Today, Asif and Ali discuss the career of the legendary singer Billy Joel (1:08). They start off by discussing his accolades, how Joel is compared to his contemporaries and his early years. Où l'on parle de Billy Joel, mais aussi de poils qui se dressent en écoutant des gens chanter.
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue became a cultural phenomenon in the mid 70's thanks in large part to supermodel Cheryl Tiegs who was on the cover in 1970, 1975 and again in 1983 becoming the first Swimsuit to be on the cover three times. She went from a shy midwestern gal to living in New York City as one of the top models in the world thanks in large part to those 3 covers for SI. But her most famous shot was probably the fishnet suit she wore in 1978. Lets just say not much was left to the imagination and a star was born. In 1989, Sports Illustrated celebrated the 25th anniversary of the swimsuit issue with a 306 page layout that celebrated the woman over the years that made the popular publication what it was... a must see event that arrived in your mailbox in the middle of January to the delight of most men, young and old, and to the chagrin of mothers and wives across the land. Kathy Ireland was on the cover of that 1989 SI and once again, Cheryl Tiegs was a part of it... one of 9 times she appeared in the iconic issue. Curry Kirkpatrick wrote the corresponding piece of Tiegs in 1989 and remembers her as breathtaking in her early 40's as she had been 19 years earlier when she first was on a cover for Sports Illustrated. Kirkpatrick recalls when he first met Cheryl in her penthouse in New York City... and exactly what she wore as they strolled through the Big Apple to grab lunch on the Upper East Side. It was the only time the SI writer ever worked on the swimsuit issue and it's one he never forgot. He tells us on the show how Tiegs became the first SI model to become a huge celebrity and how she wasn't a fan of being in the spotlight. He recollects how Cheryl became a full fledged business-woman and paved the way for future models to be more than just a beautiful woman. And he tells how in the end, he received a hand-written note from Cheryl telling him she loathed the article Curry wrote of her in that 1989 issue. Why? Hear for yourself on the Past Our Prime podcast. Listen wherever you get your podcasts and hear a great tidbit of how the Uptown Girl, Christie Brinkley, and husband Billy Joel, were purposely left behind at the airport one year by the woman who ran the entire project, Julie Campbell. Netflix is raising their rates... AGAIN, and people are somehow blaming Meghan and Harry despite Netflix signing SEVERAL multi-million dollar contracts for many years prior to signing their contract with the Sussexes. Let's dissect the ridiculousness. The Ethiopian government will reportedly be demanding that King Charles return "immoral" artifacts that have been kept in Britain since the 1868 Battle of Magdala. Per a report published by The Telegraph on Friday, Jan. 24, officials in Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa will be pushing for the return of items from the Royal Collection as well as treasures kept elsewhere in the United Kingdom, such as the British Museum. The items kept by the King are sacred to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, per the outlet, which also notes that the government in the United Kingdom will be asked to support Ethiopia's push for the items' return next year. The Ethiopian Heritage Authority will lead the move for the return of the items alongside the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, according to The Telegraph. EXCLUSIVE: The memoir of a choreography teacher who secretly taught Princess Diana to dance is to be turned into a 90-minute feature documentary. Canadian producer-distributor Sphere Media has secured rights to Anne Allan's ‘Dancing with Diana: A Memoir‘ and will co-produce it with Alan Clements' Glasgow-based Two Rivers Media. Sphere Abacus, the sales arm of Sphere, will shop the doc internationally. It's early days for the project so no network or streamer is attached yet. Scottish-Canadian dancer and London City Ballet mistress Allan was the late Princess Diana's dance teacher, and co-choreographed her ‘Uptown Girl' routine at London's Royal Opera House, which she surprised Prince Charles with in 1985. Allan's memoir, which recounts the performance, was released last year. You might have noticed a theme with some recent podcasts, as I've been searching out inspirational older athletes to share with you just what the future might hold if you have the enthusiasm and adjust your approach in the right way for you. I've struggled to find other coaches who specialise in working with older athletes, but that's corrected today as I speak with Jo Lewis. Jo is a female triathlete in the 65-69 age group. Billy Joel: The Video Album Volume II is another back and forth across Billy's discography. The ten selections here vary from promo reels shot in the 1970s, unvarnished black-and-white live footage and barebones soundstage performances in the early 80s, to full-blown stylized and choreographed productions from the peak of the MTV era. Once again, we're treated to a revue of how music videos progressed as an art form as MTV changed the way people consumed music and viewed the people who made it. Billy fans in particular can enjoy up-close-and-personal live footage of songs like “Los Angelenos” and “Everybody Loves You Now,” shot in a small club. And the cuts from Glass Houses also feature the band as they'd perform on stage or in rehearsal. These vignettes sit alongside the entry for “Uptown Girl,” arguably his most well-known video, along with other highly-dramatized productions for songs like “Allentown” and “The Longest Time.” Join us as we dig deep into BIlly Joel: The Video Album Volume II. ------ Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing
It's time for the legendary song that kicks off side 2 of 1983's An Innocent Man album, Uptown Girl. This song is and was a smash hit and is performed at every single concert as one of the encore numbers. The music video was an MTV Classic and the Royal Family even knows about it, although they refer to him as Billy Jo-el, as if he's from Krypton. But, whatever the case may be, it is a Billy Joel staple. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
is this a snooze fest? Does Derrick make a good talent show host?
Question Kyle joins me for musings on concept albums as I fondly recall the 1999 gimmick-compilation "Short Music for Short People" from the pop-punk mavens at Fat Wreck Chords. The idea: 101 bands, 101 songs, each one 30 seconds long. The royalty of the genre all contributed - Blink-182, NOFX, The Offspring, everyone you remember from the late Clinton years. An impressive, if not especially listenable, idea for an album. The podcast opens with a brief sample of "Ketchup Soup" by the Teen Idols, their contribution to this album. To purchase the album, please visit the Fat Wreck website for a digital download or other format. Bonus: 29 minutes in I start singing "Uptown Girl." Dem Vinyl Boyz are dropping the needle this week from the Franklin Social House taking their vinyl on the road for all to hear. 'Billy Joel's Greatest Hits' was released in 1987 which includes the artist's work from 1973 to 1985 and contains some of his most renowned records such as “Piano Man”, “Uptown Girl”', and “The Longest Time”. The album is certified double diamond and has sold over 23 million units tying Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' for the sixth most certified album of all time in the United States. The album kicks off with "Piano Man," the first disc runs through a good chunk of his early work before arriving at his golden age of the late '70s; some of these songs, including "Captain Jack" and "New York State of Mind," weren't strictly hits, but were popular within his stage show and became radio hits. Over the next disc and a half, there's so many hits, it's inevitable that some are left off such as "Honesty" and "Sometimes a Fantasy" but still includes "Just the Way You Are," "Only the Good Die Young," "My Life," "You May Be Right," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Don't Ask Me Why," "Allentown," "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl," among many others are present and accounted for. In short, Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 & 2 encapsulates exactly why Billy Joel was one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the late '70s and early '80s and is still described as a legendary artist today.
