Josh and Drusilla are OBSESSED with The Ugly Stepsister. From wiki: “The Ugly Stepsister (Norwegian: Den Stygge Stesøsteren) is a 2025 Norwegian-speaking satirical[3][4] dark comedy[5] body horror[6][7] film written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt (in her directorial debut). The film, starring Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ane Dahl Torp, and Flo Fagerli, making use of the motif of the fairy tale "Cinderella", retells a twisted story of Elvira, who competes against her beautiful stepsister in a bloody battle for beauty. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 23 January 2025, where it opened the Midnight Section.” Also discussed: Hitchcock's Rope, trauma dumping on friends, movies that feel like plays, classic queer cinema and the Hays Code, Alice Wu's Saving Face, 90s lesbian films, pretty privilege, and more.  NEXT WEEK: Dr. Caligari (1989) Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/https://letterboxd.com/bloodhaus/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/‪@sisterhyde.bsky.social Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialhttps://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

For the fourth time in the history of the podcast, Team Vintage Sand returns to one of its most popular formats, the Hidden Gems episode. As we did previously in episodes 11, 30, and 40, Michael, John and I each choose one film to discuss that we feel has been unjustly neglected and overlooked by the huddled masses yearning to see anything besides a prequel, sequel, spinoff or reboot. So please enjoy Episode 53, which features three films that could not be more different from one another. Michael takes us back to the 70's and to a John Cassavetes film that was ignored and even despised upon its (very limited) initial release but has only gained in reputation and influence across the years. I focus on a very imperfect genre film, Neill Blomkamp's second feature, 2013's "Elysium" that, perhaps even more powerfully and viscerally than acknowledged masterworks like "The Social Network" and "Her", predicted a desperate future that we appear to be headed for much sooner than the filmmaker anticipated. Finally, John shines the spotlight on Alice Wu, a unique filmmaker and storyteller. Her second film, The Half of It, a lovely variation on the "Cyrano de Bergerac" formula, had the misfortune of being premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival…that never took place, because it was 2020. It ended up in the undifferentiated mass of content that is Netflix, from which John will hopefully save it. Enjoy, stay cool in the heat, see great movies, and Thank You for Listening, Citizen!

We're back with a favorite of Amanda's: Alice Wu's coming-of-age movie, The Half of It. It centers on Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), a quiet Chinese-American girl in a small town just trying to get through high school when Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer), the local and ultimate himbo, enlists her to write love letters to Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire), who is so stunning she just happens to be the object of literally everyone's desires in this high school. Tune in as Dr. Terry Dornak (Hello Wonderful Podcast) stops by the show to chat with Arthur about Netflix's The Half of it, the 2020 coming-of-age movie that follows introverted teenager Ellie Chu as she pens love letters on behalf of inarticulate jock Paul Munsky and sends them off to his crush Aster Flores. The catch: Ellie herself has caught feelings for Aster as well. On top of breaking down this queer and contemporary spin on Cyrano de Bergerac, Arthur and Terry address the usage of media like films and podcasts to process life experiences, the conservative attitudes that drive bigotry and ignorance in small-town communities, and the smell of freshly baked flour. Written and directed by Alice Wu (Saving Face), The Half of It stars Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, Alexxis Lemire, Collin Chou, Wolfgang Novogratz, Becky Ann Baker, Catherine Curtin, and Enrique Murciano. Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: A classic Cyrano de Bergerac tale The writer/director based this on a friend relationship she had in college It includes a Powells reference The tone that is set with the lighting Multiple mediums used to tell the story Minor issues with the cell phone use but overall creative incorporation of them Special thanks to our editor Geoff Vrijmoet for this episode and Melissa Villagrana for helping out with our social media posts. I'm tired of the grown-up world! Give me whipsmart, funny teens having adventures, falling in love and exploring how to navigate young adulthood — teaching the grown-ups in their lives a few lessons along the way. They're the inspiration I need right now.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comAlong for the Ride is the most warm-hearted, tender story about one of the biggest milestones in a teen's life. It's based on the best-selling novel by Sarah Dessen and written by screenwriter Sofia Alvarez, who also adapted the YA novel To All the Boys I've Loved Before for the screen.Yeah I'm all grown up but I was thoroughly sucked into the story of Dash and Lily. The clue treasure hunt! The diary entries! Dash's distraction from his lonely Christmas! Lily finding her intellectual equal! The will they or won't they like each other in person! This is my idea of a perfect holiday story.Sex Education has gotten a green light for a fourth season, which is good news because I feel like these students are my friends — despite the fact that they get lucky more than I ever have in my entire life.High school sophomore Devi has a newly awakened libido that she's dying to try out in the hilarious Never Have I Ever. Co-created and co-written by Mindy Kaling, loosely based on her teen years, the series is full of her trademark vulnerable, warm-hearted hilarity. The third season debuts this summer. I've covered Cyrano de Bergerac retellings in previous episodes and The Half of It, from writer-director Alice Wu, is one of the very best. What do you do when you're a teen angry about the gender status quo? If you're the daughter of a former punk activist, you create your own radical feminist zine at your high school. That's Moxie! Directed by and starring Amy Poehler, with a screenplay adapted from the 2015 novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu, this show is comedy, a takedown of patriarchy and social commentary in one.Enola Holmes is the teen sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, and she's inherited the family talent for solving whodunnits. When her eccentric mother goes missing, she enlists her brothers' help in tracking her down. Millie Bobby Brown as Enola is a smart, spirited wonder, and Henry Cavill in 19th century coats and cravats is pure hotness.Support the show

