This week we turn our attention to the world of work and our invitation is to think about how we can collaborate even better - especially when we think about hybrid working patterns. We talk about flow, feedback, trust, empathy and radical candour - amongst other things. My guest is John Monks. John is the co-founder of Curve where he leads the facilitation and coaching practice. He's clocked up many years working with teams in organisations as diverse as NYPD, Coca Cola, the UN and Comic Relief. Over his career, John has shown that a combination of facilitation and coaching is the best way to help organisations solve their own problems and come up with great ideas. An ardent believer in the power of workshops to achieve the impossible, he's trained many hundreds of people to be experts at designing and delivering workshops and collaborations. John is Co-chair of the ActionAid UK board, a mentor on the Cambridge Judge Business School MBA and guest speaker at the WHU Otto Beisheim Business School in Dusseldorf. He speaks at events for corporates, government bodies and civil society groups, and at public events such as the WebIT summit, Digital Shoreditch and the UN-sponsored Design for Social Innovation & Leadership program.
On this episode of the Growing With Purpose podcast, Paul Spiegelman talks to Eric Rieger, founder and CEO of WEBIT Services, a people-focused IT strategy, service, and support company based in Naperville, IL. After working for other software companies with poor culture, Eric decided to take matters into his own hands and start his own company. 25 years later, WEBIT Services is a Better Business Bureau accredited company, and has made it onto the Inc. Best Workplaces list. “There's harmony and vision and unity with the leadership team, which then translates down to the rest of the company,” says Eric. “The gears are really starting to align, and we're gaining traction because of it.” Eric moved his company to open book management in 2016, and as of last year, transformed WEBIT into an ESOP. He wanted to make sure that he had an exit strategy in place that would benefit the people who have made his company a success over the years. “My purpose for starting the company was to help make lives better, not enrich my own pockets.” With the help of mentors, peer groups, and being involved in therapy, Eric has come to recognize the impact his parents have had on both his personal and professional life, both good and bad. His father was a huge positive influence in his early life. As a truck driver (that's ‘transportation engineer' to you) with very little education, Eric's father broke down stereotypes and took great pride in the role his job had in maintaining the country's economy. And he did this all while upholding his morals and being generous with those around him. Eric's mother, on the other hand, was a narcissist who expected perfection, and it took Eric some time to realize that he was perpetuating that onto his colleagues and employees, and so had to make a change to end the cycle. Eric's life has been full of instances when he's had the courage to take action. From cutting ties with his mother, to taking control of his health after an unwelcome diagnosis, to forming the ESOP, Eric has learned the importance of taking care of oneself in order to take care of others. In this episode, listen as Eric discusses with Paul how WEBIT makes technology that works for people (not the other way around), the importance of both mental and physical health to be the best leader possible, and being conscious of making both ‘yes' and ‘no' decisions.

Today on the podcast I'm joined by Eric Rieger with WebIT. Eric has been running his MSP for 25 years and has learned many lessons through his growth. One that has had a profound impact on his business is using a system called open-book management. This is the practice of being highly transparent with your finances. Sharing as much financial information as possible with your staff and using it to instill a sense of ownership and awareness of the company finances. We also talk about his experience in developing an employee stock ownership program or ESOP. Eric's insights here are super valuable and align very closely with what I've observed in leveraging open-book management practices. So please enjoy this enlightening conversation with Eric Rieger.

