The sad announcement of Joe Biden's advanced cancer diagnosis has thrown fuel onto recriminations and speculations about his condition during his presidency, especially with the publication of a new book on the subject by none other than Jake Tapper. Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, on a Sunday interview with Fox Business's Maria Bartiromo, disavowed the conspiracy theories surrounding the death of notorious sex trafficker Joseph Epstein, spurring an outcry from some of the theorists. Also this week, Trump pushed forward a Big, Beautiful Bill (literally) aimed at stimulating the economy. But will it be sufficient to quell fears of eventual national debt and social security crises? This week, the guys discuss corruption, economics, and much more! Plus: media recommendations.

Joseph Eptstein is back on the podcast to discuss recent events in the Middle East. As listeners of my podcast and readers of my newsletter know, Syria has undergone a seismic change in the last month with the collapse of the Assad regime, and the emergence of a new government composed of elements of a Turkey-backed rebel coalition. Where do we go from here? Joseph and I unpack this question as we explore the events that led up to Assad's ouster, the groups and people now seeking to build a better Syria, and the broader regional and global implications of one of 2024's biggest black swan events. Joseph Epstein is back on the show to give us an update on the regional conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. While Hamas remains the main target of Israeli operations in Gaza, the conflict with Iran is increasingly coming to the forefront, which is raising fears of a broader war. We discuss how the July assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Syria and Iran is shaping Iran's strategic calculus, and explore why, despite the high profile nature of Ismail Haniyeh's assassination in Tehran, Iran has yet to strike back at Israel as of this recording. Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life Podcast

In this episode, I'll be reading a brief excerpt from my new biography, Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor, which is available as an audiobook as well as in hardback and ebook formats. The book was chosen as an editor's pick by Barnes and Noble and currently has 4.7 stars on Amazon. You can hear a sample from the studio-recorded audiobook, and read reviews, on Audible. Also see Goodreads for reviews.* “Given the erratic, not to say murderous, behavior of many of [Marcus's] predecessors, . . . how did so sterling a character as Marcus come about? That is the subject of Donald J. Robertson's excellent biographical study.”—Joseph Epstein, National Review* “Addictively written, this riveting visitation of the fascinating figure of Marcus Aurelius is as comprehensive as it gets, covering everything from his reign to his philosophy.”—“Notes from Your Bookseller,” barnesandnoble.com* “Eminently readable. . . . A leading light in the modern revival of Stoic philosophy, Robertson directly and elegantly draws out the connections between Marcus' experiences in the unforgiving crucible of Roman imperial politics and the philosophical ideas he expresses in the Meditations. . . . An invaluable companion to the Meditations itself.”—Peter Juul, Liberal Patriot* “Few historical figures are as fascinating as Marcus Aurelius, the emperor-philosopher. And few writers have been so effective at bringing his complex life and character to the attention of modern readers as Donald Robertson.”—Massimo Pigliucci, author of How to Be a Stoic: Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life* “[Robertson] thoughtfully and readably capture[s] the essence of this great man and his great life. It's a must read for any aspiring Stoic.”—Ryan Holiday, coauthor of #1 New York Times bestseller The Daily Stoic* “Robertson has written a very thorough and very readable account of Marcus's life and the events and people that shaped him. Anyone who wants to understand the author of Meditations should read this book.”—Robin Waterfield, author of Marcus Aurelius, Meditations: The Annotated Edition* “Donald Robertson guides us into the world of a philosopher-emperor whose humility and Stoic teachings fill the pages. We are indebted to Robertson for this wonderful account of the emperor who penned notes to himself while in battle that would be later known as the Meditations and read by millions for philosophical inspiration. Simply spellbinding.”—Nancy Sherman, author of Stoic Wisdom: Ancient Lessons for Modern Resilience* “Robertson's biography provides a compelling narrative of Marcus' life, carefully based on the primary sources. He brings out very clearly the life-long significance of Stoicism for Marcus and the interplay between philosophy, politics, and warfare.”—Christopher Gill, author of Learning to Live Naturally: Stoic Ethics and Its Modern Significance* “This highly readable biography is the perfect place to begin for anyone who wants to learn more about the man behind the Meditations.”—John Sellars, author of The Pocket StoicStoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life is a reader-supported publication. When you hear people talk about World War III do you typically envision nuclear armed superpowers slinging nukes at hordes of robot soldiers until human civilization is blasted into a post-apocalyptic desert? Or maybe you imagine something akin to the last World War with millions of soldiers fighting on every continent and in every domain. My guest today argues that in reality, World War III may have already started and it's not what we typically imagine.  Joseph Epstein is the Legislative Analyst at the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET), a Washington DC think tank, and is an expert on foreign policy, terrorism, and the Middle East. In a fascinating discussion that starts with the war in Gaza, we broaden the scope to consider one of Epstein's many articles exploring the possibility that World War III has already begun, and we discuss its different dimensions and implications for US policy. Rather than an all-consuming conflict, Epstein argues that this current “World War” is being fought in the “gray zone” - a domain just below the threshold of declared war where countries seek to preserve plausible deniability and avoid direct conflict while still inflicting harm on their adversary. Think America “fighting” Russia by arming Ukraine, or Iran “fighting” Israel through its region-wide network of terror proxies. Gray zone tactics also emerge in the information domain in the form of propaganda and information warfare, and in economics via sanctions and heightened trade barriers.  Just a reminder Get a weekly dose of analysis on world events by signing up for my Substack newsletter.  Subscribe to Tim Talks Politics  on Substack today and get 30% off for being a loyal listener! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/timtalkspolitics/support

