I moderated a panel at the recent AWE conference that took place a couple of weeks ago in Long Beach, California. The panel featured Karl Guttag from KGOnTech, Adi Robertson from the Verve, Jeri Ellsworth from Tilt Five, and Ed Tang from Avegant. The session was titled: Current State and Future Direction of AR Glasses and the session description reads:A panel of experts will discuss the current and future state of AR spatial computing devices, given the influence of the new Vision Pro world. Has the Vision Pro influenced the XR industry to change the direction of the development of consumer-oriented devices? If so, what should those new directions be, and what limitations are there to implement them? The discussion will center upon examining the technical development of spatial computing with light weight glasses and the roles that they should now have. You can find a video version of the session on the AWE Youtube channel, but presented here is an audio version I cleaned up a bit.You can also find the show notes at thearshow.com.Links From The Episode- Panelist: Jeri Ellsworth of Tilt Five- Panelist: Adi Robertson of The Verge- Panelist: Karl Guttag of KGOnTech- Panelist: Ed Tang of Avegant- Breakdown: Karl outlined the panel discussion and added extra detail in a blog post.- Video: AWE PANEL: Current State and Future Direction of AR Glasses
This week is show #199. Our guest is Jeri Ellsworth, CEO and Co-Founder of Tilt Five. Next week we'll record show #200 in front of a live audience at AWE in Long Beach, CA. This week we review Apple AI (Apple Intelligence), their cross-platform AI implementation. Also in the news, Mistral raises $600 M to compete with OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic. Sandbox metaverse raises $20M, and achieves unicorn status while unicorn VR Chat lays off 30% of its staff. Jeri Ellsworth is co-founder of the AR tabletop game hardware company Tilt Five, which creates PC-based 3D AR board games that play on a reflective mat. Hardware is hard. Harder when it also needs great software. With Nintendo as its guiding light, against the odds, Tilt Five is building momentum. I had a chance to catch up with Jeri Ellsworth, co-founder and CEO of Tilt Five again at Augmented World Expo 2023. Be sure to catch my previous conversation in episode #1021 where she gives her full epic backstory in inventing Tilt Five at Valve, getting fire, and eventually being able to re-acquire the IP rights against all odds. At the time of this recording, Tilt Five had been shipping for six months, and I get a bit of an update for how their launch has been going, and their various efforts to promote a physical face-to-face use case for tabletop AR gaming. Ellsworth also shared with me how she used ChatGPT in order to rapidly prototype an AR demo for Tilt Five that they were showing at AWE. She's emphasizes the benefits of being able to quickly discover the fun within AR interactions, and how ChatGPT has been revolutionizing her own rapid prototyping processes by feeding in the Tilt Five API code as an input prompt, and then asking it how a senior Unity developer would go about solving how to visualize a specific data set of live satellite data. We start by remembering a professional friend of mine who we lost this month - Mike Fahey of Kotaku. We talk about how we would be the two press representatives at Atlanta events in the late 2000's and how we helped out each other professionally and personally. We take some comments from the Discord server regarding issues with the Tilt Five AR headset that other people are seeing, as well as some clarifications at how it works. I went to Dragon Con and had a great time - although a lot of people brought home a really bad souvenir. I hosted several panels, including an amazing one with Master Daniel and Carlos Pesina of Mortal Kombat fame. Check it out on YouTube! Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 will be online due to wanting to not hold their event in Florida. Sony has rejected Microsoft's offer to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles for three extra years, calling it inadequate. Mario Kart Tour is now out on mobile - and it is definitely a lootbox and microtransaction game, complete with very low odds. The Untitled Goose Game is great - I played it on Twitch and had a honkin good time. A new Kickstarter has launched that has real promise in the Augmented Reality space - Tilt Five - and it's aimed at board games. At Oculus Connect 6, we didn't hear much about the Rift line, except to say that the Oculus Quest will soon be able to play all Rift games. Is this the end of Oculus's investment in the Rift line? Then we take calls about the Sony State of Play and why Sony would cover Call of Duty so much.
