Album: Subtract   Wife's illness, plagiarism court case and death of music entrepreneur friend Jamal Edwards all came to bear on Sheeran's sixth studio album, made with the National's Aaron Dessner.  The fifth and final entry in his series of albums titled with mathematical symbols, Sheeran wrote and recorded its 14 tracks with Aaron Dessner, a member of US alt-rock band the National who also had a major creative role in Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore.   It is billed as a return to traditional singer-songwriter performance, after the polished pop of much of Sheeran's catalogue; a press release promises songs ranging from “pared back, folk-leaning textures to bolder, full-band/orchestral arrangements”.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode originally aired on December 16, 2021. We've hosted some incredible Talkhouse Podcast conversations in 2021, and for our final brand-new episode of the year, we've got two people responsible for some of the best records of this year: Julien Baker and Aaron Dessner. Baker released her third album, Little Oblivions, back in February, and it's a doozy. Expanding her sonic palette massively, Baker delivered her powerful, vulnerable songs with much bigger sounds. That might have felt like a gamble, but it paid off massively—she produced it herself and pushed herself into new spaces. Dessner is of course a founding member of the National, with whom he's played for the past 20+ years. While his main band slowed down over the past couple of years, Dessner has been operating at hyperspeed. He was one of the main co-writers and producers on Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore albums. He won an Album of the Year Grammy for the former, and was nominated for five more Grammys for the latter. He somehow also found time to release a new album with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon under the name Big Red Machine called How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? In addition to loads of guest singers, that record features Dessner on occasional lead vocals. These two have a fantastic conversation about creativity and, specifically, production: Aaron has done a lot of producing for other artists, and Julien is just getting into it. Julien talks about what it's like to have a full live band backing her, rather than being a quote-unquote masochist and playing alone. They talk about what it was like to be deprived of live audiences for so long, and Aaron gets into how his studio setup has changed over the years. Also, they both know what it's like when music can make you cry—that's the kind of thing we love here at Talkhouse. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Julien Baker and Aaron Dessner for having such a wonderful chat. As one of the few younger rappers who has been recognized by the Grammys recently, Roddy Ricch has more of a relationship with the Recording Academy than some of his peers. At the 2020 awards, Roddy was nominated for a whopping six nominations, including nods for both Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year. Anyone who has followed the conversation around the Grammys and hip-hop over the years knows that they haven't always gotten it right in the past.During an appearance on Kevin Durant's The ETCs Podcast last week, Roddy told KD that after his 2020 nominations he was “tripping” on the Grammys for snubbing a few of his peers. “Uzi is like, like when I was talking to the Grammy's ‘y'all ain't nominate Uzi for [Best Rap Album],' I was tripping on them,” he remembered. “Even like Lil Baby, y'all ain't nominate Lil Baby? Like I'm tripping, cause it's like everybody got their own lane, and it should be spoken about, talked about more because I feel like the n——s now that's doing shi* like, no disrespect, we really breaking barriers.”In the year where Roddy received all his nominations, the projects from Uzi and Baby that would've been eligible are Lil Baby's My Turn and Lil Uzi Vert's long-awaited release, Eternal Atake, which were both released in 2020 as well. In fact, Baby's My Turn was the best-selling album of 2020 (!) — even beating out Taylor Swift's Folklore.Roddy also told KD that instead of competition, he feels like it's more of a collaborative vibe within the new cohort. “I feel like it's more for sure more a collaboration because we run into each other more,” he said. “But I feel like everybody got their own lane, everybody got their thing they do, you know what I'm saying?”Aimer, c'est se donnerL'amour est un mélange subtil de sentiments et de raison qui donne un élan vital à toutes les relations familiales.

Vinyl records have been the top-selling physical media format in the United States for the first time in almost 40 years. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), vinyl record sales reached around $232 million, while CD sales only amounted to roughly $130 million. Vinyl records preceded cassette tapes and CDs as a media format, but while cassettes have not sold more than 100,000 units since 2003 and CD sales have declined by 95% since peaking in 2000, vinyl record sales have been increasing since 2005. RIAA revealed that vinyl record revenue went up by 4%, while CD revenue plunged by 48% in the first half of 2020. Some music enthusiasts value the higher-quality sound from vinyl records because most digital music platforms compress music files, affecting sound quality. According to media outlet Billboard, vinyl albums hit their biggest weekly sales in September thanks to the first batch of music releases for Record Store Day, an event celebrating record store culture with exclusive vinyl record and CD launches and other activities. Over 800,000 vinyl albums were sold in the first few days of September. The top three best-selling records were Billie Eilish's Live at Third Man Records, David Bowie's ChangesNowBowie, and Taylor Swift's Folklore. Even with the resurgence of vinyl records, the RIAA found that all physical formats have become niche products now that most people subscribe to music streaming on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. In the first half of 2020, streaming increased by 12% to $4.8 billion. RIAA reported that streaming brought in 85% of music revenue during those six months, making it the dominant music format.

What a year!  From guests and guest co-hosts to podcasting from the Philippines itself, it has been quite a second season.  No sophomore slump for us!  Along with our regular discussions of pop culture and FilipinX issues, we opened the pop culture vault (courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic) and pivoted to respond to the Anti-Black Racism protests this season.  Without our Filipino sense of being disaster-proof, being able to course correct our programming on the fly would have been more difficult.  Thank you for listening to us this season and we look forward to talk to you all this Fall.  Maraming salamat!   In the Mix this week: Taylor Swift's "Folklore", Kygo's mix of Tina Turner's "Higher Love", "Hamilton" on Disney+, Black Sheep Production of "Hello Stranger"
