Jewher Ilham advocates for the end of Uyghur forced labour, carried out in camps like the one where her father is detained. How to encourage governments, companies and individuals to be aware of the origin of their products? With human rights activist Jewher Ilham, Political secretary of Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation (DUHRF) Ahmedjan Kasim, journalist with Follow the Money Yara van Heugten and researcher for SOMO David Ollivier de Leth.‘Did my imprisoned father, cousin or uncle make this shirt?' This is a question Jewher Ilham often asks herself when holding a piece of clothing. Jewher Ilham saw her father for the last time on 2 February 2013 at Beijing International Airport. Right before they would take a flight to the United States. Ilham Tohti was arrested in 2014 and has since been sentenced to life in prison. Jewher hasn't heard of her father since 2017 and doesn't even know if he is still alive.Almost one fifth of all cotton comes from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, often handpicked with forced labour by Uyghurs. Jewher Ilham advocates for the end of Uyghur labor exploitation and calls on international brands to remove all materials produced in Xinjiang from their supply chains. In 2024, the EU passed a Forced Labour Regulaton that requires companies to prove that their products are free from forced labour. Member states need to incorporate this in their national legislation by 2027. Now, however, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which is a fundamental piece of legislation that will work in tandem with the forced labour ban, is under attack with the new omnibus proposal. How to motivate brands to end using materials from Xinjiang? And how to encourage governments and individuals to be aware of the origin of their products? Jewher Ilham (1995) is a Uyghur human rights activist based in the United States. She works for the Workers Rights Consortium and is a spokesperson for the Coalition to End Forced Labour in the Uyghur Region. As the daughter of Ilham Tohti, an economist, writer and outspoken activist for the Uyghurs who was imprisoned for life, Jewher Ilham continues to carry the torch of her father's advocacy.Programme editor and moderator: Mirthe FreseIn collaboration with Amnesty International NLSupported by Vfonds---Want to know more about Forum on European Culture? We received questions covering a wide range of issues, including the bizarre story told by former Senator Pat Leahy of Vermont about how he was secretly accosted by shadowy members of the Deep State who directed him to proof that the Bush administration was lying about the proposed war in Iraq, and he still failed to do anything about it; the significant ruling yesterday by a Trump-appointed federal judge who concluded that the Trump administration lacks the authority to invoke the war-time Alien Enemies Act to deport people to El Salvador; and Ilhan Omar's naughty words to a journalist from the Daily Caller. ----- Watch full episodes on Rumble, streamed LIVE 7pm ET. Our guest in this episode is Dr. Ilham Kadri, the CEO of Syensqo, a global speciality chemicals company listed in Brussels. In 2023, Ilham led the spin-off of Syensqo from Solvay, the 160-year old Belgian chemicals conglomerate. In this interview, Ilham discusses the strategic rationale behind the decision to split Solvay into two separate entities, highlighting the aim to unlock the full potential of both companies. She explains how Solvay, a historic leader in commodity chemicals, and Syensqo, a new entity focused on specialty chemicals, were positioned to pursue their unique growth strategies. The conversation delves into the meticulous planning and execution required for the separation, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement and maintaining operational continuity during a volatile global environment. She highlights Syensqo's focus on innovation and sustainability, detailing its ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and its role in advancing technological solutions. The episode also touches on the broader implications of the spin-off, including the strategic benefits of being a publicly listed company and the impact on stakeholders, from employees to investors. Dr. Kadri's leadership and vision provide a comprehensive view of the complexities involved in creating two independent champions from a long-standing conglomerate.

Mots-Clés : scissions, entreprises, Bourse, conglomérats, acteurs actifs, activité, pure players, Belgique, excessif, signal, négatif, population, commentaires, métier, société privée, bonus, fiscalisé, salaires, actionnaires, milliards, euros, commentateurs, critique, américains, femme, Maroc, doctorat, sciences, France, Etats-Unis, belges, catholiques, noblesse, Casablanca, fleuron, européen, reportage, film, réussite, parcours.
This week on the show, I'm joined by two book-lovers, book bloggers and activists to talk about some really important issues: Ola Abou and Ilham Essalih. We're talking about what books we should read to further understand the war on Gaza, and the war in Syria, and how the movements for liberation in Palestine and Syria are intertwined. At the time of recording (16th October), we were on day 9 of Israel's war against Gaza, with the official death toll having reached nearly 3,000, 700 of whom are children and babies. For 9 days, the besieged Gaza strip has faced relentless attacks and a total land, sea and air blockade, cutting off its supplies of water, food and fuel to 2.3 million people. The situation is beyond horrendous, as hospitals struggle to cope with the injured amid a lack of medical supplies and doctors, and communities are being ordered to leave their homes due to imminent attacks. Even while leaving, passages that were previously declared as safe, have been attacked, sparing no one. There are also increasing reports on attacks in the occupied West Bank, and arrests of over 70 people. The death toll has now exceeded well over 4,000 people, and schools and hospitals have been ruthlessly attacked. Unfortunately, Palestine is not the only place impacted by Israel at the moment. Israel has been bombing Syria, which since 2011, has been in a devastating state of war and crisis. Twelve years after protesters in Syria first demonstrated and rose up against the four-decade rule of the Assad family, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed and nearly thirteen million people—more than half the country's prewar population—have been displaced. Amid war, the Syrian people are suffering an economic crisis, and a massive earthquake at the start of 2023 cast much of the population in the north into further despair.Follow Ola and Ilham on social media:Ola: www.instagram.com/slowreadingola Ilham: www.instagram.com/ilhamreadsBooks mentioned in this episode:Palestine:ClassicsGhassan Kanafani: Men in the Sun, Palestine's Children Emile Habiby: The Secret Life of Saeed the Pessoptimist Halim Barakat: Days of Dust (was meant to mention this book but I forgot but it's really good!)Poetry of Mahmoud DarwishNon-fiction/memoirs: Palestine writers:Edward Said: The Question of Palestine + his memoir Out of Place Mourid Barghouti: I Saw Ramallah Rashid Khalidi, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine (history)Jewish writers:Ilan Pappe: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine + Ten Myths About Israel Avi Shlaim: Three Worlds Massoud Hayoun: When We Were Arabs (forgot to mention this, it's another memoir about Jews from Arab lands, really essential for understanding Zionism)Contemporary:Isabella Hammad: The ParisianAdania Shibli: Minor Detail Ahlam Bsharat: Trees of the Absentees + Code Name: Butterfly Mohammed El-Kurd: Rifqa (poetry) Syria:-In Praise of Hatred, Khaled Khalifa-What Strange Paradise, Omar El Akkad-The Middle East Crisis Factory, Iyad El-Baghdadi and Ahmed Gatnash-We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria, Wendy Pearlman-Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War, Robin Yassin-Kassab and Leila Al-Shami-You Have Not Yet Been Defeated, Alaa Abd El-Fattah-The Impossible Revolution: Making Sense of the Syrian Tragedy by Yassin al-Haj Saleh-The Book Collectors: A Band of Syrian Rebels and the Stories That Carried Them Through a War by Delphine MinouiSupport the show