Alan Weiss' The Uncomfortable Truth

The best leaders and most successful people I've met also exemplify generosity. This is not an accident. “Generosity” means “giving or sharing,” and being liberal in so doing. It isn't primarily about money, but it is about credit, recognition, time, listening, coaching, supporting, and so forth. If it's authentic, then it's consistent, not situational. I've always thought the award winners who get on stage and thank 20 people are many times those whom the people being thanked have thought of as horrible, selfish people with whom to work. Generosity is often about hard work and sacrifice, not merely “giving.” Writing a check is easy, serving at a soup kitchen is harder, chairing a nonprofit board that's in trouble is harder still. Caitlin Clark led basketball statistics in scoring, but she was also very highly rated in assists. Mentioning someone laudably in public (and on social media) is generous, as is not mentioning negatives. Refraining from complaining, especially over minor issues is generous. We often call it “giving the benefit of the doubt.” Developing people is generous. Maya Angelou has noted that “we train animals, but we should educate people.” We shouldn't assume people are somehow “damaged” and require remedial work (which most self-help books do). We shouldn't project our personal shortcomings to others, as if they must be universal to salve our egos (this is called “projecting”). Being vulnerable and honest is generous. To admit our mistakes and fears to others is a generous act, encouraging them to feel safe doing so, and enabling them to try to help us and that we will willingly listen. We should also overlook minor flaws that may discomfort us but are trivial in the large scheme of things. I had a coaching client who told me he was annoyed when one of his customers chewed on the ice from a drink. I asked if this were somehow dysfunctional. He said it was just irksome. I suggested he just live with it and forget it. But, ungenerously, he told the client that the habit was irritating. The customer then told him to “get lost.” Refraining from holding a grudge or harboring resentment is generous, as is never taking things personally. (I didn't make a sale at this time in this place to this person. That doesn't mean the person doesn't like me or that I'm not worthy.) And remember Joseph Epstein's famous observation: “The true measure of generosity is not how much one gives but how much, after giving, one has left over.” It's a fundamental concept or philosophy about life.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 25, 2024 is: tendentious • ten-DEN-shus • adjective Tendentious is a formal word used disapprovingly to describe someone or something expressing a strongly biased point of view in a way that may cause argument. // The book proved to be a tendentious account of the town's history, written to rescue the reputation of one of its less scrupulous founders. See the entry > Examples: “Polls can have their own politics, and media polls are often accused of being tendentious.” — Joseph Epstein, The Wall Street Journal, 26 Oct. 2021 Did you know? Tendentious is one of several words English speakers can choose when they want to suggest that someone has made up their mind in advance. You may be partial to predisposed or prone to favor partisan, but whatever your leanings, we're inclined to think you'll benefit from adding tendentious to your repertoire. Tendentious is a relatively recent arrival to English, considering its Latin roots. In the latter half of the 19th century, English users took the Latinate stem tendenti- (from tendentia, meaning “tendency”) and combined it with the familiar adjective suffix -ious to form a word describing someone with a tendency to favor a particular point of view, motivated by an intent to promote a particular cause.

