Who was this beautiful tabby? I drove to work today because I have an appointment with the the creative team at the mall about the space they are giving us.  I saw a cat in the road on Northbridge, so I pulled over to pick him up.  As I was digging around to find a bag and gloves (I carry for this specific purpose) I see a woman pull over on the other side of the road, where the cat laid.  She's screaming at people to slow down because we live in a Latin neighborhood and even though the speed limit is 30 I swear they are usually doing 60 through there.  I don't ever remember a time when someone else stopped to help.   She asked what I was going to do with the cat and I told her that I'm from Big Cat Rescue and that I'd see to it he was cremated with our other beloved cats who pass on.  She noticed that he looked like he'd just been hit, but he was in a huge pool of still wet blood and was definitely dead.  As I cradled him I noted how gorgeous his fur and what excellent condition he was in.  This was someone's beloved pet and probably had just escaped.  He was an intact male, so I'm guessing nature called to him and he made a run for it.  He had no idea what to expect out here.  Tonight someone may well be calling his name, but he won't respond and they will probably never know what happened.   Part of me thinks I should post his fate on a pole nearby, but part of me thinks that may be worse than not knowing.     Later in the day:  I sent this to Haley, Joyce and Patrick at the mall.   Great meeting you guys today and if helpful to your process, I'm happy to tour you around the sanctuary.  You can bring friends or family so you can observe how other's are impacted by the stories of the cats we've rescued.  My contact info is below and I'm here 7 days a week, so I usually only need a day's notice.   Our primary goal is to end cub petting, as that drives the vast majority of breeding, abusing and discarding of big cats.  None of the cats bred for this purpose serve any conservation value because they are all cross bred and inbred.  The latter is because of the public's fascination with white tigers which only comes from severe inbreeding.   The primary message we want to get across in this space is that cub petting, or paying to see cubs on display, is what is actually causing their extinction in the wild.  The cubs aren't taken from the wild.  They are all bred in captivity, but it is the glut of last year's cubs (about 200 per year conservatively) that stimulates demand for their parts, which results in more poaching for tigers in the wild.   This is our animated explainer video that cub petting is causing the extinction of the tiger: https://youtu.be/QFn8mwD757s   It's gotten about 15,000 views in the past 2 weeks on YouTube and 368,000 views on Facebook.  Reading the comments gives you some insight as to the effect it is having.  https://www.facebook.com/bigcatrescue/videos/2246856182261587/UzpfSTEwMDAxMjI3MTcxNDc1MTo2MjE0MzEzMjQ5NDI1ODY/?q=shocking%20truth%20about%20cub%20petting&epa=SEARCH_BOX   It's a tough message to get across without traumatizing animal lovers, but I think we've found the right balance in this piece to make the case.  Showcasing this video in a way that people can both see and hear it would make the best use of the space for our mission.   Our ultimate goal is that people stop paying to see and play with cubs so that places like Big Cat Rescue don't need to exist to clean up the mess.  Our federal bill will be re introduced soon as the Big Cat Public Safety Act, and I think it can pass this session.  It bans cub petting and private ownership of lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs and cougars. That will fix 99.9% of the problem.  Getting people to call their member of Congress is where we are focusing most of our attention at BigCatAct.com and I mentioned that we can make one of the coupons that appears on people's phones, after watching the VidPicAR app video, be "Text CATS to 52886" and it sends people down that path to making the call, but dialing the number for them and giving them a script to say.  Try it and you'll see what I mean.   If you go to ARzoo.me it redirects to our page at https://bigcatrescue.org/ar-zoo/ where you can use the VidPicAR app to look at the images on the page and see the videos that pop up.  It also explains how revolutionary this concept is and makes you guys the leaders in bringing it to the Americas.  We have created these two posters, for our onsite gift shop, that are 24 inches high and 43 inches wide.  That seems to be a pretty good size for a person standing in front of the image to be able to observe the video, even if more than one person is trying to do so at the same time.  That 16:9 aspect ratio for the poster also coincides with the optimal size and shape of the video.   We'd like to have 12 interactive posters.  They all use the same VidPicAR app.  It just plays a different video, based on the image the phone is pointed toward. Afton, our videographer is gathering footage for about 1 minute each, for each species, and we were thinking to do 12 (of 35) species of wild cats.  Because of the potential for overlap of sound, I was thinking to limit the audio on the species videos with just that cat's sounds and ambient noises (birds, splashing, paper tearing if the cat is playing with enrichment, etc.)  I like the idea of information signs, but one reason zoos are such pathetic places for learning is that less than 27% of visitors actually read the signs.  It may work better in this space as parents are just bored out of their minds while their kids play.  If you use the VidPicAR app to look at the Blue Apron image attached, you can see how we can make a window to an outside world in the graphic on the wall, or not, depending on how we want the video to load. (free floating or pinned in place).   As I walked into some of your other spaces, like MOSI, when it was open, I didn't know what I was supposed to do.  I didn't know if there was a fee to pay or some expectation, so I'd like it to be very clear to people that everything inside this space is free to do.  Maybe even tying it to the message like, "Everything here is free for you to experience, because all wild cats should live free."  Having it open all the time and created in a way that is hard to damage, would reach the most people possible.  I'm hiring someone to work weekends and maybe Friday nights.  When the space is manned, I'd like to offer people the chance to see our cats in 360 by trying on our six Oculus Go headsets.  (Only for people 13 and up according to Oculus' warning though) This will be free too.  We have dozens of great videos they can choose from a list and we are having a CGI tiger built right now for an even more immersive look at a tiger up close.  It should be ready by the time the space is.   This is screen grab of the main cub character from the animated video.  I can have the artist do more versions of him for the space if needed.   We would be willing to invest in a large screen TV and some of the decor to make the most of this space.  Below are a few vendors I've been looking at for bamboo trim, thatching, etc.  