Q&A on the Max series Love & Death with actor Lily Rabe. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Candy is a quiet housewife who, overnight, decides to have an affair with her neighbour. But the relationship soon spirals out of control when her lover's wife is found dead and all suspicion falls on her.
Take a ride through the actor's life and listen to our latest episode. Lily Rabe, who can currently be seen in David E. Kelley's Love + Death on HBO Max, and on Shrinking on Apple TV +, is the daughter of prolific playwright David Rabe and celebrated actress, Jill Clayburgh, and we begin our conversation with her childhood spent near the stage. Watching the world's greatest talent in rehearsals for her father's masterpiece, Hurlyburly, Lily was bitten by the performance bug early on. We discuss her time as a dancer and how that turned to acting, life at Northwestern and her very fancy degree, and how life almost imitated art when she played a restaurant-employed actor for the film No Reservations. She describes why her heart belongs to theater and the “religious experience” that is performing Shakespeare In The Park. We discuss being a part of the Ryan Murphy American Horror Story family, and in a quick fire round, Lily talks playing Liz Cheney, the sheer joy she felt during The Undoing, why George Clooney is the happiest person, and why her role in his The Tender Bar opposite Ben Affleck was a favorite, and why George and Ben are, too. We discuss crafting the complicated relationship her character Meg has with Harrison Ford's Paul in Shrinking, and we talk in detail about why embodying Betty Gore for Love + Death sometimes meant taking her home with her, for better or worse. Having worked with her husband Hamish over many years, Lily tells us why co-directing the soon-to-be-released film Downtown Owl whet their appetites for much more. And on the subject of "more”, Lily tells us why she's feeling so fulfilled…. so will simply take some more of that, please. We touch on Presumed Innocent, ahead for her on AppleTV+ and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga. We talk about how paying attention to saying no helped build her brilliant career, and why she looks to feel compelled to play a part. And lastly, Lily shares her great taste with a long list of her most favorite obsessions. We hope you love our conversation with everyone's favorite, Lily Rabe, just as much as we do. We're sharpening our knives this week for our long-anticipated review of the latest Scream film, or Scream 5 unofficially. This is the first of the franchise to not be directed by Wes Craven, as we instead of the filmmakers behind Ready or Not. Is this meta slasher whodunnit as much of a scream? And afterward, we discuss George Clooney's latest directorial effort, The Tender Bar, which is based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer and stars Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, and Lily Rabe. For MOVIES in Good Pop Bad Pop we talk about the new SCREAM (2022) film that dropped in theaters. Does it hold a candle to the first film? George Clooney directed a new movie that hit Amazon Prime, THE TENDER BAR, starring Tye Sheridan, Ben Affleck, Lily Rabe and Christopher Lloyd. We've got another DC Animated movie to talk about with INJUSTICE. On an alternate Earth, the Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane, which sends the hero on a path of destruction. Superman decides to take control of Earth and Batman and his allies must try to stop him. Showtime has a new A24 film that's adapted from writer-director Stephen Karam, adapted from his Tony Award-winning play, THE HUMANS. Netflix dropped a stop motion animated movie THE HOUSE. And in Marvel News it looks like MOON KNIGHT might drop on March 30th 2022 and we're getting our first trailer on 1/17 during Monday Night Football. For our second review this week, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer joined me to discuss the newest film from Academy Award-winner George Clooney. "The Tender Bar" is a sweet coming-of-age film now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, starring Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, Christopher Lloyd, and newcomer Daniel Ranieri. Based on a memoir by JR Moehringer, the film is filled with familiar, grounded, and nostalgic conventions of storytelling meant to inspire and warm our hearts. What did we think of the performances? The direction from Clooney? We discuss all of these points and whether or not Ben Affleck will receive an Oscar nomination for acting in our review down below. Enjoy! On this episode, I am joined by the twin team of Cole and Justin, better known as The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro, who return to the AwardsWatch Oscar Podcast to talk about the Screen Actors Guild and offer our predictions. We hit all categories and dive into both likely nominations, weird SAG-only possibilities (like Viola Davis and Sandra Bullock in The Unforgivable) and break down how many nominations Belfast and The Power of the Dog can score. Each stand a chance to to get in 3 or even 4 individual actors plus the SAG Cast category. The all-time record still stands at 5 nominations for a single film and we could see it happen once, or even twice, this year. West Side Story is a big part of the conversation, which was recorded on December 26, because at the time no screeners, digital or physical, had been sent to the SAG nominating committee for voting. As of this writing, digital screeners have now reached the 2000-2500 voters but is it too late? Voting opened on December 6 ends on January 9 and many might have already submitted their picks, deciding not to wait on 20th Century/Disney to drop those screeners. Our predictions for WSS reflect that here. Support for this podcast comes from Amazon Studios, presenting Being the Ricardos. Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem) are threatened by shocking personal accusations, a political smear, and cultural taboos in Academy Award-winning writer and director Aaron Sorkin's behind-the-scenes drama Being the Ricardos. A revealing glimpse of the couple's complex romantic and professional relationship, the film takes audiences into the writers' room, onto the soundstage, and behind closed doors with Ball and Arnaz during one critical production week of their groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy. Featuring J.K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, Jake Lacy, Linda Lavin, Ronny Cox, and John Rubinstein. Now nominated for three Critics Choice Awards for Best Original Screenplay Aaron Sorkin, Best Actress Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actor J.K. Simmons. Variety raves the film is “intoxicating; a beautiful illustration of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz." Being the Ricardos is streaming now on Prime Video. Support for this podcast also comes from Amazon Studios' The Tender Bar, which tells the story of J.R. (Tye Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy's determined mother (Lily Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie's bar. The Tender Bar is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer. The Los Angeles Times calls the film “a nostalgic coming-of-age drama lovingly directed by George Clooney... Affleck has never been better." The Tender Bar is in theaters now and streaming January 7 on Prime Video. This podcast runs 1h 20m with music and sponsorship content.
Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Movies (a self-explanatory podcast)! Today's episode centers on "The Tender Bar," George Clooney's adaptation of JR Moehringer's 2005 memoir. JR (whose younger and older versions are played, respectively, by Daniel Raineri and Tye Sheridan) grows up in his grandfather's (Christopher Lloyd) house with his mother (Lily Rabe) and uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), who owns a local bar. With no father in the picture, JR grows up under Charlie's tutelage, learning how to be an avid reader, captivating writer and most importantly, a good man. It's an earnest, comfortable work from Clooney and I feel that if someone, through this movie's example, were to grasp a better understanding of how best to exude one's masculinity, Clooney would consider it a win. || Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod
It's movies-that-studios-are-pushing-for-awards week on Spoilerpiece! First up, Evan and Dave talk about Mike Mills' C'MON C'MON (1:48), a funny drama starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny, who steps in to take care of his nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) while Jesse's mother Viv (Gaby Hoffman) tends to her husband, Jesse's father, who has bipolar disorder. That's a clunky description, but don't hold that against us because it's a great conversation about a movie that's firmly plugged into its emotional arc. Next, everyone saw THE TENDER BAR (22:03), director George Clooney's latest, about JR (Daniel Ranieri as a kid and Tye Sheridan as a young adult), who moves with his mother (Lily Rabe) to her childhood home. Good news: Her brother, JR's Uncle Charlie, is Ben Affleck. The bad news? Not enough Ben Affleck. Lastly, we talk about RED ROCKET (39:15), director Sean Baker's latest. Mikey Saber (a terrific Simon Rex), a washed-up porn star, returns to his working class Texas hometown, crashing into his estranged wife's life, and striking up a creepy romance with a 17-year-old (Suzanna Son) whom he's trying to groom into a porn career that he hopes will restart his own. Over on our Patreon we talk about FARGO, the Coen brothers' comedic thriller starring Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, and Steve Buscemi. If you join our $5 tier, you'll get immediate access to that conversation and more than 200 bonus episodes!
Lily Rabe is a talented actress with superior bloodlines: her mother was the gifted Jill Clayburgh, and her father is playwright David Rabe. But she has carved her own path and proves it yet again as the loving mother in George Clooney's new film The Tender Bar, now in theaters and soon on Amazon Prime. One of her biggest fans is producer-director Ryan Murphy, who has crafted challenging roles for her in every season of American Horror Story… an offer she admits she can't refuse. Smart, sensitive and charming, Lily Rabe won over Leonard and Jessie within moments of starting this conversation.