Geographically, Central Asia is located a comfortable distance away from the wars in the Caucasus, Ukraine, and the Middle East, but these conflicts affect Central Asia's governments, as well as the region's people. For different reasons, the fighting in those three areas is causing rifts and bringing new challenges. How are the region's governments reacting to the conflicts? How do Central Asia's residents feel about the wars -- and their leaders' responses to them? Which combatants can Central Asians openly support, and how? Joining host Bruce Pannier to look at these questions are Joseph Epstein, a legislative fellow at the Endowment for Middle East Truth who focuses on the post-Soviet Space and the Middle East; Mukhtar Senggirbay, managing editor at RFE/RL's Kazakh Service, known locally as Azattyq; and Salimjon Aioubov, director of RFERL's Tajik Service, known locally as Ozodi. The series focuses on an aspiring pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp) and her complex relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader Tedros (Tesfaye). Appearing in supporting roles are Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria. The series also marks the final television appearance of Anne Heche, who died on August 11, 2022. Development on the series began in June 2021 when Tesfaye announced that he would be creating, executive producing and co-writing a drama series for HBO alongside Fahim and Levinson. Joseph Epstein and Amy Seimetz were attached to serve as writer-showrunner and director, respectively. Seimetz's initial approach on the project was that of a troubled starlet falling victim to a predatory industry figure and fighting to reclaim her own agency. Depp was cast to play the female lead opposite Tesfaye in September 2021, with the remaining cast announced between November 2021 and July 2022. Much of series was filmed when Levinson took over directing duties after Seimetz exited the project amid its production delay and creative overhaul in April 2022. Levinson scrapped Seimetz's work and production resumed in May 2022 in a different direction. Principal photography occurred in Los Angeles and Bel Air. The Idol began airing on HBO and Max on June 4, 2023. The unlimited choices we face in modernity make us restless, which is why Dr. Benjamin and Dr. Jenna Storey wrote Why We Are Restless: On the Modern Quest for Contentment. Yuppie is a slang term denoting the market segment of young urban professionals. A yuppie is often characterized by youth, affluence, and business success. They are often preppy in appearance and like to show off their success by their style and possessions. The term yuppie originated in the 1980s and is used to refer to young urban professionals who are successful in business and considerably affluent. Some credit writer Joseph Epstein with using the term while others point to journalist Dan Rottenberg's Chicago magazine article. It is difficult to identify modern yuppies because modern society has doled out wealth to various groups of people rather than a specific set of people with similar characteristics.Yuppies tend to be educated with high-paying jobs, and they live in or near large cities. Some typical industries associated with yuppies include finance, tech, academia, and many areas in the arts, especially those associated with liberal thinking and style.

Joseph Epstein is the best essayist alive. He's urbane, funny, self-deprecating. He's a fine stylist, and he's remarkably well-read.I remember William F. Buckley marveling at Epstein's erudition and wondering how Epstein could have so many anecdotes and references at his disposal. Coming from a guy of Buckley's learning, that's high praise. So it was with great interest that I turned to his essay, “Joseph Epstein's Lifetime Reading Plan” (found in this book) and his attempt to respond to a recent college graduate's question: “What books should I read?” This question, Epstein said, was nothing less than asking, “How do I become an educated person?”Epstein used the question to launch his essay, but he didn't provide a list of books. He suggested that a person always have a classic going: Cervantes, Tocqueville, Montaigne, Homer, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Plato. That's thumpingly good advice, especially for someone like Epstein (and me), who always has two or more books going at once. It keeps one's reading life varied. But what about a list? Epstein said there is no dispositive list, and he's right. The canon of Western civilization alone is neither settled nor static, there isn't enough time to read everything in one lifetime, and everyone's situation is different. One list won't fit all.Still, I think a list is possible.Mine is below.

