Hikes in outdoor dining fees are hitting already struggling hospitality businesses hard according to their Association. Yesterday, Checkpoint spoke to a Queenstown business owner who says his outdoor dining tax has gone from just over $3000 a year to more than $50,000. Queenstown Lakes District Council is now charging "market rates" of 30 percent of indoor rent. But it said while there was public consultation on the policy it didn't include actual fees. It also disputes the figures provided by the hospitality venue, saying it had been undercharged for several years due to an inaccurate calculation of the floor area. Tauranga council is charging venues based on the size of the outdoor area, but yesterday voted to waive the charges for the rest of the year and is offering a rebate for part of next year to acknowledge tough trading conditions. Restaurant Association president Mike Egan spoke to Lisa Owen.
Tauranga City Council will wait until mid-2025 to expand charges for letting businesses offer al fresco dining. The fee per-square-metre of footpath use was meant to apply from July. Tauranga mayor Mahe Drysdale says delaying its introduction recognises the tough conditions for hospitality now. He says they're now rethinking how high the fee should be. "That's a conversation we need to have with the people that are on the ground and using the space." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On top of rental and rates, hospitality businesses also have to pay a charge for alfresco dining. Hospitality New Zealand argues it brings a vibrant buzz to inner cities, and businesses are paying for it. Recently Queenstown Lakes District Council outdoor seating charges are now 30% of the value of the indoor rent, meaning some businesses are paying tens of thousand of dollars. Blair Impey has two establishments with outdoor seating in Queentown spoke to Lisa Owen.

AP correspondent Julie Walker reports New York City's freewheeling era of outdoor dining has come to an end.
Two more restaurant companies have filed for bankruptcy. Cities continue to look for outdoor-dining solutions. And happy hour will remain illegal in Massachusetts, at least for now.
