Public employee unions have a death grip on the operating machinery of government. Bad cops can't be fired, schools can't work, and politicians sell their souls for union support. The devil is in the astonishing details, and Philip Howard, a brilliant leader of government and legal reform, provides them here. Good news: there is a solution.

From the start of 2021 to November 2023 a total of 333 police staff - constabulary and non-sworn - were investigated for alleged criminal offending. The constabulary includes all of those from recruits right up to senior inspectors and top cops. Non sworn staff are in admin or support roles within the organisation. Of those investigated, 89 were charged. In some cases, employees faced multiple charges. They have murdered and raped people. They have stolen and lied. They’ve bought and sold drugs. They have abused children. They’ve assaulted their partners. They have been violent. They have tried to pervert the course of justice. Instead of upholding the law as their job requires - these men and women were breaking it. Here, A Moment In Crime host Anna Leask looks at memorable examples of crooked cop staff brought to justice by their workmates since the early 2010s. When regular people get fired for doing something they shouldn't, it's usually cut and dry. Most folks don't fight for months or years to return to their old workplace, especially if you've been disciplined in public. But for Pittsburgh police, it's not only the norm, it usually comes with enormous checks for hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay. Today we're with Rich Lord, the managing editor for PublicSource, to talk about the very old state law that makes these reinstatements possible; a few recent, higher profile examples like Keith Edmunds and Aaron Fetty; and the surprising way the Gainey administration has responded. Send a message to the showA few things to remember: John O'Keefe is dead. His family hasn't been able to properly mourn (nor has Karen Read) and this is a horrible place for a family to be.There are kids involved. John O'Keefe was the guardian and main caregiver to his niece and nephew that in no way asked for or deserved to be at the center of this nightmare. There is a lot of scrutiny surrounding the John O'Keefe murder trial.Karen Read is not a stupid woman. She's a member of the faculty at Bentley, in their Finance Dept  for the last 16 years. She works (or worked) for Fidelity Investments in Equity Research and was a Financial Analyst. There has been so much pre-trial publicity that it may be impossible for her to be looked at fairly. This case is simply bananas. The more I learn about it, the more questions I have, beginning with What the hell happened at 34 Fairview in Canton in the early hours of January 29, 2022?We know eastern Massachusetts was in the grips of a major snowstorm. Turns out, it was a blizzard. Boston got 23.5 inches of snow that Saturday at Logan Airport, making January 29, 2022 the second largest January storm every recorded in the city. The seventh biggest snowstorm of all time in Boston's recorded history. The temperature dropped to 21 degrees. This had to have hampered the investigation. There were the red solo cups, the grocery bag, that leaf blower - very Tarantino. I watched some of the testimony this week and I checked in with Dubs, the True Crime Bloodhound, to help me out with this week's big happenings. --- Justice for Beth Brodie | Event linkHer killer is seeking parole, hearing is Thurs May 16 at the Massachusetts Parole Offices in Natick. Contact the showEpisode 63 is a walk through the frenzy that is called "The Canton Cover-up" by some, others see it as a national spectacle. Canton, the small town 15 miles south of the city of Boston, is no stranger to tragedy. Three and a half decades ago, sweet, trusting 14-year-old Shawn Ouillette was lured into the woods, beaten, and left for dead. His 14-year-old schoolmate and eventual killer said no one would miss him. He wanted to know what it was like. To kill. That was 1986. Shawn is still missed by all who love him. His killer, Rod Matthews, remains in prison.  Fast forward to present day. The events surrounding John O'Keefe's death have split this same small town in two. The case of a 46-year-old surrogate father to his sister's orphaned kids and 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department is a shit show to no fault of his own. Lost, as is always the case, is the victim themselves. John O'Keefe was so beloved that a GoFundMe fundraising page set up for his niece and nephew after he died, had raised more than $245,000 within its first 24 hours. Karen Read, 44, who was John O'Keefe's longtime girlfriend, was arrested within days of his death and charged with drunkenly backing into him in her SUV in a snowstorm and leaving him to bleed out and freeze to death. Read has amassed a group of supporters in what some locals refer to as a "frame job" against her by a bunch of dirty townie cops, staties, FBI agents, and DAs. The cases I refer to in this episode include: Jeffrey Curley, Cambridge, Mass, he was 10 when he was taken by a neighbor with the promise of a bike, abused and killed in 1997, his murderers were put