Episode Notes Lemuel: I am Lemuel Gonzalez, repentant sinner, and along with Amity Armstrong, your heavenly host, I invite you to find a place in the pew for today's painless Sunday School lesson. Without Works. Amity: Today we will have an open discussion on the controversies around a recent film, “The Book of Clarence,”  a recent comedy about fictional characters who live in Jerusalem at the time of Christ, and interact with Jesus and his disciples.  Lemuel: The stories' protagonist is a feckless young man played by LaKeith Stanfeild. Accompanied by his best friend Elijah, played by RJ Cyler, the two travel a picaresque route through Jerusalem, meeting the disciples, the Holy parents, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, and Jesus himself.  Amity: The questions we will be asking are these: How does the film address the story?   Is the film sacrilegious or misrepresent the Bible story? Is it ever appropriate to make fun of sacred topics? Why the controversy? Is it because of the light tone taken to sacred subjects, or is it because the film represents nearly all of the biblical characters as African?

Editor - Tom Eagles ACE THE HARDER THEY FALL editor, Tom Eagles ACE first made a name for himself with his ACE Eddie-winning work on JOJO RABBIT (2019); a film for which he was also nominated for an Oscar® for Best Film Editing.  Looking to expand his career and broaden the scope of the work he could choose from, Tom was in the process of moving his family from his native New Zealand to Los Angeles, while he took on a new project with first-time director, Jeymes Samuel.  Due to the impact of COVID, that move was delayed and Tom wound up cutting his new film back home in New Zealand. In addition to directing THE HARDER THEY FALL, Jeymes Samuel is also known as a singer, songwriter and music producer who travels under the name "The Bullitts".  For his first time out as a filmmaker, Samuel has crafted a revisionist Western with a distinct emphasis on visual style and, of course, musicality.    THE HARDER THEY FALL is also one of the few, if not only, Westerns whose principal cast members are all Black and all the characters they play in the film are real.   The standout cast is anchored by actors; Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, RJ Cyler, Zazie Beets and Lakeith Stanfield. TOM EAGLES ACE Back in his home country of New Zealand, Tom Eagles built his career on a foundation of work with director, Taika Waititi.  Projects such as; WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014), HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016), the TV series WELLINGTON PARANORMAL (2018) and their critically-acclaimed film, JOJO RABBIT (2019).  Now working full time in Los Angeles after completing THE HARDER THEY FALL, Eagles is once again reuniting with Waititi for his next film. Ugh.Brenna and Joe jump back into sick lit for Jesse Andrews' atrocious 2012 novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and its (better) 2015 Sundance award winning film adaptation by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, starring Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke and a stunt cast of adults. We dedicate A LOT of time up front addressing our issues with the book, which is racist, misogynistic and features one of the most excruciating mediocre white boy protagonists since I Love You, Beth Cooper.  We find it hilarious that Andrews believes he's subverting (or avoiding) YA tropes; instead he's simply produced an unreadable book. Our advice: do not read this "book"!The film - ironically adapted by Andrews - smooths out some of the books more egregious issues, but it comes at a cost. Earl is diminished to a non-character and Greg's selfish behaviour can't be redeemed. The actors and  Gomez-Rejon's vibrant, experimental direction save this film.Wanna connect with the show? Yo, what a story this kid RJ Cyler has. He used to be homeless and now he's the freakin' blue power ranger. He killed it on that Showtime series I'M DYING UP HERE. I don’t know if Dacre’s better known for the Red Power Ranger or Billy Hargrove (the reallllly not-so-nice brother) on Stranger Things at this point!

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Golden Globe Award Winner Meg Tilly of War Machine. An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General's roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody - raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader's ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story's core is Brad Pitt's sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist's no-holds-barred exposé. The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy and Meg Tilly. Ian Bryce and Plan B's Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt serve as producers. James Skotchdopole serves as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017.   Meg Tilly is a Canadian-American actress and novelist. For her role in the 1985 film Agnes of God, she won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

There comes a time in every podcast's lifespan where the hosts figure out they have no idea what they are doing. This is not news, but we finally admit it to ourselves. And so this episode is going to be a little different. The topic du jour is 'Saban's Power Rangers,' sponsored by Krispy Kreme. Don't get too excited, they sponsored the movie - not the podcast. But none of that matters anymore, because we have a new corporate structure. Tom tries his best to convince the guys that Saban's Power Rangers didn't finally win him over (we all know he watched the original series in College), Kevin writes some interesting fan-fic in real time, and Joe tells us about some weird fan-made Power Rangers film starring James Van Der Beek. A perfect entry point for a #trypod recommendation, this week's episode asks the hard questions like: Why does everything have to look so dark and shitty? Who thought autism was a great device to play for laughs? And where the hell are Bulk and Skull?!? PLUS: Alex Jones eulogizes a friend while Gallagher loses out on ANOTHER role! Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G., and, somehow, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, and Bill Hader; directed by Dean Israelite.

Quick Rundown: This Power Rangers movie turned out to be quite the surprise and a great addition to the franchise mythos. You have the core 5 cast who have great chemistry with one another with RJ Cyler being the breakout star. The action is serviceable and works for what the movie is accomplishing in giving us these rangers in action. Elizabeth Banks hams it up as Rita Repulsa and it works greatly. Overall this is an entertaining movie that will sneak up on you. 3BG rating: 3.5 outta 5 Twitter: @DeeTheBlackGeek @3BlackGeeks

Hollister and O’Toole take a look at this year’s Sundance favorite (winning both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award): the quirky and moving "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl". Novel and screenplay by Jesse Andrews. Starring Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, and Olivia Cooke. Co-starring Connie Britton, Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Molly Shannon. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Glee”) – who said movies like "Harold and Maude" served as inspiration. “It’s that school of filmmaking — nothing too slick. One false note and it becomes sentimental… inauthentic.” Here’s your chance to re-live high school – without being seen.
