Discomfort doesn't automatically denote danger. Identifying the difference and holding those nuances takes practice. Let this episode be part of the lesson plan. Deborah Ooten, PhD., is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center, and she's the first person to successfully merge the teachings of the Enneagram with the Spiral Dynamics evolutionary model.  I'm a fan of both models; my co-host Anne Remy isn't. Friction can rub us the wrong way AND expand our capacity for complex conversations. As Anne says, it's possible to engage with concepts that you vehemently disagree with, express concerns, explore differences, and come out the other end while still having a reasonable opinion of one another. GUEST BIO Deborah A. Ooten, PhD, is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center. She has her doctorate in clinical psychology, is trained as a craniosacral therapist and is a Certified Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition.  What if the triumphs of a powerful city could gradually slip away? In this episode of Casting Through Ancient Greece, we explore how Athens' dominance began to erode, not through immediate disaster, but through a series of missteps and lost opportunities. Once at the height of its military and political influence, Athens' advantage waned as strategic errors and unsuccessful campaigns chipped away at its position. From remarkable victories, such as the capture of over 120 Spartiates, to the costly setback at the Battle of Delium. As we unravel the political turmoil within Athens, the spotlight is on Thucydides' trial and subsequent exile, a move driven by internal rivalries and the ambition of figures like Cleon. Explore the broader ramifications of Brasidas' triumphs, which sparked revolts and coerced Athens into a temporary truce with Sparta in 423 BC. We dissect the fragile peace terms, the breaches that ensued, and the precarious nature of maintaining a truce amidst the chaos of war. The political machinations and the struggle for control within Athens reveal the deep complexities and the relentless pressures of leadership during this tumultuous period. The episode culminates with a detailed look at the military and diplomatic maneuvers that defined this phase of the Peloponnesian War. Follow the Athenians' strategic repositioning to capture Mende and besiege Scione, supported by Perdiccas of Macedon who thwarted Spartan reinforcements. Uncover the shifting alliances within the Boeotian League and the regional conflicts that further complicated the war. From the failed Athenian attempts to reclaim territories to the nuanced interplay of power, this episode offers a comprehensive understanding of the intricate military strategies and political manoeuvres that shaped the course of this historical conflict. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, August 8, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:After crashing for a few days, the Indian equity markets recovered on Wednesday. Sensex and Nifty were up by more than 1.1 percent.Ram Sahgal writes that much of yesterday's recovery could be attributed to a change in investor sentiment. The Bank of Japan's deputy governor soothed investors by saying that the sell-offs were temporary, and adopted a dovish stance. Markets in Japan crashed after the BOJ increased its interest rates by 25 bonus points, and its effects were felt in bourses all over the world — including India. However, market experts told Ram that any more conflicts arising in the Middle East could yet again lead to more selling of stocks.Bangladesh was born in 1971, after being carved out of Pakistan. It was a nation grappling with poverty and socio-economic challenges and several coup attempts. However, it achieved a remarkable feat in just about four decades when it emerged as the world's second-largest garments exporter. Bangladesh capitalized on the availability of labour to produce garments at cheaper rates and became an exporting hub, with the sector making up about 85% of its total exports. As the country continues to combat domestic unrest, Payal Bhattacharya explains the country's economic progress and the reason why a stagnant economy led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.Tata Motors sells 80 percent of four wheeler electric vehicles sold in India today. But it's not resting on this laurel. Its latest model the Curvv is priced rather aggressively. Alisha Sachdev writes that such prices, combined with the reduced GST on EVs, has helped Tata corner such a large share. Alisha spoke to Sailesh Chandra, MD of Tata's passenger vehicles division. Chandra avoided calling this pricing as strategic, which is competitive with Tata's petrol and diesel versions. Tata hopes to buck the trend of slowing four wheeler sales with this launch — and its pricing will definitely help.If you were planning on becoming an investment advisor as a career option, you'd have to register with Sebi to pursue it. Becoming a registered investment advisor or a research analyst is a long process — or at least was, until Monday. Late on Tuesday evening, Sebi came out with a draft proposal that would ease the requirements for one to become an RIA or an RA. Neil Borate and Anil Poste break down these requirements, and tell you how this notice is a shot in the arm to India's beleaguered investment advisory landscape.Kota - was the mecca for any competitive exam aspirant. Millions of kids flocked to the coaching capital of India to try and become an engineer, doctor, or civil servant. But of late, the inflow of students has reduced greatly. A couple of years ago, nearly 200,000 students used to come to Kota. This year, coaching centres peg that the number has reduced to just around 70,000, writes Devina Sengupta. But it's not just teachers and coaching institutes that are suffering: an entire ecosystem that was built to support the large influx of students is now floundering as well. Devina presents an on-ground report from Kota about the current situation and a historical review of the town. