LSU baseball went head to head with the #15 Texas Longhorns, ULL, and Texas State in the Astros College Classic this weekend at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. LSU won the tournament with three wins in three days beating their opponents by a total of 21-12 in those three games. One thing that stood out the most was the starting pitching shakeup moving Alabama Crimson Tide transfer Luke Holman to the Friday spot. Holman had a fantastic outing notching twelve strikeouts in just shy of six innings, giving up only three hits and zero runs on the night. Starting pitching all weekend was solid, with Thatcher Hurd moving to the Sunday slot and UCLA Bruins transfer Gage Jump getting the nod on Saturday against the Ragin' Cajuns. Plus, Hayden Travinski continues to be reliable and productive at the plate. The veteran went 5-for-10 on the weekend with a solo home run on Saturday and three doubles on the weekend. In basketball news, men's head coach Matt McMahon announced that Jalen Cook has been suspended from the team for "failure to meet standards" that the head coach has set for the team. Cook has been out since February 13th with a hamstring injury and likely will not return for the season. The LSU Tigers are headed to Super Regionals! After taking down the Tulane Green Wave on Friday night with a phenomenal complete game by ace Paul Skenes, LSU took down Oregon State in back-to-back matchups on Sunday night and Monday afternoon. The Tigers' bats were phenomenal and the pitching was solid enough to keep them out of the losers bracket and advance to the next round of postseason play. In the Tigers first matchup with Oregon State and the second game of the weekend, LSU wasn't getting much moving offensively. A storm halted play after the third inning but once the rain cleared, LSU came alive. Five home runs on Sunday evening matched with nineteen strikeouts from the three pitchers who saw action Sunday, starter Ty Floyd, Thatcher Hurd who was on the mound after the rain delay, and Gavin Guidry as the closer, tallied nineteen strikeouts matching their season high total. Power hitter Dylan Crews said “The bats were a little quiet. We were able to go in and reset our lineup and I think it was a turning point to get the team going and the crowd going.” And the bats didn't quiet down on Monday. Four different players knocked one out of Alex Box, including back-to-back homers from Hayden Travinski and Cade Beloso for the second day in a row. When LSU needed offense, hitters from the top to the bottom of the lineup delivered throughout the entirety of the Baton Rouge regional. LSU baseball is getting all of the love this preseason, for good reason: unanimous number one team in the country, number one recruiting class in the country, number one transfer portal class in the country, number one MLB prospect in the country. LSU is the favorite to win a national title this year, and while it is incredibly difficult to win in college baseball the scene is set too perfectly for LSU to not win the College World Series. The Tigers are a top team in the country yet hasn't won a title in fourteen years which is, by LSU standards, too long. They've gotten in the big dance, like their 2017 matchup against the Florida Gators in the CWS Final, but couldn't pull it out to hoist the trophy at the end of it. There is too much talent on this team to not hoist the trophy at the end of it this year. But what are some factors that could hold the Tigers back this season? Unfortunately the injury bug has already bitten the LSU Tigers as RHP Grant Taylor is out for the season with a torn UCL. Injuries can hold any team back, no matter how much or how little talent you have. Barring injuries, the only thing that can hold LSU back is themselves. Their two biggest problem areas last season were pitching depth and defense. Head coach Jay Johnson made it a priority this offseason to patch up those holes bringing in pitchers Paul Skenes, Thatcher Hurd, Christian Little, and others via the transfer portal. The schedule is incredibly tough taking on three top ten teams in Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee in the first three weeks of conference play. But if you wanna be the best, you've gotta beat the best. LSU baseball opens it's season Friday at The Box against Western Michigan. Due to weather first pitch is now at 3pm on Friday afternoon.