Most of the wild cat species are from tropical, forested climates.  Only the snow leopard, Canada lynx and Siberian lynx come from colder regions.  You can't go wrong with ferns, vines, bamboo and greenery.   Thank you again for this opportunity.  My hope is that zoos see this as the wave of the future and begin converting their spaces from prison cells to interactive places of real learning.  Sorry if there are typos in this.  I had to bang it out before doing a tour.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Encouraging Volunteers to Create School Programming for Oculus Just one addition to Howard's notes:   The Oculus Go headsets in the Call of the Wild room are capable of storing a couple hours of content each and you do not need access to a computer or WIFI to play back the content once it has been loaded onto the headset.  These currently cost $250.00 each, but we can get $199.00 versions that hold about half that, or an hour of content we choose.   We currently have 3 main pieces of content.   • One is a display of 20 of our 1-5 min videos where the user can choose what they want to see with the controller. • One is a display of a few of the same videos where it starts with the first video and rolls through all of them in sequence.  The user can't change what plays. • One is a work in progress where the user can choose their own adventure.  As they walk around the sanctuary they can click on signs (pictures of the cats) and play that cat's story before being returned back to the tour path.   Due to storage limits on the Oculus Go you have to know which one of the above you want to present and set it up via a computer and WIFI and make sure all of the videos are downloaded to the headsets so that once you get to your destination, you won't need WIFI or a computer.   The headsets come with a warning that they are not intended for children under the age of 13.  I don't know why there is such a caveat but guess it could have to do with kids getting all caught up in an experience and running into walls or falling off stairs or balconies.   Jennie wrote:   Hi Howard and Jennifer,  Lisa and I discussed this and are interested in helping with creating a virtual reality program for 4th graders, since Florida is a theme for the common core for that grade.  I would like to know how long this presentation should be and what you want us to do for the next step.   I also would like to create an extension of the virtual reality presentation in the form of a project-based learning lesson that could be used in classrooms to make sure this is seem by the kids as something serious and not just entertainment! The whole point of my original proposal was for kids to have a meaningful experience with an in-depth project so they would remember it share it, and help take action. I hope to continue with this idea, even if it is shared differently.   I wonder if we could have a 4th grade teacher immersion day to help them understand the virtual reality experience and understand how to implement the project. Of course it would have to be limited as we cannot have too many people on the property at once.   With this said, I would not be able to go out to schools as I have so much I am doing in retirement. I do not want to turn this into another school job! Lisa is working as a substitute at schools and may look for a permanent position. We could brainstorm what we might do with this new tool. We would have to consider how this would be shared with schools.  -  Jennie    Howard wrote:   Sorry for slow response, I was jammed and traveling.  You will have to forgive my not being familiar with your profession's lingo but I don't know what a 4th grade teacher immersion day is or a project based learning lesson.  This is NOT intended to be entertainment.  It is intended to educate in a supremely engaging way.   Since the time we met we have made many more videos, I think we have about 50 now, and Lauren has been tasked with helping Carole.  We also even since then have upgraded the headset equipment and our software.  The technology is evolving at a lightning pace.   The challenge in the classroom is that it takes a very powerful computer system to let 20 or more people view the VR video in headsets simultaneously.  That is why we are looking into outfitting a mobile unit.  Friday Susan and I are meeting with a senior person at Lazy Days the big RV dealer to chat about any options they might have.  We need to evolve this as we go, but initially I feel we start with the target of a 20 minute video.     I am guessing that a "project based learning lesson" involves our either having someone in the classroom or teaching teachers.  We have no one to do the former since neither of you can, and have no one to do the latter unless you can.  But, the beauty of creating a VR experience is that it does not require a teacher.  In fact, what is more important is that the person accompanying the vehicle have the tech skills to make sure the equipment functions well.  To the extent we can add a person knowledgeable about the material, and even better with teaching skills, we could add some interactive experience between that person and the students in the mobile vehicle.  But, that is not essential and if done at all it could be done based on when a person is available.  Or, while not envisioned at this time, if we felt there was enough benefit and this became popular enough, we could hire a person to do that. So, a future assignment for you two could be to design that once we have the VR experience up and running.   I would suggest two next steps:   1. We arrange for you both to get with Lauren and have her set you up with the headsets and show you how to access the videos so you can get a better feel of the capabilities and the feeling associated with the experience.  Depending on how much material there is we might arrange for you to take a headset home for a few days.  Much of what we are doing now is along the lines of the viewer sharing the keeper experience.  When you wear the headsets, you are part of the scene.  For instance, it is as if you standing two feet from Nikita's head as she eats, vividly seeing how she takes in the food and chews. And if you turn your head with the headsets on, it is the same as if you were standing there turning your head, so you would see the keeper with you or the rest of the enclosure. 2. Then the big task once you see what can be done with this is for you to basically create a script. It does not have to be a continuous flow of words, there can be pauses while the VR video plays.  What are the criteria for the script?  What comes to my mind is: a) we would want it to meet whatever criteria there are to qualify as education at the level you choose, most likely science education.  I am guessing that the material we are familiar with that is most relevant to this goal is i) conservation information and ii) species information. b) we would like to include some of our basic mission messages: the cats should not be pets, should not be used in entertainment, should be saved in the wild not kept in cages.  