Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the rest of the IMF crew are back for ONE last mission....to save the world from The Entity, a massive artificial intelligence collective which has spread so far it is now on the verge of taking over every major nuclear weapons arsenal. And the President (Angela Bassett) is running out of options as Ethan still has possession of ONE key item which our AI overlord still needs....a cruciform key. As this is a direct continuation of the previous Mission: Impossible sequel (Dead Reckoning) from a couple of years ago, most of that film's key cast returns including series stalwarts Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, along with Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, and Esai Morales as the villainous Gabrial. Also returning is director Oscar-winning writer/director Chris McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Jack Reacher) who has now helmed his fourth Mission:Impossible film in a row. Once again, the stunts gets crazier and The Cruise Missile seems to put his life on the line even more for the sake of pulling them off-screen - this leads to crazy action both underwater and up in the air! Send us a textFlashing back to episode #72 of Fabulous Film & Friends way back in 2023, we covered Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 and so we here on FFF felt duty bound to our fans to give our take on its follow up and what could very possibly be the final sequel to the entire M:I franchise, 2025's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Henry Czerny and Angela Bassett. Keeping continuity, my guests this week are returnees from the 2023 podcast, my blockbuster crew David Johnson, DMD and Burton Brown. Does anyone remember what happened in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1? Here's a callback to my synopsis from that podcast:Ethan Hunt and his team of Mission Impossiblers have to go rogue yet again to stop the world from yada yada yada. Same old crap megalomaniac with a weapon this time it's AI. Or something. Esai Morales is involved. I fell asleep twice so I didn't quite catch the relationship between the AI and Morales' Gabriel character. This movie seemed like more of the same old same old. But as a Tom Cruise running movie, it's a masterpiece, reaching an operatic Death in Venice level of running sophistication. So how does 2025's big follow up differ? This time Ethan Hunt and his rag tag team of crack superspies have to stop the AI Entity from blowing up the world as well as Gabriel from trying to harness its unbelievable power. Yet, instead of running extravaganza, we are treated to the biggest boldest, hands down, accept no substitutes granddaddy of all info dump and flashback movies. Is it the best, the worst or somewhere in the middle of the series?Find out! Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/dZfi-Cr8v20

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, "one last time."In this episode, Ashley, Matt and Aaron review the new (and final?) Mission: Impossible movie.
Here we are! Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt for his final(?) adventure with his IMF crew. Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise's latest team up - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - has now arrived in theaters, and is, of course, the second part of the Dead Reckoning saga of this franchise. As I've said before, Mission: Impossible is probably my favorite movie franchise of all-time. That answer has likely come about due to a number of my other favorite franchises diluting themselves over the last number of years, but Tom Cruise just knows how to deliver a kick-ass time at the movies. He's done so again, and again, and again, so consistently over the last decade, even outside the Mission franchise. That being said, Dead Reckoning was an interesting specimen. I loved it on first watch but that movie did not do very well at the box office, which was extra surprising considering it was riding the tremendous wave of Top Gun: Maverick's success the year prior. On successive rewatches, I myself have grown to have a number of issues with that movie but still find it to be an incredibly satisfying action movie. It's certainly still better than most other action movies you've seen in theaters since that film, largely because of Tom Cruise's endless dedication to risk his life... for our entertainment of all things. But, can Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning overcome the story shortcomings of its predecessor to close out Tom Cruise's run as Ethan Hunt with his most memorable ride yet? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review!Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning:Directed by: Christopher McQuarrieWritten by: Christopher McQuarrie & Erik JendresenBased on the television series created by: Bruce GellerProduced by: Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrieExecutive Producers: David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Chris BrockMusic by: Max Aruj, Alfie GodfreyCinematography by: Fraser TaggartEdited by: Eddie HamiltonCasting by: Mindy MarinProduction Design by: Gary FreemanCostume Design by: Jill TaylorCast: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell and Angela BassettSynopsis: Ethan Hunt and the IMF team continue their search for the terrifying AI known as the Entity — which has infiltrated intelligence networks all over the globe — with the world's governments and a mysterious ghost from Ethan's past on their trail. Joined by new allies and armed with the means to shut the Entity down for good, Hunt is in a race against time to prevent the world as we know it from changing forever.

