Thank you for listening to Python Bytes in 2022, have a great holiday break, and Brian and I will see you next week. Python 3.11 is here! Keeping with the annual release cycle, the Python core devs have released the latest version of Python. And this one is a big one. It has more friendly error messages and is massively faster than 3.10 (between 10 to 60% faster) which is a big deal for a year over year release of a 30 year old platform. This is it folks! This is the first of the special episodes I want to do from time to time, to expand our perspective and get inspired by what’s going on elsewhere. The guests will not come directly from the Bayesian world, but will still be related to science or programming. For the first episode of the kind, I had the chance to chat with Michael Kennedy! Michael is not only a very knowledgeable and respected member of the Python community, he’s also the founder and host of Talk Python To Me, the most popular Python podcast. He’s the founder and chief author at Talk Python Training, where he develops many Python developer online courses. And before that, Michael was a professional software trainer for over 10 years – he has taught numerous developers throughout the world! But Michael is not only an entrepreneur and teacher – he’s also a father, a husband, and a proud inhabitant of Portland, OR! As you’ll hear, our conversation spanned a large array of topics — the role of Python in science and research; how it came to be so important in data science, and why; what are Python’s threats and weaknesses and how it should evolve to not become obsolete. Michael also has interesting thoughts on the role of programming in education and how it relates to geometry — but I’ll let you discover that one by yourself… Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Most developers are aware of the term “Search Engine Optimization”, and like me, have a vague understanding of what it actually means. For a long time I thought that this was more about the content of a website than how that site was created or built. In other words, I saw it as an issue for the folks over in the marketing or sales organizations, certainly not for us engineers to worry about. It turns out that the design and architecture of the technologies implementing a website have a large impact in it’s discoverability. I didn’t understand this until about a year or two ago when I needed to perform some optimizations for tryexceptpass. I met up with Michael Kennedy from the Talk Python To Me podcast, and together we recorded our musings about SEO and present them to you in this two-part series.

Traditionally, when we have depended upon software to make a decision with real-world implications, that software was deterministic. It had some inputs, a few if statements, and we could point to the exact line of code where the decision was made. And the same inputs lead to the same decisions. Nowadays, with the rise of machine learning and neural networks, this is much more blurry. How did the model decide? Has the model and inputs drifted apart, so the decisions are outside what it was designed for? These are just some of the questions discussed with our guest, Andrew Clark, on this episode of Talk Python To Me.
