From the outside, Chrissy Metz seemed to have it all starring in a hit show, inspiring millions, and radiating confidence but behind the spotlight was a woman navigating the painful realities of childhood trauma, body image struggles, people-pleasing, and the long road to emotional healing. In this heartfelt conversation, Chrissy opens up about the survival patterns she developed as a young girl trying to be “good” enough to be loved and how those patterns followed her into adulthood. She shares her experience growing up in a fractured home, enduring emotional pain in silence, and turning to food as both comfort and protection. Through therapy, spiritual grounding, and creative expression, Chrissy began the deep work of untangling her worth from performance. We explore the cost of being the peacemaker, the fear of being truly seen, and the challenge of letting go of perfection. Chrissy reflects on her journey into acting, the power of being chosen for a role that mirrored her own struggles, and how her latest children's book is helping the next generation talk about emotions that many of us were taught to suppress. This is an honest, soul-stirring episode about the courage it takes to stop performing and start healing from the inside out.__________________Follow/Watch/Listen/Subscribe: Instagram: @rootedrecoverystoriesTiktok: @patrickcusterprojectYouTube: @rootedrecoverystoriesFacebook: @rootedrecoverystoriesWebsite: www.rootedrecoverystories.com__________________Cast:Patrick Custer - HostInstagram: @thepatrickcusterTiktok: @thepatrickcusterYouTube: @thepatrickcusterFacebook: @thepatrickcusterWebsite: https://linktr.ee/patrickcusterChrissy Metz - GuestInsta: @chrissymetzFacebook: @chrissymetzofficialYoutube:  @chrissymetzmusic  Tiktok: @chrissymetzX: @chrissymetzWebsite: www.chrissymetzmusic.comSpotify: Chrissy Metz__________________Get Help (addiction, mental health/trauma):Promises Behavioral HealthCall: (888) 648-4098Website: www.promises.comInstagram: @promises_bh__________________About Chrissy Metz: Emmy and two-time Golden Globe nominee Chrissy Metz stars on the award-winning NBC series "This Is Us,” winner of the 2018 and 2019 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and People's Choice Award for "Favorite New TV Drama.” Chrissy recently starred as Joyce Smith in the hit 20th Century Fox faith-based film, BREAKTHROUGH. Hi everyone! It’s another catchup week here at One Movie Punch, especially in the wake of the 92nd Academy Awards yesterday evening. Most of our episodes went into pre-production before the ceremony, so I can’t tell you right now whether today’s film, BREAKTHROUGH, won the award for Best Original Song, after being nominated seemingly out of nowhere. So, in lieu of Matinee Monday, and with BIRDS OF PREY being covered by the lovely folks at the Comics in Motion Podcast during next week’s Takeover Tuesday, I figure this is my opportunity to check this one out for all of you. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Cinema Recall podcast. Every episode, The Vern takes a look at iconic scenes in classic movies. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is BREAKTHROUGH(2019), the religious drama directed by Roxann Dawson and written for the screen by Grant Nieporte, based upon the book by Joyce Smith. The film follows the tragic story of John Smith (Marcel Ruiz), who falls into a frozen lake and is rushed to a hospital, pronounced dead. When his adopted mother Joyce Smith (Chrissy Metz) whispers a prayer over his inert body, his heartbeat suddenly returns, putting the faith of the community to the test. No spoilers. I’ll be honest; I was really hoping someone else would pick up today’s film for review. I don’t have a great track record when it comes to evangelical Christianity, whether that’s dealing with preachers screaming at students and telling them that they’re going to hell, or the gross alliance between the so-called Moral Majority and the Republican Party which re-launched the culture wars, or any number of horrific incidents with the more strident members of that particular sect of Christianity. Opinions are one thing. Actions are another. And quite often the two are in conflict with that particular. Granted, I know some of that criticism is very personal, but some of it is also very public, especially when megachurch owners accumulate massive funds, which go to the actual oppression of the LGBTQ community. The same wealth has been used to fund and distribute a growing library of evangelical Christian pictures, from companies like veteran Pure Flix and up-and-coming Kingdom Studios. There’s definitely money to be made, especially on the backs of the best-selling Left Behind series, which gave evangelical Christians their own post-apocalyptic world to explore, and two attempts at a film franchise, based around an esoteric idea of The Rapture. It’s not just about the money, however, but also the belief that these films are meant to be evangelical efforts, not just telling a good story, but delivering the good news, and to help grow their ranks. And it’s this evangelical component that generally gets in the way of what could otherwise be a decent film. Films with an evangelical bent are trying to convert you, generally by either proving to you the power of God in our everyday lives, or by presenting a community that will accept you should you wish to change your life. The films also adhere to strict Christian principles, staying away from obscene