Oscar-nominated experimental band/composing trio Son Lux joins Score after their breakout success on EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, and as their latest film, Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS*, releases in theaters.How the solo project from Ryan Lott led to working as a trio with Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang — incorporating unique electronic instrumentation with crafty sound design (including unique percussion approaches). What it's like living in three different cities as a band, working on albums, and coming off an indie project with The Daniels to help launch a new phase for Marvel — hence the asterisk in Thunderbolts*.Plus, getting the London Contemporary Orchestra to play “drunker” at Abbey Road, and finding the ideal balance of inner creative spark and broader collaboration on a major film.Interview by Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader.For exclusive and 4K footage inside studios of your favorite composers, follow Score on YouTube Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X.Score: The Podcast is presented by Vienna Symphonic Library. Scottish-born composer Paul Leonard-Morgan (Last Breath, Cyberpunk 2077, Tales from the Loop, Limitless) is a master of different mediums — from film/television to video games, concerts and working with recording artists like bands Belle & Sebastian and Snow Patrol, among many others.His latest, survival-thriller Last Breath starring Woody Harrelson, is his second score to this story — he also scored the hit documentary about the real people. Paul details how he evolved his approach for the narrative film, including his own wetsuit dive to record metallic clinks against boats in Malibu, California, in order to create a unique, journalistic feel to the music approach.How his collaborations with legendary composer Philip Glass came about for Tales from the Loop, after they both worked with documentary filmmaker Errol Morris. Plus, how the aggressive and dark sound of Cyberpunk 2077 came together, and why writing tunes — and staying passionate under grueling deadlines — is the magic that unlocks success.Interview by Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader.For exclusive and 4K footage inside studios of your favorite composers, follow Score on YouTube Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and X.Score: The Podcast is presented by Vienna Symphonic Library. At 34, UK-based artist and composer Daniel Blumberg is the youngest person nominated for this year's Best Score at the Oscars. His work on The Brutalist, nominated for 10 Academy Awards, is a continuation and evolution of Brady Corbet's directorial talent — a longtime friend and collaborator. Daniel talks us through his formative experience at Cafe Oto in London — a hub for eccentric and inventive musical talents, which has also inspired Daniel's own highly reviewed solo albums. Daniel explains why he had to visit Italy himself to calibrate the echoes of a marble quarry, why he and Brady always envisioned the opening as a balance of tension and payoff, and why he left in raw recordings of musical “sketches” on purpose to help convey the endless pursuit of creative perfection the film depicts. Why the rising awards buzz around his unique score makes him nervous, and the unlikely (but true!) admiration for Wallace & Gromit.Interview by Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader. Oscar-winning filmmaker (The Last Repair Shop) and Emmy-winning composer Kris Bowers details a series of life experiences that propelled him to a groundbreaking score on his first animated film, The Wild Robot. How his parents' nudge into music led to him developing a “life plan” he still employs today. Why his jazz origins are so useful in the way he approaches film music. Plus, how new emotions (unlocked from recently becoming a father himself) impacted his approach to the themes of The Wild Robot. Kris dives into how he discovered a sound and music palette to channels a vibrant “wilderness” alongside an orchestral approach (with a futurist vibe), and his fond memories of working with both Kobe Bryant and Quincy Jones who influenced and inspired his creative energy to new projects. “Music that will bring Beethoven to his knees” We couldn't pass up the chance to record with BOTH visionary director Robert Eggers and composer Robin Carolan, whose period-horror NOSFERATU released on Christmas Day. (Robert confirms for the record it IS — sort of — a Christmas movie.) This interview done remotely, with Robert and Robin together in the same room in London. How Robert's breakout film THE WITCH led to a creative partnership with Robin, a UK-based music producer who had never scored a film before. Why he took 6 weeks to agree to take Robert's Viking epic THE NORTHMAN — and how it proved a trial by fire for his composing career. Robert talks about his history with NOSFERATU going back to high school (once thought of as an imitation of Dracula, but has achieved its own legendary mythological status). How Robert challenged Robin to “bring Beethoven to his knees” in the opening scene, and the decision to craft hypnotic “spirals” and haunting vocals to keep the danger close even when Nosferatu is not on screen. And why Robert's films — dripping with rich mythology — extend the traditional orchestral approach into unsettling, aleatoric music and modern sounds that carry the audience in and out of comfort. Oscar-winning composer Volker Bertelmann (CONCLAVE, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT) explains his unique approach to creating analog textures, themes, and layered complexity. How a church piano led him to a breakout hip hop album in Germany, and then into his own musical experimentation with “prepared piano” — including albums and live performances with ping pong balls in pianos. How his prepared piano techniques create sounds many believe are synths, but are actually recorded sounds carefully crafted. How his collaboration with director Edward Berger has led to a new exploration of sound. And why you should always prepare (even for an Oscars speech!) but be ready to go with the flow of the moment as a musician. Special thanks to Nate Gold and Soundbite Studios in Los Angeles. Score: The Podcast returns for a sixth season with in-person interviews filmed in 4K, and new original footage inside composers' studios. Presented by Vienna Symphonic Library In this season premiere episode, Benjamin Wallfisch breaks down his explosive blockbuster summer with TWISTERS and ALIEN: ROMULUS becoming sensations. The inside scoop on whether Glen Powell's romantic ending in TWISTERS was intended to have a kiss (which became a social media firestorm), and how Benjamin