In this high-energy crossover episode of Mind Yo' Business, recorded in the Ruoff Mortgage Podcast Studio in partnership with Karan Rastall (NMLS#763395), Andrew welcomes the dynamic duo behind the popular music podcast Into the Run Out—John Nelson and Anthony Nasella—for a mic-sharing session that blends business, broadcasting, and rock and roll.   John and Anthony discuss how Into the Run Out began as a passion project rooted in their lifelong love of music and their curiosity about how albums shape identity and influence culture.   Rather than interviewing artists or covering concerts, the show focuses on deep dives into classic and modern rock albums—breaking down the music, lyrics, and production, while reflecting on how those songs impacted their own lives and might shape the work of future artists.   Together, the trio explores the crossover between creativity and entrepreneurship, why consistency matters in content creation, and how storytelling (whether through music or media) can amplify both culture and commerce.   Of course, there's also plenty of talk about Bloomington, memorable gigs, podcast misfires, and the beauty of pushing "record" even when you don't know where the conversation is headed.   Whether you're into the business of branding, band promotion, or just love a good collaboration, this episode hits all the right notes.   https://www.youtube.com/@IntotheRunout     Podcast Studio Sponsor Podcast Sponsor   Podcast Sponsor Podcast Sponsor   Episode 7-12 Sponsor       Episode 7-12 Sponsor

Come to a Dehoarding Accountability Zoom Session: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/ticket Subscribe to the podcast: https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/subscribe Podcast show notes, links and transcript: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/  Today I'm talking about why letting yourself make mistakes - like running out of everyday items or doing things imperfectly - can actually help if you're struggling with hoarding. From challenging perfectionism to rethinking the fear of scarcity, I'll share how embracing messiness can move us forward. Plus, I'll offer practical ideas for easing those fears and making progress, one small, imperfect step at a time. Announcement of new dates for Dehoarding Accountability Zoom Sessions. Aimed at connecting people who hoard for conversation and simultaneous decluttering. Details on how to get tickets and availability through several upcoming months. The Value of Making Mistakes Challenging the idea of perfection and fear of making mistakes. Proposing the benefits of allowing oneself to: Make more mistakes. Run out of things occasionally. Do things imperfectly or “half-arsed.” Identifying how fear of mistakes and perfectionism can keep people stuck in hoarding behaviours. Perfectionism and Fear of Scarcity Perfectionism: Fear of making the “wrong” decision leads to inaction or keeping everything. Uncertainty about the future and anxiety about discarding items. All-or-nothing thinking: If it can't be done perfectly, it's not worth starting. Personal reflection on the struggle with perfectionist tendencies. Fear of Scarcity: “Keep it just in case” mentality. Stemming from past experiences of poverty or deprivation. How personal history and upbringing foster scarcity-based behaviours. Recognition that such fears can be irrational and still hold significant power. How this fear leads to over-acquisition and reluctance to discard. Addressing Perfectionism and Scarcity (Mindset Shifts) Techniques to gently challenge perfectionism and scarcity fears. Reframing mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures. Allowing for experimentation as a method of progress. Embracing Mistakes as a Path Forward Learning from mistakes as a source of growth and behaviour change. Normalising occasional regrets over discarding or not acquiring something. Comparing the cost of keeping everything versus the occasional “mistake.” Observing emotional responses to mistakes as a way to learn and build decision-making confidence. Encouragement to start with low-risk decisions and build up “dehoarding muscle” gradually. Allowing Things to be Done Imperfectly Encouragement to “do things badly” rather than waiting for perfect execution. “Done is better than perfect” as a motivating principle. The danger of all-or-nothing thinking leading to perpetual inaction. Practical examples of doing small tasks imperfectly: Tackling a small part of a larger problem (e.g., half a shelf). Donating a partial bag of items. Taking any step forward, even imperfect ones, counts as progress. Allowing Yourself to Run Out of Things Creative and resourceful solutions arise when supplies run low. Examples from daily life (cooking, art journalling) where scarcity breeds creativity. Differentiates between essential items and those where running out is an acceptable risk. Suggestions for consciously assessing what's truly necessary to keep in stock. Experimental Mindset: Treating Dehoarding as Data Collection Each decision - successful or not - provides valuable data for future choices. Building confidence and capability for bigger, more challenging decluttering decisions over time. Summary and Reinforcement of Key Points Allow for imperfection, mistakes, and occasional scarcity. Importance of