language, sexual themes outside of abstinence, and nearly any competing viewpoints, unless they are to be disproven, as in the GOD’S NOT DEAD franchise. We’re not getting the full realism of our everyday lives, but a sanitized version of reality, which means while the films might be intended as a form of evangelization, they generally only appeal to other evangelical Christians, which can be seen in both the critical and the audience scores. BREAKTHROUGH, as such, did not appeal to me in the least bit. I found the film to be almost consistently ham-handed when talking about God, trying too hard to emphasize how much of a miracle John’s recovery is, or how strong of a faith his mother has, or how important the church is within their community. God is clearly the focus in the film, both thematically and story-wise, as personified in Joyce’s adherence to her faith and examination of her own flaws. Chrissy Metz is easily the best thing about this film, turning in a convincing performance that elevates key scenes from the usual dramatic sequences into tear-jerking experiences. But with God being overtly inserted all the time, each small faith lesson short-circuits the other stories that are attempting to be told. Thematic content aside, the film also suffers from feeling too much like a television show, or a made-for-television movie. Director Roxann Dawson crosses over from her most recent career as a television director for her first feature with BREAKTHROUGH, and her extensive television experience shows in the pacing and framing. Over two hours, we get a lot of great scenes for television, when time generally needs to be filled, but take away from the overall pacing of John’s recovery story. However, there are also some incredible shots that work well for the film, particularly the more artistic underwater shots and the overall composition of the community’s visit to the hospital. Not bad for someone who found their break as B’Elanna Torres on “Star Trek: Voyager”! I also think that Grant Nieporte’s adaptation of the source material has a lot to do with the overbearing themes and pacing issues. Joyce Smith’s account of her son’s drowning and recovery, in book form, can take the time to talk about her son’s life, and his unique circumstances, and his challenges at school and home, along with her own struggles with faith. Adaptations generally need to make choices, and BREAKTHROUGH doesn’t make enough of them. We shouldn’t have to wait roughly forty minutes to get to the major conflict, nor should we try to set up multiple focal points for the film. We should focus either on Joyce’s faith, or John’s recovery, or the community as a whole, and leave loose ends like adoption, haircuts, and sign-up sheets for a limited series or television format. It works, and it will land with the evangelical audience, but it will fail as an evangelical piece, because the same parts that attract their core audience will be turn away their target audience. BREAKTHROUGH is an evangelical drama that tells the story of a young man who miraculously survived drowning. While the film will delight those already evangelized, it will frustrate non-evangelical viewers with its ham-handed approach to God and its lack of thematic focus throughout. Fans of heartwarming dramas, or evangelical pictures, will definitely appreciate this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 61% Metacritic: 46 One Movie Punch: 5.5/10 BREAKTHROUGH (2019) is rated PG and is currently playing on HBO.

Hello friends, wherever you are from desk to dwelling. I am excited to introduce you to my friend, Joyce Smith. Smith is a prevalent last name here in the States, but Joyce is far from ordinary. Once you get to know Joyce, you will understand that her faith is what makes her extraordinary. Joyce’s testimony about her son, John who fell through the ice in a lake in Missouri was made into a movie last year. You may remember the BREAKTHROUGH trailer, which we will include in our show notes starring Krissy Metz and Josh Lucas. John stayed under the water for a long time, was pulled out of the water and was literally dead for over 45 minutes. However when Joyce cried out to God with power and desperation, a miracle occurred. A miracle that stormed Hollywood, and is still playing all over the world still today. John’s story didn’t start in 2015 when he fell in the lake. John’s story started in a small village in Guatemala in 2000. I had the privilege to meet Joyce a couple of months ago, when we hosted a Breakthrough event in our community. Joyce is very generous with her time and testimony. I am thankful that Joyce is here today, to talk about God’s story, through her adoption testimony. Joyce welcome to Resourcefully Speaking! When I walk on stage to give a keynote, I'm often introduced "expected to die, now teaching others to truly live, John O’Leary.” Today, I welcome 19-year-old John Smith who just 5 years ago fell into an icy lake, spent 15 minutes trapped below the ice and did not take a breath for over an hour. He was declared dead; yet he is alive and fully recovered today. His miraculous story was recently featured in the major film Breakthrough and today he shares it with us. If you’re struggling to make sense of your suffering, have lost your personal faith or have stopped believing in miracles, this episode is for you. SHOW NOTES: John was adopted at 5 months old from Mixco, Guatemala. January 19, 2015: John + two friends are playing on a lake when the