Shelby is a licensed social worker in the state of Michigan who specializes in complex trauma. Shelby graduated with her master of social work degree in 2020 from Grand Valley State University and has since worked as a children's homebased therapist in community mental health, and as an outpatient therapist in private practice with adults. She has experience working with children, families, perinatal mothers, and adults. Just like Kina, her favorite clients to work with are young adults who have struggled to gain deeper healing in therapy. As a trauma therapist, Shelby uses a variety of modalities and interventions, including Internal Family Systems/parts work, Polyvagal Theory, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, and Somatic Experiencing to attempt deeper healing and meaning. IFS is one of her favorite modalities because she has seen so many clients resonate with it (including herself), and has also seen such powerful shifts in how clients relate to themselves, the people in their lives, and to the world. IFS is an approach to complex trauma treatment, as well as various other treatments, that aims to integrate all "parts" or personalities of a person into a more functional and accepting whole system that is led by the self. The goal is to heal "wounded" parts and restore mental balance. She has found this modality especially effective for clients who tend to have dissociative symptoms and/or attachment/relational trauma. Shelby is currently based in Muskegon Michigan; for more information on her or how to work with her, you can find her information on Tiktok (@Shelby_thetherapist)."
Hi everyone and welcome back to another episode, this week I'm joined by Shelby Williams, dancer at Royal Ballet of Flanders. I chat to Shelby about her whole journey, from feeling behind during her training, audition horror stories as well as the struggles of not having your contract's renewed. There is so much great advice in this episode so I hope you stick around! And if you didn't already know, Shelby started Biscuit Ballerina, and we chat about why she started it and what it has been like running it alongside her dance career, as well as expanding to work with brands such as Imperfect Pointes. I've managed to get you a *cheeky* discount code to Imperfect Pointes to help make your switch to sustainable dancewear a little easier, but you will have to listen to find out! You can find Shelby here: @shelbygrooves @biscuitballerina Have an amazing week, wherever you are Romy xx
FIFTY EPISODES?! I am filled today with so much happiness and gratitude that I have been able to now publish fifty episodes of conversations that are so dear to my heart. I have met the most amazing people, and I have so much hope for the direction of the ballet world. It is therefore with great pride, gratitude, and excitement to present to you… The one and only Biscuit Ballerina. Shelby Williams is a soloist with the Royal Ballet of Flanders & the creator of Biscuit Ballerina, a satirical ballet account that addresses unhealthy perfectionism & advocates for mental health awareness. Biscuit Ballerina has been featured in the New York Times, Pointe Magazine, Dance Europe, & Dance Spirit, and Dance Europe Magazine nominated her for best performance by a female dancer. It was SUCH an honor to get some one-on-one facetime with the ballerina we all know, love, and can totally relate to. Her satirical IG and website not only crack us up, but help us through those tough times of perfectionism and allow us space to laugh at ourselves. If laughter is the best medicine, she has earned that MD! Matt talks to Shelby Williams-Gonzalez, President and CEO of Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles, an organization that believes in the transformational power of the arts, and whose mission is to engage young people in the creative process in order to shape a society of creative, confident and collaborative individuals. The pair discuss the transition from artist to executive; how to build a strong team; the delicate balance a good leader strikes between delegation and ownership; and, most importantly, from where the term “shitfaced” is derived.