starting with manageable steps and celebrating imperfect progress. “Done is better than perfect”—taking action, however small, is crucial. It has been more than a minute since our last episode. Over here at The High Route, there has been a bit of burying our heads in the sand as we focus on sending out our final proofs for our print version of The High Route. In the spirit of print, we have Michael Levy as our guest on the podcast. Levy is the driving force behind the resurrection of Summit Journal—an esteemed print magazine last printed in 1996. The history of Summit Journal is pretty fascinating, and Levy speaks about that legacy in more detail on The Run Out. If you do not read or subscribe to Summit Journal and enjoy climbing-related stories, we suggest you try it. Levy has combined his keen editor's sensibilities to produce a large-format magazine that borders on art. No matter how you approach it, Levy's vision has moved the needle positively regarding print offerings in the adventure scene. Joining Levy is the regular host and our THR mainstay based in Anchorage, Alaska, Alex Lee. The conversation is part self-serving; we have a ton to learn from folks like Levy as we go into the deep end with our print venture. If you are new to The High Route, we are a reader and listener-supported enterprise focusing on human-powered turn making. Our mission is simple, but it takes real deal calorie burning to piece it all together. We are also excited to announce Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is in the works. Fancy paper. Good reads. High-octane photos. And some fine mountain ranges. And turns. You can learn more about our subscription options here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with. Thanks for listening,The High Route Team

The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she speaks with Ross Barkan, contributing writer at New York Magazine and columnist at Crain's New York, to discuss his recent piece published in The Nation entitled "Is Eric Adams's Luck About to Run Out?" First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's attacks on civilians in Lebanon, the UN General Assembly's overwhelming vote to end Israel's military presence in Gaza and the West Bank, reporting on Biden's weapons transfers, the uncommitted movement, the teamsters' lack of a presidential endorsement, swing state polling, New York State's Democratic Party problem, the Fed, Russian offensives in Ukraine, Beshear's conversion therapy ban, and dropping overdose rates in the US, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the developing story of Israel's en-masse attack of Lebanese citizens (Hezbollah or not) via the use of rigged communications technologies. Emma is then joined by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James as they outline why they chose Cambodia for the focus of the fifth season of Blowback, unpacking its role as a central (and emblematic) node in the constellation of US intervention in Southeast Asia during the Cold War. Expanding on this, Kulwin and James dive into the complex cast of characters that dominate this season, first tackling the Nixon-Kissinger paring that set the blueprint for the entire thing, first sabotaging Vietnam peace negotiations in 1968 to help ensure a GOP victory, before centering a strategy of “Peace with Honor,” by which Nixon meant a shift to more expansive bombing campaigns, and immediately expanding said campaign by pushing Cambodian Royal Norodom Sihanouk to embrace a US carpet bombing campaign on his country (not war, totally not war), all while hiding the entire campaign behind a dual reporting system, separate books, and direct, behind-the-scenes communications between the White House and relevant parties. Shifting focus to Cambodia, Noah and Brendan parse through the Khmer Rouge's origins as an auxiliary, socialist-aligned force with the North Vietnamese (the basis for Nixon's carpet bombing), only to help launch a full-scale Civil War in the wake of the US-backed deposition of Sihanouk by South Vietnam in 1970, resulting in years of bloodshed (increased by ongoing US bombings) that saw the Khmer Rouge gain more and more territory and power, until the formerly-small-guerilla movement successfully sacked the capital city of Phnom Penh, launching five years of forced labor, full-scale genocide and the extermination of ethnic minorities, refugee crises, mass executions and more under the rule of Pol Pot. Continuing, James and Kulwin move into the breakdown of Cambodian society under the brutal regime of Pol Pot and expanding conflict as the Khmer Rouge turned against the North Vietnamese government that had supported them (in part due to the Khmer Rouge's budding relationship with the US and the West), resulting in said government launching a full-scale invasion of Cambodia, getting rid of Pol Pot and establishing a friendly regime, all to the condemnation of the West that had been peacefully watching Cambodians die for nearly a decade. After briefly expanding on the mythology tying the Khmer Rouge's rule to the greater Soviet movement and the obvious failures of said narrative when you look into who was actually supporting the regime, Emma, Brendan and Noah jump to the modern period, unpacking the symbiotic nature of a fully-capitalist Cold War