On today's episode, we discuss the troubling news that the Metropolitan Police are investigating death threats sent to Black activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu and trans broadcaster India Willoughby. The letters contained shocking language and violent threats, and the police are calling on the UK to wake up to the racism that still exists in our society. We also delve into the controversy surrounding this year's BAFTA awards, which have been criticised for their lack of diversity. Despite a diverse range of nominees, all 49 winners were white, leading to calls for black people to withdraw from the awards altogether. In other news, we discuss the ongoing legal battle of Shamima Begum, the schoolgirl who left the UK to support ISIS and had her citizenship stripped in 2019. Begum has lost her appeal against the government's decision to remove her British citizenship, leaving her stranded in a Syrian refugee camp. Finally, we turn our attention to the debate surrounding the feminisation of Black men, sparked by Jonathan Majors' recent cover on Ebony magazine, and Rihanna and ASAP Rocky's recent Vogue cover. Red Pill guys have been analysing the images and accusing them of emasculating men, but is this just another example of toxic masculinity?
While Tommy's away, Molly becomes the maid…. Why did Tommy Fury's interview cause such outrage? Should women in relationships with athletes understand that they will always come second or should the athlete be willing to make adjustments? Would you rather be lied to or told the truth? If a man lies to you is he protecting you or his own interests? Sadly this week the UK's far right showed their asses again as evidenced by the death threat sent to Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu and the letter sent to a mosque following the earthquake in Turkey. Are we shocked? No, but we can't stay silent! Helen Lewis was raised a Catholic, but is now an atheist - and has also spent the last ten years writing about feminism. Recently, she was asked if she thought feminism had replaced religion in her life. It's a timely question, since the British Social Attitudes Survey says that the decline of religious belief is “one of the most important trends in post-war history”. But have we really become less religious? Or has our hunger for truth and meaning simply transferred itself to social justice politics? In this programme, Helen Lewis considers the religious overtones of the “culture wars”. On both left and right, she finds unquestionable doctrines, charismatic preachers, blasphemy and heresy - and the promise of salvation. Talking to religious leaders, atheists, and voices from across the social and political spectrum, Helen considers the parallels - both good and bad - between traditional religion and modern social justice movements. Helen is also on the hunt for some answers. Can we take the religious fervour out of politics? Or — and this is hard for an atheist like Helen to accept — should we encourage a revival of traditional faiths to fulfil our spiritual impulses? A Five in the Eye Special We're focusing the whole of this show on the challenging issues of racism and white privilege with the author of a new book called This Is Why I Resist. She's a lawyer, writer and public speaker who has built an increasing profile for herself recently. - Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu.
This book is the hard conversation we must have. In 2020 we have seen clearer than ever that Black people are still fighting for the right to be judged by the content of their character and not the colour of their skin. In the words of the author, "there is no freedom without rights and no rights without the freedom to exercise those rights." This book demands change, because Black people are done waiting. In This Is Why I Resist activist and political commentator, Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu digs down into the deep roots of racism and anti-blackness in the UK and the US. Using real life examples from the modern day, Dr Shola shows us the different forms racism takes in our day-to-day lives and asks us to raise our voice to end the oppression. She delves into subjects not often explored such as racial gatekeepers, white ingratitude, performative allyship (those black squares on Instagram), current identity politics and abuse of the Black trans community. Where other books take White people by the hand to help them negotiate issues of race, This Is Why I Resist offers no sugar-coated comfort, instead it challenges and asks WHEN will White people progress on race inclusion. Black Lives Matter and change is now. It's time for a conscious revolution.
Julia speaks to Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, lawyer, activist, and all-round force to be reckoned with. They discuss how Shola managed to complete so many degrees while raising her children, why your first role model should be yourself, and reconciling faith with feminism. Shola also talks about how injustice spurs on her campaigning, and the importance of making the most of every opportunity you're given – even if you think you've been given it because of your gender or race: “It doesn't matter why you've been asked … Use what you've been given to open up the floodgates … so that more women like you come through. That's what we do – disrupt the status quo.”If you enjoyed this episode or any others, please rate and review us on your preferred podcast provider. It's thought around 34 percent of people with covid-19 in the UK come from a Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority background. Those communities make up 14 percent of the population in England and Wales. The government has tasked NHS England with looking at the issue, but now Labour is launching a rival review, headed by Baroness Doreen Lawrence. In this episode of The Leader podcast, we speak to infectious disease physician Manish Pareek to discuss the complexities of investigating this issue - including the fact that until recently the ethnic backgrounds of covid-19 victims have not been recorded. We also meet lawyer and activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu to ask whether we really need two investigations.Olivia Colman helps feed the hungry in LondonActor Olivia Colman has been helping prepare meals for the needy with the Felix Foundation. The charity is a partner with the Evening Standard's Food for London Now campaign, which today announced donations have passed £3 million. Evening Standard investigations editor David Cohen joins The Leader podcast to explain why coronavirus is exacerbating the issue of food poverty in London, and how the generosity of Evening Standard readers is making a difference.
