With this profile in mind, Chris and Ian have some strong leans up and down the odds board as we try and find our third outright of the calendar year! Buehler scattered six hits and struck out five and walked one. Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed eight hits and gave up six runs, four earned, in 5 2/3 innings. Angels 6, White Sox 5 – Trout HR, Lorenzen, Angels hold off Chisox; DH Ohtani exits Mike Trout homered, doubled and scored three runs, Michael Lorenzen pitched into the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels held off the Chicago White Sox 6-5 for their seventh win in eight games. Shohei Ohtani had an RBI as the Angels’ designated hitter. The two-way AL MVP went 0 for 3 and exited in the ninth inning because of tightness in his right groin. Lorenzen took a 6-0 lead and a bid for his first career complete game into the ninth before the White Sox scored five times in a wild finish. Ryan Tepera, the Angels’ third pitcher of the inning, retired Gavin Sheets on a bases-loaded grounder for the final out. Chicago has lost 11 of 13. Cubs 2, Brewers 0 – Stroman outpitches Burnes, Cubs beat Brewers to avoid sweep Marcus Stroman threw two-hit ball for seven innings, outpitching Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes and leading the Chicago Cubs over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. Patrick Wisdom homered as the Cubs ended a four-game losing streak. They had been outscored 20-2 in dropping the first two games of the series at Milwaukee. Angels (Sandoval 1-0) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 2-1), 2:10 p.m. Tigers and Cubs are off MLB – Batting average dips slightly, power way down across MLB The Major League Baseball batting average this April was a lousy .231, once again on pace to fall under the record low of .237 set in The Year of the Pitcher in 1968. After several years of surging home run totals, batters are slugging a measly .369 and averaging 4.03 runs per game, both lows for baseball since the strike-altered 1981 season. Ripple effects from labor strife are a suspect in this year’s offensive downturn. So, too, is the baseball, of course, along with caveats about cold weather and small samples. There’s one area of universal agreement, and it’s that pitching has become exceptionally good. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Playoffs – 2nd Round Yesterday Milwaukee Bucks 101, Boston Celtics 89 (MIL Leads 1-0) Golden State Warriors 117, Memphis Grizzlies 116 (GSW Leads 1-0) Tonight Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m. (Game 1) Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns, 10:00 p.m. (Game 1) NASCAR – Rain postpones NASCAR Cup race at Dover to Monday Rain postponed Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway to Monday. Dover got in only 78 laps before the race was red flagged. The race resumes at noon Monday. Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott starting 1-2. Ryan Blaney is third, Martin Truex Jr. is fourth and William Byron fifth. Dover will hold a Monday race for the fourth time in 104 career Cup races. Truex has won twice at Dover on Mondays. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs – 1st Round Tonight Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes, 7:00 p.m. (Game 1) Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs, 7:30 p.m. (Game 1) St. Louis Blues at Minnesota Wild, 9:30 p.m. (Game 1) Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers, 10:00 p.m. (Game 1) NHL – Detroit Red Wings fire coach Jeff Blashill after 7 seasons The Detroit Red Wings have fired coach Jeff Blashill after seven seasons behind the bench. Detroit missed the playoffs in each of the past six seasons. General manager Steve Yzerman said the team was not renewing the contracts of Blashill, assistant Doug Houda and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko. The Red Wings have not made the playoffs since Blashill’s first season in 2015-16 when they lost in the first round. Blashill was the head coach at Western Michigan and had been with the Red Wings for 11 years with a stint as head coach in Grand Rapids, where he led the Griffins to the 2013 Calder Cup Championship. He was also an assistant on Mike Babcock’s staff. He had been tabbed by Detroit’s previous regime to guide the storied organization through a rebuild. NFL – St. Joe’s French signs with Colts Former St. Joe Bear and Western Michigan University Bronco Wesley French has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. French played and started at center for Western Michigan University, where the Broncos finished the 2021 regular season at 8-5, 4-4 in the Mid American Conference. Before that