between the US and China, and what that has meant for Cambodian development over the last decade, wrapping up the interview by running through the final figures on the mass deaths from US carpet bombing (100-150k), the US-backed Civil War (300-500k), and the following Cambodian Genocide (1.7m). Ross Barkan and Emma then dive right into the overwhelming cloud of corruption around NYC Mayor Eric Adams, including FOUR federal investigations ranging from domestic to foreign corruption, and the correlating complete incompetence of his governance, with Barkan comparing his administration to a Tammany Hall that didn't actually deliver anything to the people. After briefly expanding on the role an overwhelmingly unpopular New York Democratic Party is having on races up and down the ballot, Ross and Emma tackle the particulars of Adams' corrupt relationship with the NYPD and its deadly impact. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack North Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Nominee Mark Robinson's odd sermon on the ability to take and make life with one's genitalia, JD Vance's continuing commitment to racist conspiracy, and Ryan Grim's cathartic shutdown of Matt Walsh's absurd anti-Haitian bigotry. #RafiFarber - Spare Dollars Are About to Run Out, And the Fed Does Not Care The Federal Reserve is very confused about what might happen when all the extra money from the last printing spree finally runs out. There are now some $600B left. Some, like New York Fed head John Williams and Fed Governor Chris Waller say nothing much will happen so chill out. However, Dallas Fed head Lorie Logan thinks it could cause some serious problems. The fact is, almost $2 trillion have poured in to the money supply from the ON RRP facility since 2023, and despite this mighty vigorous flow, the money supply has nevertheless shrunk. Logically, that means when the source of the inflow dries up, the tectonic deflationary forces now ravishing the money supply from high interest will no longer be masked. Then, of course, the Fed is going to have to print like hell. And gold and silver are going to explode like never before. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Report on Frontier Model Training, published by YafahEdelman on August 31, 2023 on LessWrong. Understanding what drives the rising capabilities of AI is important for those who work to forecast, regulate, or ensure the safety of AI. Regulations on the export of powerful GPUs need to be informed by understanding of how these GPUs are used, forecasts need to be informed by bottlenecks, and safety needs to be informed by an understanding of how the models of the future might be trained. A clearer understanding would enable policy makers to target regulations in such a way that they are difficult for companies to circumvent with only technically compliant GPUs, forecasters to avoid focus on unreliable metrics, and technical research working on mitigating the downsides of AI to understand what data models might be trained on. This doc is built from a collection of smaller docs I wrote on a bunch of different aspects of frontier model training I consider important. I hope for people to be able to use this document as a collection of resources, to draw from it the information they find important and inform their own models. I do not expect this doc to have a substantial impact on any serious AI labs capabilities efforts - I think my conclusions are largely discoverable in the process of attempting to scale AIs or for substantially less money than a serious such attempt would cost. Additionally I expect major labs already know many of the things in this report. Acknowledgements I'd like to thank the following people for their feedback, advice, and discussion: James Bradbury, Software Engineer, Google DeepMind Benjamin Edelman, Ph.D. Candidate, Harvard University Horace He, Software Engineer, PyTorch/Meta Lukas Finnveden, Research Analyst, Open Philanthropy Project Joanna Morningstar, Chief Scientific Officer, Nanotronics Keller Scholl, Ph.D. Candidate, Pardee RAND Graduate School Jaime Sevilla, Director, Epoch Cody Wild, Research Engineer, Google Index Cost Breakdown of ML Training Estimates the costs of training a frontier (state of the art) model, drawing on leaks and analysis. Why ML GPUs Cost So Much ML GPUs are expensive largely because of their communication and memory capabilities - not because of their processing power. NVIDIA's best gaming GPU provides greater ML processing power than the GPU used to train GPT-4, for only a tenth the price. Note that NVIDIA's near monopoly plausibly explains some of the price differential. Contra FLOPs Argues that the most common metric of ML computing power - floating point operations - is flawed, due to the rise of different types of floating point numbers making standardization difficult and the cost of processing power representing a small portion of the cost of ML. ML Parallelism An overview of ML parallelism techniques, showing how the common notion that "ML is embarrassingly parallel" is simplistic and breaks down at large scales - where any simple method of parallelizing a model starts to hit bottlenecks as the capabilities of individual devices become bottlenecks regardless of the number of devices involved. We (Probably) Won't Run