We likely have to walk a line here to have the material not be seen as "controversial" nor cause opposition from sources that might still by some be viewed as credible, like AZA zoos.  So the "not kept in cages" might not fit or might have to be done delicately, or the message might be framed as "ideally we should focus on preserving the cats in the wild versus having them on display," a statement that is harder to dispute than saying, for instance, zoos should not exist.  Declawing is another issue. We would want to weave the stories of particular cats into this to make the points memorable, so perhaps Reise is the declaw issue cat. c) I suspect if we do the above we automatically promote BCR, but last on the list that comes to my mind as I type this is to promote the work of Big Cat Rescue, keeping in mind though that we really do not want to promote more school group tours.  We look at this effort to some extent as an alternative to those tours, that is not subject to weather, to whether the cats are out. However, it would be fine to promote more attendance at our kids tours, or if the grade level is ten year olds adult tours, because then we capture the parents. d) And one more that comes to mind as I type this is a "what can you do" element to this that motivates action on the part of the children. Like not attend the circus, not pet tiger cubs, write letters to Congress.   So, that is my stream of consciousness answer to your questions. Carole may have some other thoughts.  Howard Baskin   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Virtual Cats Our vision is a world where all wild cats live free.  If you read the recent article by Howard Baskin it details the amazing strides we are seeing toward that end.  Most notably circuses are ending their wild animal shows all around the world and are banned in many other countries.  Mainstream travel agencies and tourism industries are banning the practice of pimping out cubs for pay to play schemes.  There are so many fashion designers who now oppose the use of fur that you can barely name them all.  Third world countries are closing their zoos because people are realizing that it is cruel to collect or breed wild animals for life in cages.  The gains for protecting big cats are growing exponentially and I take great relief in seeing the light shining so brightly at the end of the tunnel...   With one major exception.  U.S. zoos.  Our federal bill to ban the cruel act of ripping days old cubs from their mothers, just to pimp them out as pay to play props, has stalled in Congress because of zoos and those affiliated with them.  Even the big accredited zoos want huge loopholes in the bill because they use cub petting to lure donors.  They all hide behind the excuse of education for conservation because to call it what it is would get them no support.   I was at a dinner party recently with people who I've know for more than a decade.  I thought they understood our mission.  When one of them said she wanted to take her grand children to the zoo the look on my face must have been obvious because she followed quickly by saying, “I know it's probably not right, but how else am I going to teach my grandkids to appreciate animals?”  Now I was completely dumbstruck.  Howie did a good job of answering with all of the ways that we have at our disposal now, like great documentaries, camera trap photos and scientific insights made by people working in the field who study wild animals.  I just sat there speechless.   I was reeling in the admission, that even though people who go to zoos usually come away feeling like there was something very wrong with wild animals being held captive for their amusement, they still do it because they don't believe their is a viable way to engage their children and teach them about nature.  I thought about the way I've seen inner city children on our tours, who were just as amazed at the ducks, and birds and squirrels who flock to our patch of Eden as they were the cats.     When people come to Big Cat Rescue they are immersed in the beauty of nature but we can only handle about 30,000 visitors a year.  How can we provide that total immersion into the life of exotic cats in such a way that it can be made available for free everywhere?  We have made efforts to create a 360 degree experience since 2015 but the tech has only recently caught up to our vision.  Thanks to recent break throughs in the devices, like Oculus Go, that are now cheap enough for wide adoption by consumers, and platforms like Pixvana, VeeR TV, YouTube and Facebook we are able to immerse millions of people in experiences just like our keepers have.   Until you strap on a head mounted display and watch one of our 50+ videos of our cats up close and purr-sonal, you really can't explain what it feels like to be right next to them,  It's better than seeing them in person because you are closer.  You are acting out the part of their caregiver.  You are totally engaged in their world and perspective.  We are gamifying this experience so that you can choose your own path through the sanctuary and visit the cats you choose when you choose.  Instead of taking your kids to a zoo, to see the big cats trying to pretend you aren't there, you can give your children the chance to really get to know the lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, bobcats and other wild cats at the sanctuary.   I believe that adopting this tech and demanding more such virtual experiences is how zoos will legitimize themselves again.  As they stop the breeding and replace it with truly engaging and interactive experiences, people can go there and not feel guilty about the animal's who had to make the ultimate sacrifice for their limited education.  A zoo in China has already invested millions of dollars to do just that.  You may not remember it, because it started in the 90s, but Big Cat Rescue led the entire zoo industry out of the egregious practice of inbreeding tigers to create white coats.  It took over a decade, but by exposing the cruelty we were able to create so much pressure on zoos they had to abandon the practice of fear loss of their accreditation by AZA.      We are doing the same with 360 video and virtual reality.  We offer a cardboard viewer for just what they cost us, $4.95 so you can get that first experience of being totally immersed in the big cats' world.  We hope that you will be so blown away that you will invest in the more expensive headsets from Oculus or HTC, because it takes all of us, demanding change with our actions, if all wildcats are ever going to live free.  Find out more at BigCatRescue.org/VR   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when Working with Pixvana to Host 360 Videos Dear Linda,   Wow!!! You did a LOT of work putting this together and that is much appreciated.   The main scene would have:   1. 12 Species ports (as you noted w/ 65 cats) 2. 2 Hospital ports - (The Windsong Memorial Hospital for surgeries and the Recovery Hospital for things like baby bobcats who are in for the earliest part of their journey back to the wild) - I have more surgery videos than anything because it's been easy to set a camera in the middle of the action and capture interesting things going on all the way around. 