Felipe Camargo is one of the top climbers in our sport with sends up to 9b and V15. That's impressive… But what's more impressive is that he began climbing Brazil where there was no professional climbers, no routes past 8b+, and no modern training facilities.Felipe managed to send the iconic 50m 9a+ Papichulo by mainly training on a 3x3m spray wall at 85+ degrees! And even more incredible, is that he didn't have other climbers of his caliber there to push him. He was the trail blazer. His story of going from unknown Brazilian kid to the first professional climber in South America is amazing and sounds almost like a fairy tale. But his hard work and passion is the real secret behind some of his “lucky” breaks.Over his career Felipe has gone on to establish Brazil's first 8c, 8c+, 9a, and 9a+! You can see some of these in his latest film, a breakout hit, Tropical Lines. He also won the Netflix series Ultimate Beastmaster. He has taken his earnings and time and poured in back in the Brazilian community to help the next generation of climbers. To give them opportunities that he didn't have. This week I'm talking with writer, producer and composer Brian Steckler in CA. Brian has made a successful career for himself producing albums, composing for sync and library production music with NBC, CBS, Netflix and more. Brian has won a Clio award for helping create the audio and star in one of the most famous Super Bowl ads of all time as a certain frog who liked to say “er!” We are discussing working for a jingle company and creating world famous ads, writing production library music used on countless shows, finding your niche to work in a field of music that only you can provide and how you need to decide what success looks like for you. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we discuss: *Working for Hummingbird Productions in Nashville. *What a jingle company does. *Creating the voices of the Budweiser Frogs commercial soundtrack. *The difference in studio budgets from the 1980s and today. *Working in sync music. *Writing library production music. *Writing to briefs on a deadline. *Writing for a children's preschool curriculum program. *Making the right connections. *Having a breadth of knowledge to do many things. *Writing custom cues for Netflix. *Putting favorite sounds into a template for speed. *Align yourself with people who are good at things you aren't. *It's a long term numbers game. *Send it, forget it. *Tear tracks apart to learn how to create them. *Making your first instinct sound good. *https://www.briansteckler.com/ *@briansteckler on IG. BIO: I have made a career of creating music in a wide variety of forms and genres. The scope of my experience includes collaborations with directors, editors, and ad agencies for commercial musical purposes as well as working with individual artists, and bands to create and hone unique musical styles. This range of experience has given me a broad musical basis to draw from. I enjoy learning what people want and need musically, and then bringing even more than they expect to both the process and the result. After receiving my BFA (piano performance) from Western Michigan University in 1993, I moved to Nashville and began my career at Hummingbird Productions, one of the leading jingle houses on Music Row at the time. It was there I co-produced the audio and lent my voice to one of the most recognized, Clio-winning Super Bowl commercials of all time: Budweiser “Frogs.” I wrote and produced national, regional, and local spots during my years at Hummingbird and it was there that I learned how to deliver great sounding audio on very tight deadlines. I moved to Los Angeles in 1997 in order to pursue songwriting and production and began working with artists and bands crafting songs, producing tracks, and mixing my own work, as well as other producer's songs. I wrote songs for Sony ATV Music Publishing, including co-writing with Billy Porter, Gary Barlow (Take That), Paul Stanley (KISS), 2Gether (an MTV boy band spoof series), and many others. With artist Angela Via, I co-wrote and produced a song that landed in Pokemon: The Movie and on the multi-platinum selling soundtrack album. It was also during this time I had my first taste of film scoring, working closely with Keith Forsey (Billy Idol's long-time record producer) to create the score for Wisegirls, a film starring Mira Sorvino and Mariah Carey. As the record industry underwent significant changes during the Napster era, my wife and I chose to move our young family to Northern California. While maintaining my relationships in LA, I was able to work with independent artists and bands, as well as grow my skills and experience scoring, working for Universal Pictures on trailers and promos, as well as regularly placing cues in TV shows. Recently, I've written the score for the Netflix series The Day I Met El Chapo, provided the bulk of the music, including the Main Title theme for a number of other series: Hunted (CBS), S.T.R.O.N.G. (NBC), Ultimate Beastmaster, Awake, Cooked with Cannabis (Netflix). I also had the opportunity to score the award winning documentary Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars, as well as Sun, Soil & Water, which is currently being screened at a number of film festivals. My wife and I live in Granite Bay, CA which is situated between Folsom and Roseville, about 30 minutes from downtown Sacramento, and 90 minutes from Lake Tahoe. Living somewhere beautiful, outside the “rat race,” certainly helps my creative flow. I work in my well sound-proofed custom recording studio called “The Stickhouse,” which is an ideal place for creating and mixing music. My studio is built around the Slate Digital VRS8 system, running Pro Tools Ultimate and Logic Pro, depending on the functionality I need for each project. I have a substantial library of Virtual Instruments and samples which cover any genre, from orchestral to hip-hop.
