A year and a half in, and in many ways Covid-19 is still an enigma. All over the world, doctors and scientists are still struggling to understand exactly how this new virus undermines our defences and then damages, even destroys, our bodies, in so many different ways. And why are some people completely unaffected? In this edition of The Evidence, Claudia Hammond and her panel of experts chart the remarkable journey to understand this chameleon-like virus, including the long tail of the pandemic, Long Covid. Millions the world over are suffering under the dark shadow of post-Covid, with a multitude of symptoms months after the infection. Some of them, listeners to the programme, share their experiences. And, the background story of the world famous RECOVERY trial, set up at record speed in the UK (but now international) to test which treatments could save the lives of the sickest Covid patients. So far 10 treatments for Covid have been randomised and tested on thousands of patients and the results have shown that six, including the widely used and promoted hydroxychloroquine, make no difference to chances of surviving a hospital stay. While evidence that the cheap, widely-available steroid, dexamethasone, does work, and has so far saved more than a million lives world-wide. Joint chief investigator of RECOVERY, Sir Martin Landray, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, admits to Claudia that he's been asked to include bee pollen and snake venom in the trial, but so far he's resisted. Claudia's expert panel also includes Professor K. Srinath Reddy, cardiologist and epidemiologist and President of the Public Health Institute of India; Dr Sherry Chou, intensivist and neurologist from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine who heads the Global Consortium Study on Neurological Dysfunction in Covid-19 (GCS-NeuroCOVID) and Dr Melissa Heightman, respiratory consultant and Clinical Lead for post-COVID services at University College London Hospitals. Welcome back to the second episode in our two-part series with Professor K. David Harrison. How are languages inextricably connected to other aspects of society and what does that mean about preserving and valuing them? What strategies can educators of multilingual students use to incentivize their students to help keep their home languages thriving - even while they are drawn to use English as the language of record? How have globalization, technology, and emotional connections all played a vital role in preserving and valuing languages? We discuss these questions and much more with K. David Harrison, Professor of Linguistics & Cognitive Science at Swarthmore College and National Geographic Society Explorer. David Harrison is a linguist, author and advocate for the documentation and revitalization of endangered languages. He is currently serving as Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Professor of Linguistics at Swarthmore College. Since 2007, Harrison has been affiliated with the National Geographic Society, co-directing their Enduring Voices Project and providing cultural expertise for expeditions, publications and web-content. His early career research focused on Tuvan and other Turkic languages of central Siberia and western Mongolia. More recently, he has been engaged in fieldwork in India, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, and Vanuatu. His research explores the sounds, lexicon, grammar, and cultural knowledge found in the world’s languages. In his laboratory at Swarthmore College, Harrison works with students and speakers of minority and endangered languages to create Talking Dictionaries and other digital tools. Harrison co-starred in Ironbound Films’ Emmy-nominated 2008 documentary film The Linguists, bringing attention to efforts to preserve dying languages. He also serves as director of research for the non-profit Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages. His work has been awarded funding from the NEH, NSF, Microsoft Research, National Geographic Society, and private donors. Harrison has authored several books and lectures widely on the value of linguistic and cultural diversity. This Week in Turkey‘s guest was Levent Köker, a professor of public law. Professor Köker evaluated the state of law in Turkey in light of the Defense March launched by bar associations across Turkey in protest to the growing pressure from the ruling Justice and Development Party. Professor Köker also evaluated the decisions relating to Istanbul Provincial head for the CHP Canan Kaftancıoğlu’s prison sentence, and the Constitutional Court’s decision relating to former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş’s imprisonment. Professor Köker also assessed how far AKP is willing to stretch the limits of legitimacy in the face of growing opposition.

Traditional American immigration lore tends to feature throngs of poor, huddled masses coming over from Europe, who eventually assimilated into American society, giving us green beer and pizza. Often left out of that story is an equally large migration coming to the West Coast from Asia - particularly China. For episode numero uno of You Don't Have to Yell, Professor K. Scott Wong of Williams College discusses how the experience of Chinese immigrants differed from their European counterparts, how the Chinese laid the groundwork for many of the legal battles on immigration today, and offers some parallels with today's immigration debate we can use as we determine the best path forward as a country.

I'm sitting right on the side of the Blue Mountains, on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, and I write in my attic here so it's an absolutely wonderful setting for a writer. Author Gabriel Farago in Budapest Jenny: Beginning at the beginning . . . .Was there a “Once Upon A Time” moment when you realised you had to write fiction or your life would be the lesser for it? If so what was the catalyst? Gabriel: Looking back on my life that's a difficult one to answer I don't believe it has been one particular moment It's been more of a journey than a moment. I have had a very long legal career. I've been a barrister for many years, running court cases and I have met some very interesting people who were inspiration for taking up writing. However my interest goes back much further than that. I have a literature degree and I have been interested in books going right back to when I was a boy in Austria. Jenny: I see. You've now published three historical mysteries in the Jack Rogan series, but did you start with Jack? Gabriel: Yes, I started with Jack. My first book, The Empress Holds the Key, was a very ambitious project and was ignited by my interest in ancient Egyptology and the church and the scriptures and how all of those mesh together in the past. So that book took me ten years to complete. I was still practising law at the time, so it's been a gradual process. One of your colleagues at the Garvan Institute has described it as a journey into the "dark matter of the human genome" - and I'm very interested in your connection with that institute - it's an internationally recognised cancer research facility in Sydney and several of the scientists there have contributed to a foreword for the book. Gabriel: Yes they have and I think it's appropriate that I tell you a little of how that came about. A writer should only write about things he knows about and is interested in and medical research has been an area of interest of mine for many years. Nicolaou is a Cypriot-American chemist known for the total synthesis of natural products. His research is focused on a specialized field of organic chemistry called total synthesis, which involves the creation of organic molecules from scratch in the laboratory. This process allows rare molecules found in nature to be made in great numbers for study or to serve as the basis for drugs. Or, completely new types of complex organic molecules can be made from simpler precursor molecules.