People take offense way too often and easily. The outrage generating machines of social media are designed to keep people offended 24-7, and it is working. Joseph Epstein published an Op-Ed in the WSJ, on whether or not incoming first lady Jill Biden should, or should not, call herself “Dr.” A heated debate ensued about MD, Ph.D., EdD, JD and the merit or lack of merit of each credential and the hard work or little work required to obtain said degree. Hashtags were flying, name-calling and labeling were thrown around everywhere. I have taught in colleges for years, earned a doctorate almost 20 years ago, Mr. Epstein can think what he wants, I do not care. Jill Biden can call herself “First Lady or Dr. Jill Biden,” I equally do not care. Neither should you. It simply doesn't matter all that much. The media machine set the table with a deliciously controversial article sure to get people to bite hard and they did. Many were "offended" and needed to "stand up" for "the cause." There are characteristics in human nature that lead us down a road to being offended. This podcast will discuss how to do a better job of avoiding the rage and wasting time being offended.   #drjillbiden #politics #offended #wsj #podcast

I hate to admit it, but I love a good Twitter scandal. Blue checkmarks, a not-so-special but very self-important group of which I am a part, erupts with outrage at least once a week and I absolutely adore it. If I am also outraged, even better — and if not, I at least get a moment of feeling like I’m above it all. Last weekend’s Twitter drama didn’t just outrage me, however; it made me reevaluate my own choices. It made me think a lot about why I haven’t been using my own PhD title — and the signal that sends to other women in academia. In case you missed it, Joseph Epstein, a former Northwestern University teacher who has previously written homophobic commentary, wrote a highly offensive and misogynistic op-ed in the Wall Street Journal wherein he criticized incoming First Lady Jill Biden for referring to herself as Dr. Jill Biden. You might be thinking, huh? She has a doctorate in education. Why shouldn’t she use the title one receives when they attain that degree? The author’s rationale was along the lines of, “I taught at a good university for 30 years with only a college degree and it’s embarrassing for anyone who isn’t a medical doctor to use the term Dr.” He also referred to Dr. Biden as “kiddo,” a patronizing and insulting sentiment at best. In response, folks on Twitter started adding Dr. to their names in a show of solidarity with Dr. Biden. A number of thoughtful threads surfaced explaining why this type of mansplaining is so harmful, and I was pleased to see smart pieces diving into the underlying sexism of the editorial. Even Northwestern University, where Epstein once taught, chimed in with a statement condemning his “misogynistic views” as well as “the diminishment of anyone's duly-earned degrees in any field, from any university.” The ensuing discussion around the realities of academia and how much work it takes to get a PhD was very welcome, too. My PhD is in political science from the London School of Economics. Not too shabby, right? And although the physical manifestation of my degree is now a bound copy of my dissertation and the diploma itself, which lives at my parents’ apartment, the memories of the process came flooding back as I read Epstein’s op-ed. I remembered falling asleep in the library on a regular basis, the painstaking work of building a dataset of thousands individual politicians, and learning how to use statistical software programs from scratch. But I took a different path from many PhD holders. I left academia as soon as I defended my dissertation and haven’t looked back. With a career in research and media, I thought it might make me look like a bit of a Doogie Howser — without the MD — if I ran around calling myself Dr. Jessica Tarlov or Jessica Tarlov, PhD. No one likes a know-it-all, and as society makes strides to elevate women and BIPOC, I am acutely aware of how hard it is for white men to relinquish power generally, let alone to a young woman with a PhD. The attack on Jill Biden, however, made me reconsider my choice. Not because I need some extra reason to feel good about myself — I have a pretty healthy ego, as my boyfriend will attest. It made me rethink my decision because we are living in an age when representation matters, and we know it’s a huge boon for young people to see folks who look like them, and have achieved big things, wear their accomplishments proudly. Undertaking a PhD is daunting. Ideas that are worth four years of research don’t come around every day, and when they do, the work is hard. And the bill is steep. All this is to say: Congratulations to Dr. Biden on her accomplishment. Congratulations to me, too! And I’m hopeful for more Twitter drama like this. It’s to the benefit of the conversation — and to my own thinking.