Things just got WILD because Chris Distefano aka CHRISSY CHAOS is back in the studio for the first time in 3 years! Chris tells us that after getting his favorite band's attention on Joe Rogan, he met Matty Healy from The 1975. We discuss dark pirate history and contemplate how we'd survive the last movie we watched. Plus, Brendan has a brand new sweatshirt (and it's not black). Chris Distefano first burst onto the scene as a standout on MTV's talking heads franchise Guy Code/Girl Code, with PopSugar naming him the “funniest guy on MTV.” He went on to star in the IFC series Benders and serve as co-host of Netflix's Ultimate Beastmaster. He also co-starred in the web series Bay Ridge Boys alongside fellow comic Yannis Pappas. Also with Pappas, Chris co-hosted the popular weekly history podcast HISTORY HYENAS. Currently, Chris is co-hosting the “HEY BABE!” podcast with Sal Vulcano on YouTube. Also, Chris has his own podcast “CHRISSY CHAOS” on Patreon and YouTube. Chris has appeared on TruTV's Comedy Knockout and MSG Network's People Talking Sports, and has performed stand-up on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers, CBS' Late Show with David Letterman, and AXS TV's Gotham Comedy Live. He can be seen performing almost every weekend at clubs and theaters across the country, and he can be heard as a regular guest on many of Sirius XM Radio's most popular shows, including The Bonfire, Jim Norton and Sam Roberts, and Sway in the Morning. Tarzan Kay is a launch strategist and copywriter who teaches women (and a few good men) how to sell bigger, so they can serve bigger. Tarzan is a master of email marketing and former copywriter-for-hire who specializes in fun-to-read, more-addictive-than-Game-of-Thrones email copy. She also helps freelancers attract better clients who’ll reach deeper into their pockets to pay for top-quality services — also using the power of email, duh! In a previous life, Tarzan was a music major and – like so many copywriters – did a 3-year stint in law school, en français! She found her way to the online space through blogging and social media (“Whassup, overdue credit card bills and low-paying clients!”). When Tarzan’s not in “Mob boss mode,” she likes to take mid-day dunks in the pool (even at frigid temperatures), stage backyard episodes of Ultimate Beastmaster, and sing show tunes in the shower. Tarzan lives in Niagara with her partner and two kiddos. Listen to this episode to learn… Tarzan’s journey from freelance copywriting gigs to launching her own services and courses on email marketing How writing for email marketing is different from writing for social media Why hiring a VA during her first year of business is still the best investment Tarzan has made If you’re a writer-entrepreneur, ready to grow your biz to multiple-6 figures while also getting your personal writing done, AND making an impact -- I created Craft + Cashflow for you. Rafinha (or Rafi) Bastos is an international comedic icon. The New York Times named Rafi "The Most Influential Person on Twitter" in 2011. He even beat the Dalai Lama (suck it, Lama!). He's a pioneer of standup in his country and Joe Rogan called Rafi the Lenny Bruce of Brazil on the Joe Rogan Experience. Rafi is now doing standup in the US. He's shared the stage with greats like Dave Chapelle, Sarah Silverman, and is now a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York City. Rafi joins Stephen to talk about: -How going to school for journalism helped Rafi observe funny moments, write succinctly, and become a great joke writer. -How Rafi became a pioneer of standup comedy and became one of the most popular comedians in Brazil. -The crazy locations that Rafi and his pals started to do standup (like BDSM clubs). -Rafi’s challenge of cultivating a following here in America while also entertaining his massive following in Brazil. -How Rafi made an impression on Netflix’s Ultimate Beastmaster and how his “booth jumping” changed the show in its 2nd season. -Some of the key relationships that he formed that have helped him in his career in America, including Jade Catta-Preta and Kevin Nealon. -And more!! Then Rafi & Stephen jump into some self-help, including dealing with kids that are a-holes for 17 minutes in the morning, giving gifts to strangers, and so much more. OMGoodness!!! This was my longest interview to date because I just couldn’t get enough of Tarzan! Our story began in 2016 when we both signed up for B-School. Tarzan messaged me about doing weekly meetups which