Silken Laumann captured the hearts and minds of Canadians by rowing for this country in three separate Olympics — and winning three Olympic medals. She also won a world championship and a gold medal in the Pan American Games. Her athletic career was exceptional. But what's so interesting about Silken is that she's also been a champion on another front — raising awareness about mental health. She's so serious about it that she founded an organization called Unsinkable, which helps people take steps toward mental well-being. She's also been very open about her own mental health journey and struggles.

It's an absolute thrill for me to welcome celebrated, four-time Canadian Olympian Silken Laumann to the show. Many of you will remember Silken's remarkable story as one of Canada's most beloved and accomplished Olympic rowers. In 1992 she was warming up for the World Cup Regatta in Germany when another boat collided with hers at full speed. Her lower right leg received devastating injuries to bone and muscle and she was told she'd never compete at the Olympics again. But 10 weeks later she won an Olympic Bronze medal. Overcoming that difficulty is part of what's made Silken a role model for others to overcome difficult circumstances. It's part of what inspired her to write her book, Unsinkable, and now to host a storytelling website by the same name, with a mission to empower Canadians to achieve better mental, physical and spiritual health. With four kids in her blended family, Silken works hard to cultivate an atmosphere that's honest and truthful about the tough stuff we go through, including mental illness. Silken speaks frankly about being raised by mother who has never accepted the help she needed for her mood disorder, as well as about Silken's own bouts with depression. She and I delve into what it takes to cultivate a culture of openness about mental health and comfort with vulnerability in our families. Show Notes Love our work? She was reigning world champion in single sculls rowing, but her doctor told her that she might never row again. Twenty seven days, five operations, and countless hours of gruelling rehab later, she was back in her rowing shell and began to pursue her Olympic dream all over again. On August 2nd 1992, Silken made the greatest comeback in Canadian sports history and one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports history, winning a bronze medal at the Olympics and ultimately capturing the hearts of millions of people. Now retired from rowing with three Olympic medals, she has continued to inspire and encourage people to dream, live in the moment, and embrace failure as a stepping stone to progress. She has launched a new initiative called We Are Unsinkable, which is gathering stories from people who have overcome obstacles in their lives and sharing those to help other people become inspired. I'm really excited about having Silken on the show. We do a review of her entire sporting history, learn a lot about the challenges that she faced after the Olympics were over, and ultimately landing this incredible new initiative that she's launching. You can check her out on all of her social media which are listed at her website silkenlaumann.com and at weareunsinkable.com. Despite having retired from competition over 20 years ago, Olympic rower Silken Laumann remains a major voice in the world of sport. Since retiring, Silken has advocated for a greater focus on mental health amongst athletes. Listen as Silken and POV host Anastasia Bucsis have a frank and honest conversation about their own struggles, and discuss why it's so hard for athletes to talk about mental health.

Millions of people have turned to wearables to track their steps, monitor their heart rate and sleeping patterns, and more. For many of us, the fitness tracker is a constant companion. Should tracking our mental health be any different? This was the theme of the latest RBC Disruptors in advance of Mental Illness Awareness Week. The Fit Bottomed Girls Podcast Ep 76 Olympic Rower/Public Speaker Silken Laumann   If you are looking for a little inspiration and wisdom for your ear holes--then get ready for our guest today, Olympian, author, life coach and advocate Silken Laumann. Her multitude of accomplishments includes winning the bronze medal in rowing in 1992 (and doing so just ten weeks after a brutal leg injury!) as well as the silver medal in Atlanta in 1996. Silken is one of Canada's most well-respected athletes so it was surprising for many to learn in her memoir Unsinkable that growing up she struggled with an eating disorder while being raised by a mother with an undiagnosed mental illness. Tea with a Titan: Conversations Steeped in Greatness |Achievement | Olympics | Olympians| Success | Athletes | Entrepreneurs

If there’s something on this planet that’s more inspiring than the concept of those who rise again after they fall, well, I’m afraid I just don’t know what it is. And perhaps no other Canadian athlete most exemplifies the notion of “the comeback” quite like four-time Olympic rower, three-time Olympic medalist, Silken Laumann. After a horrific 1992 rowing accident that all but completely destroyed her leg, she was told there was a strong chance that she would never row again. The thing of it all? This was 10-weeks out from the Barcelona Olympic Games, and Silken had every intention of being there. With goal setting, visualization, and pure grit (including several hospital procedures and intense rehab), Silken made it to Barcelona, and to a medal finish at that. We talk about her challenging childhood years, redefining fear, and what the Olympics mean to her.

Just ten weeks before the Barcelona Olympics Silken Laumann, a Canadian rower, suffered a horrific leg injury. After six weeks she got back on the water. "Here I was still using a wheelchair, a massive skin graft on my leg. I could not walk without pain. I got into that boat with some help, there were a few adjustments to take some of the strain off my broken ankle."After four operations, she managed to make it to the final and win a bronze medal, becoming a national hero in Canada.