away by then-prosecutor, David Yannetti, who is now defending Read.Beth Brodie, Groveland, Mass, 1992, she was 15 when a boy who demanded her affection planned an attack with a bat and killed her in a neighbor's bedroom. Visit JusticeforBethBrodie.com - her killer is up for parole, the hearing is Thurs, May 16 in Natick. Write the parole board and tell them No Parole for Richard Baldwin, W56202 Molly Bish, Warren, Mass, 2000 - she was 16 when she disappeared from her lifeguard job at Comins Pond. Crooked South African Police Service (SAPS) members are “filling up” court rooms with malicious prosecutions to silence their competent colleagues who are investigating politically sensitive cases - as well as the honest ones who are trying to expose corruption. Long-time violence- and police monitor Mary De Haas - who has fought tirelessly for decades to hold the police accountable for abuses of power - gives BizNews the inside story of a force “riddled with criminality”. She describes how one officer is being maliciously prosecuted with no evidence at all, but simply to take him off a case that is a “political bombshell”. She recalls how the Nationalists still had a sense of shame when exposed, but says the current government has “no sense of shame”. De Haas lists the urgents police reforms that could be implemented immediately if there were political will - and she calls on big business to do read the Riot Act to the Presidency. Meanwhile, she is fighting all the way to Parliament on behalf of SAPS whistleblower Patricia Morgan-Mashale who is still in hiding. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lt. Marrache shares his experiences exonerating good cops and holding bad cops accountable in LA

Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

Several weeks ago, when Pastor Mark extended the invitation share a midweek Lenten reflection on “wilderness,” I immediately thought of my years as a Boy Scout Leader because we went into the actual wilderness together. We did this literally, of course, as Scouts are inclined to do, but I found myself in a proverbial wilderness in many ways, too. Through it all, the boys came out on the other side as experienced leaders while I learned how to teach, lead and guide them along the way. It was thirty-eight years ago that I became a Cub Scout Den Leader, then a Cub Master. I was recruited by the District Chair at a District Meeting asking if I'd consider becoming the Scout Master of my sons' Boy Scout Troop? What!? But, I don't like hunting or fishing and my camping skills are really rusty. Then he said something that I'll never forget. “Could you teach boys to become leaders?” ……… Well, yeah! But what about the old guard Scout Masters? Won't they loudly protest over a woman Scout Master? (How many of you are surprised that I was actually worried about that?) He said, if that happens, you let me know. I gave it about 5 seconds of thought and said, okay. (Are any of you surprised that I volunteered? Mhmm.) I'd just become the first female Scout Master in Hancock County. I'm still proud of that accomplishment. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where the adventure into the wilderness of teaching boys to become leaders began. I really knew very little about the Boy Scout side of Boy Scouts of America, yet here I was, about to brave the unknown with eight 11-year-old boys looking to me to teach them. There were 4 older boys already in the Troop. I learned that I could lean on them to teach these young boys things like knots and camping skills and how to run a meeting, kind of. Meanwhile, I attended trainings, dove into the leadership materials, the Boy Scout Handbook and the Merit Badge Handbook so that I could bring the best program possible to these boys. Fortunately, I had brought a handful of dedicated parents with me so I challenged them to take on roles that would facilitate a successful program. Romans 12 tells us that we each have gifts that differ according to the grace given us. As leaders for our troop of Scouts, this proved to be true. We needed Planners, Administrators, Disciplinarians, Good Cops, Bad Cops and, of course, those with the camping, fishing, and other outdoor skills every Scout needs to learn. As a committee, we would need to find those who would or could lead, teach and guide the boys toward achieving Eagle Rank through merit badge and leadership activities. We would need adults to support these boys as they transitioned from child into responsible leader. We would certainly need adults to cheer the boys on and to be the teachers they would need for the many merit badges they needed for rank advancement. The hardest thing I had to teach the parents and the committee members was the fact that Boy Scouts are a boy-lead organization at the Troop level. I had taken to heart the charge of teaching boys to be their own leaders. Teaching the boys to lead begins with them serving as Patrol Leaders. (Maybe give us a sentence or two about what a Patrol Leader is/does, exactly.) I saw a lot of fear in the eyes of these young boys as we asked them to be in charge of their 8-member Patrol. We told them not to worry, that we would guide them. 1 Timothy 4 tells us not to let anyone