In this episode of the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast, Dr. Niamh Clarke, Principal Psychologist Manager and Programme Presenter, and Dr. Aleisha Clarke, National Programme Manager for Mental Health and Wellbeing, joins host Noreen Turley to introduce the new Balancing Stress programme, which is a free, easy-to-access, evidence-based online course in stress management, developed in partnership with HSE Health and Wellbeing and HSE psychologists. Through the conversation, Niamh and Aleisha explore how stress affects so many of us, how it can build up unnoticed, and why understanding our own patterns of stress is the first step to managing it more effectively. The episode highlights key themes covered across the six sessions, including practical tools for managing worry, anxiety, low mood, improving relationships, and managing stress into the future. It also explains how the programme combines techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, and Compassion-Focused Therapy to offer real, practical support. This feels a little bit repetitive as you have already noted the tools and techniques Niamh and Aleisha discuss how Balancing Stress is designed for busy lives, with six short, flexible sessions that you can complete at your own pace. Whether you are facing everyday pressures or simply want to strengthen your coping skills, this programme offers practical strategies you can start using right away. The conversation also highlights the importance of making psychological supports more accessible, the impact of stress on our wellbeing, and the power of small, consistent changes in building resilience over time. Buchempfehlungen (unbezahlte Werbung): Stierle, C. If being anxious means you are less than, defective, doing it wrong, or that you are at fault for not being able to control or stop your anxiety, you may be struggling to move forward in recovery. If you feel that being an anxious person is proof that you are unworthy or defective, or if you feel that you are bringing it all on yourself because you do not deserve a better life, you may be struggling with self-compassion. This is one of the primary obstacles to improvement when addressing an anxiety disorder. The inability to treat oneself with kindness or access feelings of self worth or self love really gets in the way of learning the lessons that facing our fears bring us. It leaves many in our community feeling stuck - and feeling even less worthy or capable! Dr. Elaine Beaumont is one of the leading voices in the field of Compassion Focused Therapy. We were fortunate to have her stop by and chat with us about the role of compassion self-compassion in the recovery process. I had a profound conversation with Professor Paul Gilbert OBE, and what struck me most was Paul's raw honesty about how rage, not love, made him compassionate - a perspective that challenges everything we typically associate with compassion. We dove deep into why compassion is often misunderstood as weakness when it actually requires immense courage. Paul's insights on the evolution of compassion in scientific research over the past 20 years were fascinating, especially how it's reshaping our understanding of mental health and wellbeing. For anyone struggling with self-criticism or feeling vulnerable, this episode offers practical wisdom on developing a compassionate mind.About Paul GilbertProfessor Paul Gilbert OBE is a ground-breaking clinical psychologist, researcher and author who developed Compassion Focused Therapy. We'll explore how emotions like grief can trigger hoarding behaviour, the role an inner critic plays, and learn all about compassion-focused therapy – including why it's so much easier to offer compassion than to receive it. The timing is perfect, coinciding with National Grief Awareness Week in the UK. Grief and Hoarding Discussion Chia-Ying Chou discusses the non-direct link between grief and hoarding based on clinical experience. Factors such as resistance to grieving and avoiding vulnerability exacerbate hoarding. Grief can trigger hoarding behaviour to maintain a sense of control and avoid confronting loss. Host shares personal experiences of how grief intensified their hoarding behaviour. Grief and Possessions People keep deceased loved ones' belongings as a way to preserve their existence. Chou mentions the ambiguous preservation of loved ones through items. Anxiety and resistance to facing grief make organising or discarding possessions difficult. Complex Emotions in Grief Host reflects on the unexpected emotions in grief, like anger or impatience. Therapeutic Strategies for Grief and Hoarding Chou compares addressing resistance to grief to preparing for a challenging hike. Emphasis on resourcing, preparing mentally, and gathering support. Suggestions for a "baby-step" approach to facing fears and emotions. Inner Critic and Grief Host discusses journey with their inner critic and finding new approaches to handle it. Chou highlights how internal criticism is often related to grief and missed opportunities. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Integration of Western psychotherapy and Buddhist philosophy for addressing psychological challenges. Difficulty in receiving or directing compassion towards oneself. Connections Between Hoarding, Trauma, and Grief Patterns of loss, either tangible or intangible, among those who hoard. Episode ties with National Grief Awareness Week in the UK. Cultivating Compassionate Companions Idea of cultivating an imaginary compassionate companion for emotional support. Emphasis on emotions being a part of persona, not the true self. Emotions and Grief Management Pacing yourself. Chou recommends creating space for emotions to surface naturally. Encouragement to welcome emotions as a creative process in internal space. Examine fears and take small steps to engage with feelings.
Today we have the privilege of speaking with Dr Darcy Harris, a Professor of Than-natology at King's University College at Western University in Canada. She also maintains a private clinical practice specializing in issues related to change, loss, and transition. In addition, she is a faculty member of the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition. Her research focuses on Grief and Loss, Compassion Focused Therapy, Compassion, Palliative Care and Sociology of Death and Dying, to name a few. Dr. Harris shares her journey into studying political grief, which began in 2016 after witnessing the emotional reactions to Donald Trump's election victory. She explains the concept of political grief, which stems from the disruption of one's "assumptive world"—the framework of beliefs and expectations that provide a sense of safety and predictability.

