FIFTY EPISODES?! I am filled today with so much happiness and gratitude that I have been able to now publish fifty episodes of conversations that are so dear to my heart. I have met the most amazing people, and I have so much hope for the direction of the ballet world. It is therefore with great pride, gratitude, and excitement to present to you… The one and only Biscuit Ballerina. Shelby Williams is a soloist with the Royal Ballet of Flanders & the creator of Biscuit Ballerina, a satirical ballet account that addresses unhealthy perfectionism & advocates for mental health awareness. Biscuit Ballerina has been featured in the New York Times, Pointe Magazine, Dance Europe, & Dance Spirit, and Dance Europe Magazine nominated her for best performance by a female dancer. It was SUCH an honor to get some one-on-one facetime with the ballerina we all know, love, and can totally relate to. Her satirical IG and website not only crack us up, but help us through those tough times of perfectionism and allow us space to laugh at ourselves. If laughter is the best medicine, she has earned that MD! Dance Education Canada is proud of our teacher development in that it includes an understanding of how children learn and grow, and how to help them realize the fullest extent of their talents. Often in these excellence driven environments, the traditional approaches to teaching and learning, that still exist today, can include approaches to teaching dance that induce fear through intimidation and can be spirit breaking. Can excellence be achieved in a positive supporting encouraging environment? We at DEC know that yes, it can, and so does our guest. Today we will speak with dance teacher and author Gavin Larsin as she provides us with some tips, tricks, tools and strategies to help dance educators realize that there are alternate paths to excellence that foster healthy child development. GUEST: Born and raised in New York City, Ms. Larsen received her professional dance training at the School of American Ballet, the Pacific Northwest Ballet School and the New York School of Ballet. She has danced professionally with numerous notable companies including the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Alberta Ballet, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet as a soloist and the Oregon Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer. She retired from performing in 2010 to focus on teaching, coaching and writing about dance. Her writing has appeared in several notable publications and has been a contributing writer for Pointe, Dance Teacher and Dance Spirit magazine.. In 2015 she was honored with a fellowship to the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation to pursue her work as a writer. Her memoir, Being a Ballerina: The Power and Perfection of a Dancing Life, was published by the University Press of Florida in 2021. These publications, among a few others under the Dance Media umbrella, helped shape my youth and allowed me to believe in the possibility of becoming a professional dancer at some point in life. I reached out to Jennifer in hopes of having a conversation that may inspire younger generations wanting a professional career in the dance industry. I also wanted to talk to her about being a dancer that chose a professional career combining a love for dance as well as journalism. I love Jennifer’s story about how she ended up where she is today, and I think she’s truly doing her part to have and print the hard conversations needed in the dance industry and beyond right now. In a year that has been detrimental to performers across the board, Jennifer’s doing her part to not only open the floor for discussions but to also support artists along the way. SAAND consistently demonstrates control over the pace of his music and this skill will allow any melancholic shade of house music to flourish with enthusiasm. SAAND’s ability has amassed a punchy resume of performances that cover some lustrous festivals including Lightning in a Bottle, Woogie Weekend, and Mexico’s BPM among others. His releases are found riddled across affluent labels that are also pushing the envelope in their own way. Favorites including Dilate, Motek, Union Jack, and Sol Selectas can all be found highlighting SAAND’s work. In addition to having some of the world's biggest DJ's play and feature his music, SAAND has worked with cutting edge artists such as Till Von Sein, Tigerskin, Pezzner, KMLN, Dance Spirit, Powel, Balcazar & Sordo, HearthuG, Jonny Cruz, Andre Salmon, David Scuba, Raw District, Namito, Kosmas, Derek Marin, Ashley Wild, and Clayton Steele just to name a few. Named Beatport's 'Breakthrough Artist of 2015' SAAND is ready to express himself further through his music.Outside of SAAND’s musical prowess, his contribution to the southern California based music publication Music is 4 Lovers shouldn’t be short changed. As the Director and Senior Editor, Michael regularly exhibits years of music knowledge to the outlet which has helped advance its reach far beyond its California walls. Music Is 4 Lovers has distinguished itself as a prominent independent music publication and Michael’s influence is clear. Frankly, this is a great example of what makes an artist and a taste maker. This mix was recorded at CASTxOFF 04, Los Angeles, CA 2020. Follow SAAND:Instagram: www.instagram.com/saandmusicFacebook: www.facebook.com/saandmusicSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/saandmusicFollow CASTxOFF:Instagram: www.instagram.com/castxoff.laFacebook: www.facebook.com/castxoff.laSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/castxoff_laPrepare for departure ⚓️

