In the first episode of Inside Jaws, you learned that the inspiration behind the iconic movie was a series of brutal shark attacks in 1916 that terrified residents of coastal New Jersey. Fast forward to Arizona in the 50s and a young Steven Spielberg was struggling to find his way. He was bad at school, sports, and just about everything else. But that all changed when he discovered the uncanny brilliance he had for making movies. If you want to hear the rest of Inside Jaws, you can binge all seven episodes exclusively on Wondery Plus.On Wondery Plus, you can listen to all your favorite podcasts early and ad-free. Mark Ramsey is an audio storyteller and maker of some of my favorite podcasts, including the Inside Series, which consisted of Inside Jaws, Inside The Exorcist, and Inside Psycho. Which if you have not listened to yet, do yourself a favor and download them all; they are a treat for any horror or cinema fan. In collaboration with his partner and sound designer Jeff Schmidt, Mark's specialty has become making memorable, compelling, and revolutionary audio experiences that thrill, inspire, make you smile, make you gasp, and touch your heart. Mark's latest creation is Dark Sanctum, a spine-tingling 7-episode limited series showcasing multiple stories about things that go bump in the night. Inspired by TV classics like The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, Dark Sanctum blends captivating storytelling with Mark's signature chilling audio and sound design in Dolby Atmos to transport listeners through a twisted and memorable audio thrill ride. He is a good friend of mine and always a very fun and exciting guy to talk to; please give it up for Mark Ramsey. Thank you for listening! Don't forget to subscribe. ----- Produced by Simpler Media

It was March 22, 1976 -- the first day of shooting "Star Wars." As Mark Ramsey's new "Inside Star Wars" reimagines that day in the Tunisian desert, it included hours of falling droids, an unlikely cameo by Jesus Christ, and lots of doubt from Sir Alec Guinness. Ramsey, who also created "Inside Jaws," "Inside Psycho" and other podcasts, recently joined "Shoot This Now" to talk about Carrie Fisher's incredibly odyssey from reluctant actress to galactic icon. Ramsey also loaned us this brief excerpt of "Inside Star Wars," which you can subscribe to right here: https://wondery.com/shows/inside-star-wars/With meticulous research and George Lucas-like levels of imagination, Ramsey and producer Jeff Schmidt take you back to the start of "Star Wars": Inside George Lucas' doubts, Carrie Fisher's apprehension, and Sir Alec Guinness outright bewilderment. If you've forgotten why you loved "Star Wars," Ramsey's latest will remind you.And Tim and Deirdre will be back next week with an all-new "Shoot This Now." It was made on a shoestring and dumped into a handful of movie theaters back in 1977. And then it changed the world. This is the story of George Lucas and his dream called “Star Wars.” It’s a story of the people who made the original classic and the people who did their very best to stop it dead. From the creators of Inside Psycho, Inside the Exorcist, and Inside JAWS, comes a new immersive audio biopic, Inside Star Wars. Premiering in all galaxies on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in water, 'Inside Jaws' comes along! The series inter-cuts between dramatisations of famous shark attacks, scenes from Steven Spielberg's directing career, and stories from the filming of 'Jaws' itself. Shooting the movie was a catalogue of disasters, with persistent problems affecting Bruce, the collective name for the mechanical sharks they used. We play a taster from Episode 5 of 'Inside Jaws'.
1916: The vicious “Man-eater of Matawan” meets his end. Cut to: The premiere and record-breaking success of JAWS. The awards Steven Spielberg expected – but never came. Even the world’s most commercial filmmaker wasn’t good enough to earn the respect of his peers. The death of Robert Shaw and the impact of his legacy on one-time rival Richard Dreyfus. Spielberg passes the torch to J.J. Abrams as the ORCA at Universal Studios crumbles to dust. Steven Spielberg experiences a remembrance of a heritage that once embarrassed him, but now makes him proud. 1968: A retired Navy Captain commits suicide. Many years earlier, his vessel suffered the worst naval disaster at sea in U.S. History. It was the U.S.S. Indianapolis, and hundreds of its crew were eaten by sharks. Cut to: 1974. Spielberg enlists writer Carl Gottlieb to “eviscerate” the script for JAWS. Spielberg’s friend George Lucas visits the mechanical shark in a workroom and gets his head stuck in it. Second unit footage is shot using real sharks and real shark cages, but the stuntman barely survives and locks himself in the toilet. Every day, more stress, more delays, more production troubles, more nightmares and – perpetually – the shark is not working. Will this nightmare ever end?Inside Jaws is presented by Audible. Hello, Boys and Ghouls. Kat here. Welcome to Episode 11 of our Behind the Screams series, where we explore the world of fear, shock and horror by talking to tastemakers in the genre. If you’re listening to this episode the day it drops, it’s Friday the 13th. Spooky. And today we’re going to be talking about a heavy hitter, but it’s not Jason. Today we’re talking about JAWS. I was lucky enough to snag an interview with Mark Ramsey, host and creator of Wondery’s INSIDE JAWS podcast, which is a deep dive into the making of the film and the man behind it - Steven Spielberg. Enjoy...
1916: A bounty is offered to whoever can kill the “Man-eater of Matawan.” Cut to: 1973. Peter Benchley sells the rights to JAWS to a pair of legendary Hollywood producers, Richard Zanuck and David Brown. Sensing a winner, Spielberg steals the galleys off Zanuck’s desk before insisting that this be his next project. Meanwhile, Zanuck and Brown toss away a would-be director who can’t distinguish between a whale and a shark, legendary director Henry Hathaway offers Spielberg some advice, and casting begins. Two very important executives want their wives to play the Chief’s wife. In Spielberg’s words, “Oy vey.”Inside Jaws is presented by Audible. 1916: Matawan Creek, New Jersey. This time, the shark’s victim is a child and the entire town is up in arms. Cut to: 1963: The Kennedy Assassination precipitates a frightening encounter on a dusty California mountain road – an encounter that leads to the thrilling Man vs. Big Rig fable Duel. This is Spielberg’s ticket to fame and fortune. Even if the truck doesn’t explode into a network-satisfying fireball, and even if Universal plucks choice scenes for an episode of The Incredible Hulk. In 1916 a killer shark terrorized the New Jersey shore in one of the inspirations for the movie JAWS. Cut to: Phoenix, AZ in the 1960’s, where a young Steven Spielberg is an outsider struggling to fit in. He’s ashamed of his heritage, bad at school, bad at sports, bad at everything. And then he discovers the magic of moving images on an oversized screen. It turns out he’s good at something after all.Inside Jaws is presented by Audible. 1916: Another vicious shark attack at the Jersey Shore. Cut to: Hollywood, 1965: Steven Spielberg hides out at Universal Studios in a toilet stall. He watches his idol, Alfred Hitchcock, at work. He fast-talks the guard at the studio gate day after day. He has an unpleasant encounter with a naked Marlon Brando – and all this while he’s still in high school. He lays it all on the line and heads west to Cal State Long Beach, where he makes a dirt-cheap, but impressive student film called Amblin that leads to a studio deal and an encounter with Joan Crawford.Inside Jaws is presented by Audible.
