SpaceFest, run by Greywood Arts in partnership with the National Space Centre (NSC) and supported by Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland, celebrates Science Week by combining science and the arts to explore the cosmos. This year's festival offers a week-long programme for adults, teens, and families, running from Sunday, 10 November through Sunday, 17 November. Attendees can look forward to experiments, exhibitions, tours, classes, workshops, and more, all accessible at https://spacefest.ie. Now in its fourth year, SpaceFest is expanding beyond its previous home base at the NSC. 2024 events will be held across Cork City at venues including Marina Market, UCC, Blackrock Castle Observatory, and Cork County Cricket Club. In East Cork, activities will take place at Greywood Arts (Killeagh) and the National Space Centre (Midleton). Some of the dozen SpaceFest events around Cork City and County include: Space Cocktails Speakeasy (€20): What does a nebula taste like in liquid form? What cocktail could we make with ingredients found on Mars? Dr Alfredo Carpineti, also known as the Astroholic, will lead an Astro-inspired mixology workshop with hands-on demonstrations. Ballymaloe-trained chef, and Food Truck alumni Niamh Hergarty will pair tastings inspired by the first fermentation on the ISS. It's About Time: Distant Galaxies Poetry Workshop (Free): Participants will have the opportunity to tour UCC's historic 1880 Crawford Observatory in a private visit led by UCC Head of Astrophysics Dr Paul Callanan. A 90-minute workshop led by poet Kerri Sonnenberg will follow, pondering how images of distant galaxies from billions of years in the past, their light just now reaching us, causes us to reconsider what we think we know about time. Stellar Perspectives at Solaris: (Free): An astrophotography exhibit featuring images of the heavens and night skies over Ireland. The nine photographers whose work is displayed represent members of photography, astrophotography and astronomy clubs from across the country as well as independent photographers. The week culminates with Cosmic Debris (Free), an immersive multimedia exhibition that challenges the audience to rethink our place in the cosmos and the impact we leave behind. Held at the National Space Centre beneath the site's iconic 32-metre Big Dish, tickets include a tour of the facility, which only opens to the public for this annual event. Greywood Artists-in-residence Nicholas Carn (UK), Kerry Guinan (IE) and artist/engineer Luisa Charles (UK) present collaboratively devised kinetic, levitating sculptures and moving images in response to the issue of space debris. Selected from over 100 applicants, these three internationally exhibited artists engaged with both Blackrock Castle Observatory and UCC's Crawford Observatory during their residency at Greywood Arts in Killeagh in order to bring hard science into the creative interpretation on exhibit. Big Listening and Radio Silence, featuring sound, sculptures and listening devices created by nearly 150 young participants from Greywood's space-themed STEAM programme, will also be on display for visitors to see and interact with. As one of a number of accessibility initiatives rolled into the Festival, a special session for Deaf and Hard of Hearing visitors facilitated by ISL interpreter Keira O'Connell is available for booking online with the rest of the week-long programme at https://spacefest.ie. For ALL the Cosmically Curious in Celebration of Science Week at SpaceFest Join Fig O'Reilly for a free online event on November 19th exploring success in STEAM, talking about the launch of Ireland's first satellite EIRSAT-1, and answering questions from participants. Former Miss Ireland and NASA Datanaut Fionnghuala "Fig" O'Reilly will be the guest of honour at a free, public online workshop as part of the Science Foundation Ireland funded SpaceFest at the National Space Centre in Cork. The event will offer members of the public the rare chance to ask questions of a leading figure in Ireland's science outreach and emerging space industry. An engineer and regional director of NASA's Space Apps Challenge in Washington, DC, she was recently invited by the European Space Agency to the European Space Research and Technology Centre. Located in the Netherlands, the centre is ESA's main development and test campus for spacecraft and space technology. Fig visited as part of the Irish delegation supporting the launch of EIRSAT-1, Ireland's first satellite. In 2019 Fig herself made history as the first woman of colour and Black woman to represent Ireland at the international Miss Universe competition, highlighting the need for diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.) She subsequently launched Space to Reach, an organization dedicated to advancing Black and Brown women in STEM. On Sunday 19 November, she'll talk with artist Linda Curtain about the value of extending STEM to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathmatics) and the intersection of space and art. Their conversation will also focus on the need for DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) in all aspects of STEM and the importance of companies reflecting the markets they serve. Members of the public who register for the event here will have the opportunity to ask Fionnghuala about EIRSAT-1, her STEM advocacy for women and for women of colour, and her experiences in the space industry.

