Mothers Against GenocideThis column makes no apologies for writing so much about the genocide in Palestine and the urgent need for ceasefires and a peace process.  At least 14,000 babies face imminent death from starvation. Over 60,000 Palestinian children, women, men have been killed, including more than 4,000 since Israel ended its ceasefire in March. One especially harrowing example of Israel's murder machine at work was the deliberate targeting last Friday of the family home of Hamdi and Walaa al-Najjar, two doctors who work at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. As Hamdi was at work nine of her ten children were killed. Her husband and a 10th child was left critically ill.Mothers Against Genocide have stood up against this savagery and for the rights of the Palestinian people. Sue Pentel and Martine McCullough are active in this campaign. Sue has been a political activist all her life. My earliest memory of her is as a member of Women against Imperialism over 40 years ago. Sue is a Gaeilgeoir who has worked for decades promoting the education of our young people through the medium of Irish. She is also a committed advocate for the rights of the people of Palestine and last weekend she and her friend Martine were arrested by the PSNI and charged with ‘criminal damage' to an ATM at Barclays Bank in Castle Place in Belfast City Centre. The so-called criminal damage was the placing of a sticker on the machine as a reminder of Barclays role in selling Israeli war bonds.‘If I Must Die'There will be a public event this Saturday – 31 May - about the ongoing genocide. The venue is St Comgalls/Ionad Eileen Howell and it starts at 7.30pm. Chairing the meeting, which is sponsored by the Bobby Sands Trust, will be Dr Brendan Ciaran Browne, Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution. The main speaker will be Yousef M. Aljamal On the International Wall in Belfast there is a poem by Refaat Alareer, ‘If I Must Die' which he wrote for his daughter, Shaymaa, who would grow up to be an accomplished illustrator. It is very poignant because the Israelis went on to kill Refaat, along with his sister, brother and four of nephews and nieces, eighteen months ago. Give the vote to 16-year-old citizens. The debate on reducing the voting age to 16 is gathering momentum. Twice in the last decade the Assembly – minus the DUP - has endorsed the call for the vote to be reduced in the North from 18 to 16. Several years ago Sinn Féin introduced a Bill in the Oireachtas to allow for this in southern elections and last week An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that he had an “open mind” on such a proposition and would give it “serious consideration.”The Commission on the Future of Ireland are hosting 'Health & Care in a New Ireland' on the 6th of June, 1pm at St Comgalls, Belfast.Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/health-care-in-a-new-ireland-tickets-1354804690299

Let it be a tale: Israele distrugge, Abu Toha ricostruisce parola per parola

Eppure continua a scrivere. Let it be a tale”.

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Elon's 6-digit spending spree for Trump, Pete Hegseth's nomination, US healthcare, Trump's expanding cabinet of billionaires, the blocked release of the Gaetz ethics report, job growth leading into Trump 2.0, Russia's use of civilians for target practice, stalling Tesla sales, Israel's most recent slaughtering of a humanitarian zone, and affirmative action in the US, before expanding on the coverage around the killing of United Healthcare's CEO. Jeet Heer then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into the topic of Trump's anti-establishment appeal, unpacking how his cabal of criminals – albeit largely wealthy and establishment-friendly ones – can capitalize on overwhelming disillusionment toward and rejection of US political institutions by at least providing SOME cathartic bucking of the system. Expanding on this, they parse through the particular role of the Democratic Party and its leadership, presenting Trump as an aberration from the deeply unpopular norms and establishment that guide US politics, while reiterating and centering their commitment to said establishment and norms, wrapping up with how these issues were drastically exacerbated by Joe Biden's decision to run for reelection. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the attempt to spin Pete Hegseth as the “new” Donald Trump, tackle the gerontocratic decline of the Democratic Party, and watch Bill Clinton shame Palestinians for not happily embracing Israeli expansion. Hasan goes tweed, Russell Brand takes pity on the women he's exploited, and Matt Walsh gets wildly outshined by a 12-year-old trans girl speaking to the masses outside of the Supreme Court. A poem written by Refaat Al- Areer رفعت العرعير read by The Arabian Traveler.
Refaat Alareer, a prominent Palestinian professor, poet and writer, was killed in an airstrike in northern Gaza, on December 7.
If I must die, you must live to tell my story to sell my things to buy a piece of cloth and some strings, (make it white with a long tail) so that a child, somewhere in Gaza while looking heaven in the eye awaiting his dad who left in a blaze— and bid no one farewell not even to his flesh not even to himself— sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above and thinks for a moment an angel is there bringing back love If I must die let it bring hope let it be a tale