Ritchie Valens and his flying podcast! - Phil takes 1987's La Bamba off the shelf this week as he remember the day the music died for the second time. Phil is so captivated by the performance of Esai Morales as Bob that it threatens to take the attention away from Lou Diamond Phillips. That being said, the movie is successful in taking a different approach to similar material as the 1979's The Buddy Holly Story (available in the archives) Dave found it challenging to get into the story overall as the characters were too thinly drawn to be understood without knowing the story previous. The performances and structure of the movie start to be a little melodramatic by the end. Phil, of course, is moved to tears.

Tread Perilously's Cornucopia of Sci-Fi concludes with a Caprica episode called "False Labor." After each of the main characters has troubled dreams, Joseph Adama awakes to another day of work while his brother, Sam, plots to send guns to Tauron. Daniel Greystone continues to develop Resurrection technology and perfect a simulacrum of his wife, Amanda. She, meanwhile, works to embed herself among the monotheists, even if one one of their number doubts her intentions. Trouble continues to brew behind the scenes at Greystone's business. The mob gets ever closer, and a prototype Cylon Centurion makes a startling contribution to the day's events. Erik and Justin can't help but examine Caprica through the eyes of jaded former Battlestar Galactica fans. Ronald D. Moore ends up in the hot seat even though he had little to do with Caprica. The duo split on star Paula Malcomson's performance. Esai Morales easily wins their hearts, though. Erik sees why Eric Stoltz was fired from Back to the Future. Despite not appearing in the episode, Caprica marketing star Alessandra Torresani merits discussion. Episode director John Dahl leads to a chat abput Rounders and the career of Gretchen Mol. The major Cylon problem infects Caprica and Erik gives The 4400's Billy Campbell some credit.