channeled Danny Elfman's iconic BATMAN theme in Michael Keaton's masked return in THE FLASH. Plus, how the score for the hit ALIEN sequel broke new ground with themes echoing sunlight in darkness and an experimental DNA strain that appropriate mutates the score for a powerfully haunting emotional reaction from audiences. My guest this week is Paul Kopf who's the product manager for the go-to orchestral sample library for most film composers - the Vienna Symphonic Library. A composer, producer, musician and singer, Paul has been a staff member of VSL since the year 2000 when the company was founded, and is an expert for the world's largest orchestral database with several million recorded samples. As a Product Manager, he's responsible for product design, beta-testing, presentation and documentation and is closely involved with customer support. Paul also does many of VSL's numerous video tutorials, and travels around the world holding clinics and presenting the latest products at music events. During the interview we spoke about the secret behind what makes VSL so popular, the process of recording the samples for the library, virtually placing the players on the stage, the piano robot, and much more. I spoke with Paul from his office in Liechtenstein. On the intro I'll take a look at a new short run vinyl presser, and an update on the AKM audio chip fire. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 82758946, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Watch This Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/2xqXUV3xp3g Call Ilio at 818-707-7222 on Tuesday, February 19th, 2019, and you can get a discount on the Vienna Smart Orchestra! (Just let them know that you watch the TAXI TV with Martin and Chuck!) There’s a steep learning curve in mastering the art of using Virtual Orchestral libraries. Understanding how the various instruments are played and what they play is not something you can learn in a weekend. Most people who need orchestral sounds every now and then typically don’t master the virtual domain, and sadly, it shows when you hear the music they make! All of us TAXI were very intrigued when we heard about Vienna Symphonic Library’s new Vienna Smart Orchestra. We want to know much more about how this product makes it easier to create believable sounds and arrangements without the super steep learning curve, and pretty inexpensively as well! We’ve invited Martin Tichy – the Marketing Director for Vienna Symphonic Library and a TAXI member – to show us some of the cool stuff that the Vienna Smart Orchestra can do. Martin will be joined by Six-Figure TAXI member, Chuck Henry, who is quite expert at creating instrumental music. Even better: Chuck is also a great keyboard player and a willing test subject for this first episode of its kind on TAXI TV! Join us for this exciting, in-depth look at what we hope might be an inexpensive solution to a problem that a majority of our viewers might have: “How do I create instrumental cues with orchestral sounds when I don’t have the chops or the budget to buy or use the top libraries?” Quoting the VSL web page: “Playing a 140 piece orchestra on the keyboard has never been easier and more rewarding. The Vienna Smart Orchestra brings the power of a large symphonic orchestra right to your fingertips. Whether you are looking for inspiration, quickly sketching a symphonic idea, delivering a final score on a deadline, or playing live on stage – this orchestral powerhouse lets you play all the sections and lead instruments at once, spread out over the entire keyboard. Create large orchestrations on the fly, without worrying about balancing and fine-tuning the instrumentation! Get creative with experimental FX presets for hybrid soundscapes and organic textures. This lean and resource-saving package delivers a perfectly balanced orchestra that’s fun to play, and at an irresistible price.” Sounds great to us! ------------------------------------ Learn More About TAXI: http://bit.ly/2mPVGYh Rub Elbows with Music Industry Pros at Our FREE Yearly Convention: http://bit.ly/2a9mwlp View Our Current Music Industry Opportunities: http://bit.ly/28JPUyd Connect with Fellow Songwriters on the TAXI Forum: http://bit.ly/2DENChs Listen on the Go with the TAXI TV Podcast: Apple Podcasts: http://apple.co/2afebwW Google Play: http://bit.ly/2a7cCQX Stitcher: http://bit.ly/2FuSTJQ Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2icUDe0 TuneIn: http://bit.ly/2DCzKrd Connect With Us On... Watch This Episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/7TEgi68uSPM At last year’s Road Rally (TAXI’s free convention), I played an exciting orchestral cue titled “Across the Valley” by member, Martin Tichy. I love that piece, and the audience in the grand ballroom quickly understood why! As I got to know Martin better, it was pretty easy to understand why his music was so good -- in particular his orchestral work. You see, his grandfather was a violin teacher, and they lived in Austria, a country revered for its classical musicians and composers. At some point, Martin became a drummer, playing in rock and country bands. His grandfather must have loved that, lol! He returned to playing violin seven years later. He also studied business and economics while in college. Martin’s pedigree served him well as worked for Warner Music and EMI, and eventually when he started his own marketing company, which led him to become Vienna Symphonic Library’s Marketing Manager. Martin understands what an orchestra is supposed to sound like, and that my friends is key to creating believable music with sample and virtual instrument libraries! Don’t miss this one-of-kind episode with a man who will get your head pointed in directions you might have never uncovered on your own. We will discuss the “floor plan” of an orchestra, articulations, bowing techniques, and anything else I can think of to get this humble, generous man to teach you things that somebody who is merely interested in how a library sounds “right out of the box” might overlook. We will play you some samples, and maybe even more importantly, I’m going to dedicate a substantial amount of time to viewer questions. ------------------------------------ Learn More About TAXI: http://bit.ly/2mPVGYh Rub Elbows with Music Industry Pros at Our FREE Yearly Convention: http://bit.ly/2a9mwlp View Our Current Music Industry Opportunities: http://bit.ly/28JPUyd Connect with Fellow Songwriters on the TAXI Forum: http://bit.ly/2DENChs Listen on the Go with the TAXI TV Podcast: Apple Podcasts: http://apple.co/2afebwW Google Play: http://bit.ly/2a7cCQX Stitcher: http://bit.ly/2FuSTJQ Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2icUDe0 TuneIn: http://bit.ly/2DCzKrd Connect With Us On...