It's common for us to be harder on ourselves than we would ever be on others. Our tone, our words and the kindness we show when someone else makes a mistake can sound very different to our self-talk when we mess up. Learning to be more compassionate towards ourselves and to being more open to receiving compassion from others is at the heart of this week's conversation with Dr Stan Steindl. Dr Steindl shares three different flows of compassion, what can stand in the way of us being open to receiving compassion from others, the components of compassion and how Compassion Focused Therapy helps us to notice our suffering and learn how we can help alleviate suffering in ourselves and others. Self-forgiveness doesn't come easily. For some, the shame and withdrawal that come with holding incredible bitterness and animosity towards oneself can take over for years, and in some instances, a lifetime, if left unaddressed. We hear of Grant's personal history with guilt and come to understand why self-forgiveness is not a simple decision but rather an ongoing process that requires training. Listen and Learn: Grant's journey to self-forgiveness and why he is using his own experiences to help others overcome self-blame and find true acceptance What is the opposite of self-forgiveness? Indicators that self-forgiveness could be called for How self-forgiveness can illuminate the things that are important to you Resources: Get your copy of Grant's book, The Self-Forgiveness Workbook: Mindfulness and Compassion Skills to Overcome Self-Blame and Find True Self-Acceptance Connect with Grant on LinkedIn About Grant Dewar Hi, It has been good to spend time with you, as a son, brother father, partner, I have found throughout my life that we need tools to rid ourselves of unnecessary burdens that life is always ready to heap upon us. As a work health and safety professional, trainer and now author I have learnt that while we are all unique and precious beyond telling we also share a common humanity, which comes to us as this incredibly complex gift of life that is always giving but sometimes not in a way we understand. From this experience of assisting thousands of people to navigate the complexities of their working and private lives, I have found consistently that the skills of self-forgiveness assist us face all manner of challenges, both defeats and victories, mistakes and successes, setbacks and even smooth running. Every turn we take every choice we make , brings us new challenges, new decisions and new risks. Our ability to face those experiences with clarity and our full capabilities is enhanced when we are able to do the work of self-forgiveness to deal with the unexpected consequences of following our life's calling. I have had many twists and turns in my life pathway and have faced my own mortality and the loss of loved ones. My career has been dotted with both success and failures. In each of these challenges I have been able to apply the sorts of skills that I have researched to my own pathway. I have then been able to help teach others the skills I have discovered through my studies in Work Health and Safety, a Masters Degree focused on Adult Education, and a Doctorate in researching the science of self-forgiveness as a tool for lifelong learning. Self-compassion is the willingness to respond to your pain and suffering in the same way a good friend of yours might–with warmth, patience, and understanding. That sounds easy, right? But you know it isn't.For many, self-criticism is a classic playing-it-safe move. Shelby is a licensed social worker in the state of Michigan who specializes in complex trauma. Shelby graduated with her master of social work degree in 2020 from Grand Valley State University and has since worked as a children's homebased therapist in community mental health, and as an outpatient therapist in private practice with adults. She has experience working with children, families, perinatal mothers, and adults. Just like Kina, her favorite clients to work with are young adults who have struggled to gain deeper healing in therapy. As a trauma therapist, Shelby uses a variety of modalities and interventions, including Internal Family Systems/parts work, Polyvagal Theory, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, and Somatic Experiencing to attempt deeper healing and meaning. IFS is one of her favorite modalities because she has seen so many clients resonate with it (including herself), and has also seen such powerful shifts in how clients relate to themselves, the people in their lives, and to the world. IFS is an approach to complex trauma treatment, as well as various other treatments, that aims to integrate all "parts" or personalities of a person into a more functional and accepting whole system that is led by the self. The goal is to heal "wounded" parts and restore mental balance. She has found this modality especially effective for clients who tend to have dissociative symptoms and/or attachment/relational trauma. Shelby is currently based in Muskegon Michigan; for more information on her or how to work with her, you can find her information on Tiktok (@Shelby_thetherapist)."

Hey folks, In this one we discuss what CFT is, it's theoretical model, techniques, applications and more.
Dr. Stan Steindl is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice at Psychology Consultants Pty Ltd and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Psychology, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. He is also co-director of the UQ Compassionate Mind Research Group. Stan's research interests are in the areas of motivation, behaviour change, compassion and compassion-based interventions, and especially the role of cultivating compassion and self-compassion in the context of trauma, shame, self-criticism and clinical disorders, as well as promoting psychological well-being. In this episode, Stan and Shane discuss how Compassion-Focused Therapy conceptualizes and works with anxiety and depression. The discussion begins with an overview of the central theory and tenets of CFT and then progresses to a conversation about the three emotional regulation systems. If there is an imbalance between these three emotional regulation systems, mental distress and suffering can arise. People who are highly self-critical and self-shaming may not have had enough stimulation of the soothing system or too much activation of the threat system. This imbalance may lead people to find it difficult to feel and express kindness towards themselves. They may be highly sensitive to criticism or rejection, whether real or perceived and internalize that disapproval. The goal of CFT is to correct this imbalance in the emotion regulation systems. How does it really work for you when you spend hours and hours criticizing yourself? How does it really work when you try to motivate yourself by being harder and harder with yourself? But what if instead of spending hours and hours of criticizing, negatively judging, and putting yourself down, you learn skills to treat yourself with kindness, gentleness, and care as you would treat others? In this episode, I interview Dr. Dennis Tirch, Ph.D. Dr. Dennis Tirch founded the Center for Compassion-Focused Therapy in the USA. Why do we often default to shame? Tony Overbay, LMFT, often says that in working with individuals trying to overcome addiction or trying to be the very best version of themselves, exactly 0 out of a few thousand people he has worked with have used shame as a tool for recovery. Yet when we stop and let our thoughts take over, they often go back to the "what's wrong with me, I'm a bad person" story. Today Tony identifies the root causes of shame, why it doesn't help, and what to do when you find yourself heading down that path of toxic shame. Tony also shares the metaphor of the unwelcome neighbor, and he references Compassion Focused Therapy https://welldoing.org/types/compassion-focused-therapy http://tonyoverbay.com/workshop to sign up for Tony's “Magnetize Your Marriage” virtual workshop.