turned in to a three year friendship and counting! From small copywriting business, to sought after expert, Tarzan’s stardust story is incredible! In this episode Tarzan shares: How she became Tarzan (and who she was before) That she wrote a book!? I didn’t even know that! How she made friends with Amy Porterfield and Marie Forleo The most important thing she tells ALL her clients How she used to be a lounge singer Her new passion for breath work And so many other incredible tidbits. This episode is crazy good. A must listen! Please share how much you loved this episode with us by tagging us at https://www.instagram.com/tamaraarnoldauthor and https://www.instagram.com/tarzan_kay More about Tarzan: Tarzan is a conversion copywriter who specializes in fun-to-read, more-addictive-than-Game-of-Thrones launch copy. She also helps freelancers and service providers package up their magic and turn it into products that sell. In a previous life, Tarzan was a music major and – like so many copywriters – did a 3-year stint in law school, en français! She found her way to the online space through blogging and social media (“Whassup, overdue credit card bills and low-paying clients!”). Today, Tarzan calls herself the Empress of Email, and teaches other freelancers how to price their services, close higher ticket packages and attract the best clients using her signature method: Celebrity Marketing. When T-Money’s not in “Mob boss mode,” she likes to take mid-day dunks in the pool (even at frigid temperatures), stage backyard episodes of Ultimate Beastmaster, and sing show tunes in the shower. Tarzan currently lives in Niagara with her partner, 2 kids and the feisty furball, Cosmo.

On the December 28, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson, weekend editor Brad Oman and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about what they did over the Holidays and share their favorite Christmas gifts. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Feedback: Hayden writes in that “Yes Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If you break the plot down, it's the typical Christmas story. A distant father who has to go on an adventure to rekindle his relationship with his family. Think about all the Christmas movies that have this exact plot device. Also it's important that it's on Christmas Eve because police activity would be down. If It's A Wonderful Life counts, which it should, then Die Hard should. A very massive chunk of the film doesn't even take place on Christmas.“ Leanne R. from LA writes in that “Rankin-Bass Christmas specials would have been a good addition to your lists, especially when you consider A Charlie Brown Christmas and Mickey's Christmas Carol were mentioned in the episode (both technically films, but are popularized as tv specials). And I wasn't sure if I missed this or not, but The Santa Clause is a quintessential Christmas movie for me. I also wanted to give a shout out to Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle & You've Got Mail as well, which are not technically Christmas films but strike the proper feel-good Christmas tone to pass. You've Got Mail, especially, feels more Christmas-y (based on The Shop Around the Corner, it feels more deserved of a Christmas film title) and for a rom-com fan like me is also a yearly Christmas film staple. Otherwise, very much enjoyed your lists! Thanks for the update and keep up the good work.” Have any geeky thoughts on this news that we might not have addressed on the podcast? Send your opinions, speculation, analysis and suggestions to peter@slashfilm.com. What we've been doing over the Holidays: Jacob finished Ultimate Beastmaster and American Vandal, finally got around to The Shape of Water, played more Wolfenstein 2, played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 and Pitchcard. Peter binge-watched two whole seasons of Survivor, watched the Star Wars episode of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix, and played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 board game. HT watched Ultimate Beastmaster, A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Inheritance, gave in and listened to the Hamilton soundtrack even though she was trying to save it until she saw the show. Chris saw THE LAST JEDI again on Christmas Day (it's still good). I've also been reading and making an effort to not look at my phone, which is just bliss. Ben watched The Last Jedi (again), It's a Wonderful Life, Logan Lucky, Mudbound, A Ghost