A lot's changed since 1987: Biopics are much more common (and darker). Chicano artists are more mainstream, and Lou Diamond Phillips is a household name. So we acknowledge "La Bamba' was groundbreaking ... and not very good. Listener Mark C. commissioned this episode and the upcoming "American Me" to celebrate his heritage as a first-generation Hispanic-American. He noted the blockbuster soundtrack, janky lip-syncing and performances from Esai Morales, Joe Pantaliano and Elizabeth Pena. But Mark didn't prepare us for laughably large talismans, breakneck pacing and Ritchie Valens' "golly-gee" persona. In this episode, the Shat Crew debates whether Ritchie's brother, Bob, got a fair shake in the movie, what really happened that night in Tijuana and how much racism is appropriate for this story. Gene spots a Mystical Mexican. Ash yearns for some Buddy Holly, and Dick wants more details about the plane crash and aftermath. On this show, our specialty is sequels, sequels, and more sequels. From the good ones, to the bad ones, to the really ugly ones, we'll be covering them all! We've got homicidal maniacs that won't stay in the grave, sci-fi epics whose stories cannot be told in a single tale, and much much more. For our 25th episode, we are talking about one of the strangest sequels/remakes/requels in history with "DEADLOCK 2" from 1995, (AKA Wedlock 2, AKA Deadlocked: Escape From Zone 14). This sequel to the original Wedlock from 1991 starring Rutger Hauer (that we already reviewed for Rutger Hauer Appreciation Month) is cleverly disguised as a sequel...but it's a reamke, or is it a requel? We'll leave it up to you to decide how the hell this got made in the first place. This straight to cable mischief stars Esai Morales, Nia Peeples, and Stephen McHattie. In short, it's about a thief framed for a crime he did not commit and is then sent to a futuristic prison with a bomb strapped around his neck. Sound crazy...because it is. Join our hosts Cameron Scott and Marcus Koch as they dissect and take a deep dive into a future that only belongs to those who can survive it. "Well, it's a six digit code. That means there's about ten million possible combinations."
On this final week of 2023 we're going run and run and run with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in 2023's Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part 1, one might even say Dead Reckoning Part Run directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Mr. Cruise, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes, Esai Morales Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan, and Henry Czerny. My two guests are my right hand men on The Blockbuster Crew: Utah's own David Johnson, DMD and Burton Brown, State of Utah IT. Before the mad dash to our opinion of this movie, the synopsis: Ethan Hunt and his team of Mission Impossiblers have to go rogue yet again to stop the world from yada yada yada. But me go further: This is the biggest offender in “The Each Sequel Feels Like the Exact Same Thing Every Time --Except More of It” category. In fact the whole series is the worst, far worse than James Bond. Followed by: Bourne IdentityX-MenRecent Planet of the Apes movies andHarry Potter Am I right? On your mark! Get Set!Run!
Junk Food Dinner returns for our November episode (definitely not our Halloween episode) where we discuss British vampires, Japanese dinosaurs and Chicago juvenile delinquents! Up first, Christopher Lee is Count Dracula and he returns from his slumber in swinging 1972 London and it's up to Peter Cushing and his granddaughter (both descendants of Van Helsing) to stop him in Hammer horror film Dracula A.D. 1972. Then, Toei Pictures brings us a tale of prehistoric creatures returning to swinging 70's Japan and causing mayhem to an inexplicable funk soundtrack in Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds from 1977. And finally, Sean Penn plays a Chicago street thug who gets put in the toughest juvenile prison in the country after a drug deal goes bad and leaves multiple people dead. There he has to defend himself from other prisoners like the menacing Clancy Brown. But when a rival gang member, played by Esai Morales, shows up at the prison, things really get heated in Bad Boys from 1983. All this plus heated discussions on how long after Halloween it's appropriate to celebrate, why Gen Z isn't into rude titties on film, the new Salem's Lot, Godzilla on Apple TV, hot blu-rays and so much more! Hosts Kenny and Mike discuss and spot faith reflected in the lastest Mission Impossible film, Dead Reckoning. Starring Tom Cruise and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his IMF team must track down a device that threatens political and civil stability throughout the world. Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg reprise their rolls as IMF members Luther Stickell and Benji Dunn. Henry Czerny also reprises his roll as Agent Eugene Kittridge from the original MI as well as Michelle Monaghan reprises her roll as Julia Meade. Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, and Hayley Atwell also co-star. Faith Issues Spotted: Forgiveness and Peace: The importance of dealing productively with pain, loss, anger and guilt, rather than ignoring or burying those feelings and experiences. As depicted in the film, Ethan's failure to process his grief, anger, and guilt surrounding losses of persons close to him earlier in his life and career have had a negative impact on him. In the course of the film he is made more vulernable through his carrying that pain and desire for revenge. Carrying and allowing anger, guilt and other emotions to build up can make one susceptible to damaging one's health, career and relationships. Christian faith, and the promise and hope of redemption and new life can assist in working through such pain, anger, and guilt. In Romans 8 Paul teaches that current suffering and trials cannot compare to the goodness of the life to come in God's Kingdom, that God works for Good in all things, and that nothing can separate one from the love of God in Christ. God's love and peace can help persons move through pain and struggle including the power to seek to offer forgiveness instead of resentment or revenge. Jesus and Paul also calls for followers to love and forgive others rather than live with anger and resentment. Matthew 5 & 22, Romans 12 Living out of Faith Rather Than Fear: Related to this is not living and acting from a place of fear, especially in the midst of changing times and circumstances beyond one's control. Acting from and through fear leads to behavior that accepts negative means to be justified by perceived "good ends." Faith in God, who is a God of love who works for our good, even in the midst of struggle, helps one live in a place of faith and peace. Temptation to Use Gifts and Power for Good: The tempation to exploit gifts and power in negative ways rather than use them for good. Technology has emense power that can be used for the benefit of an individual or society, or be exploited an used for harm. In the film a technology that could be used for great good in society is in danger of being used to cause great harm and bring power to an individual or group / nation. The pursuit of the technology becomes desperate with the nations and groups willing to do anything to secure it for their own use. This theme was also reflected in the film Oppenheimer. Technology can be used in less dramatic but still damaging ways. The internet is a tool that can be used to lear and develop or hurt other or even waste time and opportunity for personal growth and development. As persons of faith, Christ calls followers to pursue rigtheousness and the good including love for others, including one's enemies.

This podcast was recorded during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn't exist. Does the seventh Mission: Impossible movie fall off a cliff? That's right, we're reviewing the good, bad, and Tom Cruise of it all in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. A movie with as many stunts as it has words in the title. Starting off, we give our takes on how Dead Reckoning Part One, officially one of the most expensive movies ever made, compares to previous installments. Additionally, we play the Rotten Tomatoes game and react to a few popular reviews of the movie on Letterboxd. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also co-wrote the film with Erik Jendresen. The film stars Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Henry Czerny. It opened nationwide on July 12 through Paramount Pictures and has a 163-minute runtime. Our intro music this week is “Jazz is Good” by Weiter & TheMusicalcurrent.
