According to Lauber, Kouri left cash in a house she was flipping and Lauber left pills in a firepit at the same property — a system that kept both women physically separated from the handoffs.Lauber also described a phone call days after Eric's death in which she says she told Kouri to please confirm the pills weren't for him. According to Lauber, Kouri said they were not and that Eric died from a brain aneurysm. Phone records presented in court showed Kouri texted Lauber three days after Eric's death asking about her drug connection. The fourth buy was paid for with a $1,300 check Lauber says was labeled as construction cleaning for work she never performed.Defense attorney Wendy Lewis challenged Lauber's credibility extensively. Lauber confirmed regular methamphetamine use during the period of the alleged deals, prior drug convictions, pending charges, and a failed drug court stint. Lewis highlighted that Lauber initially told investigators Kouri asked for oxycodone, not fentanyl, and played a recorded investigator meeting where Lauber was told to provide information that would ensure a conviction. Lauber's drug source has also changed his account of what he sold. Cross-examination continues Friday.The morning session established the forensic foundation. Toxicologist Dr. Brianna Peterson confirmed Eric had five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in his blood, with markers for illicit fentanyl. No hydrocodone was detected. A state crime lab scientist tested 19 evidence items and found no fentanyl on any of them. Fourteen days before jury selection and the Kouri Richins case just got even messier — for the prosecution.In a motion filed Sunday, defense attorneys Kathy Nester and Wendy Lewis accused Detective Jeff O'Driscoll and investigator Travis Hopper of threatening and harassing state witnesses. The filing includes text message screenshots allegedly showing O'Driscoll warning one witness she'd be arrested and held in a jail cell if she didn't cooperate with trial prep. He reportedly told her to show up "every day at 8:00" for the entire five-week trial when she asked for a specific date. And yes, he allegedly threatened to bring "a catch pole for the dog."A second witness with immunity claims Hopper told them their deal was conditional on continued cooperation — despite having already given a full statement two years prior.This adds to mounting questions about how this investigation was conducted. O'Driscoll's credibility was already challenged in January suppression hearings over whether he knew Richins had legal representation. And the prosecution's drug source, Robert Crozier, has recanted his claim that he sold fentanyl to Carmen Lauber — now saying it was OxyContin.Kouri Richins has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder in her husband Eric's March 2022 death. She has maintained her innocence throughout and remains in Summit County Jail awaiting trial. Prosecutors say substantial evidence remains. This free workshop is designed to support individuals living with Parkinson's disease and their care partners through meaningful experiences with art and creative expression to make connections—between participants, the works of art, and through shared moments of reflection and making. Trained staff members guide participants through slow-looking exercises and conversations about selected works in the Barnes galleries followed by a hands-on art-making experience led by a teaching artist. The next sessions will held October 11 and October 25. Bill noted the Barnes had already dipped into art and health, their Art, Well-Being, and Medicine workshops help medical students and healthcare professionals develop a more empathetic and humanistic approach to patient care. The Barnes was founded by Dr. Albert Barnes, a physician who financed his collection through his patented medicine discovery. Wendy discussed Parkinson's and how important self-expression and social connection is to those living with it and their caregivers and she described their programming that allows them to stay active and engaged. This Day in Legal History: John Jay CommissionedOn September 26, 1789, John Jay was commissioned as the first Chief Justice of the United States, marking a foundational moment in the establishment of the American judiciary. Nominated by President George Washington and swiftly confirmed by the Senate, Jay took the helm of the newly formed Supreme Court just one day after the Judiciary Act of 1789 was signed into law. His appointment signaled the beginning of the federal judiciary as a coequal branch of government under the U.S. Constitution.Jay was already a prominent figure in American political life, having served as President of the Continental Congress, co-author of The Federalist Papers, and Secretary for Foreign Affairs under the Articles of Confederation. As Chief Justice, he led a court that initially had little authority or docket, with its first session delayed until February 1790 due to logistical difficulties and lack of cases.Despite the Court's limited power at the time, Jay helped lay the groundwork for its future role.
