“Nights like this were meant to be shared, remembered, and talked about for years."The 12 Dancing Princesses Month continues as Drew and Cassie take a look at the popular 2019 YA novel House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig. This book follows Annaleigh Thaumas, the sixth of twelve sisters, who lives a sheltered life at her family's stronghold in Highmoor. The four eldest Thaumas daughters have died over the last few years, and rumors are spreading that the family is cursed. As Annaleigh's remaining sisters begin to sneak out every night to attend glittering balls, Annaleigh herself is more occupied with seeking out answers about the sisters that are gone. We discuss our many frustrations with the book, the mysterious theme connecting the sisters' names, the incorporation of the gods of the book's world, the story's many twists, and more!   Join our community! Fantasy meets horror in this gripping read by Erin Craig; "Early town settlers fought off monstrous creatures in the woods, and whispers that the creatures still exist keep the Downings and their neighbors from venturing too far. When some townsfolk go missing on a trip to fetch supplies, a heavy unease settles over the Falls." As we slip into a world of monsters, come along for the ride to see if this story is for you!

Erika Krouse is a writer of both fiction and nonfiction, who joins the podcast to discuss her book, TELL ME EVERYTHING: THE STORY OF A PRIVATE INVESTIGATION. This is a memoir focused on a tale of true crime which parallels the narrator's personal history. This is a moving, painful story of power, powerlessness, and the way lives are left shattered when the system doesn't protect those who need it. In her book, Erika describes herself as simultaneously "forgettable" and "familiar," but ultimately she's the kind of person others will share their secrets with. This quality, paired with her own scars and knowledge as an abuse survivor, make her a unique voice to tell the story of efforts to hold a Colorado university legally responsible for creating a toxic environment that leads to sexual assault and abuse. Erika talks with Olivia about the choices she made in writing this book- including efforts to balance honesty with protecting the victims, the skills she's developed to manipulate others, and the implications of sharing her personal story of  abuse. TELL ME EVERYTHING is published by Flatiron Books, March 15,2022. For more on the author visit http://www.erikakrousewriter.com/ This week Olivia's joined by Hannah Makela, a Tucson-based book blogger and host of Brunch Babes Reads book club,  Hannah recommends Sydney Blondell's book of poetry MONARCH (which her will discuss on April 30th) and Erin A. Craig's SMALL FAVORS. Olivia and Hannah get hungry discussing tasty brunch favorites, and Olivia mentions a recent read: LIGHT FROM UNCOMMON STARS by Ryka Aoki. This is an important story to be told and Hahn's words resonate with truth and sparkle with her brilliant wit. I already want to reread it." - ERIN A. CRAIG, New York Times bestselling author of Small Favors and House of Salt and Sorrows "This is the purity culture-smashing book I needed as a teen. With clear respect for genuine faith, Hahn eviscerates the Church that emphasizes judgment before love. Never Saw You Coming somehow manages to be both sex-positive and faith-positive, and will be a balm to the bruised souls of so many readers." - JOY McCULLOUGH, author of Blood Water Paint "[A] love letter to the disillusioned youth group kid. And to every reader seeking to explore the ideas and truths separating faith from religion. Bold. Important. Beautiful.” - LAURA TAYLOR NAMEY, New York Times bestselling author of A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow (A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club YA Pick) "Erin Hahn's Never Saw You Coming is a balm of comfort. Readers will fall in love with the refreshing honesty of Meg and Micah, two teens who are heartbreakingly genuine in their struggles as they navigate questioning religion, faith, hypocrisy, and the true meaning of love and forgiveness. With her familiar humor and extraordinary prose, Hahn has created a world in which readers are invited to be still and know that they are more than enough just as they are. No conditions. Hedda och Martin gräver djupt och tipsar inte bara om dunderklassiker utan också en hel massa nyare böcker i månadens avsnitt. Hedda verkar ha utvecklat en fascination för böcker som på ett eller annat sätt utspelar sig i havsmiljö medan Martin har tagit tag i en bok som länge stått på att läsa listan, en bok som utspelar sig i en ganska konspiratorisk värld, men också en prequel. Böcker vi tipsar om i det här avsnittet är "Den oändliga historien" av Michael Ende "Deeplight" av Francis Hardinge "Balladen om sångfåglar och ormar" av Suzanne Collins "Isle of blood and stone" av Makiia Lucier "Syndätarens dotter" av Melinda Salisbury "House of salt and sorrows" av Erin A. While Joe refuses to read a Victorian-era play, he's more than happy to watch film adaptations of them! This week we're checking out a plethora of YA tropes: the collaboration between suitors in an impersonation ruse, a "tricky kiss" and an epistolary romance. On one side of the ring is Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, one of our few remaining Noah Centineo joints, which gets as many things right as it does wrong (pour one out for the disinterest in female friendships!). On the other is the queer, POC frontedThe Half Of It, which is a warm, delightful film. Aside from a slightly frustrating climax, this is an absolute gem and features one of the best friendships we've ever seen on the show.In homework: Brenna has finished Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo (mentioned in the May/June forecast) and "similar to The Virgin Suicides" Long Live The Tribe of Fatherless Girls by Tier Kiera Madden. Joe, meanwhile, advocates for the fantasy escapism of House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig.Wanna connect with the show? Katee sits down with the author of the New York Times bestselling “House of Salt and Sorrows.” Erin A. Craig has always loved telling stories. After getting her B.F.A. from the University of Michigan, in Theatre Design and Production, she stage managed tragic operas with hunchbacks, séances, and murderous clowns, then decided she wanted to write books that were just as spooky. Katee and Erin discuss the ins and outs of writing, how she got an agent and publisher, motherhood, stories of failure that lead to success… and more! So we're thrilled today to have as our guest Erin A. Craig, whose brilliantly conceived debut novel House of Salt and Sorrows is coming next week — a story that mingles eerie atmosphere, a tantalizing mystery, and a twist, of course, on one of the most haunting and beguiling of classic fairy stories, The Twelve Dancing Princesses. House of Salt and Sorrow hits bookshelves on August 6th, and in the run up to its arrival, Craig spoke with B&N's Melissa Albert about how her background stage-managing lavish productions helped spark her writer's imagination.