despise us because of our youth but set the believers an example in speech and in conduct. And that's what we did. We asked the boys to set the example for their patrol members, something like what Jesus did when he said, “For I have set an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.”Our new Boy Scouts started out in a group of only 8 boys. They learned that their leader would be one of them, so no greater than they were. Jesus teaches us the same thing, right? He came onto this earth to learn to walk as a human so that he could lead us by his example, teaching us to be leaders, or better followers, in the process. We also told our Scouts that they would take turns being the Patrol Leader. The message was to remember that doing unto this Patrol Leader would likely come back, in spades, to haunt them when it was their turn to be Patrol Leader. It's really amazing to watch behaviors change when they know the possibility and potential for repercussions.Teaching leadership also involved letting the boys fall on their faces, then helping them up and asking what they could have done to prevent that from happening. (Like the time when…) Mistakes in a safe place without judgment are a great learning opportunity. Okay, depending on the mistake, we adults may have laughed a little from time to time. Can you think of a time when Jesus sent his Disciples out and they fell on their faces? How about the time Peter stepped out of the boat, onto the sea, only to begin sinking from fear and lack of faith? Or the time Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs, “like lambs in the midst of wolves,” and told them to shake the dust from their feet when others refused the good news they were promising? Our boys, committee and I grew that troop from 4 boys to an active troop of 30 boys in 2 years. We produced 8 Eagle Scouts from that group; an awesome feat given that generally only 2% of boys earn their Eagle Rank. I leaned into several scripture verses as I prepared tonight's message. The first was that moment when Jesus encouraged Peter to step out of the boat, in faith. I stepped into the role of Scout Master – a new, strange, foreign kind of wilderness for me at the time - with faith that there would be those to guide me. As I believe each time I step up to serve around here, as a Bible Study Leader. Or Communion Assistant. Or Assisting Minister. Or as a bread-baker, even. These are all leadership roles in our church – some bigger than others. And, do you know what? As nervous as I am serving the first time in any of these ways … even if they feel like a new, strange, foreign kind of wilderness for me … I find that God stands with me at the crucial hour, when it matters, loving and supporting me. And, miracle of miracles, the nervousness subsides and peace descends on me. I also appreciated the words from I Peter 5 that advise us to lead the flock eagerly, and “not for shameful gain, not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.” What better advice for learning to lead or live through any kind of wilderness we may face, than to remember that it's not all about us and how awesome and able we may be – or not – but about how awesome and able God is, in the end?Amen

This Christmas Eve, I'm giving my readers the gift of a very special podcast. Marc Andreessen and Rob Henderson join me to talk about The Shield, which ran on FX from 2002 to 2008. We debate whether we are supposed to root for the Strike Team or not, with Rob saying no, and Marc and me strongly disagreeing. Building on our discussions on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Marc gives his Nietzschean interpretation of the show. To me, this was the most right-wing show I've ever seen. The lesson is basically that white cops who actually care about what happens on the streets are the only thing maintaining order, which they are able to do as long as they are not stopped by affirmative action, criminal defense lawyers, or the weakness and inertia of government. While the Strike Team does bad things, their actions are, for most of the series at least, directed towards protecting the innocent and ultimately the greater good. Sam Bankman-Fried would approve.Marc discusses the show in the context of the history of policing in Los Angeles, and posits that places go through cycles in which crime increases, and there is then a demand for someone to keep order. I point out that some civil liberties that many Americans think are a deep part of our heritage were actually invented by the Supreme Court in the 1960s, including criminals having the right to a court-appointed attorney and being read their Miranda rights. I see The Shield as critiquing the pro-criminal jurisprudence of the Warren Court, and making clear its practical consequences. A lesson seems to be that the reason crime hasn't been even worse is that certain cops are willing to disobey the letter and spirit of the law, at great personal risk, for the sake of protecting their community.People have said the show is based on the Ramparts scandal. Having read the New Yorker piece that Marc suggests, I think that there's no more than a superficial resemblance. Nonetheless, the article is worth reading, as it shows the