On today's show, Alex is joined by Olivia Wood, a lecturer in the English Department at City College of New York (CCNY) to discuss the recent escalations of force by the NYPD and campus administrators against student protesters in solidarity with Palestine over the past several weeks. In particular, we touch on the flashpoint raids by police - at the behest of campus administrators - at Columbia and CCNY on Tuesday, April 30th, the rhetorical strategies used by student organizers at the encampments to advocate for their causes of disclosure and divestment, and the problematic discourse that mainstream journalists have been circulating when discussing these movements. We conclude by reflecting on the ways that academic worker collectivities (including but not limited to unions) can help show critical support to student demonstrators exercising free speech on campus and advocating for justice in Palestine.ReferencesRemembering Dr. Refaat Alareer (1979-2023)The Killing of 6-year-old Hind Rajab‘This machine bonks fascists': US student protester's water jug becomes symbol of resistanceDoctor in Gaza refuses to evacuate, pleads for Israel-Hamas war to stopLinks to some of Olivia's reporting on academic and student organizing in solidarity with Palestine:Faculty, Staff, and Students Must Unite Against Repression of the Palestine Movement (4/23/24)Faculty at University of Texas Austin Strike in Solidarity with Student Protesters (4/25/24)CUNY Students Occupy Campus in Solidarity with Palestine, Building on the University's Legacy of Radical Organizing (4/27/24)CUNY Rank-and-File Workers Stand With the Student Encampment (4/30/24)An accessible transcript for this episode is available upon request - please send us an email at reverbcontent[at]gmail.com or DM us on Twitter / X

This violence regularly reaches university campuses and touches every dimension of life. This genocidal ethnic cleansing has scarcely been reported by mainstream media at any time in its 50 year history, let alone at a time when western media and politicians openly support a religious war against Palestine. So we're giving a platform to three Palestinian voices to share their story. We speak with Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian academic currently sheltering 15 children in his Gaza apartment, Yumna Patel, the Palestine news director for Mondoweiss, and Muhammad Shehada, a Palestinian writer from Gaza. Their stories of bombings, murder, cruelty, and lies from the Israeli government and malicious rumors from US media and politicians are difficult to hear, but so important when they're being silenced everywhere else. “The American public and the general public around the world is being sold a genocide,” they tell us. “We are being convinced through the rhetoric of Israeli politicians, the US president, and US state department spokespeople that Palestinians, specifically Gazans, are not human. They are trying to wipe Gaza off the map.” And while the deaths of Israelis must be covered and mourned, the West's hypocrisy and double standard on the value of life is clear. “I have never seen the amount of profiles and interviews with the families of victims than I've seen of mainstream media interviewing these Israeli families. I have never seen this level of attention paid to one singular Palestinian.” Israeli children matter. Why don't Palestinian children matter? “No attention is being paid to the killing of 270 children just in the span of three or four days.” Refaat, Yumna, and Muhammad share their frustration and disgust with “the fact that our government and the President of the United States is repeating dehumanizing genocidal language, repeating these unsubstantiated claims.” And sadly, we may not be able to hear their voices for long. Refaat, calling from Gaza with the sounds of bombs exploding in the background during the interview, warns that resources are running low. “But in a couple of days, maximum a week or two, if things don't change, we're looking at a total blackout, no coverage, no media, no internet. Not that Israel cares, and mainstream media is complicit.” Hear them speak, and share the interview to spread their message.