We've touched on this before in our segments on free speech and libertarianism, and also when we discussed the film The Social Dilemma. But we've reached yet another milestone in reality distortion, with Trump's post-election autocoup attempt, and the full complicity of the Republican party. So we're going to really drill down into the damage caused by this lurch in the past two decades toward the elevation of opinion over facts and expertise. This phenomenon parallels the rise of social media, but isn't entirely defined or caused by it. The Opinion Card is a broader interpersonal dynamic, one that's also been co-opted by our political system and even by algorithms. Opinions have become weapons of mass destruction. The way people are choosing to use their freedom of conscience to either employ or fight back against these weapons of mass destruction, and the systemic impact of those collective decisions, is changing our world as never before. But lucky for him, Dr. Jill Biden was there, and she is a doctor. "We need a doctor here!" cried a waiter. "Is there a doctor in the house?"Dr. Jill Biden sprang into action. "I'm a doctor!" she said, rushing over. "I'm going to need a podium and a microphone, stat!" After a busboy hurried over with the life-saving tools she would need, Dr. Jill Biden thanked him and then began delivering a speech on meeting students' needs at the community college level. An op-ed in the Wall Street Journal by Joseph Epstein sparked a debate over calling Jill Biden a “doctor” since she is not a medical doctor but has a doctorate in education. "Madame First Lady — Mrs. Biden — Jill — kiddo," the piece begins. "Any chance you might drop the 'Dr.' before your name? 'Dr. Jill Biden' sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic." Epstein went on to argue that the prestige of doctorates and honorary degrees has been diminished by political correctness and the relaxation of academic standards before urging Biden to "forget the small thrill of being Dr. Jill, and settle for the larger thrill of living for the next four years in the best public housing in the world as First Lady Jill Biden." Conservative pundits pointed to the episode as an example of what they say is a quickness on the part of the political left to be offended.  "I'm sorry. Telling a white lady in her late 60s that she should stop calling herself doctor because she is not an actual medical doctor, that is not sexist. It's not," commentator Ben Shapiro Hillary Clinton tweeted: Her name is Dr. Jill Biden. Get used to it. Lots of politicos on Twitter were changing their bio and hilarity ensued.

A Labour MP has criticised a "silly" Wall Street Journal opinion piece telling incoming US First Lady Jill Biden to stop using 'Doctor' at the start of her name. In the op-ed published over the weekend, author Joseph Epstein argued Jill Biden should drop the honorific because she is not a medical doctor but rather earned a doctorate in education. Epstein wrote that her use of the title "feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic."The op-ed drew ire on Twitter from Biden staffers, supporters, those with doctorates and journalists including at least one from the Wall Street Journal.Biden holds two Master's degrees and a Doctorate in Education.Dr Deborah Russell told Heather du Plessis-Allan that those who have a PhD are entitled to use the honorific. "There is a time and a place for it. I would never use Doctor in the context of getting my bills paid or something like that." She says that in Parliament, a medical doctor or someone with a doctorate is entitled to use the title. Russell says that most people understand the difference between a medical doctor and a doctorate.LISTEN ABOVE