interconnectedness between crime, the civil rights machines, and affirmative action in policing. The most corrupt cops were tied to gang bangers, and when one of them was killed by a fellow police officer in what is widely acknowledged to have been a justified shooting, the association of black officers demanded “an official police funeral with full honors, a ceremony reserved for policemen killed in the line of duty.” Civil rights law demanded more black cops, quotas were set, and when those hired turned out to be corrupt, that fact became the basis for civil rights lawsuits filed on behalf of criminals! There's no part of the criminal justice system that isn't touched by the cancer of identity politics. Part of our discussion centers around Mara. I found her arc particularly touching. We of course talk about the ending, which hit me harder than any show I can remember watching. As we all acknowledge, the Strike Team is far from morally blameless. But I still think that, as tragic as their story was or how many mistakes they made, they lived by a code, and were ultimately the defenders of a divided and ungrateful community. Police or cops, by definition, are an authority dedicated to enforcing laws and investigating crimes. If the situation warrants, they're authorized to make arrests. Most of us think we can trust the police with our lives. But why has public opinion sunk to a new low, and why is it that the bad cops are only held accountable when caught in the act?In this video, I'll talk about how much cops can get away with in America and how problematic that is for the average citizen if left unchecked.Only in America: Why the Public Doesn't Trust the Police________________________________________If you liked the video, subscribe to my channel!https://www.youtube.com/c/DerrickKirk?sub_confirmation=1 You can also follow me on:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/WHEREISDKIRK/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/dkirkforus/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mythoughts_with_derrickSNAPCHAT: https://bit.ly/3LvANda Visit my website: http://derrickkirk.com/ Show Your Support: https://bit.ly/3S2mr6m Support the show

The report countered claims made by an attorney for Officer Houston Tipping's mother, who filed a damages claim against the city alleging in part that the officer was beaten by multiple other officers in a scenario meant to "simulate a mob." The attorney representing Tipping's family on Monday alleged that Tipping had made a report about a sexual assault involving several officers before his death. The attorney claimed that Tipping was intentionally attacked during the exercise as an act of retaliation because he had filed the report. The 32-year-old was paralyzed in the training exercise back in May and died three days later. The LAPD has said it was an accident, but Tipping's mother has since filed a wrongful death claim. In 1963, the U.S. Supreme court ruled, in Brady vs. Maryland, prosecutors must turn over exculpatory, or favorable evidence to the defense to lessen the instance of faulty convictions. This applies to the history of the arresting officers, especially if that officer has a track record of corruption. Unfortunately, this is not happening and the courts are refusing to abide by the ruling. On this episode of the Free Thought Project podcast, Jason and Matt sit down with Officer Jody and Johann Drolshagen — the creator of the Brady List. The Brady List is a platform which Drolshagen has built that allows allows Organizations [LEOrg], Prosecutors, and Peace Officer Standards & Training [POST] Departments to enter their independent findings, in any number of cases, in direct compliance with Brady and the Freedom of Information Act in order to help the courts follow the original ruling.  Keeping a database on problem cops will help ensure trust in the community through transparency and force accountability through oversight. “Brady” lists are exclusion lists for police. When police show prosecutors they're untrustworthy, prosecutors can put them on a list, so everyone knows not to trust them in court. Many cops are upset about being held accountable, as everyone understands to reject cases from these officers. The problem? State and District Attorneys have also been implicated in prosecutorial misconduct, violating the Brady Act.PushBlack exists because we saw we had to take matters into our own hands, especially when it comes to protecting our communities. Most founders would rather be seen as an inspirational, positive figure in their organization, and not as the person who has to constantly push back against their compliance team. If you are one of those founders who feels as if they are always playing the bad cop, this episode is for you! In today's show I share my perspective on how to improve the relationship between founders and compliance officers; it is not a quick fix, and involves some major changes incorporated in a subtle way, but if you are able to implement these changes, it will benefit the parties on both sides of the equation, and the organization as a whole.  If you found value in this episode, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a review!
