In 2001, Sarah Turney's sister, Alissa, went missing. Nearly two decades later and no arrests in the case, the police told her they could no longer help her and she needed to get media coverage for the case. So, in 2019, Sarah started The Voices for Justice Podcast as a way to tell Alissa's story. In August 2020, an arrest was made in the case and Sarah's efforts were recognized by the Maricopa County Attorney. Since the arrest, Sarah has shifted her focus to advocating for other cases in need of justice. In today's bonus interview, Sarah reflects on what she's learned along the way, and answers critical questions from her own experience as both a victim's family member and a true crime media creator herself. Why might a family member tell their story on a podcast with exploitative tendencies? How does Sarah create a safe space for victims and their family members to share their stories on Voices for Justice? What could ethical true crime content look like? And what can true crime media consumers do to push the genre into a more ethical direction? I was so honored to learn from Sarah, and I hope you enjoy this bonus interview while we are on a break from regular season episodes. You can find Sarah Turney on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter (@saraheturney). Make sure to also check out Sarah's podcasts Voices for Justice and Disappearances. Marc Deveraux Host of Vancouver True Crime Since August 3, 2019, I have been the host and creator of Vancouver's True Crime Podcast. I explore the topics of psychopathy, cults, serial killers and the missing and the murdered. I advocate for MMIWG and do my part to bring awareness to this horrific situation in British Columbia. I was born and raised in Vancouver, and I have dual United States citizenship and have traveled to over 40 major cities in North America working in corporate sales. I realized that my home town had a disproportionate number of serial killers and extremely dangerous predators that have used the province of British Columbia as a hunting ground. The highway of tears in northern British Columbia. Vancouver Island has had numerous suspicious disappearances and unsolved murders. Metro Vancouver is rife with homicides 600 unsolved cold cases, the majority gang related. The Downtown East side of Vancouver has been the hunting ground of dangerous sex offenders and serial killer since the 1960's. The Boozing Barber to Robert Pickton.B.C. Has the highest number of missing people in Canada three times the national average. On this edition of Parallax Views, Dutch sociologist M.B. Schuilenburg joins us to discuss his books Hysteria: Crime, Media, and Politics and The Algorithmic Society: Technology, Power, and Knowledge. In this conversation we discuss the history of the idea of hysteria from it's origins in a clinical setting used, often times, against women to its usage by philosophers like Hobbes and Foucault and the concept of mass hysteria around hot topics like immigration. In addition to all of this we discuss the empirical research Schuilenburg did for the book, the Rotterdam race riots, anti-immigrant rhetoric and the Dutch politician Geert Wilders, the concept of security in Western society and its different connotations, Zygmunt Bauman's idea of "Liquid Modernity", neoliberalism and globalization, hysteria and the collective sense of a loss of control, positive security/hysteria vs. negative security/hysteria, the phenomena of moral panic, algorithms and social media as they relate to mass hysteria, big data and discrimination, and much, much more!
According to the medical world, hysteria is a thing of the past, an outdated diagnosis that has disappeared for good. Hysteria: Crime, Media, and Politics (Routledge, 2021) argues that hysteria is in fact alive and well. Hyperventilating, we rush from one incident into the next - there is hardly time for a breather. From the worldwide run on toilet paper to cope with coronavirus fears to the overheated discussions about immigration and overwrought reactions to the levels of crime and disorder around us, we live in a culture of hysteria. While hysteria is typically discussed in emotional terms - as an obstacle to be overcome - it nevertheless has very real consequences in everyday life. Irritating though this may be, hysteria needs to be taken seriously, for what it tells us about our society and way of life. That is why Marc Schuilenburg examines what hysteria is and why it is fuelled by a culture that not only abuses, but also encourages and rewards it. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, criminology, philosophy and all those interested in hysteria and how it permeates late modern society. Lenora Claire, the Erin Brovovich of stalking, joins us for her second powerful episode. So often our society misunderstands stalking to the extent that it's often a theme in comedians' standup. And yet, real life stalkers are frequently terrifying, dangerous and nothing to joke about. And with a justice system that does just short of nothing to help survivors, we need a bright light of hope. And that's where Lenora Claire comes in as our bright light in a sea of darkness. In this episode, she discusses how you can reduce your risk of having a stalker, best steps to take directly after being sexually assaulted, along with legal changes she is attempting to push through our justice system, such as her app concept with geofencing that would allow survivors to track their stalker. Finally, she tells us about Lenora Claire LLC, her company designed to consult with the entertainment industry, specifically on True Crime shows, so their treatment of survivors is ethical and kind while working with them. Please join us for this episode of Open Deeply that proves that super heroines are real. Lenora Claire is a survivor of multiple violent crimes, a member of the Los Angeles District Attorney Crime Victims Advisory Board, the CEO of Lenora Claire Consulting LLC, as well as an entertainment industry professional. After becoming the fixation of a dangerous stalker, Lenora began to speak out not only for herself but for the other 7.5 million Americans currently being stalked who find themselves without resources and living in fear. Lenora's case has been featured on 48 Hours, Dr. Oz, Crime Watch Daily, CBS News and other media outlets. Named “The Erin Brockovich of Stalking” by Vice, Lenora has helped countless people obtain restraining orders. She has served as a human shield in court and lectured on the subject of risk minimization at schools, on television and on podcasts. With fellow advocate, Jess Gilbert, they formed The Innovative Justice Alliance to propose legislation and develop methods of prevention in the technology space. Lenora also works as a consultant for television and film, advocating for victims and their families to ensure respectful depictions of their most traumatic and vulnerable moments of their lives. “Black People in Britain are often referred to as a minority. Yet the media and the government love to amplify our influence when it’s negative”With Movies like ‘Blue Story’ coming out. Along with the negative press. its easy to forget ‘The Truth’ is; with Black people only making up around 12.25% of the UK it would be IMPOSSIBLE for black people to be involved with the majority of Killings in the UK. But IT’S ALL MARKETING. And people of Colour are losing this marketing game in the UK. It’s gonna take strategy and and mindfulness to win the war against racism. Things get back to normal in the Crime Writers' world. They discuss the perils of doing bad accents and explain why they can't do audio book versions of their own books. A true crime update (add your own echo): Burke Ramsey has followed through on his threat to sue over the CBS special on his sister's murder. Looks like the case will focus on one comment from one person. Then the focus shifts to the new investigative podcast from Australia, "Phoebe's Fall." We know that Phoebe Handsjuk dropped 12 stories down a garbage chute, crawled out, only to bleed to death from injuries from the trash compactor. Was it a suicide attempt? Was it a drunken misadventure? Or was it something more nefarious? So far, the Crime Writers have mixed opinions. Footnote: for another strange how-did-she-get-into-that situation, check out the case of a 21-year-old Chinese tourist who drowned in a hotel water tank. Checking in with some of the other leading true crime podcasts, in "In The Dark"'s penultimate episode, the Sterns County sheriff is confronted with their pitiful clearance rate. And the trial of Justin Ross Harris is finally underway in "Breakdown." In the Crime of the Week, don't block a driveway in Australia...even if it's your own. NEXT WEEK'S HOMEWORK: From PRX, the new Offshore podcast. From Partners in Crime Media: a new mystery podcast, "The Disappearance Podcast."
