Dallas-Fort Worth is among the most ozone-polluted metro areas in the U.S. That's according to new data from the American Lung Association. The 26th annual State of the Air report ranked D-FW as No. 10 out of 228 metropolitan areas for worst high ozone days — a setback from previous rankings. In other news, a man is in jail and facing murder charges after Dallas police connected two separate shootings by tying bullet casings, a cellphone number and a vehicle to both scenes, records show. 30-year old Garrett Hudgens is facing murder charges in connection with fatal shootings on April 4 in West Oak Cliff and April 23 near Fair Park; a novel experiment underway in West Texas could help determine whether long-abandoned nuclear technology could be the future of Texas power. At Abilene Christian University, a research lab is working to create the nation's first nuclear research reactor in more than 40 years; and the Dallas Stars needed a response, and it couldn't have come in more convincing fashion. Scoring just nine seconds into Game 5 at American Airlines Center, the Stars showed up from the start and took down the Colorado Avalanche 6-2 on Monday to take a 3-2 series lead. The Stars will have the chance to end the series Thursday night in Game 6 at Colorado. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

If you listened to the previous episode of EarBurner (and you should), you know that Bobby Abtahi was sitting at the table at the Old Monk as Matt and Tim interviewed Mike Rawlings. When they finished the episode with the former mayor, Abtahi, a former president of the Dallas Park Board, having consumed a statistically significant number of beers, started talking about how the city got into the current mess over the management of Fair Park—at which point Tim and Matt plugged the mics back in and recorded this episode. Abtahi was on the Park Board back in 2018, when it was decided that a nonprofit (Fair Park First) would oversee a new for-profit operator of Fair Park (Spectra, which eventually became the Oak View Group), which operator is now nearly $6 million in the red and asking for a handout. You know what? It's all very byzantine and boring, and we did a poor job of setting up on the podcast what's at stake and what happened. You should probably just skip this episode. Remember: print makes the podcast possible. Consider subscribing to D Magazine.
On this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the hosts kick things off by sharing their experience at the Texas State Fair. Held annually in Dallas at the historic Fair Park, the State Fair of Texas has been a beloved tradition since 1886, with only a few interruptions during World War I, World War II, and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fair typically runs from the last Friday in September for 24 days. Kyle then shares a story about his recent outing to the movies with his youngest son, Luke, to see the gruesome Terrifier 3. Next, they dive into some intriguing news stories. An outdoorsman and mushroom forager spots a small, bipedal humanoid wandering through the woods—something far from a typical forest animal. Then, they explore a chilling encounter in the mountains near Gatlinburg, TN, where a couple comes face-to-face with a human-sized creature that shapeshifts into a smaller entity. Later, two women driving near Hillsboro, Ohio, witness a strange, pitch-black quadruped with eerie white eyes emerging from the tall grass. After the break, a hiker in Wisconsin believes they may have encountered a "Glimmer Man" while walking on a park trail. Finally, a grandfather recounts a childhood memory of encountering several "ape-men" while panning for gold with his family near Elliot Lake, Ontario. All of this and more on this episode of Expanded Perspectives! An accountant's report on Fair Park's finances released Wednesday showed $5.7 million was misspent on projects that didn't meet stipulations set by donors. Fair Park First, the nonprofit that manages the Dallas park, said Wednesday it was looking to recoup the money. In other news, the parents of Cindy Clemishire, the Oklahoma woman who accused Gateway Church founder Robert Morris of abuse, gave their first public statement on their daughter's story in a letter to The Dallas Morning News. Clemishire told Christian blog The Wartburg Watch in June that Morris sexually abused her from the ages of 12 to 17; the Dallas County courthouse is likely to be without power to half of the building until at least Saturday. Also, those impacted by Hurricane Helen are still recovering, and a DFW audit shows that Fair Park leaders mislead donor funds.
An appeals court on Tuesday upheld a lower court's decision to reject Attorney General Ken Paxton's latest attempt to block the State Fair of Texas from banning most people from attending while carrying guns. The 15th District Court of Appeals ruling in Austin means the fair's new policy allowing only elected, appointed, or employed peace officers to bring firearms onto the fairgrounds is still in effect starting Friday, when the annual event begins in South Dallas' Fair Park; In other news, Dallas-based Invitation Homes has agreed to pay a proposed $48 million settlement after the company was accused of “unlawful actions against customers.” That's according to a Federal Trade Commission announcement Tuesday; many Dallas council members were concerned Monday when they learned tiny homes or sanctioned parking lots — places where people experiencing homelessness can stay temporarily— could add five months to the time providers spend rehoming people; and Dallas Trinity FC new head coach Pauline MacDonald is finally with the team after having visa issues. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Find season tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Frank and Becca James will emcee two food competitions in the Jacob Building at the Tennessee Valley Fair. They will host the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. and the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Last year, Frank met Ricky the Dragon Steamboat at the Donut Challenge. Frank's television interview with Ricky will air at 12:00 a.m. on August 28, 2024 on East Tennessee PBS. You can watch the interview online at https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-ricky-the-dragon-steamboat-qiz67j/ Marble City Opera had five performances in June. Frank's grandson Artie watched the dress rehearsal of Il Tabarro and both performances. The audience is left to wonder if Kathryn's character lives or dies at the end. She gave Frank a t-shirt with a list of “opera spoilers.” Kathryn and her husband James went to the Festival on the Fourth at World's Fair Park and met up with Frank, Jere, Artie, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD. James noticed a bad odor but was able to find its source. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra began their performance with the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and conductor Aram Demirjian invited the audience to sing along. Several people noticed Kathryn's high note. Frank and Jere took two of their grandchildren to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge for a “Wonderful Wednesday” presentation by the Tri-M Music Honor Society at Oak Ridge High School. Jere informed Frank that she had been Tri-M president at her high school. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Kathryn is reminded that author Elyse Bruce has inquired about including Marble City Opera in an upcoming Missy Barrett mystery book. Marble City Opera will present a free concert at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. as part of the Cathedral Concert Series. Reserve a free ticket at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cathedral-concert-marble-city-opera-tickets-993732870767 Kathryn, Jere, and Frank attended a recent Cathedral Concert that was the Album Release Performance of “Grit and Glitz” by violinist William Shaub and Friends. Kathryn and Jere bought CDs but neither of them have a CD player. Frank suggests trying to play them in a DVD player. Frank reminisces about playing records, tapes, and CDs at WAVA, where all the songs were sped up slightly to get the listeners hooked on the faster version. Frank and Jere took Artie to Mighty Musical Monday at the Tennessee Theatre. Frank misplaced his prescription sunglasses but eventually found them on top of a book titled Thinking Clearly by John-Mark Miravalle. A Waffle House waiter named Eric asked Frank to try Waffle House Sauce on his egg sandwich. When Frank liked it, Eric gave Frank extra packets to take home. Unfortunately Frank put the packets in his back pocket. For weeks leading up to Monday's total solar eclipse, North Texans were warned about the traffic on major highways with hundreds of thousands of people projected to descend on Dallas-Fort Worth. But those traffic jams never materialized as the moon moved past the sun and eclipse watchers went on about their days. Did people heed warnings from the Texas Department of Transportation? Did the severe weather in the forecast keep more people at home? Or was it a combination of things? To find out, Texas Wants to Know talked to KRLD's Alan Scaia, who was at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park for an eclipse event, and TxDOT spokesperson Tila Grant.