3. Bobcat Rehab - This would be scenes of their rehab after surgery or as they grow big enough to go out to our 4000 sq foot runs and then the releases back to the wild.  We release 4-6 bobcats a year, so I'll always have new content for this. 4. The Trading Post Gift Shop - I'm working on a Google Earth type experience in there 5. Rainbow bridge - Cats live longer here than anywhere else, but 20 of our cats are over the age of 20 which is twice the typical lifespan, so I wanted to have a separate scene to move cats videos after they are gone, if the video was particularly good, or compelling in its narrative.  Because the old cats need a lot of intensive care, such as stick feeding and blood 'cicles to get extra fluids in them, I get better video of them than the ones who just want to trash the camera. 6. Kitten Cabana - Sanctuaries don't breed cats for life in cages, and they don't allow contact with big cats because that makes people want to pet them; which is what drives all of the breeding for cub play opportunities.  Our 100 volunteers and interns LOVE cats though, so we foster domestic cat kittens for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.  Our volunteers socialize these kittens to make them more adoptable, and we get a lot of cute footage of that.  Everyone loves kittens and sometimes there are as many as 30 running wild in the Kitten Cabana.   I realize that the storage capacity of Oculus Go will keep me from being able to host all of what I want, but I think that will increase, and we can add as we go.   I just downloaded all of my current clips in the Tiger Lake Spin and that took up half of my 64 GB space.  I'd really like the one called PSA - BCR to be as high quality as possible, if you can increase the resolution on that one.   Thank you for the links.  I was already part of the 360 Insta group and have applied to the Professionals group.  Oculus says the Rift has shipped, so I'm looking forward to our meeting Wed. at 4PM ET.   Linda Nguyen wrote:   Hi Carole,   Thank you for your time this afternoon. We're super excited for your event on November 3, 2018.   Based on our phone conversation, you would like to build out an interactive experience for your sanctuary with the following structure that is similar to the veer.tv listed here and the information I found on your website.   Home/Main Video Point of Entry (she listed all the cats by name and species)   Hospital   All scenes will have a return hyperport to home, to secondary landing page ( species, hospital and etc...) and/or to see a nearby enclosure.   This is a rough draft from our initial call today. To help our call go by smoothly next week, I will need your help to fill out the following details:   On the main video, how many categories, this includes Species, Hospital, and any area of the preserve would you like to connect. If you were to include all of the experiences based on the species, of the big cats themselves, and facilities, there will be least 81 unique scenes. We have a confirmed meeting for next Wednesday at 4PM EST to go through  the SPIN Creator Tools as well.   Before I forget to send it to you, here are the FB groups I have found really helpful in the past as I have started to make my own 360 video experiences as well.   https://www.facebook.com/groups/Insta360Community/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/360.video.professionals/   I hope this helps. 360 Video Promotion Last week Howie and I went to the Dali Museum to see the 360 display Jen Leon had told us about.  It was 3 chairs, in front of 3 screens, powered by 3 Alienware computers.  I think the headsets were Oculus but they may have been HTC Vives.  They had people lined up about 15 deep when the door opened to see a 3 minute virtual reality game type experience of one of Dali's paintings.  You could zoom around from one perspective to another along w/ sound effects, changing lighting, etc.  We paid almost 70.00 to visit the museum, just to see what this 360 VR set up looked like.   After watching countless reviews and reading lots of articles I purchased the HTV Vive Pro and the Oculus Go, which just came out on May 1.  I've asked Randall Munsters if he can upgrade our iMacs to run the Pro and the Go is completely untethered but it only has a 2 hour battery life.    I woke up this morning, thanking God for all the blessings I've experienced lately, such as an animal protection NGO in Guatemala crediting my 2011 video of the Circos Rey Gitano for being the deciding factor in their congress banning circus acts that use wild animals.   Now we are working with those in Guatemala to rescue the 50-70 lions and tigers that have been abandoned by the circuses there.   During the prayer, I received the divine inspiration to capitalize on this 360 craze with URLs that would redirect to our content.  That would make it easier for us to send people to those videos without having to say, “Go to YouTube.com/BigCatRescue or YouTube.com/DailyBigCat and then search for our 360 playlist...”  I sent the following email to LaWanna.Mitchell, Afton.Tasler and Brittany.Mira:   360 footage is getting a huge boost on Facebook due to them putting out the Oculus Go at $199.00 which finally makes it affordable for most homes.  We are getting 5-6 times more views on 360 on FB right now over flat video.   To capitalize on that I bought these URLs:   360cat.tv points to a list of our Facebook 360 videos   360bigcat.com points to our main YouTube playlist of 360 videos   360bigcats.com points to our DailyBigCat YouTube playlist of 360 videos   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Today's guest got his start in the world of game development. But soon, Arash Keshmirian saw the writing on the wall that XR's current usefulness was better-suited to the worlds of industry, retail, and journalism. Arash and Alan discuss how he made that transition. Alan: Hey, everyone, it's Alan Smithson here, the host of the XR for Business podcast. Today we have Arash Keshmirian, co-founder of Extality. His personal goal is to create powerful content that delivers results. We're going to dig into using Magic Leap and Hololens and mixed reality headsets as a tool for business. So all that and more, coming up next on the XR for Business podcast. Arash, welcome to the show, my friend. Arash: Thank you for having me. Great to be here. Alan: It's my absolute pleasure. You guys have done some pretty cool stuff. I was on your website playing with a shoe. What is Extality? Arash: Were a lot of things to many people. So we built Extality out of a long, 10 year experience in the games industry, building mobile games. Did a lot of games, including Zombie Gunship, which ended up being this kind of worldwide sensation of shooting zombies from an airplane. That company -- Limbic -- we ended up doing a lot of XR stuff. And kind of around 2016, 17, 18 we built a game for ARKit, called Zombie Gunship Revenant. And that ended up being a huge hit across the app store. Apple