In this weeks episode of the world's-fastest-movie-review podcast Jackson and Mike review two new films! “THE TENDER BAR” A boy growing up on Long Island seeks out father figures among the patrons at his Uncles Bar. Starring Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, and Christopher Lloyd. And a quick review of “SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME” With Spider-Man's identity now revealed, our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life as Peter Parker from the high stakes of being a superhero. Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
AMERICAN HORROR STORY – DOUBLE FEATURE SERIES REVIEW In it's 10th season, “American Horror Story” decided to split its time between two completely different stories. The first to air was “Red Tide”, which followed a writer (Finn Wittrock) and his wife (Lily Rabe) and child who move out temporarily to a seaside town during the… Read More »Screener Squad: American Horror Story – Double Feature
This week we're talking about the WandaVision finale (just like everyone else) and a tight, sweaty little mystery series, Tell Me Your Secrets. But first…Who's been vaccinated? It seems like a free for all here in California, but we ain't complaining if more people get vaccinated. (Well, maybe a little.)WandaVision FINALE Disney+Well, knock us over with a feather. We loved WandaVision! As those of you who listen to our podcast or follow us on social media, you're well aware that we are not "superhero people!" With the rare exception, like last year's Joker, we rarely give raves for the massively popular genre, especially the franchises. The lead cast was great from top to bottom Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and one of our all-time favs, Kathryn Hahn. And the supporting cast was great, too, especially Teyonah Parris, Randall Park, Kat Dennings, and Evan Peters. Then there's this little earwormAgatha After AllTell Me Your Secrets Prime VideoRecommended to us by a member of our WATAEW Facebook Group, Rick, we were drawn to it because Travis is a big Lily Rabe fan. But, once we started watching, Hamish Linklater and Amy Brenneman really stole the show. The show is a taut mystery that's begging for a season 2. It has a strong supporting cast, including Marque Richardson, Richard Thomas and Emiri Crutchfield, who you may remember as the young narrator of the most recent season of Fargo. Travis recommends:Travis loves Michelle Dockery. This week he recommends two shows (besides Downton) that she starred in, that you may have missed.Good Behavior and Godless. Elaine def agrees, at least about Godless!
Film critic Clarisse Loughrey and film programmer Anna Bogutskaya, American Horror Story super-fans, discuss and dissect every episode of AHS, from the very beginning. In the first episode of a new season, we meet the key characters from American Horror Story: Asylum. This one is definitely NSFW. Digressions include: a rant about Adam Levine, a remix of Shaggy's classic It Wasn't Me and disinfectant powder. Featuring our weekly categories: Top Quote, Best Naked Man Moment, MVP of the Episode and Insensitive Historical Reference of The Week. Introducing a new category, Cinematic Reference of the Week. We discuss the episode in detail, but will not spoil anything that lies ahead in this or future seasons of AHS. Follow Clarisse on @clarisselou and Anna on @annabdemented
The Swamp Witch Trinity: Lily Rabe, Thomas Jane, and Bray Wyatt. The Immortal Jessica Alba. Forever 27. Always 27. We watched The Veil, and we got real confused when ghosts showed up. We just watched a Let's Play of the Resident Evil 7 demo, and it reminded me of The Veil.
Prepare for maybe our most fascinating episode yet...it's "It-Boy" Props Supervisor, Buist Bickley! Buist is one of the most sought after Props Designers on Broadway and boy does he have the stories to back it up. He and Cory discuss his work on 'The Last Ship,' 'Act One,' 'The Nance,' 'Mothers and Sons' and a whole host of other shows. Learn how he made "fake" cookie dough for Lily Rabe in 'Seminar' and an entire meal's worth of "fake unhealthy" food for Katie Holmes in 'Dead Accounts.' From hand props to furniture to weapons to special effects, he's involved in it all. Cory and Buist also chat about the logistical minefield of being of Props Supervisor including New York traffic laws, managing thousands of dollars worth of receipts, union houses, and actors who manage to channel all of their frustrations into that one prop they can't stand! He's a jack of all trades and he's sharing his secrets on today's show!
