2023 is well on the green for kiwi golfer Steve Alker. He took the opening tournament of the 2024 PGA Tour Championships by four strokes, making this his eighth Championship victory. This follows on from his second-place win in the 2023 Charles Schwab Cup. Alker told Tim Dower that you never quite know what you've got game wise coming into the new year. His win is attributed in part to a lucky shot on the seventh course, to which he said that while there is always luck involved, he was the one to make the putt and the eagle, helping with momentum. What a weekend in professional golf! Andy and Brendan get together for their usual Monday episode recapping it all, starting with an amateur winning on the PGA Tour for the first time in 33 years. They discuss Nick Dunlap's win at the American Express and if they were more surprised it happened or that it took this long. They also debate whether he should turn pro right now or play out his spring season with Alabama. Other AmEx recap subjects include JT's performance and Brandel's performance in the booth. There is also a hearty Thirst Bucket of the Week debate and a quick Tosti Tale. Then they get to Rory McIlroy's win in Dubai and his longevity of elite performance and winning. They also contrast the DP World Tour presentation with the PGA Tour's later in the day. They close with some thoughts on Lydia Ko's win, the Alker boy, and the LAAC.

Ihr seid bei On the Way to New Work - heute mit Jürgen Alker

Interest has also been shown by Barcelona with snow events proposed for regions in the Pyrenees. An IOC technical team was in Salt Lake last week and travels this week to Vancouver. Japanese officials are planning an “All Japan” conference next week in Sapporo led by a former prime minister. Salt Lake City hosted the winter Olympics in 2002, Vancouver hosted the Winter games in 2010. Sapporo last hosted in 1972. The Winter Games in 2026 will be Milan and Cortina, Italy. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Los Angeles Dodgers 6, Detroit Tigers 3 Los Angeles Angels 6, Chicago White Sox 5 Chicago Cubs 2, Milwaukee Brewers 0 Dodgers 6, Tigers 3 – Dodgers beat Tigers 6-3; Cabrera hits 503rd homer Walker Buehler pitched five scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 and overcame Miguel Cabrera’s 503rd career home run and his first this season. Cabrera hit a two-run homer off reliever Phil Bickford in the eighth inning to help the Tigers avoid the shutout. Cabrera got his 3,000th career hit last week and on Sunday tied George Brett for 18th in major league history with 1,119 extra-base hits. Buehler scattered six hits and struck out five and walked one. Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed eight hits and gave up six runs, four earned, in 5 2/3 innings. Angels 6, White Sox 5 – Trout HR, Lorenzen, Angels hold off Chisox; DH Ohtani exits Mike Trout homered, doubled and scored three runs, Michael Lorenzen pitched into the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels held off the Chicago White Sox 6-5 for their seventh win in eight games. Shohei Ohtani had an RBI as the Angels’ designated hitter. The two-way AL MVP went 0 for 3 and exited in the ninth inning because of tightness in his right groin. Lorenzen took a 6-0 lead and a bid for his first career complete game into the ninth before the White Sox scored five times in a wild finish. Ryan Tepera, the Angels’ third pitcher of the inning, retired Gavin Sheets on a bases-loaded grounder for the final out. Chicago has lost 11 of 13. Cubs 2, Brewers 0 – Stroman outpitches Burnes, Cubs beat Brewers to avoid sweep Marcus Stroman threw two-hit ball for seven innings, outpitching Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes and leading the Chicago Cubs over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. Patrick Wisdom homered as the Cubs ended a four-game losing streak. They had been outscored 20-2 in dropping the first two games of the series at Milwaukee. Stroman earned his first win for his new team in his fifth start. Pitching on his 31st birthday, he struck out five and walked one. Burnes struck out 10 in seven innings, giving up four hits. He retired the first 13 batters before Wisdom homered in the fifth. Today L.A. Angels (Sandoval 1-0) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 2-1), 2:10 p.m. Tigers and Cubs are off MLB – Batting average dips slightly, power way down across MLB The Major League Baseball batting average this April was a lousy .231, once again on pace to fall under the record low of .237 set in The Year of the Pitcher in 1968. After several years of surging home run totals, batters are slugging a measly .369 and averaging 4.03 runs per game, both lows for baseball since the strike-altered 1981 season. Ripple effects from labor strife are a suspect in this year’s offensive downturn. So, too, is the baseball, of course, along with caveats about cold weather and small samples. There’s one area of universal agreement, and it’s that pitching has become exceptionally good. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Playoffs – 2nd Round Yesterday Milwaukee Bucks 101, Boston Celtics 89 (MIL Leads 1-0) Golden State Warriors 117, Memphis Grizzlies 116 (GSW Leads 1-0) Tonight Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m. (Game 1) Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns, 10:00 p.m. (Game 1) NASCAR – Rain postpones NASCAR Cup race at Dover to Monday Rain postponed Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway to Monday. Ryan Blaney is third, Martin Truex Jr. is fourth and William Byron fifth. Dover will hold a Monday race for the fourth time in 104 career Cup races. Truex has won twice at Dover on Mondays. Detroit missed the playoffs in each of the past six seasons. General manager Steve Yzerman said the team was not renewing the contracts of Blashill, assistant Doug Houda and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko. The Red Wings have not made the playoffs since Blashill’s first season in 2015-16 when they lost in the first round. Blashill was the head coach at Western Michigan and had been with the Red Wings for 11 years with a stint as head coach in Grand Rapids, where he led the Griffins to the 2013 Calder Cup Championship. He was also an assistant on Mike Babcock’s staff. He had been tabbed by Detroit’s previous regime to guide the storied organization through a rebuild. NFL – St. Joe’s French signs with Colts Former St. Joe Bear and Western Michigan University Bronco Wesley French has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. French played and started at center for Western Michigan University, where the Broncos finished the 2021 regular season at 8-5, 4-4 in the Mid American Conference. Before that the 6’5’ 310 pound offensive lineman played under the Friday Night Lights of Dickinson Stadium in St. Joe for then head coach Gandalf Church. French graduated from St. Joe in 2015. He sat out the Broncos 2015 season earning a red shirt. He suited up for 4 games in the 2016 season, including the Cotton Bowl. He missed the 2019 season after being injured in fall camp. NFL – Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles gets released by Bears The Chicago Bears have released veteran quarterback Nick Foles two years after acquiring the former Super Bowl MVP to compete with Mitchell Trubisky. New general manager Ryan Poles had told reporters he hoped to trade Foles after signing Trevor Siemian to back up Justin Fields. He had one year left on his contract. Foles took Super Bowl 52 honors for Philadelphia. The Bears acquired him from Jacksonville in March 2020. Foles was third string last year behind Fields and Andy Dalton. He started one game with the other two quarterbacks injured, and threw for 250 yards in a win at Seattle in late December. Golf – PGA – Rahm hangs on to win Mexico Open for 1st win since US Open Jon Rahm is a winner again and it wasn’t easy. Rahm has won the Mexico Open with a 69 in the final round at Vidanta Vallarta. The Spaniard now has 14 wins worldwide and seven on the PGA Tour. He says he could have done without the stress. Rahm never fell behind. But after he missed an easy birdie conversion on the par-5 12th, he suddenly found himself in a four-way tie for the lead. Brandon Wu shot 63. So did Tony Finau. Kurt Kitayama joined them. But then Rahm birdied the 14th, and he held on with pars. Golf – Champions – Alker emerges from rain for 4-shot win on Champions Tour Steven Alker is now the man to beat on the PGA Tour Champions. One week after he threw away a chance to win, Alker shot 66 on Sunday for a four-shot victory in the Insperity Invitational. The final round was delayed two hours by rain. Alker was leading by one shot over Steve Stricker. After the rain, Alker played a six-hole stretch in 6-under par to build a four-shot lead. It was Alker’s second win this year and he now leads the Charles Schwab Cup. Golf – LPGA – Marina Alex wins LPGA Tour’s Palos Verdes Championship Marina Alex won the Palos Verdes Championship on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour title. Alex broke a tie with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes for a one-stroke victory over Jin Young Ko. Three strokes behind Hannah Green entering the round, Alex closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 10-under 274 at hilly and windy Palos Verdes Golf Club. The top-ranked Ko also shot a 66. USFL – United States Football League Last Night Michigan Panthers 24, Pittsburgh Maulers 0 (1st shutout in USFL History) Tennis – Wimbledon – Nadal, Djokovic slam Wimbledon ban on Russian players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic say Wimbledon acted unfairly in barring Russian and Belarus players from this year’s tournament following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prominent players affected include reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who are all from Russia. Nadal says the war is “not their fault.” Horse Racing – Kentucky Derby leads off Triple Crown without Bob Baffert The Kentucky Derby leads off the first Triple Crown season in decades without the chance of Bob Baffert officially winning one or more of the three races. Baffert’s absence while suspended shadows over the race particularly because two horses he trained for a significant period of time are among the top contenders. Former assistant Tim Yakteen would get the credit if Taiba or Messier wins after taking over training duties. Taiba could become the first horse since 1883 to win the Derby with two or fewer previous starts. And Taiba’s jockey, Mike Smith, is looking to become the oldest jockey to win the Derby. Mary Schuermann Kuhlman Ohio News Connection Health advocates are pressing the U.S. Senate to approve the Build Back Better Act, because it would improve Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The bill already has won House approval. It would offer 12 months of continuous coverage to children who qualify for Medicaid. Joan Alker, executive director of the Center for Children and Families, co-authored a new brief, which showed during the early Trump years, one in ten children experienced a gap in coverage over the course of 12 months. "After we saw this troubling reverse in the progress we'd made as a country in reducing the number of uninsured kids -- which came to a halt in 2017 and started going in the wrong direction -- the Build Back Better bill would really turn that around and start moving the country in the right direction," Alker asserted. Ohio's rate of children without health insurance rose a percentage point between 2016 and 2019 to 4.8%. Opponents say the $2 trillion Build Back Better Act is too costly. The bill would also permanently fund CHIP, so it would not have to be renewed every few years. In Ohio, children in families of three earning about $46,000 dollars a year or less are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP coverage. Kelly Vyzral, senior health policy associate for the Children's Defense Fund of Ohio, explained the Build Back Better Act would streamline the application process by permanently extending Express Lane Eligibility, which allows states to use information from other public-assistance programs. "If someone was to apply for SNAP, they have to go to one site. If they want to apply for WIC, they go to another site. If they want Medicaid, they have to go to a different site," Vyzral outlined. "So just combing all of those things together just makes it easier for families to access those programs." Ohio recently extended postpartum care to 12 months, and it would become permanent should Build Back Better become law. Vyzral added it also would take a team-based approach to maternal health. "It provides resources and those connections to health care for pregnant women," Vyzral pointed out. "And it brings into the picture community workers, doulas, behavioral-health specialists, social workers and other people that that helped that mother feel comfortable, feel protected, feel taken care of." The latest data show 938 Ohio infants died before their first birthday in 2018, a rate of nearly 7%. --- Thanks for listening to the podcast. Our hosts talk with veteran Kiwi professional Steve Alker who, after years toiling on minor tours, turned 50 years old and qualified for the senior Champions Tour and won his first senior tour event straight out of the gate. In closing out 2021, Steve has won more prize money than he had ever expected. What's the reason for this sudden take-off in his career? We reached him at his home in Arizona to find out.
This Victory Monday episode begins with an appreciation of Cleveland and Illinois weekend sports success, but not of Bert Bielama's coaching tactics. Then it's on to the golf, beginning with Viktor Hovland's win in Mayakoba for the second straight year. Andy offers some statistical insights into what makes Hovland so good, even in comparison to his elite peers, and where he might fall on the Rahm and Morikawa scale. The world amateur No. 1 Keita Nakajima's win at the Asia-Pacific Am is reviewed, with praise for both him and that event's continued run. There's a deep dive analysis on Steven Alker, winner of the second leg of the Champions Tour playoffs, and just the astounding cash run he's been on the past 10 weeks. It's another instance which really pulls the pants down on the Champions Tour. Lastly, they preview the final day of KFT Q-school and express sympathy for Big Mike becoming a content pawn.
