First off, there is no place really like the Sunsphere. Built for the World's Fair, the sphere is a unique landmark with loads to see. And, it's just going to get better and better. For more information (and tickets) check out the Sunsphere's website. Or you can follow them on Facebook.Hey, let's all go to the Sunsphere!
From May 23, 2023: For fun under the sun, downtown Knoxville has plenty of patios to offer. And as the weather keeps getting warmer, our thirst keeps getting stronger for outdoor spaces to enjoy drinks and food. Host Ryan Wilusz, along with producer Brianna Paciorka and higher education reporter Keenan Thomas, average their individual scores to determine an admittedly unscientific ranking of patios in the Scruffy City. Scores are given a letter score, with a special "S" ranking we are calling "the Sunsphere," reserved for patios that should be considered a Knoxville icon. It's not too late to make New Year's resolutions. Just blame the delay on the freezing snow and heated election cycle that has everyone talking. As the downtown growth and development reporter for Knox News, there's not much host Ryan Wilusz hasn't experienced in the center of our city. But with 2024 now upon us, we invited colleague Keenan Thomas to join and discuss what we hope to accomplish in downtown Knoxville this year. A lot of what we came up with involves supporting local, whether it's attending more shows or spreading our money around at more local shops and new downtown restaurants. Listen now to hear what we came up with! "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com. Want more downtown analysis? This year has been full of surprises in downtown Knoxville, from a new Sunsphere paint job to shocking business closings. But a lot of what happened in 2023 was on our radar heading into the year, and we documented those predictions on "The Scruffy Stuff" back in January. This week, hosts Ryan Wilusz and Brianna Paciorka of Knox News look back to see how we fared and to discuss whether any of our missed predictions could happen in 2024. No tuxedos, trophies or acceptance speeches required. These are the SCRUFFYs – similar to the Grammys, with a lot less music and a lot more Knoxville. As the downtown reporter for Knox News, host Ryan Wilusz has seen plenty of exciting (and sometimes crazy) things happen in the center of our city over the years. But a Sunsphere paint job, Old City street fight, plant vandalism and pirate bar were not on his 2023 Bingo card. Obscure events deserve obscure categories, though we've included some more traditional honors as well. Listen as Ryan and guest host Keenan Thomas share their picks for the best of 2023. The Sunsphere: It's bold, gold and getting kind of old. The structure has been plagued by some prohibiting factors over the years, including a lack of elevator capacity and nearby parking, as well as a center stalk that limits floor space. Surely, something can be done to make this attraction more … attractive. Brianna Paciorka, Keenan Thomas and Ryan Wilusz chat about their big ideas for alternative ways the Sunsphere could be used moving forward, from adventure attractions to themed bars. Plus, should a "Simpsons" reference resurface? "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com. Want more downtown analysis? The Tennessee Theatre marquee or the Sunsphere? Market Square or the Old City? This exercise feels a bit like picking your favorite child – or your favorite episode of "The Scruffy Stuff." Hopefully, this week's episode is a candidate. Growth and development reporter Silas Sloan joins host Ryan Wilusz to pick between a handful of Knoxville essentials, ranging from bars to music festivals to natural landmarks. . A rap about the Sunsphere? A poem about Randy Boyd? With the rise of artificial intelligence software, we fed some downtown Knoxville prompts to ChatGPT and predicted what it would say. Host Ryan Wilusz is joined on this episode by higher education reporter Keenan Thomas, who has reported on the rise of ChatGPT on the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus and how officials are adapting. Knoxville has charm, but a handful of ugly structures in the city's core are dictionary-definition scruffy: unkempt, shabby and worn. If character is what makes a downtown Knoxville building attractive, then lack of character can make it an eyesore. Ryan Wilusz, Kelli Krebs and Brenna McDermott explore the ugliest buildings in downtown Knoxville. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.
This episode stars Andrew Farkas (The Great Indoorsman, The Big Red Herring, Sunsphere and Self-Titled Debut). It was recorded in-person, yes, you read that correctly, at Longman & Eagle in Chicago, IL in July 2022.
Whether you loathe the oddball design or think the Sunsphere is pure gold, there's no point in arguing facts: The big, bold and divisive structure is the undisputed icon of the Scruffy City. But let's imagine for a moment the golden ball in the sky didn't exist. What would be the icon of Knoxville? Ryan Wilusz, Calvin Mattheis and Brenna McDermott debate the most iconic structures, signs, stadiums and more to determine what Knoxville's icon would be if not for the Sunsphere. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.
Ryan Wilusz and Calvin Mattheis of Knox News are joined by Sweet P's founder Chris Ford, who talks about purchasing the 1982 World's Fair logo, finding funky fair memorabilia and realizing the importance of keeping the international exposition's history alive. Brenna McDermott, growth and development editor at Knox News, then joins Ryan to debate the single biggest impact the 1982 World's Fair had on downtown Knoxville. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.
Scott West said he would never help pioneer another district after Market Square, but he is poised to break that promise with a moonshot idea. The Moonsphere would loom large over LunaVerse, a 3.5-acre arts and entertainment district he wants to create on property formerly occupied by the International. West joins the podcast to share his grand vision for the western edge of downtown Knoxville. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com
Brenna McDermott, growth and development editor for Knox News, joins Ryan and Calvin to share ideas to improve the look and feel of downtown. From improving Knoxville's riverfront to installing photogenic landmarks, the trio explores all that could be done to make Knoxville an even more attractive city for locals and visitors. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.
If you have the stockings, we have the "stuff" to help you make the most of the holiday season in Knoxville. Ryan and Calvin discuss signature events, including the Christmas parade, as well as some more-unique ideas to experience Christmas cheer in the shadows of the Sunsphere. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.
Just like the Scruffy City nickname born from the 1982 World's Fair, the event's signature monument, the Sunsphere, remains a divisive topic in Knoxville. Ryan and Calvin have their own thoughts about the golden globular structure, which they discuss on this week's episode. Their conversation goes beyond looks, as they also talk about the best possible uses for the landmark. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.

