Aaron and Karl learn just how hard it is to track a man who's been dead for almost a century. Fresh off a stunning legal victory over U.S. Steel, Victor Power the young lawyer becomes Victor Power the crafty political leader. Using deft strategy, brilliant oratory, and a keen sense of timing, Power barges into the municipal election and upsets the longest serving mayor of Hibbing to that point, Dr. H.R. Weirick, an acolyte of the Oliver Iron Mining Company. But he didn't do it by himself. Power's Progressive Party ticket was elevated by immigrants and merchants who had grown tired of company rule and wanted improvements to this rough and rowdy mining village in the middle of nowhere. Vic also had his sister-in-law, Dottie Power, who quietly became a groundbreaking progressive leader and businesswoman in her own right. In just a few days Vic Power started a revolution in Hibbing that would reverberate all the way to corporate headquarters in New York. A new philosophy ruled Hibbing, one that led to a catchy saying, “If Vic Power has a pig, everyone in town gets a ham sandwich.”

Note: next week we're talking about HBO's "Beware the Slenderman." (Homework is optional!) Pardon us. Please. We're looking into the latest twist in the court martial of Serial season two protagonist Bowe Bergdahl. We're joined by friend-of-the-show USMC Judge Advocate James Weirick (ret), host of the Military Justice podcast. Now that former-President Obama declined to pardon Bergdahl, his lawyers say he can't get a fair trial with President Trump as Commander-in-Chief. Weirick will explain the arguments in the docket, why they submitted a video presentation, and he'll also provide some insight into the clemency granted to Pvt. Chelsea Manning. Also, Lara gives a quick review of the new true crime podcast, Gone at 21. One of her positives: "it's short." Then we'll talk about a documentary premiering on PBS's Independent Lens, "The Witness" (also available on Netflix). It reexamines the infamous 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, the NY woman killed as 38 neighbors alleg edly watched but did nothing. Fifty years later Kitty's brother, Bill, digs into a crime he (and we) don't really know the truth about...including the myth that so many bystanders did nothing. And in the Crime of the Week, one Florida man makes a big mistake when seeking his own presidential pardon. This episode is sponsored by PrepDish. Go to PrepDish.com/stories. This week on the Law School Insider we have James Weirick who is a retired Marine Lt. Col. and Judge Advocate (JAG) who spent much of his career in the military justice system and continues to act as an advocate for this as well as an advocate toward continued reform in the military justice system.
The crew discusses what officers and enlisted drink at every stage of their careers. Everyone shares some of their best drinking in the military stories. Also, Weirick has an update on the Bowe Bergdahl trial.
Lauren, Weirick, and Nate examine military regulations, race, and double standards following a controversy over a photo taken by 16 black female cadets from West Point. Also, Lauren interviews John Lee Dumas about how veterans make natural entrepreneurs. And Weirick reads more comments from Task & Purpose readers.
When news broke last week that Bowe Bergdahl's legal team had scored a victory in his case, we weren't sure we understood exactly what happened. So, Kevin reached out to our trusty military legal eagle James Weirick for a quick run-down. As a bonus, we get confirmation that Weirick is, in fact, the manliest man to ever man-up. Also, the PBS documentary Peace Officer hooked us in but also left us with some questions. As we tackle those, we also wonder, WTF is our local PD doing with a tank? (BTW, you can find out what we're going to be talking about before our episodes drop if you sign up for our newsletter! You can do that right here.) Plus, Lara gets corrected correctly, we answer a couple of listener inquiries, and the Crime of the Week posits...is it EVER too late to hand out some justice? Task & Purpose Radio talks Donald Trump and how he favors with the military and veterans community. Weirick is out this week after he was injured falling off a horse (no, really, that happened), so Task & Purpose’s Editor-in-Chief Brian Adam Jones joins the podcast.