On this week’s episode (recorded May 5th, 2020), we’re pleased to welcome Kathleen McGuire Gaines—former dancer, and since 2014 a contributing writer to Dance Magazine. Over the last 10 years, Kathleen has written more than 100 articles on dance for Dance Magazine, Pointe, Dance Spirit, and Dance Teacher magazines, including Why are we still so bad at addressing dancers' mental health, which went viral in 2017. Kathleen is the founder of Minding the Gap, whose mission it is to disrupt dancer culture to value the importance of mental health through advocacy, research, and eventually, resources and solutions. Her ambition is to enact a movement which results in mental health being regarded with the same seriousness as physical health in dance culture. Join us for this latest in an ongoing series on dancer mental health and hear Margaret and Kathleen discuss, among other topics: the results of a survey on dancer's top mental health concerns (eating disorders aren't even in the top three!)   why it's in the dance world's best interest to change its culture around mental health for the better, including some interesting statistics about just who it is that makes up the majority of dance audiences ways that dance companies and management can better serve their artists' mental health needs without breaking their budgets --- For more information, as well as any links, see the blog post for this episode: https://www.margaretmullin.com/episodes/episode-20-mcguire-gaines Follow Kathleen McGuire Gaines and Minding the Gap: https://www.instagram.com/we.are.minding Follow Beyond The Barre: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthebarrepodcast/ Host: Margaret Mullin http://www.margaretmullin.com/ https://www.instagram.com/margaretmullin/ Producer: Sarena Fishman Jimenez http://www.sarenafishman.com/ http://instagram.com/sarenafishman Music: William Lin-Yee https://soundcloud.com/williamlinyee

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Margaret Fuhrer, Editor in Chief of Dance Spirit magazine. Margaret holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s degree in journalism from New York University. Margaret went on to be a dance writer and editor for various publications, including The Huffington Post. She is now the Editor in Chief of Dance Spirit magazine, Content Director for The Dance Edit podcast, and Digital Content Director for Dance Media Publications. She is also the author of American Dance: The Complete Illustrated History. Being in the dance journalism world, Margaret is on the front lines of the latest changes in both the dance world and in media. Since becoming Editor in Chief only a few years ago, she’s seen drastic changes to the journalism and performing arts landscapes. On the podcast, Margaret shares her story and gives “a day in the life” at one of dance’s most prestigious magazines, all while projecting what she believes the future may hold for the world of dance.   Moving Quotes: “The arrival of social media has fundamentally changed the landscape in how dancers market themselves. The way they’re hired. The way their careers go and how those careers look." “It’s funny. You don’t think of dance as a medium that lends itself well to podcasts, which is essentially radio. And yet, hearing dancers and members of the dance world talk about their craft is endlessly fascinating. There is so much to probe there." “Dancers today are so much better educated at a much younger age about the breadth of content that various parts of the dance world are putting out. And I think the trend that we’re starting to see is a lot more cross-pollination than there used to be across genres and styles. Which, I think, is resulting in beautiful things." “A field that sorely needs good people who really know dance is arts administration."   Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:40: Margaret discusses how she went from watching The Nutcracker to dancing ballet to studying medieval studies at an Ivy League university to Editor in Chief of Dance Spirit. 10:24: Margaret, who studied at some of the best universities in the world, explains why she chose to attend those schools. 11:56: Fuhrer describes Dance Spirit and explains her role as Editor in Chief of the publication. 16:22: Margaret describes her team’s process in choosing the right stories to fill Dance Spirit’s pages. 18:45: Fuhrer explains how dance journalism has completely shifted with the advent of new media platforms (such as social media), even since she began her career not too long ago. 23:00: Fuhrer discusses what she believes is the future of dance and why she is very optimistic about the trends that we are seeing today. 24:58: Margaret explains how the opportunity to write her book came to be and how her timeline to create the book was paper-thin, on top of her normal day job. 29:46: Margaret shares about her podcast — The Dance Edit Podcast — and the idea that drove its creation. 32:11: Fuhrer, who is involved in the dance industry as a non-dancer, discusses some other critical non-dance roles that listeners may be interested in pursuing. 34:07: Margaret looks to the future and shares what she’s most excited about.   Bullet List of Resources –  Margaret Fuhrer LinkedIn   The Dance Edit Podcast Company Website + Links to Stream   American Dance: The Complete Illustrated History   On Amazon