the 6’5’ 310 pound offensive lineman played under the Friday Night Lights of Dickinson Stadium in St. Joe for then head coach Gandalf Church. French graduated from St. Joe in 2015. He sat out the Broncos 2015 season earning a red shirt. He suited up for 4 games in the 2016 season, including the Cotton Bowl. He missed the 2019 season after being injured in fall camp. NFL – Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles gets released by Bears The Chicago Bears have released veteran quarterback Nick Foles two years after acquiring the former Super Bowl MVP to compete with Mitchell Trubisky. New general manager Ryan Poles had told reporters he hoped to trade Foles after signing Trevor Siemian to back up Justin Fields. He had one year left on his contract. Foles took Super Bowl 52 honors for Philadelphia. The Bears acquired him from Jacksonville in March 2020. Foles was third string last year behind Fields and Andy Dalton. He started one game with the other two quarterbacks injured, and threw for 250 yards in a win at Seattle in late December. Golf – PGA – Rahm hangs on to win Mexico Open for 1st win since US Open Jon Rahm is a winner again and it wasn’t easy. Rahm has won the Mexico Open with a 69 in the final round at Vidanta Vallarta. The Spaniard now has 14 wins worldwide and seven on the PGA Tour. He says he could have done without the stress. Rahm never fell behind. But after he missed an easy birdie conversion on the par-5 12th, he suddenly found himself in a four-way tie for the lead. Brandon Wu shot 63. So did Tony Finau. Kurt Kitayama joined them. But then Rahm birdied the 14th, and he held on with pars. Golf – Champions – Alker emerges from rain for 4-shot win on Champions Tour Steven Alker is now the man to beat on the PGA Tour Champions. One week after he threw away a chance to win, Alker shot 66 on Sunday for a four-shot victory in the Insperity Invitational. The final round was delayed two hours by rain. Alker was leading by one shot over Steve Stricker. After the rain, Alker played a six-hole stretch in 6-under par to build a four-shot lead. It was Alker’s second win this year and he now leads the Charles Schwab Cup. Golf – LPGA – Marina Alex wins LPGA Tour’s Palos Verdes Championship Marina Alex won the Palos Verdes Championship on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour title. Alex broke a tie with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes for a one-stroke victory over Jin Young Ko. Three strokes behind Hannah Green entering the round, Alex closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 10-under 274 at hilly and windy Palos Verdes Golf Club. The top-ranked Ko also shot a 66. USFL – United States Football League Last Night Michigan Panthers 24, Pittsburgh Maulers 0 (1st shutout in USFL History) Tennis – Wimbledon – Nadal, Djokovic slam Wimbledon ban on Russian players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic say Wimbledon acted unfairly in barring Russian and Belarus players from this year’s tournament following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prominent players affected include reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who are all from Russia. Nadal says the war is “not their fault.” Horse Racing – Kentucky Derby leads off Triple Crown without Bob Baffert The Kentucky Derby leads off the first Triple Crown season in decades without the chance of Bob Baffert officially winning one or more of the three races. Baffert’s absence while suspended shadows over the race particularly because two horses he trained for a significant period of time are among the top contenders. Former assistant Tim Yakteen would get the credit if Taiba or Messier wins after taking over training duties. Taiba could become the first horse since 1883 to win the Derby with two or fewer previous starts. And Taiba’s jockey, Mike Smith, is looking to become the oldest jockey to win the Derby. Olympics – Salt Lake, Sapporo head race to 2030 Olympics, and maybe ’34 The Beijing Winter Olympics closed just over two months ago and the focus now turns to awarding a host city for the 2030 Winter Games. There appears to be four candidates with Sapporo, Japan, Salt Late City, and Vancouver leading the list. Interest has also been shown by Barcelona with snow events proposed for regions in the Pyrenees. An IOC technical team was in Salt Lake last week and travels this week to Vancouver. Japanese officials are planning an “All Japan” conference next week in Sapporo led by a former prime minister. Salt Lake City hosted the winter Olympics in 2002, Vancouver hosted the Winter games in 2010. Sapporo last hosted in 1972. The Winter Games in 2026 will be Milan and Cortina, Italy.
