Over the past several years, true crime's hold on the culture has tightened into a vice grip, with new titles flooding podcast charts and streaming platforms on a daily basis. This week on Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz take stock of the phenomenon, first by speaking with fans of the genre to understand its appeal. Then, onstage at the 2024 Cascade PBS Ideas Festival, they continue the discussion with The New Yorker's Patrick Radden Keefe, whose books “Empire of Pain” and “Say Nothing” are exemplars of the form. The panel considers Keefe's recent piece, “The Oligarch's Son,” which illuminates the journalistic challenges of reporting on sordid events—not least the difficulty of managing the emotions and expectations of victims' families. As its appeal has skyrocketed, true crime has come under greater scrutiny. The most successful entries bypass lurid details and shed light on the society in which these transgressions occur. But “the price you have to pay in sociology, in anthropology, in enriching our understanding of something beyond the crime itself—it's fairly high,” Keefe says. “You have to remember that this is a real story about real people. They're alive. They're out there.” This episode was recorded on May 4, 2024 at the Cascade PBS Ideas Festival, in Seattle, Washington. For many fans of the true crime genre, serial killer Jeffery Dahmer has been a decades-long obsession. Netflix's miniseries DAHMER-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story reignited a legion of sycophants of the horrific serial killer. As with all exploitative true crime, an insidious underbelly is exposed, which is retraumatizing for the victims and their family members, still coming to grips with the senseless destruction caused by a real-life monster. Netflix and creator Ryan Murphy won critical acclaim for the show, and star Evan Peters took home a Best Actor Golden Globe in 2023 for his portrayal of the notorious serial killer. In today's episode, we speak with Rita Isbell, the sister of Dahmer's victim Errol Lindsey. Isbell, whose harrowing victim's impact statement was recreated verbatim by actress DaShawn Barnes in the miniseries, shares her story of being blindsided by the show and the aftermath and the impact after she and others were dragged back into the spotlight 31 years later. Hosts Terra Newell, Collier Landry and Rita Isbell were all featured in the Vice News documentary special "True Crime Scene" which aired on ViceTV on May 4, 2023. This interview was recorded live as a part of the special. ***Join our Survivor Squad True Crime Podcasting Course!*** https://coaching.terranewellsurvival.com/ethical-true-crime-podcasting/ Survivor Squad Podcast links: https://linktr.ee/thesurvivorsqaud Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thesurvivorsquad • Terra's links: https://linktr.ee/terranewell • Collier's links: https://collierlandry.com/links • Collier's Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-collier-landry-show/id1551076031 • Book a 1-on-1 with Terra for trauma/ toxic relationship coaching: https://calendly.com/terranewell91/15-minute-coaching-consult?month=2023-06 • Join Terra's Complementary Trauma Support Group: Every 1st and 3rd Monday 5:00 PM PT mailto: Terranewellcoaching@gmail.com It's important to consider seeking support from a licensed mental health professional or support group. Continuing our Sundance coverage in episode 608 of the No Film School podcast, we sat down with editors and sound teams from films premiering at the festival. In addition to unpacking post production — the final and critical phase of filmmaking — we uncovered possibly the biggest work crushes in the film industry. In this conversation, you'll hear from: Emmy-winning editor, Taylor Mason - Editor for the psychological horror film Birth/Rebirth which premiered in the Midnight section on say one of Sundance. Mason's previous work includes the Netflix mini-series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Pose, as well as the variety show A Black Lady Sketch Show, for which Taylor and her team of editors became the first all-Black team to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Picture Editing. Jon Philpot - Editor for the mockumentary film Theater Camp. Jon previously worked on beloved comedy series like Hacks, Search Party, Broad City, and Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, and At Home With Amy Sedaris. Mike James Gallagher and Anthony Vanchure - Part of the sound team on Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman, the pair also recently worked on the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, as well as Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me and their collaboration on the documentary Lucy and Desi earned the pair an Emmy nomination. In this episode, we discuss… Breaking story as an editor The emotions of door sounds Temp sound and editors hoping to impress the sound designers and vice-versa Figuring out the most interesting way to keep people engaged The great thing about low budget projects Balancing the tone of a more dramatic story with moments of levity The great combination of laughter and fear How sound design can affect people psychologically Why it's so fun for editors and sound designers to collaborate Memorable Quotes “Is this a scene? Is this supposed to be entertaining? What does this have to do with anything?” [16:14] “I wanna do a great job. I wanna do that on every project I work on. Royal family tensions has Jon Francois and Andrew Vandertunt talking about family members they no longer see or speak to. Jon also speaks with legendary actress Michael Learned, who is currently known as Jeffrey Dahmer's grandmother in the Netflix megahit "Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story".
It's week two of OctoBoo and we're bringing in the big guns! For this new installment, we're discussing one of the most notorious serial killers in history, Jeffery Dahmer. In 2002, Jeremy Renner, cooked up a rather delicious performance in his direct to video junk food film simply called 'Dahmer'. In 2022, Ryan Murphy created a 10 episode smörgåsbord of a show with Evan Peters taking on the culinary curiosities of Jeffery Dahmer in 'Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' on Netflix. While not a monster in the traditional sense, these true tales of terror are heinous and horrific. Turn out the lights and load up on the snacks, as we're going to satisfy all of your podcast cravings as we scare up another OctoBoo episode.

Sarah finally caved and watched Ryan Murphy's Jeffrey Dahmer series, the second most-popular show in Netflix history. (Can you guess the first?). It was difficult viewing, if also able to inspire a kind of love for one of Dahmer's victims. As she and Nancy discuss, the reasons to watch/not watch these shows are complicated. Is it possible to humanize victims who met a most inhumane end? Who gets to profit from misery, and what, if anything, do creators of dramatized true crime owe to those whose real lives were forever scarred? Nancy instead watched part of the Dahmer documentary, and she and Sarah compare notes on fictional vs. nonfictional tragedy. Did Alex Jones learn the meaning of “fuck around and find out”? Oh yes he did, and yet does not seem to care that he owes the parents of the children murdered at Sandy Hook nearly $1 billion. Nancy is appalled by Stewart's much-praised interview with Arkansas AG Leslie Rutledge, Sarah misses the old Jon Stewart, and we compare Stewart's smug “take-down” to a deeply reported, illuminating Reuters story on trans issues. We read some moving reader comments, offer our hotbox picks, and (drumroll!)… Announce our first Zoom meet-up. Wednesday, October 19 at 9pm ET.
