Academy Award®-nominated composer Kris Bowers joins guest host Jon Burlingame to discuss his stunning orchestral score for "The Wild Robot," directed by Chris Sanders. The composer dives deep into how he crafted the film's sonic landscape, incorporating orchestral textures, electronic elements, and unique percussive sounds. He also shares insights into his collaboration with director Chris Sanders and how becoming a parent influenced his emotional approach to crafting the film's original score.“Chris [Sanders] talked about the role that music was going to need to play in this film... He already knew there were going to be these long stretches where we would have little to no dialogue. And he was trusting that music could help tell the story in those moments… Because for him, the idea of kindness as a survival technique, that was very, very key to the story... Really this idea of music needing to have this vulnerability, this warmth, clear melodic statements, and then also having the ability to go from small intimate moments to really big, huge action sequences.”—Kris Bowers, Composer, "The Wild Robot"Be sure to check out “The Wild Robot,” now available to stream and on Blu-ray, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.The soundtrack to “The Wild Robot” by Kris Bowers is also available to stream on Apple Music in Dolby Atmos! And don't miss our previous episode on the sound of “The Wild Robot,” with writer and director Chris Sanders. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. Oscar-winning filmmaker (The Last Repair Shop) and Emmy-winning composer Kris Bowers details a series of life experiences that propelled him to a groundbreaking score on his first animated film, The Wild Robot. How his parents' nudge into music led to him developing a “life plan” he still employs today. Why his jazz origins are so useful in the way he approaches film music. Plus, how new emotions (unlocked from recently becoming a father himself) impacted his approach to the themes of The Wild Robot. Kris dives into how he discovered a sound and music palette to channels a vibrant “wilderness” alongside an orchestral approach (with a futurist vibe), and his fond memories of working with both Kobe Bryant and Quincy Jones who influenced and inspired his creative energy to new projects. Awards season has arrived in the form of the Golden Globes nominations. The awards, which honor both movies and television programs, is often viewed as a preview of the upcoming Oscars. In this week's episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz go over the list, focusing largely on the movies, which tend to shine brightest at the ceremony. But they also take time to review a few of the TV shows, including the great, but rarely funny "The Bear," which is again in the comedy or musical category. Season 5 of The Film Scorer Podcast continues to pick up steam as Kris Bowers (Bridgerton, Green Book) joins the show! The Academy Award winner and nominee (who was just nominated for a Grammy for his score to The Color Purple a few days ago) recently scored the hit animated film The Wild Robot. As such, Kris and I spend much of our conversation talking about his score, which is both adventurous and a tearjerker, and filled with thematic exploration. The conversation touches on the challenges of scoring for animation, the increasing amount of space the film made for Kris's score, how it let Kris run wild with his passion for thematic and melodic scoring (drawing a number of Star Wars parallels), and plenty more. Kris's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms. The Wild Robot is currently in theaters, with a home release imminent. You can find out more about Kris on his website.

Min 5.

Robert Winfree, Mark Radulich, Zachary Strobel and Chris Owen present their The Wild Robot 2024 Movie Review! The Wild Robot is a 2024 American animated science fiction survival film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders, produced by Jeff Hermann, and executive-produced by Sanders's longtime collaborative partner Dean DeBlois. It stars the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. In the film, Roz (Nyong'o), a robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, must adapt to her surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife, and become the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose.Sanders first encountered the original The Wild Robot book through his daughter and years later was offered an opportunity to direct a film adaptation at DreamWorks. The film uses a hand-painted aesthetic, inspired by classic Disney animated films and the works of Hayao Miyazaki. It would be the final film to be animated entirely in-house at DreamWorks, as the studio would begin relying heavily on outside vendors after 2024. Kris Bowers composed the film's score, marking his first score for an animated film. The Wild Robot premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 27, 2024. The film received critical acclaim and has grossed $54 million against a $78 million budget.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Episode 4 of Opening Life Podcast is a conversation about a movie about a book. It's also about the book's author, Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, Isabel Wilkerson. The film, by director Ava DuVernay is called Origins. It's a sensitive and powerful telling of Isabel's journey writing the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. The translucent soundtrack is by Kris Bowers, whose music-writing credits include the film Green Book, and the second season of Bridgerton. As is our custom in our podcast, we feature the music prominently. This conversation between our guest Michael Jordan (a great soul but not a basketball player!) Brittany, and Kyle could serve as an excellent preparation for seeing the film, or as a conversation catalyst for those who have already seen the film or read the book. Both Origins and Caste are not to be missed. They are windows into one of humankind's most enduring and life-diminishing practices.  You can find other life-opening articles on our website at nexusonline.org

With co-director Kris Bowers he also brought to life the short documentary film A Concerto Is a Conversation, which was an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021. His latest documentary, The Last Repair Shop — the focus of this episode — is nominated at this year's Academy Awards for Best Documentary Short Subject. Once commonplace in the United States, today Los Angeles is by far the largest and one of the last American cities to provide free and freely repaired musical instruments to its public schoolchildren, a continuous service since 1959. The Last Repair Shop grants an all access pass to the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80,000 student instruments in good repair and in it the film blends the unexpectedly intimate personal histories of the repair people with emotional, firsthand accounts from the actual student musicians for whom their instruments made all the difference. In this episode host Michael Shields and Ben Proudfoot expound upon what music and access to instruments means to the lives of the children in Los Angeles while considering how the power of music has changed the lives of those who passionately labor in the repair shop. They talk about how the promise of the American Dream manifests itself within the documentary, the message of hope that is abounding in the film, and so much more. Ultimately this episode celebrates an inspiring documentary that serves as a passionate love letter to Los Angeles and to those unsung heroes who gave countless others the gift of music. Director Blitz Bazawule joins his composer Kris Bowers to discuss their new adaptation of “The Color Purple.” You may remember the original filmed adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, directed by Steven Spielberg, from 1985. This version is actually an adaptation of the hit Broadway show, which won two Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Our guest host, music journalist Jon Burlingame, returns to the Dolby Institute Podcast to speak with Kris and Blitz about their collaboration on the film, which began very early in the filmmaking process. “I brought Kris on very early because I really believe in my entire team being on the same page right when we begin. I don't believe in silos as a filmmaker and, ultimately, I fancy myself more of a conductor than anything else. I need my entire symphony to start building some kind of harmony, and I can't wait till the very ending to bring on my composer when so much has already been discussed. So bringing Kris on also helped [him] understand how we were approaching music from a macro perspective, what were the intentions around these choices that then he could then expand into the scoring process. And why Kris? I mean, he's the coolest cat. That's just it.”—Blitz Bazawule, Director, “The Color Purple” (2023)Be sure to check out The Color Purple now in theaters, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®, where available. Please subscribe to The Dolby Institute Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. When Colin's tears look this beautiful, perhaps we should tempt scandal more often? * Ways to Support Strikers During the WGA & SAG-AFTRA Strikes Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund Donate to Emergency Financial Assistance and Disaster Relief Fund for SAG-AFTRA Members Donate to The Union Solidarity Coalition Donate to the MPTF Emergency Fund Change.org petition for below-the-line strike workers Deadline: Information about below-the-line workers petition Business Insider: How to support SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes Blog: What can fans do while WGA & SAG-AFTRA are on strike?