My guest is the celebrated musician, Jam Alker. After touring and playing in a successful rock band, the rockstar lifestyle eventually caught up to him. Once he found heroin, Jam put his guitar down for over a decade. Eventually, after he came to the conclusion that drugs weren't his problem, but only covering the real problem that was lying dormant, he started to make positive strides in the right direction. And his desire to play music came back.Since then he has released a solo album, Sophrosyne. He is involved in the recovery community and continues to speak about and teach the positive properties of music. This interview with Jam is a great introduction to the subject of music for recovery purposes, as well as the life of a man who is recovering despite the desperation of hitting rock-bottom many years ago. Listen along.A Musician FirstJam talks about how he was a musician first and foremost before he began to experiment with drugs. Music was a great outlet for expression; it did wonders for him. But as he states during the interview, “it worked until it didn't.”Growing up in his teens and wanting to devote his life to music, Jam had a limited understanding of what being a successful musician meant. Chasing the ‘rockstar' persona, he admits that his addiction was always present, it was just manifesting itself in different ways: through his ego, his anger, and so forth. To hear this segment in Jam's own words, tune in.Real Estate, Record Label, and Recording StudioJam started making a decent amount of money while he was a musician. He was involved in some real estate, a record label, and owned his own recording studio. In addition to his other pursuits, he was drinking and doing drugs; it was just a part of the lifestyle. It was normal. As he says, the only time quitting is ever possible is when things start to seem unmanageable. While you are touring in a rock band and are still functioning fine, the lifestyle seems sustainable during the day-by-day happenings. And then suddenly it catches up with you. Once the cash came in, his lifestyle of addiction and compulsion only continued. Eventually, though, the party had to stop.Trying To Fill The VoidHe was well on his way to become a millionaire musician. He had performed in fronts of screaming fans. But the hole inside of him was still prominent and just as large as it had always been. He was miserable and turned to the one thing that he found could actually numb that misery: heroin. For more on the events that led to his turning to heroin, listen along. An Exemplar For The Recovering CommunityThere is pressure in being labeled as a musician who is in recovery; the community looks to Jam for additional support and guidance. And although there can be pressure, Jam says he loves it because it keeps him focused and holds him to a standard. He is in the position to reach out to a lot of different people who are struggling with addiction and will keep pursuing those aims.Music is MedicineJam is involved with Music is Medicine, which is a non-profit that centers on showing the healing properties of music. Basically, the organization is focused on showing how music can become a part of an addict's recovery. Through benefit concerts with educational information, resources, and peer-to-peer recovery examples throughout, the musical events are a platform that brings everyone together through music. This platform is great because it is a way to deliver information to people that might otherwise have never gotten it. For more information listen along.Strategic Playlists For Positive TriggersJam talks about how during his work with recovering addicts, music is used to frame the mindsets of those who might be triggered to take drugs again. Because music can be so powerful and elicit emotional responses like empathy, understanding, and so forth, the playlists that are made can be strategic tools used to keep recovering addicts on the right path. The moment they start to stray, the music can bring them back. For more, listen along!Recovery UnpluggedJam talks about his involvement with the organization and just how important experiential therapy is through the immersion of music. He reminds listeners not to ask “why the addiction?” But instead, to ask, “why the underlying pain?” For more on this powerful interview, tune in. Minh Le's asnwer to: Why don't I talk as much as other people? Well, I also had this problem before. In every party and conversation, I had always been the most quite person because I didn't know what to say. I was afraid that people would find me boring because I didn't talk much. Then I realize that there're these three simple solutions to this problem. Most people like to talk about themselves, what they like and dislike, their passions, etc. And it makes them feel best talking to someone who can listen. If you practice active listening, you will be able to understand people better which leads to your ability to ask open-end, interesting questions. That's how to keep a conversation going on interestingly. And by actively listening, it helps you to accumulate knowledge, experiences and stories from other people adding up to your life library and you'll be able to remember a lot of good stories well. Thus, those experiences you accumulate become your own stories to tell other people in upcoming conversations, meetings, etc. In order to become a good speaker, you first need to be a good listener. Another way to increase your knowledge in general so you can have a wide range of topics to talk about is reading. Writers sometime put their whole lifetime experiences in a book of several hundred pages, by reading a book, you absorb all of those knowledge in just a much shorter time. The more you read, the more knowledgable you are, which makes you become much more intellectually interesting. It's always a better conversation talking with someone who reads a lot more than a person who read nothing. So take at least 30 minutes a day reading book as a habit, believe me, you won't regret reading too much. Last thing, don't worry if you're not able to have much to talk about at the moment. Being a good conversationalist is all about story telling. If you pay extra attention to your everyday things and learn how to talk about them in an interesting way, that would be still much better than having an interesting story being told in a boring way. How you tell a story matters as much as your experiences and knowledge. So, to sum up, you need first to be a good listener, do reading as a habit and then learn how to tell a story well. That's all you need to make a good talk. https://qr.ae/pGXG0Z from www.Quora.com

Jam Alker is a songwriter who spins his experiences into stories. These stories, told through music, often touch on life's dark, gritty underbelly, without judgment or condemnation, but often with a message of hope. In his formative years on Chicago's music scene, Jam played virtually every stage in the city, then toured the country. Though he loved music, he lost his way. In the depths of misery and addiction, on the verge of losing everything, he reached out for help. See also on YouTube.

