This week, Dave and Megan talk about FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH (2:47), Guy Ritchie's incredibly derivative and frustrating adventure film, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as siblings on a globe-trotting trek for (you guessed it) the mythical Fountain of Youth. Then, we all (Evan, Dave, and Megan) discuss FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN (29:21), a slasher horror film and the latest entry in the franchise based on the R.L. Stine novel. Directed by Matt Palmer and starring India Fowler, Suzanna Son, and Fina Strazza, it follows high school prom queen finalists dying one by one. One of us had a lot of fun, but two of us were disappointed. Yet we all agree on some of the good performances and the excellent 80s soundtrack. And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, we cover the winner of our sci-fi horror poll: James Ward Byrkit's 2013 film, COHERENCE!

#theidol #lilyrosedepp #theweeknd The Idol is an American drama television series created by Sam Levinson, Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim. The series focuses on an aspiring pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complex relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader Tedros (Tesfaye). Appearing in supporting roles are Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria. The series also marks the final television appearance of Anne Heche, who died on August 11, 2022. Development on the series began in June 2021 when Tesfaye announced that he would be creating, executive producing and co-writing a drama series for HBO alongside Fahim and Levinson. Joseph Epstein and Amy Seimetz were attached to serve as writer-showrunner and director, respectively. Seimetz's initial approach on the project was that of a troubled starlet falling victim to a predatory industry figure and fighting to reclaim her own agency. Depp was cast to play the female lead opposite Tesfaye in September 2021, with the remaining cast announced between November 2021 and July 2022. Much of series was filmed when Levinson took over directing duties after Seimetz exited the project amid its production delay and creative overhaul in April 2022. Levinson scrapped Seimetz's work and production resumed in May 2022 in a different direction. Principal photography occurred in Los Angeles and Bel Air. The Idol began airing on HBO and Max on June 4, 2023. Its first two episodes premiered in May 2023, at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with unfavorable reviews from critics for its sexual content, themes, script, and direction. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

It's movies-that-studios-are-pushing-for-awards week on Spoilerpiece! First up, Evan and Dave talk about Mike Mills' C'MON C'MON (1:48), a funny drama starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny, who steps in to take care of his nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) while Jesse's mother Viv (Gaby Hoffman) tends to her husband, Jesse's father, who has bipolar disorder. That's a clunky description, but don't hold that against us because it's a great conversation about a movie that's firmly plugged into its emotional arc. Next, everyone saw THE TENDER BAR (22:03), director George Clooney's latest, about JR (Daniel Ranieri as a kid and Tye Sheridan as a young adult), who moves with his mother (Lily Rabe) to her childhood home. Good news: Her brother, JR's Uncle Charlie, is Ben Affleck. The bad news? Not enough Ben Affleck. Lastly, we talk about RED ROCKET (39:15), director Sean Baker's latest. Mikey Saber (a terrific Simon Rex), a washed-up porn star, returns to his working class Texas hometown, crashing into his estranged wife's life, and striking up a creepy romance with a 17-year-old (Suzanna Son) whom he's trying to groom into a porn career that he hopes will restart his own. We continue our series going through the entire catalog of A24's films. On this episode we are looking at 2021's Red Rocket, directed by Sean Baker. He moves back in with his estranged wife and mother-in-law and gets back to his scheming ways. On this episode Matt & Eric review Sean Baker's Red Rocket starring Simon Rex, Bree Elrod and Suzanna Son.
Award-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, whose credits include THE FLORIDA PROJECT and TANGERINE, chats with Trey Elling about RED ROCKET. The dark comedy stars Simon Rex as an aging porn star who returns to his hometown and a cadre of people from his past, most of whom are leery of parasitic ways. Questions include: Why did he chose Texas City, TX as the film's locale? (01:32) How did he land on Simon Rex to play the lead? (03:05) What convinced Sean to cast Suzanna Son as 'Strawberry'? (04:28) Was it tough to get NSYNC to sign off on the film's usage of "Bye Bye Bye"? (06:06) Is there a specific film or director that influenced his abrupt audio cuts? (06:48) Why does he like telling stories through socioeconomically disadvantaged lives? (07:56) What's the key to telling a good story? (09:47) Was it a prosthetic? (12:38) Does he typically consider where his story is headed after the end credits roll? (12:57)
Letterboxd member and filmmaker Sean Baker talks Red Rocket, and his four current Letterboxd favorites Paradise: Faith; River's Edge; Oasis; and The Sugarland Express. "Red Rocket" premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at the Telluride and New York Film Festivals before opening in limited release this weekend. Writer/Director Sean Baker is following up his previous film, the acclaimed "The Florida Project," with an outrageous, vivid, and particular character study. With a career-best performance from Simon Rex, a powerhouse turn from Bree Elrod, and a star-making debut from Suzanna Son, the film has garnered similar acclaim from critics but has also drawn some controversy due to its lead character's perverted and warped mindset, the relationship he starts with an underage teenager and the film's sexual content. Sean, Bree, and Suzanna were all kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the film, how it's been received so far, what they're planning to do next, and more.