I don't believe we have formally met, though I know quite a bit about you, Samson Shelby. I am the commander of the forces in this territory. I believe you know my child, Owaine. I am contacting you not because you are the face of a terrorist organization that has, admittedly, been a thorn in my side for some time now, but because of a common enemy. Elijah has shown his true colors, finally, and buried a dagger in my back. It's a feeling I trust you are still familiar with. Unfortunately, I do not have the time, or resources to hunt that snake down. That is why I am contacting you. Attached to this message are the security codes you will need to dock at the facility you know as The Sunsphere. I know you will wonder if this is a trap, and I don't blame you thinking so. Do with them what you will, but I can tell you know that he is vulnerable right now, he is on the back foot, and for the years that I have known him, I have never seen him show an ounce of regret for the years he took away from you.

The priorities are the data banks, everything else in that facility is expendable. Yes, the staff. Did I stutter? As long as we have the data the project can continue. I want Elijah Hope-For-The-Harvest brought to heel.

Commander Evans has deemed them objects of interest, otherwise they would be decommissioned and parts at this moment. Unit A has been making odd noises. Whirs and clicks of internal mechanisms. They have a rhythmic quality to them. Almost speech-like. A briefing packet sent to us from The Sunsphere facility urged us to place them in containment together. They said this might lead to a breakthrough in the program.

We got to move fairly quickly. Commander Evans is already making some very big plays. He's seizing and converting any UPRC ran facilities he can get a hold of the higher ups won't notice. The Sunsphere was first, but he's also co-opted Big Rock Candy Mountain. He figures if it's places folks don't care about the people in then ain't nobody gonna come snooping when the status quo changes. That was step one though, getting logistics in order. It's getting to be time to start rolling these things off the line en mass. After what went down at the Johnnies meeting he got the itch to bring the hammer down hard.
Frank bought 45 rolls of toilet paper for Krisha while he was at Sam's Club. The next day, they met near the Sunsphere to interview Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn arrived just as Krisha was transferring the toilet paper from Frank's car to her own. Krisha's kids use a lot of toilet paper. Frank admits to using too many paper towels. Krisha has stopped using Clorox wipes after reading a study that overuse of disinfectants only leaves the strongest germs that aren't killed by the wipes. Frank got a part time radio job. The station's offices are inside the Sunsphere. Frank noticed some parking spaces that say “Reserved for Sunsphere clients.” He texted the owner of the radio station to ask permission to park in the company spot. Kathryn noticed the “No Swimming / No Wading” signs at World's Fair Park. Krisha told Kathryn about swimming in the water on the Fourth of July during a paddle-boat race while Frank did live play-by-play on WBIR. I am still not sure how Elijah slithered his way into his position, but somehow he was able to make himself head of a defense research facility commonly known as The Sunsphere. One of the highlights of Knoxville’s International Biscuit Festival is the Mr. & Miss Biscuit Pageant. This episode profiles Liz Barr, the reigning Miss Biscuit 2013. Her win was surely secured after she performed an interpretive dance to an original love song...about a biscuit. The pageant's talent competition was serious. One guy ate a spoonful of flour. There was a woman who carved a butter sculpture to resemble the Sunsphere, one of the city’s iconic landmarks. And then there was a woman who sang an a cappella piece she wrote to the tune of the Little Mermaid song, “Part of Your World.” Originally aired August 8, 2013.

In 1982 something happened in Knoxville, Tennessee that shocked the world – dare I say it, it probably shocked Knoxville itself. Knoxville became home to the World’s Fair.By all accounts the event was a great success – today artifactual vestiges are scattered throughout the leafy hills of old East Tennessee – beer steins, pennants, shot glasses, and t-shirts abound at antique stores, the roads are dotted with signs that show distance in kilometers as well as miles, and of course the gleaming emblem of the fair, the glorious, golden Sunsphere stands as a majestic colossus, visible from anywhere in downtown Knoxville, including the nosebleed seats of the University of Tennessee’s old Neyland Stadium. What many people don’t know, but absolutely should, is that a the story of the World’s Fair is tied intimately to a beer, a beer that was available for less than a year, a beer that even in its short tenure was sold with nine different can designs, making it an instant collectible, a triumph of marketing.Alas, from all reports, the original version of World’s Fair Beer was - - - not good. We can’t attest for that, given that your hosts were barely in elementary school when it was produced, but when we heard it was being reformulated and rereleased, this time as a 35 IBU pale ale, well, we just had to try it.Today, on Pickled Eggs & Cold Beer, we’re talking about World’s Fair Beer.

It was 1982. The World's Fair was coming to Knoxville. WBIR TV needed to find a way to broadcast live from the site. So they did what was cutting edge back then: they bought a bread truck. On July 28, 2008 the Sunsphere was both the site and the subject of a luncheon lecture by one of the architects who worked on creating the theme structure for the 1982 World's Fair. William Denton spoke about the challenges of constructing the world's first spherical building, and what he hoped Knoxville would do with it. Former mayor Randall Tyree spoke following Mr. Denton's remarks.