ice broke. One self-rescued, the other was rescued by emergency personnel. With his life flashing before his eyes, John realized he was going to die. Firefighter Tommy Shine heard a voice, directing him exactly to John's location, pulling him up after being underwater for 15 minutes. The world-renowned doctors spent over an hour doing everything medically + scientifically possible to bring him back to life. John's mother came to pray over his body, the atmosphere + physical temperate in the room the changed. The moment she began to pray, every apparatus on him turned on. Sixteen days later, John left the hospital with no lingering medical issues. With miracles, there are a lot of skeptics but there is science to back up this miracle. DeVon Franklin, the producer of Breakthrough, encouraged John to "stay humble and stay hungry." "God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called." "By the time die, how many people can I influence to take to heaven with me?" - John's pastor Jason Noble inspires him to share his story to inspire others. John's miracle has called him to study becoming a pastor at North Central University this fall. Follow John on Instagram at @JohnASmith25. Breakthrough is now available on DVD and digital download. Female filmmakers are front and center this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to writer/director ROXANNE BENJAMIN and director ROXANN DAWSON. First up is our exclusive pre-recorded interview with director ROXANN DAWSON who makes her feature directorial debut with BREAKTHROUGH. Based on the true story of 14-year old John Smith who, on January 19, 2015, fell through the ice of Lake St. Louis, and was clinically dead for almost an hour. With no CPR for 27 minutes and no pulse for 45 minutes, the emergency medical team delivered the worst possible news to John's mother, Joyce. But as any mother knows, you don't give up on your child. Calling on her immense faith, Joyce prayed for John to "come back to life" and be healed. Miraculously, he started breathing. Adapted for the screen by screenwriter Grant Nieporte from the bestselling book "The Impossible" by Joyce Smith, take a listen as Roxann talks about what compelled her to tell this story and why she chose it as her directorial feature debut, working with producer Devon Franklin ("Miracles from Heaven", "Heaven Is For Real"), the challenges and concerns of making a faith-based film (how about counting the number of times "God" is said or deciding how many crosses to show), working with the natural elements of ice and snow and how it affects the shooting schedule, developing a visual tonal bandwidth and her work with cinematographer Zoran Popovic, underwater filming, perfect casting, scoring, and more! Then writer/director ROXANNE BENJAMIN joins us live talking about her sophomore feature, BODY AT BRIGHTON ROCK. A thriller with a spiritual or supernatural touch to it, Roxanne takes on a journey into the mountains through the eyes of inexperienced older teenage trail guide Wendy who gets lost in the night. . .along with a dead body. Calling on her own life and love of nature and hiking, take a listen as Roxanne talks about developing the story concept and translating that into a workable film construction, location scouting, character development and the importance of isolation to the story, the challenges of shooting in the mountains of Idyllwild and during a bout of severe California wildfires in 2017, working with a live bear versus CGI, sound design, and more. Also notable is our discussion on Roxanne's choices for a strong female-led crew with cinematographer Hannah Getz (who delivers some outstanding work here with night shoots), production designers Courtney Andujar and Hillary Andujar, and editor Courtney Marcilliat. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

After countless tries to start his heart, John died on the operating table, but everything changed when his mom walked in the room. Breakthrough is the true story of a modern day miracle. I am so excited to talk with Devon Franklin who produced the movie. Devon is a film & TV producer, best-selling author, preacher, and spiritual success coach. You may have seen some of his other movies like Miracles from Heaven or Heaven Is for Real. Jason Noble is the real life Pastor of John Smith and is played by Topher Grace in the movie. Jason shares his first hand account of the miracle he witnessed and was a part of. We also talk about the movie, miracles, God, faith, and trials of being a pastor. I also get to ask a few questions about what went on behind the scenes. Show Notes [03:37] Melissa got to see a preview of breakthrough, and it was so beautiful and powerful, and it was such a relief that she didn't have to ask her kids to leave the room. [05:57] One of the things that Devon is curious about is how Breakthrough full affect youth since the main character John Smith is a teenager. [29:15] When God takes a loved one home, we have to trust him with that and be okay with it. [29:51] We have to pray believing that God is going to show up and be okay with the outcome. Roxann got her first job playing Diana Morales in the Broadway production of A Chorus Line. But fans probably know her best for her role as B'Elanna Torres in Star Trek: Voyager. Voyager offered her the first opportunity to direct and she proceeded to direct 10 episodes of the next Star Trek series, Enterprise. Since then, she’s directed The Deuce, House of Cards, The Americans, The