But after giving it a second chance, does it live up to the hype? He dives into a BJCP-style evaluation, scoring it 38 out of 50, with praise for its crispness and clarity—though lingering bitterness and an aroma-flavor mismatch kept it from scoring higher. In this episode: A deep dive into the actual connection between the Von Trapp family and this brewery. The Florida craft beer community's tendency to overhype new arrivals (and why Matt's still guilty of it himself). A hilarious twist on the usual one-star review segment—since Von Trapp Pilsner lacked enough bad reviews, Matt instead reads brutal one-star reviews of Miller Lite, proving that some people take their pilsners very seriously. Listen now on Neozaz.com, BigMonsterBrewing.com, or your favorite podcast platform. If you love traditional lagers, craft beer hype cycles, or just a good beer rant, this one's for you!

Most Important Characters - Maria, Mother Abbess, and Captain Von Trapp It is the story of Maria and Captain Von Trapp, but ultimately the Mother Abbess is the one who keeps these two headed towards each other. And the nuns all end up saving the family in the end! Least Important Character - Rolf When we looked at characters the story could have done without, it was hard to choose one! The Sound of Music is so well written there aren't any characters that aren't important for one way or another. But. When we looked at the role of Rolf, if his relationship with Lisel just didn't exist, the movie would lose charm (No “16 Going on 17??”) but we feel like all the characters would still end up where they did in the end. What if Maria had become a nun after she runs away from the Von Trapp family and the Captain's affections? Would Maria have a better life or Captain Von Trapp? Maria as a nun. It just doesn't fit her character! But we think Captain Von Trapp at least would see and understand his children, thanks to Maria's example. So he would have them to focus on moving forward without her. But Maria would have just been sad and lonely

While popular movies tell finite stories, the real lives of the people they feature don't stop when the final credits roll. So, it was up to the von Trapp family—whose story was told with huge dramatic license in The Sound of Music—to write their own next chapters. They did so by establishing a popular, Austrian-inspired family lodge in northern Vermont—then, about 15 years ago, they opened a brewery just down the hill. They launched with the goal of producing finely crafted European-style lagers, befitting the family's heritage. Craft lagers weren't exactly lighting up the sales charts at the time, but it was a long-term bet from a family that thinks in generations rather than quarterly returns. Now, with a beautiful automated Rolec brewhouse and an attached beer hall, they're producing award-winning lagers at scale—including the Oktoberfest that we named one of our Best 18 Beers in 2018 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-18-beers-of-2018/)—all while making very intentional decisions about process and ingredients. In this episode, brewing operations director Tom Everett and quality manager Jack Van Pappegem talk through their approach to ingredients and process, including: avoiding decoction of many pale lagers, despite having an automated and dedicated decoction vessel finishing pale lagers dry, but not too dry using small amounts of specialty malts to build character managing the grain crush keeping a tight focus on pH strategies to promote healthy fermentations selecting yeast for the ideal character lagering in cylindroconical unitanks brewing Oktoberfest lager as well as dark lagers And more. Hello and welcome to episode 96. We are still cruising on the Quantum of the Seas in the south pacific. In this episode we are going to share all about the many food options, the fabulous and not so fabulous shows and entertainers and activities on the ship. Listen as I laugh out loud as Lyle admits to a hilarious counting error. You will hear all about how we crashed (or rather our friend) gate-crashed a karaoke night with Sweet Caroline and the Von Trapp family and what exactly happened at the hypnotist show – as the same friend took to the stage and entertained the whole crowd. Stay listening to hear about what we thought was going to be totally ridiculous, but actually turned out to be our absolute favourite thing to do on the ship. We couldn't get enough of this crazy fun activity and I would go cruising again just to do this. We finish this week's podcast with a little singalong with Lyle and I serenading you. Episode 42: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Join us for a discussion of the beloved musical The Sound of Music. Robert Wise directs this film adaptation of Rogers and Hammerstein's final musical about the Von Trapp family in Austria in the last golden days of the 1930s. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer star. It won the Best Picture Academy Award (TM) for 1965, and ranks #28 on our countdown. Tune in to see how we think it holds up and which of us did their homework. Join us next week for The Departed, which may or may not be a ghost story. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.
In Virtuosa Society Podcast's inaugural “Between the Bio” episode, Katie Harman sits down with Sofi, Melanie and Amanda Von Trapp for a candid conversation about sisterhood, singing, individuality and collaboration. Episode 6 of the Virtuosa Society Podcast featured the hidden story of sisters Jane and Cassandra Austen. The Von Trapp Sisters, just like Jane and Cassandra, share a famous heritage and an even tighter bond. “Between the Bio” interviews are meant to dig a little deeper between the highlight's in a creative's bio, into the spaces and pockets of their experience where the nuances, challenges, truths and growth happen. Because we don't talk about them nearly enough. And because conversations like this are vital for understanding the uniqueness and sameness of life as a female creative. TOP TAKEAWAYS: What could change if you asked yourself this question: “What would make this (mood/task/day/moment/action) feel 5% better?” Small goals for the win! One of the most fundamental things we've leaned into and accepted this year is the need for a team — for community care, instead of just self-care. Emotions are necessary for communication — they are the crucial information that takes our experience of the world from a line drawing to full Technicolor. And we won't be debating that emotions are crucial and not something to be “eliminated” at work anymore. Casey Erin Clark is a voice, public speaking, and communication coach, performer, author, entrepreneur, podcast host, and leader in both the entertainment and business worlds. She is a fierce advocate for gender justice and spends her days speaking, teaching, and writing about the power of women's voices, while seizing fulfilling opportunities to perform on screen and stage. In 2014, Casey and Julie Fogh co-founded Vital Voice Training, a voice and speech coaching company on a mission to change the conversation about what leaders are “supposed” to sound like and empower everyone to own the power of their full vocal instrument and presence. Casey hails from the cornfields of southern Illinois (where she grew up singing with her family Von Trapp-style) and has a BFA in musical theater from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also coaches musical theater pros of all ages, is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, performed at the 2013 Oscars with the Les Miserables movie cast, and sings with the Grammy-nominated and Tony-honored Broadway Inspirational Voices choir. Recommending books and breakfast restaurants is her love language. Will perform the Lafayette speed rap from Hamilton on demand. Julie Fogh is a voice coach and interpersonal communications specialist who works with actors and business leaders helping them navigate their individual tensions and blocks, revealing the personal power and unique and captivating humanity that exists in all of us. Through Vital Voice Training, Julie and her co-founder Casey Erin Clark blend the toolbox of the professional actor with their powerful frameworks for embracing one's authentic speaking voice to businesses, schools, and organizations all over the country. Julie was raised in Seattle and earned her BA in Theatre and Women Studies from University of Washington. She earned an MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University, a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that engaged with the physical body, the emotional life, imagination, use of language, character construction, non-verbal communication and the truth of the moment. She has studied with the Moscow Art Theatre and University of Copenhagen and has studied Meisner Technique with Kathryn Gately, Michael Chekhov Technique with Deborah Robertson, and Movement and Period Style with Lloyd Williamson. She loves YA novels and her cranky rescue cat, Ashland.
The hills are alive with — you guessed it — THE SOUND OF MUSIC! In this week's episode, Zoe is joined by her cousin, Kelly Jewell, (we missed you, Hannah!) to discuss the 1965 classic film starring the iconic Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The pair share “a few of their favorite things” (get it?!) about the movie, their favorite and least favorite songs, which Von Trapp is the worst, and dive into the movie's biggest questions. They also discuss why the film is so timeless, whether they'd want to see a remake, and even fancast F1 drivers (and principals!) as the Von Trapp family.