Story, and The Good Place Brad saw The Disaster Artist and Molly's Game, is continuing to catch up on awards season movies like The Post, The Florida Project, and I, Tonya, and is finally spending time playing Star Wars Battlefront 2. Favorite gifts we got for Christmas: Peter got a Hot Toys life-size Baby Groot replica and Google Wifi router HT got KOREAN SKIN CARE, also the Costco MoviePass/Fandor year-long subscription Chris iphone X Ben got a bunch of board games Jacob got lots of new PC stuff Brad got the Ectomobile Owner's Manual Book and his life back. Hey Gang!! Timmy V. here with the latest episode of Sprinklez! Today's episode is near and dear to my heart as it's my Summer Guilty Pleasures show! Summer is my favorite time of year! It's a time for relaxing, eating ice cream treats and watching lighter shows on tv. My first pick is the addictive obstacle competition called "ULTIMATE BEASTMASTER" which is a Netflix original series with contestants from six different countries compete for the title of, you guessed it: Ultimate Beastmaster! Then I simply adore Fox's the long running dance competition show "SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?" Which is chock full of incredible dancers, choreography and music to lift anyone's spirits. I try to convince you that PROJECT RUNWAY ALL STARS is worthy of your summer tv show lists. It may be seen by many of you aa the red-headed step child of it's more popular older sister, Project Runway but it is just as entertaining and full of magnificent creativity and the typical drama you have come to expect with scissor wielding fashion designers! Lastly, I reveal my latest Tasty-Treat-Sensation find: Pretzel Ice Cream cones!!!!!! Sadly I have only found it at a local Ice Cream shop here in Kentucky called Louisville Cream. They are unbelievably delectable!!!! (Hopefully you will find something similar in your locale)

On this week's episode, Alex and Brandon chat about how deep Brandon's voice can possibly go.Brandon was super sick this week, but he insisted on recording anyway. With that in mind, please excuse the lower sound quality than normal. After telling about their adventures at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the boys jump into Alex's pick for the ABC's of Geekdom segment, this week focusing on a very sour individual. After that, Alex rattles off she me corrections from last week's show, including Funko, God of War, the PS Vita, Injustice, Transformers, Carly Rae Jepson's acting career, Baby Driver, the first Wonder Woman movie, the Matrix franchise, Prometheus, The Fly, Moonlight, Ultimate Beastmaster, Stranger Things, John Wick, the Deuteragonist, and Predator. After the break, the boys discuss some trailers, including more Injustice 2, Death Note, Captain Underpants, and Despicable Me 3. Then they cover some news from the past week, including a movie based on the song "All I want for Christmas," the future of Star Wars movies, the future of Power Rangers movies, a new movie set in the Spider-Man universe, the rumored choice for Cable in Deadpool 2, and a reboot of Doctor Doolittle starring Robert Downey, Jr. After that, Alex gives some more hot takes on stuff he's been watching, including Witchblade, Fear the Walking Dead, Veep, My Neighbor Totoro, and Evil Dead. Then the boys do a new top 5 list that gets them extremely animated. Of course, no show would be complete without an all-new Fan Fic Fights, this time pitting two muscle bound super villains against each other. Finally, Brandon has chosen the next movie for collective watching and discussing and landed on the cult classic Alien vs. Predator. We'll be talking about it in two weeks, so make sure to watch it, tell us what you thought, and tune in for what is sure to be an incredibly nerdy chat about the flick.Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @AtariAlex, and @Megsikouicorean. With all of that covered, they get into their feature topic, a review of John Wick (spoilers from around 1:56:51-2:12:36) and talk about how awesome it is. Entrepreneurial. Missional. Athletical? All things that describe Jonathan Collins. But was he wearing too many hats? Tech start-ups, being on the cusp of the olympic team as a decathlete, being Zest's Most Adventurous Man. It's all good, until it isn't. Jonathan takes us on a journey through the highs & lows of life. And perhaps finding something that transcends the ups and downs. Also, Jeff went to church without knowing where his 11 year old son was. On purpose.