featured it a whole bunch of times. It was one of the 2017 games of the year. And it spread ARKit to a lot of people, trying new things on their new iPhones. And we later did a project called Zombie Guns Raptor with Oculus and Oculus Go, Gear VR. But really kind of around that time -- 2017 -- we started to feel like it was getting way too crowded in the games business, and we were starting to look around and try to figure out what we could do with our experience in high-performance graphics and making cool experiences, immersive experiences. I started talking to a guy named Ryan Peterson, who's the founder of a CEO called Finger Food out in Vancouver. And he was telling me about all these exciting opportunities in AR and VR for enterprises. He was talking about how they'd saved millions and millions of dollars for a truck company that was looking to move their design to virtual reality from using clay models. And this got our head scratching, we were like, "You know, maybe there's an opportunity to use all of our games experience, to help big companies and do more than just give people an entertaining hour on their phones." So we founded a new company called Extality. And we set out to essentially discover companies that really wanted to explore XR, be it on their phones, on headsets, iPods -- every type of XR -- and leverage our background in doing just really hard graphics problems, building scalable global servers and connectivity, all those hard things that you learn how to do making games, we quickly realized that we're super, super applicable to building enterprise solutions as well. Alan: Actually, I know Ryan very well from Finger Food, really great guy. And they've done some amazing work in the space. What are some of the highlights that you've done for enterprise? And first of all, I just want to say that having a flying zombie shooter game? Pretty awesome. Arash: [chuckles] Thank you. Alan: The fact you guys had a hit with ARKit is pretty amazing, because there's not too much out there leveraging the power of ARKit yet. Arash: Yeah. I mean, if you want to talk about games for just a second, it's an interesting thing. I mean, it gives people a totally different experience using their phone as the controller and running around the room. We have all these videos during our user tests

Animator Chance Glasco is famous for his work on video games, most notably the Call of Duty Franchise. His newest venture, Doghead Simulations, is using Virtual Reality to replace and improve conference calls, video calls, and screen sharing. Imagine being worlds apart, yet able to meet together face to face, sharing data and information in real-time, through a virtual reality environment that works across a variety of platforms and operating systems. TRANSCRIPT: Intro: 0:01 Inventors and their inventions. Welcome to Radio Cade the podcast from the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention in Gainesville, Florida , the museum is named after James Robert Cade, who invented Gatorade in 1965. My name is Richard Miles. We’ll introduce you to inventors and the things that motivate them, we’ll learn about their personal stories, how their inventions work, and how their ideas get from the laboratory to the marketplace. James Di Virgilio: 0:38 I’m James de Virgilio in for Richard Miles . And today I get a chance to talk with a rather famous, and I heard you said this in a podcast Chance, a famous, but maybe not famous on the street, developer who’s now doing some really interesting things. His name is Chance Glasco. He’s sitting down with me here at the Cade Museum, and we’re going to talk about a couple of things today, a Chance. Let me give you your bio. You’re the Co-founder of Infinity War, that’s what you’re famous for, which produced Call of Duty and the really good Call of Duty games. I think it’s important to say in there , and then you are now the Co – founder since 2016 of Doghead Simulations. And we’re going to spend quite a bit of time talking about this today. What, first of all, why start Doghead? You were in Brazil for a while . You had kind of given yourself a little mental space. Why come back with this project? Chance Glasco: 1:25 So after , um, 13 years of Call of Duty, 15 years of the game industry, I was just burned out. As you probably heard. The game industry is a lot of hours, a lot of crunching late nights. Yeah. They feed you, but you’re there 12 hours a day, sometimes six days a week, and whatnot, it just kind of takes a toll on you. And you, you know, at a certain point, doesn’t matter how much someone pays you. If you can’t enjoy your life, what does it matter? Right. And so I guess I kind of pulled like a Dave Chappelle in a sense , right. I just kind of left the country and went to another place, which was Brazil , uh, lived there for , uh , overall, I close to three years, about two years in Rio and then , uh, six months or so, and , um , San Paulo and , uh , yeah , just enjoyed it and just kind of relaxed, recovered, and started working on a VR project remotely with a buddy of mine, Albert Perez, who’s another Co – founder of Doghead. He was in Seattle, I was in Rio and we were working on this game called Bear Tinder. And it was actually a , um, animal bartending game. You’re in virtual reality, you’re a bear. And then animals come in and they order drinks and you actually reach behind you, grab the bottle, you know, and grab everything, start mixing stuff, get points, serve them. And eventually ended up with just this crazy drunk animal bar. So like, why am I not doing a drunk animal game now? Well, investors, would probably be the correct answer, right? You’re a money guy. So, you know, like if someone came to you, with the background of Call of Duty is like, Hey, I’ve got this great idea. You can get drunk with a goat and a chinchilla in VR, or, Hey, I’ve got this idea that can revolutionize communication education. Like the investors are going to go with the second choice, most likely. James Di Virgilio: 2:55 That’s for sure. So you were working on something very creative and fun. Chance Glasco: 2:58 Yeah, something as far as from Call of Duty as I can get basically. James Di Virgilio: 3:02 And now it’s morphed into something a little more serious, a little bit more professional, more buttoned up maybe? Chance Glasco: 3:06 So, the segue from that was , uh , we were collaborating and I think we were initially using Skype and, you know , um, Skype is not, I don’t know how Skype managed to get worse over the years, but we were very frustrated and it wasn’t just the software itself. It’s just that we had I had five megabit down internet, you know, I was like two streets from a favela. It was not like this, you know , broadband one gigabit experience I was having , um , you know , uh, there’s a lot less bandwidth used if we did this in VR. Cause the video uses a lot of bandwidth. But in, in VR, if you’re in a social situation while we’re sending audio, just like you would on a video conference call. But instead of saying video, we’re sending the XYZ coordinates of your hands and your head. Cause that’s all being