My guest today is Plamen Russev, Founder of Webit, author of Power to the People — the New Marketing and the man who successfully rebranded a whole city — not a small feat in any capacity. I’ve had the privilege to be both a panelist and a moderator at Webit’s events and I am always quite impressed by the quality and level of the people that agree to participate. I’m very excited to finally have a chance to talk to Dr. Russev about how he came to be so well connected, what it took to shift a 20K attendee event to virtual in a matter of days, what it really takes to run successful events as well as the need to be more responsible to ensure a sustainable future for humanity. Tips Having a strong team can make or break a launch — keep the right people around you and rely on their expertise. Community, team, and platform are the three most important aspects of a successful virtual event. Growing a network is hard work — Giving back, forgetting your ego, and trying to make a difference play a large part. Don’t put your reputation and health at risk for an in-person event. When it comes to social media, it’s all about authenticity and being yourself. Matt Webster from WebIT and ListOnce is my guest in this episode of the Proptech Podcast. WebIT is a first generation proptech, started about 20 years ago and one of its first contributions to real estate tech in Australia was a portal website for agents which went on to become realestateview.com.au. So it has a legacy of developing tech that pushes our industry forward and teaches us the importance of embracing new concepts. It's most popular product is ListOnce which builds the data architecture that links real estate agents, CRM's, websites and the myriad of apps and technologies that agents now use and brings them all together so agencies can do more with their data. This was a delightful conversation with Matt who is a genuinely lovely person, about how data infrastructure is the essential plumbing that you need as an agency. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theproptechpodcast/message

Podcast main page: www.mspvoice.com/ Show-notes: www.mspvoice.com/msp-voice-episode-66/ Guest: Eric Rieger Company: Webit Services This week’s guest is Eric Rieger from Webit Services out of the Chicago area. In business since 1996, Webit actually started under a different, less fortunate name which Eric explains. Eric had a few different careers before starting Webit which helped him to prepare for running his own business. Besides MSP Webit also helps companies with business intelligence and analytics and has developers on staff. Inspired by the book “The Great Game of Business” by Jack Stack (Amazon), Eric has adopted Open Book Management at Webit Services. We discuss at length the concepts of Open Book Management and how Webit has implemented it in their business. If you want to learn more, check out the website for The Great Game of Business here: https://www.greatgame.com/ One of the other concepts that Eric talks about is the power of purpose. He mentions a presentation by Clark Gey at the annual Gathering of Games conference. You can find it on YouTube here. After returning from the conference Eric and his team adopted their purpose, “keeping American business secure and productive”. Eric puts this into more perspective about how what they (and MSPs in general) do to keep the economy running.

The Achilles' heel of network IDSs lies in the large number of false positives (i.e., false attacks) that occur: practitioners as well as researchers observe that it is common for a NIDS to raise thousands of mostly false alerts per day. False positives are a universal problem as they affect both signature-based and anomaly-based IDSs. Finally, attackers can overload IT personnel by forging ad-hoc packets to produce false alerts, thereby lowering the defences of the IT infrastructure. Our thesis is that one of the main reasons why NIDSs show a high false positive rate is that they do not correlate input with output traffic: by observing the output determined by the alert-raising input traffic, one is capable of reducing the number of false positives in an effective manner. To demonstrate this, we have developed APHRODITE (Architecture for false Positives Reduction): an innovative architecture for reducing the false positive rate of any NIDS (be it signature-based or anomaly-based). APHRODITE consists of an Output Anomaly Detector (OAD) and a correlation engine; in addition, APHRODITE assumes the presence of a NIDS on the input of the system. For the OAD we developed POSEIDON (Payl Over Som for Intrusion DetectiON): a two-tier network intrusion detection architecture. Benchmarks performed on POSEIDON and APHRODITE with DARPA 1999 dataset and with traffic dumped from a real-world public network show the effectiveness of the two systems. APHRODITE is able to reduce the rate of false alarms from 50% to 100% (improving accuracy) without reducing the NIDS ability to detect attacks (completeness). Emmanuele Zambon pursued an MSc degree from the University of Venice, Italy, in Computer Science with a thesis about anomaly-based Network Intrusion Detection Systems. He has been working for an year at Information Risk Management division in KPMG Italy. He is author and researcher of the POSEIDON paper. Damiano Bolzoni pursued a MSc degree from the University of Venice, Italy, in Computer Science with a thesis about anomaly-based Network Intrusion Detection Systems. He has been working for a year at the Information Risk Management division in KPMG Italy. He is author of the POSEIDON and APHRODITE papers and gave talks at IWIA workshop, WebIT and many security conferences in Netherlands. Presently, he is a PhD student at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. His research topics are IDS and risk management."
