This week, we are joined by co-host/producer of the ~other~ TF (Trashfuture), Nate Bethea. Nate is also a co-host and/or producer on What a Hell of a Way to Die, Lions Led by Donkeys, and Kill James Bond, all podcasts in our regular rotation. Given his vast repertoire of podcasts, we spent a good amount of time getting into the weeds of it all, from doing research/showrunning on a pod, to the editing process (he is a producer, after all), to growing their following; whether its viral video content or utilizing existing networks or doing live shows. We also talk about his pathway to podcasting, from his (regrettable) article talking about his connection to Bowe Bergdahl and co-hosting a companion podcast to the Serial Season 2 about the case, to the present day, now having co-hosted a podcast about why not to join the military for 7 years. We finally get a little bit into his own preferred podcasts, from Boonta Vista, to a specific episode of The Nod, to NYT/Serial's The Trojan Horse Affair, and touch on his decision to leave America and his experience/opinion on the politics of the two countries since. In practice of our new “segments” format, we put (most of) the Boyz only talk at the end so you don't have to skip thru it, but at that point we have a nice little discussion about sports, including the NBA offseason deals and Alex dropping a foul ball at the Mets game.

We then go on to discuss one of our favourite tweets of all time, Tim Stanley's infamous 2012 Bow Tie tweet, in which Stanley condemns the English, and in particular, early morning builders, who laughed at him for wearing a bow tie. Be sure to check out her podcast as well, "Breaking Cadence: Insights from a modern day conscientious objector." Rosa earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Saint Mary's College of California. Her shorter creative work has been published in CALYX, River Teeth, Cutbank, Grain, the Los Angeles Review, and other literary magazines. When she’s not writing creatively, Rosa is writing cold hard facts as a journalist, leading peer writers' groups, or playing music. While a solo singer-songwriter at the moment, Rosa founded the band Hunters with Will Decher in 2011. Over the course of five years they put out three albums: White Lies, Treeline and We All Go Up the Mountain Alone Together, before taking a break to focus on other projects. Rosa lives in Castro Valley, California with her writer, professor, and craftsman husband, Nicholas Leither, and their two young children, Itasca and River. Nate Bethea is co-host of the podcast A Hell of a Way to Die, a funny, often bracing show about the intersection of leftist politics and American military culture. While serving as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from 2007-2014, and deploying to Afghanistan in 2009-2010, Bethea reports that he “lived the Army values so hard that I became a socialist.” In this conversation, he discusses the hazards of being openly left while on active duty, the disturbing rise of MAGA-style fascism among veterans, and how his experience at war deepened his political commitments:   “Leftist veterans aren't coming from the perspective that everyone should be in the military, but what we're saying is that we've seen some of these policies put forth in the military, we've seen things like universal health care, things like the GI Bill covering your full tuition—we see these things, and we think, why can't everybody have this? And we also have seen the waste and the stupidity . . . the containers full of shit burned in Afghanistan, vehicles valued at $300,000 abandoned in Iraq . . . I mean, if you take ROTC paying for my undergrad, and the GI Bill paying for my M.F.A., and if I had done a Ph.D., all of that tuition put together, and all the cost of living allowance they've given me, would not equal the cost of one stupid Humvee that we gave to the Iraqis and then ISIS stole, and then we bombed it with a bomb that cost more than the Humvee.”

Then, [19:40] we sit down with Afghanistan war veteran Nate Bethea (@inthesedeserts) to explore how progressives should situate themselves in relation to the military (spoiler: plenty of people who serve are leftists, if not as overtly so as right-leaning troops). We also ask, is it OK to criticize the military, and who should be doing the criticizing?
