Dr. Jay Cephas considers two Depression-era murals in Detroit and their contrasting messaging about workers, labor, and power. Diego Rivera's famed Detroit Industry murals (top), commissioned by Edsel Ford for the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1932, champions industrial and technological progress and the factory workers who fueled it. In contrast, Walter Speck and Barbara Wilson's 1937 untitled mural (bottom), which originally hung in the UAW Local 174 union hall and now hangs behind the reference desk at the Reuther Library, champions the progress those industrial workers made laboring for their own welfare via union action. Dr. Cephas is Assistant Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture at Princeton University. His essay “Detroit Industry and ‘The Mural': Representing Labor and Reappropriating Care in the Museum and in the Union Hall,” was published in the 2023 volume, Architectures of Care: From the Intimate to the Common. Daily DLP: Around the League Week Two The NFL had yet another week of games and Ash Thompson is here to tell you what happened in most of them. You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and countless hours watching teams you don't care about playing football, so he's doing it for you. Apparently, some teams who sack the quarterback five times actually win. Malik Willis sucks. Anthony Richardson sucks too. Sam Darnold sucks and Caleb Williams sucks. Daniel Jones sucks, and Jayden Daniels sucks. Bo Nix sucks and also Malik Willis sucks. Welcome to the daily DLP. Ash Thompson gives you the receivers that he thinks are likely to be draft targets for the team. Not every good receiver is the kind of person that the Lions are likely to take. Is there a receiver being mentioned for the Lions at pick 29 that Ash thinks the Lions should wait on? Is there a receiver that nobody is talking about for the Lions that Ash thinks they should target at pick 29? Who are the day three guys that the Lions are probably targeting? Detroit Lions Draft Deep Dive Part Two With a little time to process the results of the Detroit Lions 2023 NFL Draft, Scott Bischoff shares his thoughts on Brad Holmes choices in the 2023 NFL Draft for the Detroit Lions Podcast. This year's NFL draft left a lot of Lions fans confused about positional value. It left a number of draft "experts" confused as well. Some were outwardly critical, others were filled with praise for Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions. One thing for sure, everyone was talking about the Lions draft. Detroit Lions Podcast Provides Context On Detroit Lions Draft Scott takes a more nuanced approach to his review of the Detroit Lions 2023 NFL draft choices. There are definitely picks and moves the he believes deserve praise, but as is true in life, there are multiple potential outcomes, and he explores what these might be and how people may retrospectively think about the draft with the luxury of hindsight. There is so much information here that we've broken this into a two-part series. Definitely great analysis on the Detroit Lions 2023 NFL draft and what to expect from the Detroit Lions going forward in 2023. https://youtu.be/uApKiXasWao Let us know what you think about the show by commenting in the podcast thread in the subreddit, or by leaving us a voice mail message via Skype at: Detroit Lions Podcast Your input will help make the show better, and if you leave us a message on Skype, you just might be featured in an upcoming podcast! Here's your Daily Detroit podcast recorded in the Paris of the Midwest on Monday Oct. 22: Two Detroit funeral homes are under investigation after police found the remains of fetuses and a dead infant. One of the businesses — Perry Funeral Home — was closed by the state, with its mortuary license revoked. Sven reports to us about his trip from Las Vegas, where Ford briefed dealers on its plans to make 75 percent of its product lineup all-new by 2020 and unleashed the new "Built Ford Proud" ad campaign starring Bryan Cranston, perhaps best known as Walter White from "Breaking Bad." Ford was trying to calm the nerves of a dealer base rattled by criticisms from Wall Street and auto analysts over a lack of clarity on new products and how exactly it intends to turn around its money-losing operations in foreign markets. Across town, General Motors was named No. 1 for gender equity in a new ranking of publicly traded companies by Equileap, which monitors and gathers data on gender equality in companies. GM is led by a female CEO, Mary Barra, and recently promoted a woman to be chief financial officer. The Tower Center, an often-overlooked shopping mall at Grand River and Greenfield on Detroit's west side, is getting a new anchor tenant. Forman Mills will celebrate its grand opening next month. It takes over the space last occupied by Montgomery Ward, which closed in 1986. The mall has seen a number of small, black-owned businesses open for business, thanks to low rents. Corktown is in line to get another new coffee shop. Lucky Detroit will open on the second floor above Detroit Barbers. Local favorite Bucharest Grill is reopening downtown. The popular purveyor of shawarma will open at 436 W. Columbia Street with 130 seats and 24 beer taps.