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Japan has had a very low degree of mobility in employment.  Large companies hired staff straight out of school or university and expected they would spend their entire working life with their employer.  That has worked for a very long time, but we have hit an inflection point where this is less something we can expect.  Mid-career hires were frowned upon. If you bolted from your employer, you had almost zero chance of joining a competitor. You entered a dark forest and had to find your way through the brambles and undergrowth to meet out a living on the lower rungs of a netherworld of small firms willing to take you on. In 1997, the venerable Yamaichi Securities blew up and a lot of competent, hard working finance industry people suddenly found themselves in the street without a job.  Other firms in the same sector employed them, because they were skilled and this was the first tear in the fabric of the stigma of the mid-career hire.  The Lehman Shock on September 15, 2008 added another slash to lifetime employment in Japan, as many people lost their jobs.  The 2011 earthquake, tsunami and triple nuclear power plant explosions disrupted many industries, throwing people out of work.  Covid did a similar job on particular industries like tourism and hospitality as borders closed. The downturn in population has meant there is a strong demand for workers with a growing limitation on the supply side.  This throws up options for staff which were not there before and it impacts the loyalty factor of the worker-employer construct.  Thirty percent of young people in their third and fourth years of employ, after having been trained by the company who hired them, jump out and go somewhere else.  No loyalty and no qualms about leaving their employer. A client of mine sent me a note the other day about doing some training and as an aside, he mentioned that one of his key people involved in that decision, who had been with him for 14 years, was suddenly leaving.  This is very disheartening because you lose the experience, their contacts and the continuity with their colleagues and clients.  That takes a long time to re-stitch together. Sometimes it is the stupidity of our own construction.  An organisation I used to work for had a new leader appear.  He was not the usual standard of experience or capability for that complex work and decided to fire one of the staff who had been with the organisation for decades.  He had no conception of the network he was letting walk out the door.  Twenty-plus years of deep relationships with buyers in his industry was just vaporised.  It is not something obvious you can notice, like a chair has gone missing in the office, but the loss to the business is still there and manifests itself later when you least need it. What can we do about this?  Sadly, not much.  We do our best to align the direction and values of the organisation with the staff's interests.  It won't always be a perfect fit.  Also, their interests change.  They now have aging parents, get married, have children, start to think about retirement, etc.  Covid has crushed many companies and those pressures can speed up changes, which lead to staff leaving. When things are rolling, there is less taste to leave because the rewards are coming thick and fast.  When things have been tough and you are crawling out of the hole together, the rewards are all in the future. Two of Dale Carnegie's stress management principles come in handy here. One is to cooperate with the inevitable and the other is to expect ingratitude.  It is inevitable that in a strong demand economy for staff, we will see people moving more and more than in the past. The old mid-career hire stigmas have become less potent and the era of the “free-agent” employee is upon us.  We have to face the reality and not pine for the good old days of a desk groaning under the weight of resumes of people seeking employ.  I should have photographed that phenomenon, because I will never see it's like again in my working life. The ingratitude aspect of no loyalty is also a bitter pill to swallow.  We do our absolute best to be fair with our people and give them as much as we can of the rewards, but they still up and leave us.  The departure event is one struggle, but our reaction is the bigger struggle.  If we get caught up in expectations which are too high or unrealistic for a changing market, then we are setting ourselves up for depression and stress. If we believe we have been fair, but it hasn't been enough, then we should get over it and go find a replacement, no matter how fraught, expensive and difficult that may be.  We also had better get used to it, because this has already become our reality from now on.   Loyalty Is Now Tenuous In Business In Japan Japan has had a very low degree of mobility in employment.  Large companies hired staff straight out of school or university and expected they would spend their entire working life with their employer.  