Send us a Text Message.Part 2 discussion combined 2 topics discussed earlier on "architecture students missing skill set" with " the architect entrepreneur, design thesis and hypothesis". Further analysis on the 2 other students who dealt with the eco-system (system thinking) using their architectural project showed an entrepreneurial aspect - please read about these: Wong Chiang Her's Botanic Gardens and Wong Joe Yee's Vertical Neighbourhood Shared Space. The conclusion proposed that the learning for this generation (Gen Zs) can be perfunctory, where a first degree (part 1) graduate may acquire the 'architect entrepreneur' sense even earlier, as depicted by two persons I had known personally. This could be the game changer for architecture education where to acquire the first degree in architecture is enough.© 2024 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. Malaysia spent RM80 billion on subsidies in 2023 which has led to increasing calls for rationalisation as there are unintended economic consequences . We ask Alex Clark, Head of International, APAC at The Behavioural Insights Team and Dr Amjad Rabi, Visiting Expert, Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC), Universiti Malaya the intricacies in the implementation of targeted subsidies, what are the factors at play here and the best method to help those in need.
Dr Amjad Rabi, a visiting expert at the Social Wellbeing Research Centre with Universiti Malaya, has proposed several measures to address how the Madani government could proceed with its subsidy rationalisation plans. He takes us through some of his suggestions that include a package of cash assistance in the form of periodic payments to vulnerable groups but is against poverty targeting which tends to stigmatise the poor.Image credit: Shutterstock.com

Traditional textiles can tell us a lot about the people and cultural traditions behind it, and one such textile is the Pua Kumbu, which is hand-woven and designed by Iban women. However, like many other traditional knowledge and skills, it is becoming a dying art as fewer of the younger generation of Iban women pick it up. Here to share more about the Pua Kumbu and what stories textiles can tell us is Dr Welyne Jeffrey Jehom, a senior lecturer at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Universiti Malaya. She's also the founder of the Rumah Gareh Pua Kumbu Community Project, which involves Iban women coming from or living at Rumah Gareh in Kapit, Sarawak and helps them to develop the weaving of Pua Kumbu into a cottage industry. A proposal for the school of architecture to have a university campus design project that includes a master-planning exercise in the beginning for design thesis students to engage in. It is crucial to have a good studio tutor team where they have a commonly understood philosophical approach and the complexities and expectations of the design thesis projects will be fulfilled as there will be a lot of design problems to be identified and solved by each student taking in different building types and in-between spaces issues.©️Talk Architecture 2023, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. When a person identifies themself as an 'architect' even though they do not have a license or a professional qualification, it does not mean that they are confronting the status quo or wish to cause mischief to the profession. It depends on the country whether the architects are stable in terms of the 'playing field' and would not be monitoring or mindful of words used, as the legitimacy is only from a personal point of view (POV). A person identifies themself as an 'architect' "having stuck to the profession, adapted, and flexible in one's career in architecture for 40 years" since one identified very earlier in the second year of architecture school. In this episode, the mention of two issues implies the professional architects' grouses on issues of 'identity', that is: projects given to foreign architects and; clients opting for non-architects in small projects. Hence, the concerns become a debate on hierarchical terms, legitimacy, and the use of the word 'architect' to identify oneself.©️Talk Architecture 2023, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. Born in 1823, Alfred Russel Wallace was a pioneering naturalist and biologist whose significant contributions to the field of natural history paralleled those of Charles Darwin. Wallace independently formulated the theory of evolution through natural selection, a concept he developed during his extensive explorations of the Malay Archipelago, and his groundbreaking work in the 19th century is said to have laid the foundation for modern evolutionary biology. Wallace's collections from the Malay Archipelago included a vast array of specimens, from insects to birds, providing crucial evidence for his evolutionary theories, and his book, "The Malay Archipelago," chronicles his travels and observations, offering invaluable insights into the region's biodiversity and cultural diversity. We reflect on his life with Palaeontologist & Zooarchaeologist Lim Tze Tshen, who is attached with the Sarawak Museum and the Geology Dept of Universiti Malaya, to mark the bicentenary of Wallace's birth, and to discuss how Wallace's life and legacy continue to inspire and shape our understanding of the natural world.Image Credit: Natural History Museum, PBS, Wikimedia CommonsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Methane is the second-largest contributor to global warming after Carbon Dioxide and reducing methane emissions is crucial due to its significant impact on short-term global warming. Recognising this importance is often hindered by unclear information, but scientists are working hard to increase awareness on the issue, as methane emission reductions are considered a readily achievable and cost-effective solution, making them a low-hanging fruit in the quest for overall emission reduction. Malaysia signed the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) in November 2021 along with around 100 other countries - what progress have we seen from our country in that area since then? In 2022, civil society organisation CERAH formed a partnership with the University of Malaya, the University of Nottingham Malaysia, and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to promote transparency, public engagement, and progress on methane emissions reduction in Malaysia, through the CERAH-EDF Project. The project which recently concluded offers some key findings and recommendations, including the need to clearly articulate a national direction for methane action. We find out more from Dr. Helena Varkkey (Associate Professor of Environmental Politics and Governance, Universiti Malaya) and Dr. Matthew Ashfold (Atmospheric Scientist and Assoc Prof, University of Nottingham Malaysia), who were both involved in the research project.Image Credit: ShutterstockSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2011, a major earthquake off the coast of Japan triggered a tsunami which flooded the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, causing a major nuclear disaster. Efforts to decontaminate the area and cool down the highly radioactive reactors have resulted in the wastewater being stored in tanks at the plant, but 12 years later, Japan is running out of space and has begun the process of releasing that water into the Pacific Ocean as of yesterday (24 August). But this move, which has been planned for years, has been fiercely debated over its safety, even as the International Atomic Energy Agency backed the plan. Here to help us better understand this move, and whether we should be worried about its impact, is Emeritus Prof Dr Ng Kwan Hoong, medical physicist from the Department of Biomedical Imaging at Universiti Malaya. Prof Ng is also a fellow with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Image Credit: Shutterstock