Alice Wu began her career in software, but pivoted into screenwriting and directing in the late 90s. Her first film was a semi-autobiographic movie called Saving Face which she spent 5 years developing before it premiered at Toronto Film Festival in 2004. This brilliant film stars Michelle Krusiec as Wilhelmina 'Wil' Pang, a lesbian Chinese-American surgeon in New York City. Her identities as a gay woman, a Chinese-American in New York, and a devoted daughter to Ma, delicately played by Joan Chen, come into conflict when she falls for Vivian, played by Lynn Chen. This film deals with themes close to director Alice Wu's heart and navigates a tight-knit traditional community reckoning with its own notions of "saving face." While Wu's film was warmly received by critics and had a solid distribution from Sony Pictures, she did not go on to make another movie for almost two decades. Her follow-up film, which came to Netflix in 2020, is The Half of It, starring Leah Lewis as Ellie Chen, a graduating senior juggling her ambitions for college, the multiple jobs she takes on to support her father, and her identity as a queer woman. This movie takes a fun spin on the story of Cyrano de Bergerac when Ellie begins texting Aster on behalf of the lovable jock, Paul. Both of Alice Wu's films are tender yet amusing views into the intersectionality of Asian-American queer women, and Jake and Kevin recommend watching both! Why did Alice Wu take off so much time between these two movies, and why do we not see more films from her being produced? What is a himbo, really? Where is the change.org petition to get Joan Chen in more movies? These and more are (sort of) answered in this week's episode of Cinema Very Gay! In an...upsetting continuation of our miniseries on the Eating Out Cinematic Universe, we also spend some time digging into what went wrong with the third installment in the series, Eating Out: All You Can Eat. Neither as funny nor as titillating as the previous installment, has this series already peaked? Jim Verraros, we miss you!

Following our typical three part structure, we discuss a listener submitted hot take, a movie we watched together, and recommend each other media. Our lovely patron Elle (we appreciate our patrons so much!! https://www.patreon.com/TheLavenderMenace) submitted a hot take about misandry, which led Sunny to bring up Men's Rights Activists groups working on twisting civil rights law. You can find more info about what Sunny is talking about in this article: https://jezebel.com/men-accused-of-sexual-misconduct-on-campuses-are-suing-1848347194. Then, we discuss white women and misandry, and recommend the books They Were Her Property by Stephanie Jones-Rogers and Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall. We go on to discuss the movie The Birth of a Nation, transmisogyny, and getting discriminated against for an identity you don't even hold. Renaissance complains more about male feminists and the desire for oppressed groups to have all the answers. For our shared media portion of the episode, we discuss Saving Face (2004) Alice Wu, which we mentioned in our previous episode. We compare our Letterboxd star ratings, and Sunny compares the movie to Lulu Wang's The Farewell, and Wu's other movie The Half of It . Finally, Renaissance recommends HBO's Big Little Lies, and Sunny recommends the books The Perks of Loving A Wallflower by Erica Ridley and Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine. Neha and Caria from Not Having It All podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Neha's choice The Half of It. The Half of It is a 2020 Netflix American coming-of-age comedy drama written and directed by Alice Wu. It stars Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu a shy Chinese-American, Daniel Diemer as jock Paul Munsky who gets Ellie to write his love letters to Alexxis Lemire's Aster Flores. Set in the small town of Squahamish, Ellie lives with her widowed father, the station master at the local station. She reluctantly agrees to write romantic letters on behalf of Paul - a modern Cyrano de Bergerac - and finds herself falling for Aster in the process. The Half of It has a lot of heart, it's impossible not to fall in love with Ellie, watching her slowly fall in love with Aster and form a genuinely touching friendship with Paul. It also resolutely does not follow the conventional paths of teen comedy dramas, which is refreshing for the teen genre.   [supsystic-tables id=235] The scores for The Half of It was very high for recommendability and engagement, only losing points for repeat viewing to give a very respectable overall score of 3.78 What do you guys think? Li-Sha Chen, Li-Ya Peng, and Alice Wu with AIWA Tonight, we celebrate May Day, or International Worker's Day! We hear from Terry Valen and Lyle Prijoles with Filipino Community Center as well as Irma Shauf-Bajar with GABRIELA USA. They all make connections between immigrant rights and worker rights here in the U.S. and globally. We speak with two home care workers from Asian Immigrant Women Advocates who share the unique challenges they face as immigrant domestic workers. Diep Tran, head chef and owner of L.A. restaurant Good Girl Dinette tells us how “cheap eats” lists celebrate inexpensive immigrant foods at the expense of immigrant labor. And we talk with Zuha Khan who curated an amazing line-up of performers at El Rio this Saturday as a fundraiser for Bay Area Solidarity Summer. Diep Tran with Good Girl Dinette.