tracked. And then applying that to an avatar. And so not only did it solve our bandwidth issues, it was just a much better experience for conferencing remotely. You get in there and in good VR, actually, most of you are now , uh, we’ve gotten to the point where you’ve experienced presence. It’s a sense of actually being somewhere, you put this thing on your head, your subconscious mind buys into it. Your conscious mind knows you’re in VR, right? And so we were like, wow. Or I feel like I’m here with you. Like we’re hanging out in VR. You feel their presence, social presence enters the equation. Once you network other people in there. And they’re like, well, now that we’re hanging out and we’re talking, wouldn’t it be cool if we could like, you know, maybe bring up a PDF or think of a 3D model that we’re working on for the game or something. Um, and so the tool that was fixing our collaboration issues ended up being a product kind of classic story. James Di Virgilio: 4:35 That is a classic story . That’s what I was thinking. As I heard you say, this is, so you just try to solve a problem you had with your Co-founder and then you stumbled upon what is now the primary development piece for, for your studio. The first thing that came to mind for me was what you just said is have done VR before. I have a hard time having my subconscious buy into it. I recognize him in a , in an environment that seems a little bit blurry or it seems a little bit weird and I’m doing things in there. But to hear you say that it’s tracking movements that you actually felt like you were able to read the mannerisms of your Co – founders seems amazing. It seems to transformational. Are you finding that the marketplace desire or something like this for a video conferencing solution? Or is this a hard , a high hurdle to overcome? Chance Glasco: 5:16 I mean, this is something that the market demands, but they don’t know they demand it yet or they do. They just don’t know what it is. They just know that they don’t like video conferencing. But think about like, like Henry Ford, I don’t know exact quote, but something like, “If I would ask people what they wanted , they would’ve said a faster horse.” People like , Oh , want better video conferencing. This isn’t very good. You don’t like video conferencing, not because, Oh , it’s pixelated or you don’t like, because you’re not there with them. It doesn’t matter how good you make video conferencing. You’re still looking at a set of boxes on a screen. And that screen might fill , you know, 30% of your field of view . And then you’re like, well, who’s talking, I don’t know all this people. Let me look at, Oh, that person’s mouth is moving while the audio is coming out. Okay. So I guess they’re talking right. Well in VR, if like, let’s say this was Rumi , right? This is our software we’ve met we’re in this environment. This is the 3D rendering. If I’m looking off to the right and I hear you talk, I’m going to hear you out. I’m sorry if I’m looking to the right. Uh , and I hear you talk, I’m going to turn my head left because I heard you out of my left ear. I know you’re to the left of me. Right. That’s natural. That’s what we’re used to experiencing. It doesn’t happen via conferencing. You’re just scanning like this little boxed area of who’s talking, right. Body language. You don’t really get that in , um , in video conferencing. Um, yeah, you can see like their upper body, but there’s no depth. You don’t get everything below that. And it just doesn’t really translate. And so when you’re in VR, people typically will just kind of circle up if they’re in a group, just like you would in real life, like a semicircular circle. When they’re talking, I can see multiple people this way, this person talks, I can turn my head left. You know? So it’s just, we’re basically, we’ve recreated that in person experience using VR. James Di Virgilio: 6:49 It’s , it’s a couple of interesting things. One, you just mentioned that sort of circle, which I think whenever I come out of a movie, people tend to form a circle and you discuss the movie, like it’s the natural human. This is how, and you’re seeing people naturally in the VR world where they could go anywhere they want, right. They can take their avatar and turn away from you, but they don’t, they’re actually forming the same social formation you’d form in the flesh. Chance Glasco: 7:12 You’re utilizing 3D space. Video conferencing, it’s just a 2D panel in front of you, you know? And so when you utilize 3D space, you can do more of it . James Di Virgilio: 7:20 I think one of the most interesting things that I, that I read that you had , um, you had said, and I think this is totally true, is when you put the VR headset on, you’re not distracted and with video conferencing or conference calls, I think anyone listening to this podcast knows that you’re on mute or you’re typing an email or you’re browsing the internet and you’re half listening, but the VR set is fully immersive. So you’re actually in the space with the person, much like you would be one on one. Chance Glasco: 7:45 Yeah. There was actually a study from source enter call that I realized that 70% of people in video conferencing are doing something completely different. And at least one of the things , and it was emailing, it was texting, it was playing games, going into the bathroom, like all kinds of stuff. Right? So when you’re in VR and a hundred percent of your reality is being rendered. It’s not like AR where you’re rendering, you know , 3D over the real world. You’re completely blocked out to the real world. And so, and you had headphones and you’ve got headphones on. Right? And so, because of that, you know, you’re not, if I reached in and grab my phone, and get my phone out I’m not going to see my arm. I’m not going to see my hand. I’ll see my 3D avatar hand, but I’m not going to have a phone in it because that’s in the real world. Right? So it’s just a much better way to focus. And especially when with school, like if you think about online school, I don’t know if you’ve done any online classes, but people don’t have like memories. They don’t reminisce about online school. Hey, remember that time I typed that funny joke and hit enter, and then you type ha ha ha ha. And hit enter. Hell yeah. That was hilarious. Like you never have you ever , never have conversations about the online school, but what if you’re in a , what if your friends is what Harvard is doing? Harvard is using our software to teach Egyptology to Harvard students. And , um, I , uh , university in China. So you have Chinese students and Harvard students in a Egyptian pyramid, a 3D model and different pyramid with the PhD in Egyptology teaching them. They’re gonna remember that. They’re not going to remember the video of the guy talking and the text chat, you know? James Di Virgilio: 9:13 Yeah. You’re absolutely right. I took a lot of online courses at the University of Florida. And then just remember maybe a weird thing the professor did, but there’s no collaborative field. Chance Glasco: 9:22 It’s kinda de-humanized. James Di Virgilio: 9:23 Yeah. It is. It’s a