The crew discusses the increase in troop numbers in Iraq and Syria and why the White House keeps denying, or at least refusing to say outright, that we have boots on the ground in combat. Nate and Weirick take Task & Purpose’s quiz, “Quiz: Which Of These 7 Infantry Guys Are You?” Lauren interviews the podcast’s producer Army vet Karl Morand. And Weirick reads comments from our loyal fan base.
Nate, Weirick, and Lauren discuss the final episode of Serial and rate its overall ability to tell the story of Bergdahl and the war in Afghanistan. They each try to answer the question: What should we actually blame Bowe Bergdahl for?
It's yet another a super long episode! (Sorry about that.) But hey, at least there are t-shirts you guys can buy. Here's the link to those. For civilians, is there something about Serial Season 2 that neither we nor Sarah fundamentally get? Rebecca and Kevin have a talk with JAG Lt Col James Weirick (ret), one of the hosts of the Task and Purpose Radio podcast. Weirick shares his take on Bowe, how the legal case against him is playing out, and what military listeners are saying about Serial Season 2. He also confesses to stalking Sarah Keonig in a "non-criminal" way. We also answer a few listener questions (including one from Michael Jackson's old house!) and Kevin makes yet another terrible transition into our sponsor's ads. There's also a meaty discussion about our latest TV obsession, "The People vs OJ Simpson." What started as a cheesy, escapist miniseries has become a riveting character study - and maybe a feminist manifesto?. So a guy walks into a sushi bar with a giant snake. And he says, "This sounds like it could be the Crime of Week." Let the good times maki roll. James Weirick's webpage Task & Purpose website (podcast) Support the show.
Lauren, Weirick, and Nate discuss the revelation by Serial that the Army never officially investigated whether any service members were killed in the search efforts to recover Bergdahl after he walked off base. Also, Weirick talks about his in-person encounter with the women of Serial.
Producer Karl Morand discusses stolen valor with Weirick and Nate and whether the rise of stolen valor videos is helpful or hurtful to the veterans community.
Lauren, Nate, and Weirick discuss the latest episode of Serial, which covered the Bergdahl prisoner swap, Taliban reconciliation talks, the question of which would take the lead in conflict: the military or diplomacy.
Lauren, Weirick, and Nate discuss whether Bergdahl should have been let into the Army in the first place after washing out of Coast Guard basic training. They also debate Sarah Koenig’s “Come to Jesus” moment in the latest episode of Serial. Also, Weirick explains the latest on Bowe Bergdahl’s court-martial, which has come to a full stop.
This week on Task & Purpose Radio, Lauren Katzenberg interviews former Army Spc. Cody Full, who was members of the same three-man fire team before Bergdahl disappeared. Lauren, Nate Bethea, and James Weirick discuss a new report released by the Government Accountability Office on hazing in the military. Weirick reads some real messages that Task & Purpose has received to its Facebook page
Nate and Weirick rip into statements made by Bergdahl on the most recent episode of Serial about what it means to be a soldier in Afghanistan in 2009.
Added bonus: Listen to Weirick’s outtakes from when he was setting his mic and thought no one was listening.
This week, Lauren Katzenberg, James Weirick, and Nate Bethea discuss Serial’s coverage of Bowe Bergdahl’s treatment and attempted escapes during his first year of captivity by the Taliban. Weirick provides historical insight into the military’s code of conduct on how to behave if captured, Nate explains how the Army failed to control the strange rumors circulating about Bergdahl while he was a POW, and Lauren seeks more skepticism from Serial as they lay out Bergdahl’s personal account.
On episode 1 of Task & Purpose radio, host Lauren Katzenberg gives you a rundown the latest news from the Bowe Bergdahl case with co-hosts James Weirick, a former judge advocate in the Marine Corps, and Nate Bethea, who was an officer in Bergdahl’s battalion in Afghanistan. Weirick and Nate weigh in on Bergdahl’s motivations for launching the DUSTWUN in June 2009 when he walked off base in Paktika province, Afghanistan. We also discuss how the team behind the viral podcast Serial decided to focus on Bergdahl for season two and its implications for the case. Finally, what does it mean when the only person with access to Bergdahl is Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal?