My guest today is Valerie Alker, a name local listeners to WGCU will remember, because she was a longtime reporter and host on our airwaves. Val got started in radio in 1983 as a DJ at WPAS AM 1600 in Zephyrhills. From there she moved onto WMNF Community Radio in Tampa where she often hosted the Women's Show. ----more----She then moved over to WUSF, where she was a reporter and newsreader, before moving down this way to work at WSFP after spending a year or so as a boat bum. Then, once Florida Gulf Coast University was built in the late 90s WSFP became WGCU and Val was part of the team that launched it. I had the pleasure of working with her starting in 2003 when I started as an intern, all the way through when I left radio for a while in 2011. She lives in Punta Gorda with her super cool husband Coop. From what I can tell via Facebook they pretty much spend their time birding and paddling and traveling to neat places…living the pleasantly retired life. It's quite surreal to be sitting down in the studio with Val again.
This week we recorded an amazing interview with musician and recording artist Jam Alker. Jam celebrates 3 years of continuous sobriety today; and our discussion covers the recovery waterfront in only the way a man like Jam can. Jam's humility and spirituality is as infectious as his music; his experience, strength, and hope begs to be heard. Buckle up my friends; and Listen up. Don't forget! “A Call to Arms: 2nd Annual Benefit for the Recovery House” tonight at 7pm at the Latvian in Chicago! www.jamalker.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-way-out-podcast/message

Listen NowIt's estimated the Affordable Care Act will add another 16-17 million lives to the 60 million Americans already receiving Medicaid. Of these current 60 million Medicaid enrollees, two-thirds receive their health care via managed care companies and over half of Medicaid managed care enrollees are in for profit plans. Concerning the quality of care for profit plans deliver, a 2011 study published by the Commonwealth Fund found for profit Medicaid plans did significantly worse than non profit plans at ensuring members receive preventive care and managing members chronic disease. Also too, for profit plans had comparatively higer administration costs than non profit plans.Ms. Alker begins this 24-minute interview discussing reasons for ever-growing Medicaid managed care plan enrollment and the issue of access to, or provider participation in, Medicaid and in Medicaid managed care plans. She assesses the state of quality data collection and explains why data is generally lacking, spotty and/or not uniformly collected. She makes comment on for profit interest in expanding to cover additional Medicaid sub-populations, what relevant ACA reforms promise, the challenges and opportunities for reducing costs since the Medicaid program as already an efficient payer, findings from her recent study of a five-county managed care demonstration in Florida and lastly provides comment on the recent decision in Arkansas to use federal Medicaid subsidies to purchase insurance in 2014 via their state exchange for citizens otherwise eligible for Medicaid under the ACA's expanded coverage provision. Ms. Joan Alker is the Co-Executive Director at the Center for Children and Families (CCF) and for the past ten years a Research Associate Professor at the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute. Her work focuses on health coverage for low-income children and families, with an emphasis on Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She has authored numerous reports and studies on a range of issues including Medicaid waivers, child and family coverage, premium assistance and is the principal investigator of a multi-year study on Florida's Medicaid program. Ms. Alker holds a Master of Philosophy in politics from St. Antony's College, Oxford University and a Bachelor of Arts with honors in political science from Bryn Mawr College.