guy on a screen talking that’s that’s fascinating. So they actually feel this. So Harvard is , is presumably one of your? Chance Glasco: 9:31 Yeah, Harvard, Full Sail University, Michigan, I’m sorry. University of Michigan, Wolverines? Yeah. I don’t sometimes there’s like, you know , it was like Florida State can say let’s just rearrange state’s names and the word state into five different colleges and expect you to remember their names. James Di Virgilio: 9:48 So, so your technology is potentially changing the landscape of video conferencing and allowing for an immersive, almost realistic experience anywhere across the world? Chance Glasco: 9:56 Yeah. I wouldn’t say, I said replacing rather than changing, you know , it’s like for instance, we had, you know, we have the first to telegram right? Then like a phone call and then we had , um, you know, audio conferencing and video conferencing. But for the history of human beings, we’ve been communicating from a very complex exchange of facial expressions, body language. Um, there’s all these little details that come together. And when we’re having a conversation , uh , my little shots of either serotonin and dopamine are coming from your little micro reactions in your face, you’re nodding your head, these things. So we’ve basically for the sake of convenience , um, you know, over pretty much during your , um, your lifetime in my lifetime have stripped away all of those human aspects of communication for the sake of convenience. Right? And so what we can do with the VR technology is we can actually rehumanize social media, you know, where we’ve got your body language , um, the new headsets , uh, the new Vive Pro Eye has eye tracking and that’ll probably be a standard feature in the future for most headsets. So now we have like how you’re moving and what exactly like what exactly you’re looking at. You know, just having one to one eye movement in VR , I have an avatar that’s the eyes are moving, how the real person’s moving. That adds emotion that has empathy. And so we’re kind of fooling your brain in a sense to feel. I mean , I don’t know if fooling is the right word where we’re just transferring more of those human aspects into your digital environment. So to give a sense of empathy. James Di Virgilio: 11:16 Now, is anyone else doing this? Is this is this patent protected and how, where are we in that ? Chance Glasco: 11:21 I mean, you can’t, you know, you can’t really patent protect the idea of people being networked in VR, you know , and that in itself is not necessarily a completely unique idea. I mean, we’ve had network games for awhile , but most of the companies that have are known are focusing more on the social, social aspect, not this, like we’re a private invite kind of system like Slack, right? You’re going to get to create a team and you invite people via email. Um , you’ve got other companies that are more of like an AOL chat room. I’m like in the early days we were just going in there and you’re talking to people I’m just more focused on some entertainment. And we realized there was a , a gap of like, Hey, what if you want to be productive? What if you want to get drunk together and actually be productive rather than just be like, Hey, where are you from? You know, that stuff, you can do that in Rumi, but you have to be invited to that team to speak to someone. James Di Virgilio: 12:05 And Rumi is the name? The actual application? Chance Glasco: 12:08 Yeah. Are you MII? Um , in Doghead Simulations is our company name dogheadsimulations.com is our website. But if you, I recommend if you’re gonna get Rumi, get it off of steam because there’s an auto updater. If not, you can go to our website and get it. And it’s free. It’s free up to five users. And so pretty much any small project can use it without paying anything. James Di Virgilio: 12:28 And this works on a wide variety of VR headsets and it also works on non-VR. Chance Glasco: 12:32 So we worked with work on pretty much every PC and Mac made in the last five years for non-VR mode. Uh, we support every major PC, VR headset, you know, the vibe, the Oculus, everything that’s steam, VR, everything, windows, all the windows headsets. And we also support the Oculus Go and the newest head site , which the museum just purchased a bunch of was Oculus Quest. And that’s what I’m really recommending for people right now. It’s not the most high fidelity headset because you’re, you’re not tethered to a PC. It’s basically a cell phone processor that’s in there, but it’s, there’s no wires and it’s easy to use. You put it on. It goes, it’s an amazing experience for $399. You didn’t pick them at best buy once they’re in stock again. But that’s the one that I think is really going to break through. It just came out like two weeks ago, maybe three. It’s a really, I think take VR into the mainstream. James Di Virgilio: 13:16 A couple of years from now, if we look back on this conversation and this time period, what would you like to see Doghead Simulations accomplish? Chance Glasco: 13:22 Yeah. There’s a lot of things I’d like to see. For instance, you could , you know, you can record your screen and have a video of a meeting, but imagine if we actually recorded your position in space, your body language, what you’re doing, all the audio, you could actually revisit a VR meeting almost like the time machine. You go into that environment. And all the avatars are playing back exactly what people were doing, what they’re saying, what they’re interacting with. And that’s cool because I imagine like, Oh, I missed that meeting, you know, last month, let me just go back into it. It’s exactly the same experience they would have with exception that if you talk to these people who quote unquote, they’re not going to respond because they’re basically recordings at this point. James Di Virgilio: 13:57 That’s amazing. I’m really looking forward to using the technology I played around on your website. And I know beforehand, as we, as we wrap up the show, we want to talk a little bit about your background. You and I both had played some baseball and I heard on a different podcast. You talked about wanting to be a baseball player or an astronaut. And instead you wound up going down this path of developing, you know, one of the most famous games of all time, one of the most popular games of all time. And now you’re working on this. I know that no one’s success path is linear. It’s not a , it’s not a bottle rocket of success, not a rock show success. Tell me a little bit about what it was like for you coming through these different dreams you had and realities you had and going to Full Sail and kind of, what did that look like? What does your picture look like? What’s the story of Chance? Chance Glasco: 14:38 I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I ended up well, it’s complicated. Technically I was kidnapped to Florida and missing for several years. But that’s a whole other podcast, but I ended up staying in Florida in the end. Um, and , uh, I went to Full Sail University. I , um, I’m a graduate of Satellite Beach High School, a class of 99′ of