I recently found myself being jealous of my cousin.. I was jealous of their situation and angry with myself. Not them. But I know nothing of how long they’ll be semi-retired. I know nothing of their expected lifestyle. I don’t know if they’ve inherited money. I don’t know anything. .......... Joseph Epstein put it perfectly, "Of the 7 deadly sins, only envy is no fun at all". .......... Being jealous of one activity should not extrapolate to a whole person. Sure she may wish she could travel like I do, but, does she really want to be me? She has no reason to be jealous of all of me, and nor should I of her. And we are the closest of relatives. We really understand each other. We are super close. So how misguided would be my jealousy of a mere acquaintance or a stranger? I need to keep training my mind to recognise these emotions. Then I can deal with them. In this re:joinder episode, producers and co-hosts Alex and Calvin are re-joined by contributor and co-producer Sophie to roast two op-eds that criticize proposed plans to lower the price of college tuition and eliminate student loan debt.In the first article, Who Will Take a Paycut for Free College, published in the august and impartial Wallstreet Journal, author Joseph Epstein argues that we while the promise of free college might sound appealing, when it comes to higher education, “you get what you pay for.” Taking for granted that tuition funding would need to come out of the budgets of higher education institutions themselves, Epstein suggests that universities might do well to eliminate courses in ‘victimology,' pay professors by the hour, and turn over profits from university sports programs to the federal government to foot the bill of free college for all. Parsing the many cynical assumptions that underpin this argument, Alex, Calvin, and Sophie note that Epstein has handily overlooked the fact that the costs of these proposals would be shouldered by taxes on the wealthy and on Wall Street transactions (a plan that many economists have determined would be sound fiscal policy). Our co-hosts push back on Epstein's attempt to coerce his audience into believing that free higher education would be bad through a series of “hypotheticals” about what this kind of change would require, and criticize the author's failure to try and understand the price of attending a modern university. In the second article, published in Human Events, Mary Claire Amselem argues “no. Period. Your student loan debt should not be forgiven. Period.” Amselem invokes the grim specters of senators Sanders and Warren to blast the notion that we could forgive student loan debt and provide free university education. In a flurry of nominalizations, the author concedes that student loan debt is undesirable and burdensome, but nevertheless maintains that loan forgiveness would create more problems than it solves. Citing imaginary consensus that eliminating student loan debt would be bad policy because it would promote fiscal irresponsibility, Anselem makes the bogus claim that student loan debt is only incurred by those too irresponsible to manage their finances and make smart decisions, and that student loan forgiveness plans would burden the American taxpayer. Our hosts point out that Anselem's argument relies not only on stark a lack of data about the cost of higher education, but also on the false dichotomies she draws in order to pit the middle class against itself (namely, students vs. taxpayers, and low-wage earners vs. the college educated). Though Amselem would have us believe that low earners will be forced to subsidize other people's debt under these plans, our hosts once again point out that in fact, the funding for these programs would come from progressive taxation on the wealthy and targeted taxing of Wall Street speculation. Like Epstein, Amselem invokes cynical rhetoric to encourage her readers to see the enemy next them rather than the enemy up above, in an effort to manipulate the audience into seeing things her way.We round out the episode pointing out that both authors arguments are based not on factual support, but instead on cruel assumptions and an unwillingness to examine the facts and data about the cost of education today, as well as the economic forces that have brought about the student loan crisis in the first place. Both authors seem to overlook the structural inequalities that have worked to create the well-educated but low earning college graduates lambasted in the articles. We conclude that both athour's arguments attempt to confirm people's worst suspicions about higher education, and we question the material interests working behind the scenes at both publications that are invested in promoting these cynical perspectives.Works and Concepts Cited in this EpisodeAmselem, M. This week's show starts with a discussion of the 'national security' tariffs President Trump announced he planned to impose on steel and aluminum. Mike and Jay are in agreement that the tariffs are a terrible idea and not at all related to national security. Jay points out that this is an issue where President Trump is getting more support from Democrats from his fellow Republicans, who were generally upset and dismayed at the announcement. The president further disturbed many in his own party this week by suggesting he was in favor of tougher gun laws than most Congressional Republican are likely to support. Mike makes the point that we've seen the president make similar statements on other issues - immigration most notably - and then fall back into GOP orthodoxy in the end. The Guys also look at a variety of other gun policy related developments that took place over the last week. Next is a discussion of Russian president Vladimir Putin's bellicose speech about the U.S. threat to global security and new weapons systems Russia has developed to thwart U.S. missile defenses. This comes shortly after NSA and U.S. Cyber Command chief Mike Rogers told the Senate Intelligence Committee that we're not doing enough to prevent Russian cyberattacks on our election systems. Finally, it's a look at what seems to be a West Wing in disarray, following the departure of Hope Hicks as communications director. Mike and Jay agree that the extremely high level of turnover - especially in the communications area - is yet another indication that Donald Trump is an impulsive person who hates being managed and bridles at the necessity of message discipline. **What Jay's Reading :** [The Only Good Thing About Donald Trump Is All His Policies](http://on.wsj.com/2oFHUGD).