That has worked for a very long time, but we have hit an inflection point where this is less something we can expect.  Mid-career hires were frowned upon. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the deaths and destruction in Gaza are tantamount to war crimes and many South African leaders believe Israel's control over the Palestinian territories resembles apartheid. Andy Liu of the Light Years podcast is back yet again; for a record ninth time, in fact. His task this time? Helping Aaron preview the Golden State Warriors as they attempt to bounce back from a 44-38 campaign in which just six games separated them from 11th-place Utah and they were eliminated by the Lakers in the second round. Andy and Aaron discuss last season's challenges, summer acquisition Chris Paul's fit, Draymond Green's leadership, Andrew Wiggins' value and Klay Thompson's future, among other timely topics.      7:31-8:39: “They tried to downplay it. They tried to make it seem like they would get through it. But that was the punch that ruined the season. It ruined Draymond Green's standing as a leader. Nobody respected him or wanted to listen to him after that. … It wasn't 100% Draymond Green's fault, but any time something happens that's like that, you end up not having the same voice you did if you're Draymond Green. And I don't think he's had the same voice for a while now. … I think it just makes things very, very difficult for him to be that guy for this team. I think it works if you're Steph and Klay. It doesn't work if you're Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga and some of these younger guys who don't necessarily want to hear it from him.”      17:35-17:47: “Steve's Kerr biggest job this season is to find a way to get Chris Paul to buy in on coming off the bench. Because if Steve Kerr can't do that…this team is cooked.”   20:53-21:14: “I think this thing is tenuous. I do. … The first 10 games are gonna tell us a lot about where the Warriors are gonna be the rest of the season.”       23:54-24:14: “That's part of the game that maybe last season they weren't good enough getting Steph the ball because Jordan Poole wasn't passing, Kuminga didn't know how to play, [James] Wiseman didn't know how to play, JaMychal Green didn't know how to play Warriors-style basketball. It's hard. And I think Chris Paul is one of those people that's smart enough in the NBA to just pick up off the bat, easy.”     28:46-29:21: “Look, he's not gonna be the No. 2, but he's such a good player as the No. 3. It's very reminiscent of what Aaron Gordon did in the NBA Finals, where if you're gonna leave him open, he's gonna make you pay. And he's gonna be so good defensively. He does all the glue stuff. Shout-out to the Warriors, 1 for trading for him, taking the risk, and then 2, identifying that he's gonna be able to do all those things. And of course Andrew Wiggins has to be the one that wants to do those things, right? I think of Kuminga as someone, and again different phases of their career, but Jonathan Kuminga could be Andrew Wiggins, pretty easily.”    37:17-39:04: “I think, moving forward with Mike Dunleavy [Jr.] and Kirk Lacob, they're not losing the Xs and Os or the strategic path of where they want to go. I think they're smart enough to do what [former Warriors president and GM] Bob Myers had done the last decade. What I do think that they're losing is the relationships, the kind of mending of relationships that Bob Myers could do, how Bob Myers can calm Draymond down and build a bridge between Draymond Green and Steve Kerr, build a bridge between Steph Curry and the young guys and kinda get people bought in, get [owner] Joe Lacob bought in. … Now, one thing I do think that may happen is that if this Chris Paul thing doesn't work, Bob Myers has never really shown an inclination to make big moves at the trade deadline. I think that changes with Dunleavy and Kirk [Lacob].”   41:34-41:40: “I think Klay will probably, most likely take a little bit less to come back to the Warriors.”   47:22-47:40: “All of these guys are pseudo-contenders, right? There's just a ton of question marks for all of these guys, and I would hesitate to put the Warriors in a tier below the Lakers or a tier below the Suns or a tier below the Miami Heat. It just doesn't make sense to me because everybody has the same questions.”

The Fall of 2006 was a tenuous time for Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick. In just seven seasons on the job, he had seen everything from taking an unheralded young franchise to a Super Bowl, to a revolving door at quarterback, and an ownership change that would severely shake up his professional life. The team's new owner was a self-made billionaire from unassuming beginnings named Steve Bisciotti, and it was the fact that he and the head coach of his new team were more alike than different that would make their dynamic a difficult one to navigate. Billick's act was easy to take when the results on the field were positive; when things went the other way, the charm had a tendency to wear off a bit. Bisciotti now had an organization to run, and a lot of important choices to make – in order to find and follow the best path forward for the Ravens, he had to determine whether Brian Billick was actually a great coach, or all (straw reebok) hat and no cattle. Before he could even decide on that however, he had to suss out whether the two of them could get past some personal differences that were more prominent than ever now that they were working directly with one another. Tenuous times indeed.
