This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Waymo's newly announced expansion ahead of the World Cup, the suddenly accelerating deterioration of the Uber/Waymo relationship, and the partnerships that actually matter for Uber's autonomous future. As Waymo expanded their U.S. service area by 1,400 square miles across 11 cities, Uber continued to amplify both their direct and indirect attacks against Waymo in the media and in a self-published report about deploying autonomous vehicles.Even as the deterioration of the relationship spreads into the news, Walt notes that the divorce narrative is already largely priced into Uber's stock, but the more interesting question is what happens next with Uber's remaining partners.Nuro recently opened an engineering and partnerships office in Munich, home to BMW, with Lucid notably absent from the press release and personally-owned autonomous vehicles mentioned directly. On the WeRide earnings call, the company outlined European expansion plans including Slovakia and made the case for a unified Level 2 to Level 4 platform.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Walt discussed Volvo Autonomous Solutions' new Dallas-to-Houston lane and what the true definition of autonomous and what defines supervised.Episode Chapters00:00 Waymo's World Cup Expansion03:59 Waymo's Unforced Error05:08 The Waymo/Uber Divorce Narrative Goes Mainstream14:51 Nuro Opens Munich Office20:26 WeRide Eyes a Unified L2-to-L4 Platform22:47 Volvo Autonomous Solutions Dallas-to-Houston Lane23:49 What Defines Driverless31:39 Foreign Autonomy Desk32:04 Next Week--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday. Just got back from 4 days in Austin, Texas testing Tesla's Robotaxi network. It was very interesting to show the app to my friends and see their reactions and compare the experience with Waymo/Uber. Robotaxi demand was very high because of low prices, and this mean that about 50% of the time I was unable to call a car due to "high service demand", the other 50% of the time Robotaxi was available with a ~15 minute wait time. I'm STOKED to see this expand! It may take some time, but this will truly transform transportation as we know it ... especially if the price sticks! Austin Lyons adds that Alphabet's (GOOGL) Waymo already made significant traction and makes the case for personal autonomous vehicles. Ever wondered what happens when technology designed to serve us starts serving other masters? This week's episode dives deep into the troubling intersection of technological advancement and corporate interests that often leave users vulnerable.Uber's rollout of Waymo autonomous vehicles in Austin marks an exciting milestone in driverless technology, but our analysis reveals persistent safety concerns these companies would rather you didn't focus on. With Waymo expanding beyond its controlled testing environments into everyday transportation, we explore what this means for passenger safety and the future of mobility. When Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki told concerned parents they simply shouldn't let their kids use his platform if they're worried about safety, we were stunned. With 80 million daily users (40% under age 13), this hands-off approach to platform safety reveals how even spaces designed primarily for children can prioritize growth over protection. Our cybersecurity expert, Nick Espinosa, joins us to unpack this shocking stance and what it means for digital parenting. The most chilling revelation comes from former Facebook employee Sarah Wynn Williams, who claims Mark Zuckerberg was willing to implement extreme censorship systems for the Chinese government and even deactivate a Chinese dissident's account at their request – all to gain access to the Chinese market. This disturbing case study shows how far tech giants may go when profit motives clash with democratic values. From North Korean spyware infiltrating the Google Play Store to AI search engines that are wrong a staggering 60% of the time, we're tracking the technologies that threaten your security and access to accurate information. We close with a look at Microsoft's upcoming handheld gaming device codenamed "Keenan" that aims to challenge Nintendo's dominance in portable gaming.Subscribe to our podcast, join us on BlueSky@TechTimeRadio, or visit techtimeradio.com to stay informed about the technology stories that impact your digital life.Support the show

YouTuber, writer, and coder Sophia Tung recaps the week's most important AV news, including Waymo's big Bay Area expansion, multiple Tesla controversies, Travis Kalanick's robotaxi regrets, Rivian's hands-free driving debut, and more. This week's episode is shorter than usual, but hopefully it serves as a good introduction to Sophia and her point of view on AI mobility. She'll be podcasting more with us in the future. As a reminder, the first Ride AI summit is taking place on April 2 at Neuehouse in Hollywood, California. We already have an amazing group of speakers lined up, including Amnon Shashua of Mobileye, Gill Pratt of TRI, and other top decision makers from Waymo, Zoox, Wayve, Apollo Go, Nuro, and more. There's a ton of excitement around the fact that this will be the first event of its kind that people will be able to take a fully driverless Waymo robotaxi to, making it the perfect opportunity to inaugurate the second chapter of this technological space. The on-stage conversations will be focused on this shift, from experiments and ideas to delivering real-world realities, and how to reboot conversations with stakeholders in the public sector, capital markets, media, and beyond.Tickets are currently on sale here: https://ti.to/rideai/ride-ai-2025