Out of Data There are many routes toward preventing data from becoming a major bottleneck to ML scaling, though it's not certain any of them enable scaling as fast as has occurred historically. AI Energy Use and Heat Signatures ML energy usage may become important in the near future, even if it's a relatively minor concern for frontier model training right now. If current trends continue, energy usage could limit scaling, determine major engineering challenges, and provide a novel approach to surveillance of training runs using satellites and multispectral photography. Doomberg, the top-earning finance publication on Substack, is led by a cartoon chicken that previously worked in heavy industry. Okay, so it wasn't the chicken that worked in heavy industry—but its anonymous creators, with a background in hard sciences and energy, did. They chose the green chicken as their publication's logo because they want it to be instantly recognizable on Twitter, which they use as their main marketing channel (it is, after all, the bird app). The plucky avian also fits with the cheeky “defensive pessimism” of Doomberg's ethos, as captured in its tagline: “Chicken Little Gets a Terminal.” Doomberg is a small team (“you could count us on one hand and have a few fingers left over”) with one man as the lead writer. I talked to that man for this episode, but he used a voice modifier to protect his identity. He's worried about being discovered by his peers and prefers for people's focus to be on his analysis rather than his personality. And what of that analysis? Well, it's strong-minded, intelligent, and entertaining, featuring bold statements, such as predicting the onset of a “global famine of historic proportions” and classifying “nuclear waste alarmism” as a way to “rob humanity of carbon-free energy.” The aim, they say at Doomberg, is to be “provocative but not polarizing.” I've talked to hundreds of writers over the years at Substack, but none has applied quite so much rigor to growing a media business from scratch as Doomberg. For Doomberg, the content creation is just a small (but important) piece of the process. They spend just as much time obsessing about brand, technology, and operations. For any Substack strategy nerds, this episode is a must-listen.Show notesSubscribe to Doomberg on SubstackFind Doomberg on TwitterThe Brand Gap by Marty NeumeierHead coach of the University of Michigan football, Jim HarbaughWe Are About to Run Out of Some Stuff, June 15, 2021Farmers on the Brink, Mar. 26, 2022 [discussed at 26:21][02:17] The mindset of Doomberg [03:36] The path to Doomberg[05:28] Previous consulting business[06:50] Doomberg's five strategy pillars for success[07:42] The bin of great writing never read[09:43] Brand sketches and objective[11:13] What type of writer are you?[13:38] The people behind Doomberg[15:53] The customer journey[17:43] The media business is dying[20:37] Editorial integrity [23:05] Twitter is a toxic hell[27:00] On being provocative, not polarizing [30:11] The state of leadership today [33:00] Corporate elitism [37:21] The future of consumption[38:22] Enjoying personal sovereignty[41:00] Starting a media business from zeroThe Active Voice is a podcast hosted by Hamish McKenzie, featuring weekly conversations with writers about how the internet is affecting the way they live and write. And, Karen even dishes on the well-kept secret that Hermie can actually cook (well, rice that is…).  In Stanley's “Leaning Right Moment,” Hermie and Bill discuss the terrible results of the National Educational Assessment (NEAP) test, that showed significant declines in the past two years in both reading in math for Virginia public school students (the worst decline in the nation), why it happened, and what Gov. Youngkin and Republicans plan to do to turn those scores around in the immediate future. Hermie also discusses with Stanley the alarming fact that the United States may just RUN OUT of its diesel fuel supply in the next thirty days (yep, you heard that right), and what that could mean for gas prices, food prices and supply chain issues nationwide.   In Sadler's “Turning Left Moment,” Hermie and Bill discuss how their inaugural season competing in the SMART Modified Racing Series turned out, the last SMART race at Motor Mile, and their upcoming NASCAR® Whelen Modified Race in Martinsville where two expert wheelmen, NASCAR® Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte and NASCAR® legend Ryan Newman, will be piloting the Sadler/Stanley Racing open-wheel modified machines around this historic Virginia track! Yes, you guessed it, this is yet another “can't miss” episode of the LRTL podcast! I remember phone boxes having Buttons A and B. You had to insert your coins into the slot and press button A if someone answered that call. If nobody answered you pressed button B and got your money back. We used to visit local phone boxes and if you pressed button B you would sometimes get money back when people had forgotten to press it if their call wasn't connected. Before the arrival of STD codes you would often have to ask the operator to connect to you a number outside your local area. Jeremy Harpham on The 15 greatest video games of the 80s! Wild Thoughts, Midlife Crisis, Honey!, In the Boring Day, 再度重相逢,Into Dust, Grab My Hair, Run Out.