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." These words, spoken by President John F. Kennedy in May 1961, changed the lives of twelve Americans who walked on the moon. The Wonder of it All focuses on the Apollo astronauts; Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Edgar Mitchell, John Young, Charles Duke, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, as they reflect on the training, the tragedies, being on the moon and the impact of space travel. Recently, cohosts Eleanor O'Rangers and Tom Hill had the pleasure of interviewing David Chudwin, a fellow space enthusiast who Eleanor had become acquainted with during her time living in the greater Chicago area. Little did she know that this mild-mannered physician allergist was soon to become a space author! It turns out that David has an interesting story to tell with a connection to the Apollo 11 moon launch… and 50 years later, he has published his memoirs from that time, entitled, “I was a Teenage Space Reporter.” In part 1 of our Space 3D interview with David, he recounts how he got the opportunity, along with a friend of his, to travel to Cape Canaveral to cover the Apollo 11 launch as a student reported for the Michigan Daily+++++++++++++++David Chudwin, MD was the only college journalist accredited by NASA to cover the 1969 Apollo 11 launch and first landing on the Moon. At age 19, he was one of only a handful of teenagers with official press passes at the Kennedy Space Center for the launch.Chudwin has been a writer since high school, when he was a reporter and an editor of his high school newspaper, The Torch. He then attended the University of Michigan where he was a reporter and an editor of The Michigan Daily, becoming the Managing Editor for the Class of 1972. During this time, he covered the Apollo 11 launch for the College Press Service Wire Network and The Daily. He was also selected to attend a summer journalism program at Ohio State University that involved an internship on the copy desk of The Cleveland Press. He decided to go into medicine instead of journalism, but as a result of his Apollo 11 experiences he developed a life-long interest in space exploration. Chudwin has written about Apollo 11 in a variety of media, including magazines (Spaceflight), hobby publications (Astrophile) and online (collectSPACE and a Facebook series of 70 daily posts in 2014). He has spoken about Apollo 11 at schools and at space meetings, including Spacefest in 2016. Chudwin is well known in the space community, and Apollo astronauts such as Charlie Duke, Fred Haise, Jack Lousma and Al Worden wrote endorsements for this book.He has been an active blogger online, participating in blogs about space history, space memorabilia, unmanned planetary exploration and the Apollo program. Chudwin is one of the original members of the Space Hipsters group on Facebook, comprising over 16,000 of the most dedicated and influential space enthusiasts around the world.Chudwin received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and had further medical training at The University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of California, San Francisco. He is a practicing allergist/immunologist in the Chicago suburbs. He is the author of over 30 medical research publications and has been a peer reviewer for research articles about space medicine. He was married and has two grown children, Adam and Stacy, both of whom are interested in the space program but not to the same extent as their dad. He lives in the northern suburbs of Chicago.Reach David @ David.Chudwin@gmail.com

On this episode of Talking Space, we continue our discussion of SpaceFest VI, which was held in May in Pasadena, California. We begin where we left off last episode, with a look at some of the talks and panels from this year's event. We look at ion engines, the Russian space program, comets and more, all of which were discussed at the event. We include a final recap of some more of our favorite moments, and discuss a trip to the Mount Wilson Observatory after the event. Finally, we wrap up with another space event that happened the week after SpaceFest, and that was the International Space Development Conference, or ISDC. Mark Ratterman joins us with a special interview with Azam Shaghaghi about the event. On part two of our two-part special on SpaceFest V, we invite attendee Libby Norcross to join us as we discuss the rest of the Sunday panels, which included the Mars and asteroid panels. Discussed are the benefits of going to Mars, robots vs. humans, and what the experts such as Emily Lakdawalla and Peter Smith think about the idea of commercial companies such as Mars One and Inspiration Mars. We then hear from the asteroid panel, which includes discussions on commercial mining, how much science that actually gives, and if we're blurring the line of science fiction and science fact too soon. You'll hear from experts such as Deep Space Industries' Rick Tumlinson and Geoff Notkin, Planetary Resources' Chris Lewicki, and planetary scientist Dan Durder. For more on Libby, visit http://libbydoodle.com As well, our thoughts go out to Gene Mikulka and his family as they deal with a difficult time. Host this week: Sawyer Rosenstein. On this special two-part episode of Talking Space, we begin by discussing last week's Soyuz launch before devling into the weekend-long event in Tucson, AZ. The event involved vendors and artists who specialize in space, as well as an impressive panel of astronauts which spanned every single American manned space flight program from Mercury to shuttle. On top of the astronauts were many panels and discussions. You'll hear bits from the talks by Dr. Carolyn Porco famous for working on Cassini and Prof. Brian Cox. We then jump to the Apollo astroanuts panel and hear their views on where we are and where we should be going in space. Tune in next week for two of the best panels of the show: the panel on Mars and on asteroids, which includes thoughts from members of the private sector. NOTE: This show was recorded on the week of May 27th, however due to technical difficulties, it was released this week, so some news is out of date.