Path, Bates Motel, Crossing Jordan, Lost and many others. She will also be directing the upcoming Morning Show, starring Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carrell, and Jennifer Aniston. She makes her feature film directing debut with Breakthrough, starring Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, and Topher Grace, an adaptation of Joyce Smith’s memoir, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection. The movie that Roxann has chosen to discuss is, kind of, the exact inverse of her own upcoming film - 1956's The Bad Seed. Maintaining such a prolific acting and directing career, Roxann has so much insight into the craft of acting. She discusses how actors often think that by making "small" acting decisions they are being more authentic, when in reality these decisions are just "lazy" and "boring." She also expresses her belief that the characters in a film should not be discussing the philosophical ideas of the movie, but rather, the film should inspire discussion from the audience. And of course, she talks all about her role as the half-human, half-Klingon, B'Elanna Torres, and what that role has meant not just to fans, but to her personally. Directed by Roxann Dawson, "Breakthrough" is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s (Chrissy Metz) adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin ("Miracles from Heaven") and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte from Joyce Smith’s own book, "Breakthrough" is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

Help your clients archive their photos, papers, and more Margot Note is a professional archivist with nineteen years experience. A couple of years ago, she realized she could use her talents and skills as an archivist to help individuals and families bring order to their chaotic piles of photos, letters, and other family history mementos. In this episode, she shares professional tips on how you can help your clients archive their own precious mementos, following standards and best practices used by museums, corporations, and organizations. Tune in to hear us discuss: How to create order out of chaos! Margot becomes the family historian—and a new idea is born: taking her archiving skills to the public slow and steady progress begins with a plan Be intentional with where you invest your time, and choose where you'll get the most dividends (look here for Margot's Project Prioritizer) Don't think of the project as one big lump; chunk it out to keep it from being overwhelming How it works: an example of one Margot helping a client get her and her children's mementos out of the Lululemon bags and into acid-free folders and archival boxes Start getting the physical artifacts in order before digitizing anything Margot is digitizing, annotating, and posting the 1940 love letters of her grandparents; the interplay of letters, photos, and research starts with getting things organized On recognizing the value of history and the historical artifacts; you need to reach a certain age before you appreciate family history. Organize what you have and keep it preserved for future generations, even if the teenagers show no interest now! Keeping it organized gives more insurance that it won't end up in the trash On hearing the dreaded: “I know my child isn't going to want this material.” Don't throw it away; give them a change to decide if and what they want to keep (hint: it'll be more than you think!) Be kind to your descendants: provide captions for your photos Use full names on captions, e.g. "Joyce Smith," not "Aunt Joyce" On working with letters and scrapbooks, and the surprising dangers of newsprint Decide on an order of organization (and what that means!) Tips on storing archival materials: Take them out of harm's way; get them out of the attic, shed, garage, and basement storage, or anyplace with fluctuation in temperature and humidity Don't get fixated on the details of individual items, think in terms of groups. What are the big buckets you can sort your material into? Think of high level groupings. Keep the original order (and what that means) don't worry about getting rid of duplicates; it's probably not worth your time. Get things in their group and then start looking at it in a more granular level Best place to store family archives: interior closets, like a bedroom or linen closet If you don't know what kind of supplies you need, start at the Container Store, which has a section with archival boxes and folders and even garment bags for things like old christening gowns. Do not use old plastic containers or old cardboard boxes because of chemicals and off-gassing A great preservation retailer: Gaylord Archival Look for products that are acid-free and lignin-free What is a finding aid? Create a document to itemize what you have in each box; this is your finding aid The finding aid gives an overview of the materials you have and how they're organized Finding aids act as a map of where things are and can be especially helpful when materials are spread among relatives What if my client is overwhelmed? When to bring in a professional archivist People love to save things, but they don't usually think about the order it's put in. That's where an archivist can help Get started with Margot's excellent book, Creating Family Archives: How to preserve your papers and photographs For more information and to find Margot, visit her at margotnote.com, or ask to join her private Facebook group.