CJ interviews Dan about his current one-person show, "Pollinator / Not Pollinator (But mostly Bees)," at the Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park until April 28, and about the challenges of a solo show. Dan shares how he considered many different aspects when theming his show: The Texas Discovery Gardens location His attraction to drawing insects His environmental consciousness His poetry A bit of humor He explains how producing a solo show differs significantly from submitting to a group show. It forces you to focus on your message, quality, and intent. A solo show expresses a unique aspect of you; who are you? Environmental awareness is a strong message for Dan's show. Art has a responsibility to express the existential issues that we face today. You cannot find a place on the earth that doesn't have evidence of human beings. Dan's show features paintings of insects and animals, all represented in a square format. Dan chose to present each creature abstractly to make an environmental statement. Additionally, he wanted to challenge himself compositionally by working within the confines of a small square. This exhibition showcases Dan's unique artistic style and his commitment to environmental awareness. Dan uses writing and fine art separately as well as together. CJ and Dan discuss how he included poetry in his show and agree that artists don't have to "stay in our lane." We can mix different artistic disciplines. Dan Collins, the local Dallas artist and poet, has maintained an artistic practice his entire life, participating recently in group shows such as Fresh Faces 2 x 2 at the White Rock Bath House and community art events such as the White Rock Studio Tour. He is co-owner of Tree House Studio with his wife, Rebecca, where they offer classes and workshops. His poetry has been published in various print journals and online. He is a commercial printer by profession. Now that he is closing in on retirement, he is looking forward to devoting all his time to visual and literary creative pursuits. He has contributed to and participated in the local literary scene in various capacities for over a decade. As November 1963 began, President Kennedy had emergency meetings on Vietnam. He also received members of the US Industrial Payroll Savings Committee and had meetings on the goings on in Berlin. Meanwhile, The U.S. Secret Service concluded that the more secure and the larger of two locations for the President's upcoming fundraising luncheon in Dallas would be the "Women's Building" at Fair Park at the east side of downtown, rather than the Trade Mart on the west side near Dealey Plaza. Despite the recommendation, the state Democratic Party leaders in Texas settled on the Trade Mart. On November 6th, Jean Shepherd signed on from WOR talking about, and poking fun at, the 1964 World's Fair, slated to open the next April. Part of what made Shepherd so popular was that no one was safe from his scrutinizing eye, even himself, and his biting style was perfect for late night radio. Perhaps Shep was wrong. Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston twice, changing his name to Muhammad Ali in the process, while the cover of the next day's New York Daily News, Wednesday November 7th, told the story of a bartender from Connecticut who won nearly eighty thousand dollars, an all-time record twin double at Roosevelt Raceway. That same day, Nelson Rockefeller, the Governor of New York, announced on NBC's Today Show that he would be a candidate for the 1964 Republican Party nomination. U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, the front-runner, made no comment, but was expected to enter the race. President Kennedy was not expected to face opposition in his nomination as the Democratic Party candidate for 1964.

In 1966, when a still-young Dallas Cowboys franchise ended six years of NFL futility with its first winning season and a championship game appearance, the team's founder/owner Clint Murchison, Jr. was already dreaming bigger. In order to vault his club into the league's elite, Murchison knew he needed a better home situation than as a renter at the aging Cotton Bowl in Dallas' Fair Park - one where he could eventually generate his own direct revenue streams, while simultaneously elevating fans' game-day experience. Clint, Jr.s' s son Burk Murchison and Dallas Morning News writer Michael Granberry ("Hole in the Roof: The Dallas Cowboys, Clint Murchison Jr., and the Stadium That Changed American Sports Forever") join the podcast this week to help us delve into the history and mythology of Texas Stadium - the Cowboys' groundbreaking suburban Irving, TX home for 38 seasons (1971-2008) that not only fulfilled their owner's ahead-of-its-time vision, but also became the de facto template for modern-day sports facility expectations - for better or worse.
