This week's guest is Dr. Alex Scott, Associate Professor of SCM at UTK and co-founder of Sustainable Logistics. There is growing pressure on companies - both regulatory and socially - to reduce the emissions that they generate. One of the largest sources of CO2 emissions is freight transportation. Unfortunately, most companies outsource their transportation to carriers - so they do not have direct control over the asset being used. These types of emissions - where the company is responsible for it but does not have direct control over the asset - are referred to as scope 3. They are the hardest type of emissions to measure.  In our conversation, Alex describes how Scope 3 emissions are currently being measured today, discusses the regulatory trends in emissions monitoring, and explains the trade-offs between reporting accuracy and cost of collection. Through his research and now his company, Sustainable Logistics, Alex has developed a better approach that improves the accuracy of the measurement of Scope 3 emissions from truck transportation. This is an issue that is only going to become more critical for all transportation executives, so I encourage everyone to take a listen.

Je to kolosální ostuda. V konkurenci Portugalska, Turecka a Gruzie český národní tým skončil s jediným bodem poslední. Portugalci i Turci balon dokázali podržet, a tím si odpočinuli v mezihře. My musíme heroickým výkonem o balon zabojovat, a když ho zase ztratíme, bere to další síly.

What does it take to implement major new initiatives in our school systems? In Part Two of our episode about implementing initiatives such as Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) and Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK), we dive into this question with lots of hands-on, practical advice from a local school district perspective with Maria Ceballos, executive director of the early learning department at Fresno USD. Maria shares how her district, Fresno Unified, has been working to expand access to early learning for all children and families.   In Part One, we gained a statewide perspective about this historic moment for early education in California from Sarah Neville-Morgan, Deputy Superintendent at the California Department of Education. In this episode, Maria takes us inside some of Fresno USD's planning and approaches for expanding access to early education. Two keys, she says, were being concrete about the work and having the right people at the table. Maria says her district's leadership and all departments were clear on the value of early learning, and shared both a sense of urgency and a sense of opportunity for their community to  serve more children through high quality programs. Their efforts have included not only the early education team, but facilities, purchasing, finance, HR, teacher development, special education, local and county partners, the Fresno County Superinendent of Schools, and more. Maria also describes how building strong relationships enabled the district to pivot quickly when some things didn't go as planned or projected .Fresno's early learner support also has included a unique focus on dual language learner professional development for teachers. About Fresno USDFresno USD is the third largest district in the state with nearly 73,000 students, preK-12. Approximately 17.5% are English learners, and 85% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. The district includes 66 elementary schools, 14 middle schools, 10 high schools, alternative schools, and of course – early education programs. Two years ago, California's state budget agreement included an ambitious new initiative to fund and implement Universal Transitional Kindergarten (or UTK), so that all 4-year-olds in the state have access to it by 2025-26. It's part of a larger long-term goal the state and school districts have been working towards to expand early education and also provide access to Universal Pre-Kindergarten, or UPK, for all students. In this first of a two-part episode, Sarah Neville Morgan, Deputy Superintendent at the California Department of Education and longtime early education policy leader, describes this historic moment we're in when it comes to early education and fulfilling the promise of public education. Sarah discusses the why and how of UPK and UTK implementation, including work the state has been doing to support local efforts, resources, challenges, and implications and strategies for advancing equity. The  goal, she says, is for all children to hit kindergarten and first- third grades not just ready to learn, but ready to soar.Sarah and Jason also explore more generally how systems can approach planning for and implementing major new initiatives. Neyland Stadium will look a little different this year, though most new amenities were added for premium ticketholders. That doesn't mean the average fan won't benefit, and future renovations could make game days more comfortable for all.  As Tennessee football prepares for its home opener against Austin Peay on Sept. 9, co-hosts Ryan Wilusz and Brenna McDermott began thinking about additional amenities they would like to see. Listen as we talk about alcohol menus, relaxation zones and activities for fans without tickets.  "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com. Want more downtown analysis? Utkarsh, aka UTK the INC, comes in knowing the rules. He takes his shoes off, washes his hands, and shows off his new $15,000 card that he pulled, pack fresh, the day before (a 1/10 Prizms Gold Rookie Signatures Anthony Edwards that has since been BGS graded 9.5 gem mint). Utkarsh isn't just a solid guy and big time actor (Pitch Perfect, Free Guy, Mulan, The Mindy Project, The Muppets, Brockmire, Key & Peele, Brittany Runs a Marathon, and currently starring in CBS' #1 hit, Ghosts)... He's also a LEGIT free-style rapper who chops hard on the beat nearly (well, kinda' nearly) as hard as Rick bops hard in the paint. #GlassmanBoppers #IAmPhenomenal  Since 2005, Ambudkar has been a part of hip-hop improv group "Freestyle Love Supreme." On the pod, Utkarsh talks about how he originated the role of Aaron Burr in the developmental readings of "Hamilton," how his drinking may have gotten in the way of him continuing that role, but also how that experience changed his life for the better, allowing him to find his sobriety (currently at 8 years sober as of this recording).   You'll want to check out his music after you hear his bars in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3AXr1YNxrLplk3tRwOrLlN Support TYSO by supporting our sponsors: When you want to be a better problem solver, therapy can get you there.