Satellite Beach , uh, spent most of my childhood in Brevard County , uh, Titusville, Cocoa and, you know, Indian Harbor all at that area. And then , um, I find out about Full Sail. I was like, Oh, this is a really cool school. It’s different. So I went of there, checked it out, I was like, I definitely didn’t go here. Didn’t have any money. Took about 40 grand in loans out to cover living expenses and school and all that stuff. I graduated 15, 16 months later, get an internship working at 2015 on Medal of Honor Allied Assault. And then that was successful that we didn’t like we work for. So 22 of those 30 people left, we started Infinity War and had to create a franchise that would compete with Medal of Honor, which we ended up calling Call of Duty. So that’s a , and then that kind of segues into what we talked about earlier is 13 years of that. But the success thing it’s like, it kind of just creeps up. You know, it’s like after when a Call of Duty one came out, no one heard of the franchise, cause it didn’t exist before they just need some Medal of Honor people made a new game. And so that was ended up like at first, not very popular, but because the reviews were so high people started buying it and they just hadn’t heard of it. And then multiplayer kind of made it stick and then Call of Duty two ee had Microsoft ask us to make a launch title for the Xbox 360. So that doubled our sales because we’re now on two systems PC and in 360 and then Cod Four broke us into like basically we’re up there with a Halo and GTA when it comes to sales and then buy Call of Duty, Modern Warfare two. It was, we were beating an Avatar, the box office, you know, so we went from, you know, one of the top three game franchises to , uh , biggest grossing entertainment franchise in probably that decade or somthing so. James Di Virgilio: 16:28 Which is just simply amazing. And here you are with me at the Cade Museum having a conversation and what you’ve had, like you said, many of these conversations, and one last question for you, Chance, if you could go back and tell your, your first entrepreneurial self, so you leave the company you’re working for, you start a infinity , what would you give yourself as a word of wisdom? What would you say, Hey, you’re going to have all the success and things are gonna happen to you, but you kind of anchor to this. What would you tell your previous self? Chance Glasco: 16:53 It sounds really good. Seemingly really good opportunities come along , um, and be careful with it , what your , your choices are. You know, it’s kind of like, you know, someone gets offered, what they think is like a really good record deal. They’re like, Oh wow, we got a record deal or whatever. And then they realize , you know, two years down the road that they were kind of blinded by the fact that there is a record deal and thought, you know, it’s magic or something and made some bad decisions. Maybe, maybe they should have waited for a different record company. Right? I don’t know that’s too cryptic, but? James Di Virgilio: 17:21 Maybe patience with not every opportunity. Chance Glasco: 17:25 Patience, yeah like sometimes when you get some amazing opportunity, that’s the first of many amazing ones and that’s not even the best one, but there are times where you do have to take that. I guess sometimes you look back and say, I should have done that. James Di Virgilio: 17:35 Sure. And there’s no, there’s no, I think your story illustrates what so many others illustrate. Is there’s no perfect path. You can’t make every right decision. Chance Glasco: 17:42 Yeah, yeah. Something that I think will resonate with you when I talk to students a lot, like when I do a lot of talks at Full Sail or universities is especially as I’m talking to usually game developers, people that are like that, you know, a lot of people don’t realize that if, if they’re not active, if they’re not exercising and eating healthy that their brain is not going to function like it should, you know, they’re going to like, Oh, I got to put down another Coca-Cola for my brain. It’d be home , you know, functioning. Right? And so something that I got really into when I was like, it was 2010, I got really into Brazilian jujitsu from watching MMA. And so I would end up going to the lunchtime to train. And it’s like, as a game developer, you’re behind a computer, you’re basically not moving for, you know , 10 hours a day or so. And so you kind of have to balance that with an extreme opposite. And so for me, I found that when I was putting myself in a situation where basically someone’s trying to choke me or break my arm or something, not quiet , you know, you , you know, that’s not going to happen, but you’re trying to get someone trying to put you to that point. Right? That it was so opposite to what I was used to, that it was like, this it’s extremely good balance. Like , yeah, I could have just gone out and gone running, but it wasn’t different enough from sitting in front of a computer. I needed something to really push me . And so also jujitsu, it’s very, it’s creative, it’s very technical. There’s a lot of problem solving. It’s not just brainless and I’m not, you know , attacking other martial arts, like just, you know , striking tons and tons of times over and over repetition. There’s a lot of variety within it. So , uh, that’s, that’s kept me kind of sane through that sitting in front of a computer. And so anyone that even like for me, I grew up a computer nerd, you know, I was programming when I was 14, I was a dork. I was kind of like, you know, into theater and like, you know, not athletic person at all, I still am not. But even if you’re not like find something to balance that desk life, because it’ll, it’ll make you a happier person and it’ll prove your life and other ways too. James Di Virgilio: 19:27 I think that’s why it’s Harvard did a study talking about the different things our brains need each day. And one of them is exercise and others music. But especially if you’re an entrepreneur and you’re spending so much time on one task , it’s essential that your brain gets other space to do things. And something like jujitsu, is deep. You can go very far into that. You can lose yourself into that. And that makes a lot of sense. And I think that’s wise , he is Chance Glasgow. He is the Co-founder of Doghead Simulations. I’ve had so much fun spending some time with you today on behalf of Radio Cade on behalf of Richard Miles, who’s not here doing the interview today. I’m James Di Virgilio. I look forward to talking with you next time. Chance Glasco: 20:01 Thank you guys. Outro: 20:04 Radio Cade would like to thank the following people for their help and support, Liz Gist of the Cade museum for coordinating and vendor interviews. Bob McPeak of Heartwood Soundstage in downtown Gainesville, Florida for recording, editing and production of the podcasts and music theme. Tracy Collins for the composition and performance of the Radio Cade theme song, featuring violinist, Jacob Lawson and special, thanks to the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention located in Gainesville, Florida.