They reveal the results of a survey they conducted after the controversial Venice Biennale College Danza audition call and the ensuing movement: #payyourdancers. The survey was open to ALL professional dancers, past and present. Respondents represented every corner of the dance world: Jazz dancers, tap dancers, commercial, Irish, Hip Hop, classical Indian, classical ballet, contemporary, musical theatre and ballroom. What do they all have in common? Well, 92% had seen something advertised or were approached about unpaid work. When is this OK? When is it exploitative? Mavis Everett with Explore Plano is interviewing Shelby Williams, Plano City Council member for Place 5 about the importance of getting involved in local politics as a business owner. Shelby says that the most important thing for local business owners to do is to get involved with the political process, both at the local city level and at the taxing entity level. Otherwise, government is something that happens to you. He points out that it is important to develop relationships with your local representatives and be informed about what is going on in the city you work in. In Plano, local business owners get no protection from property taxes like homeowners do. The school board takes approximately two-thirds of the property taxes and as property values continue to increase, this impacts businesses negatively. Plano has been fortunate to keep property taxes flat (no increase) for the city and they only account for around 19% of your total property tax bill. The county only takes about nine percent. He says that small businesses need to show up and make their voice heard about how property tax increases are impacting their businesses.Shelby shares that the City of Plano recently repealed the Plano Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan and is working toward the Plano United 2050 Plan. The comprehensive plan shapes the planning and zoning for the city for the next 30 years. He says that the foundation should be determined based on the character of the city as it is developed and redeveloped over time and also being able to roll with the punches of change in technology and the economy. As business owners start thinking about what their business looks like in the next 30 years, they need to weigh in with their perspective for this new plan. Keeping commercial properties updated as an appealing environment for consumers and clients is important. He says that as businesses improve their properties, he would like to see tax abatements for a certain length of time as an incentive, rather than being punished by higher taxes for the property improvement. He said this can be done by making your voice heard at the county level. To get involved at the city level, Shelby says that Plano City Council Meetings are held twice per month on the second and fourth Mondays with the executive session at 5 pm, followed by the preliminary open meeting, and then the regular session at 7pm. You can sign up to speak about a public interest topic or on specific agenda topics. Agendas are released on the City of Plano website, on Wednesday a week before the meeting. You can see City of Plano Council and P&Z meetings online at www.PlanoTV.org. Host Larry Kortkamp talks local business with Plano City Council Place 5 Shelby Williams. The past year has been difficult for many businesses, but the creative are making their customers feel more comfortable to encourage them to buy.The smaller the business, the less fat they have available to survive with. It’s super important to stay on the radar of consumers across the community. Shelby points to the stark contrasts between Dallas and Collin County depending on what their comfort level has been. Larry points to the emphasis now on paying attention to how local government works and how to stay relevant in that arena. For 2 years in a row, the first time in 24 years, Plano City Council kept business property taxes from increasing. The more we can promote a vibrant business climate, the more everyone is served. How do we engage the council more effectively on a grassroots level? Shelby explains that city council is basically the board of directors for the city. The council, and the city by extension, is meant to foster a good climate for residents and businesses in the city. All the headlines are taken up! City councils and school boards typically get no attention unless there is something really big and contentious happening. 70+% of the things that affect you in your day-to-day life are decided on the local level. Make sure you are getting involved each Monday evening to understand what the conversations are, the issues to be resolved, and where the council minds are headed. Shelby discusses some of the issues on the table right now, and walks us through the taxing authorities and what that means to YOU. This week on the Fired Up Sport Podcast in association with Sport England and This Girl Can, Clare McDonnell and Kirsten Webster salute the incredible achievements of Kenyan athletes Brigid Kosgei and Eliud Kipchoge. Eliud made headlines around the world with his never-been-done-before sub two-hour marathon run, then Brigid smashed the sixteen year-old record for the Women's Marathon in Chicago. Hers is a similar story to his; poor background, single parent - she even had to drop out of school because her mum couldn't afford the fees. But when their stories differ significantly, it is because of gender. In the part of Kenya that Brigid is from, she would have been expected to become a full-time homemaker after giving birth to her twins and give up on her athletic ambitions. But this is where her husband Matthew comes in - he deserves massive chops for flipping the gender role norms and looking after the children, so that Brigid could go to a residential camp and train. We’re joined by BBC Africa Sports Journalist Celestine Karoney, who has been talking exclusively to both record-breaking athletes. We also hear from Shelby Williams, who has just been named ‘Leader of the Year’ in the England Athletics Volunteer Awards. She tells Clare and Kirsten how she got a whole community out running, from complete novices to ultra marathon runners - they run, they train, they help one another, but they always end up in the pub! Come with us and #ChangeTheConversation.
