It all begins here when Shane Sams was a sophomore at the University of Kentucky and Jocelyn Sams came to campus as a freshman at just 17 years old!   It all begins here when Shane Sams was a sophomore at the University of Kentucky and Jocelyn Sams came to campus as a freshman at just 17 years old! Let's go back to 1997. Picture this: Jocelyn turns 17 years old on March 27th of her senior year of high school. Just months later she moved from her small coal-mining hometown in western Kentucky to move to the big city of Lexington. She could not wait to be there that August, cutting down every minute until she would officially be a Wildcat. Shane Sams had gotten on UK's campus just a before. He had dreamed of going to the University of Kentucky his entire life. After all, he too was from a small town. Which one? Corbin. Better known for their railroads, moonbow, and the birthplace of KFC, (of course). Now, Shane didn't exactly work hard in school to get the grades to grace UK's campus but nevertheless found himself walking by William T. Young every day. For both of them Lexington was an escape of small town life - an escape that would become the most fateful place they would ever find themselves. Now, Shane didn't start out at UK. His first year was actually spent as a BCTC student. He could live in the dorms, but his school was actually in the Kroger Field parking lot. He didn't magically mature into the model student. He hardly ever went to class and had a crazy roommate that ended up flunking out to boot. Shane found himself almost failing too during his first semester. That was until one after during Christmas break. Shane's dad offered to take him to his insurance office in Corbin. When Shane released they had hit the interstate going south he knew something was wrong - his dad saw his report card. Nearly 20 minutes later they found themselves in Williamsburg, Kentucky home of the University of the Cumberlands. The college that Shane had tried oh-so-hard to not attend. It was the exact opposite of everything She loved about living in Lexington. After his dad continuously drove past every door and window (and excess flower) on campus he finally opened his mouth and said, “pretty campus, huh? If your grades aren't better next semester you're going to be going to school here so get used to it.” (Can we just thank Shane's dad for not allowing him to screw this whole thing up)? Shane found a girl. Not THE girl, but a girl that could help him get through Algebra his second semester. It wasn't his best semester ever but it got him through his freshman year so we'll take it. Here it comes: the fall semester of 1997. Jocelyn was living in the dorm right beside Shane. But of course meeting them would have been too easy. If you know Shane Sams, it's par for the course. There was however a time when Shane visited his friend from high school that happened to be in the room right beside Jocelyn. One fateful day there was a knock on the door from the most beautiful girl Shane Sams had ever seen. Jocelyn was there asking to borrow the phone book - that's right. An actual phone book. Jocelyn walked away and ordered her pizza or whatever it was and went back next door. Nothing special happened yet not until Jocelyn's sophomore year and Shane's junior year.

78. Secrets from an Influencer Marketing Expert

What businesses say about themselves is no longer credible, and influencers have become highly credible sources that customers look to and trust instead. In this episode, Shane Barker, an influencer marketing expert, is going to share some of his secrets about influencer marketing.  About Shane Barker Shane Barker is a UCLA professor. He teaches a class about personal branding and how to become an influencer, and he's developing a course that will be available for anyone to take online and learn the things he teaches in his class. Shane is a consultant. For example, he created a startup that reached more than a $25 million valuation in two years. His consulting practice specializes in influencer marketing, product launches, content marketing, sales funnels targeted traffic, and website conversions.  He consults with multiple fortune 500 companies, and he has some A-list celebrities as clients, including Angela Bassett and Shane Sparks. Shane writes for Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Huffington Post. The infographics he's created have been viewed more than 350,000 times and have been featured in more than 950 articles and publications. He publishes the marketing growth podcast. Marketing insider group named Shane one of the top content marketing influencers, and Salesforce named him one of the industry's top influencers. He also has published a series of ebooks. 2 Influencer Marketing Secrets    We don't have to have a million followers.   We don't have to have a crazy, huge audience. Shane knows of influencers who have followings in the thousands, but they have courses where they are making hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. We also don't need to be on every social media platform. We can still be successful without having millions of followers on every platform.   Influencers need to educate brands.    About a year and a half ago, Shane did a big event, renting out the floor of a hotel with Amazon and 35-40 brands. They did the training, and Shane realized there was a big disconnect between brands and influencers. He needed to get in the middle and educate people on both sides so they could start having a lot more successful influencer marketing campaigns. Many influencers don't understand the value they have. This can be a problem because they don't know how much to charge brands for their sponsorship or how to campaign products for brands. They often wait for brands to come to them instead of pitching their services to brands. Influencers should be able to educate the brands on why their services are valuable. To do this, influencers should be able to say “I've worked with these brands, and here's the data from their campaigns.” They should be able to show brands the number of clicks or views their content usually receives. They should be able to tell them exactly what they are going to do for their campaign: a blog post, podcast episode, YouTube video, etc. If they are going to put content on their website, they should be able to tell brands, for example, “My website indexes well for these certain keywords, and 10,000 people look at it monthly.” Influencers should know their data so they can tell brands exactly what their value is. Shane said, “The good thing about influencer marketing for a brand is there are millions of potential influencers. But the problem is, how do I know who's better than the other person? It's the influencers that are educated and say, ‘let me show you how to put this campaign to really show you how this was successful.” Shane's Passion: Helping Small Businesses Shane is passionate about many things, but right now he is focusing on his passion to help small businesses. Currently, he's working for the SBDC (Small Business Development Center), trying to help businesses that have been put in a difficult situation because of COVID. He aids them in transitioning to online from offline, or in figuring out how they can have other revenue streams or keep their doors open. Shane wants to give small businesses the information he has learned in the last 25 years.  He started working with the SBDC because a friend of his is a director for them. They went out for drinks, and Shane said it was like a Jedi mind trick. “I had one beer, and then all of a sudden, by the end of it I was working for him.” When Shane told his team he was really excited to work there, they were skeptical, especially when they learned Shane would be taking a significant pay decrease. Shane told them it wasn't about the money though; it was about helping people. Shane's heart is with small businesses. He's always had small businesses and been able to grow them. Unfortunately, with where he's at in his career, he is too expensive for most small businesses to afford his help. Shane thought that wasn't fair because he has knowledge he can give to people for free. But now he can do that with the SBDC. Shane realizes that entrepreneurs are strong and can get through difficult times. But, it becomes more difficult when you have something uncontrollable like COVID or government. It's not that these entrepreneurs aren't working hard enough; it's that there are other forces stopping them.  Shane's Entrepreneurial Journey Chevy's Mexican Restaurant Shane started off as a busser for Chevy's Mexican restaurant when he was 16. Eventually, he moved up from bussing tables to becoming a waiter, then a server, and then they wanted him to become a manager. Instead of being the manager, Shane traveled around the country opening new restaurants.  Hot Pad While Shane was in college, he started a business called Hot Pad, which sold reusable, non-toxic heat packs. He opened kiosks, got investors, hired freelancers for the logo and the website, and put the whole project together. They started doing different kinds of hot pads: ones for the shoulders, ones for the back, etc. The business did really well. After graduating from CSU, Shane started his own business. There was one business he took from 0 to $25 Million in 2 years with 130 employees and 3 or 4 locations. That business was actually sued by the Attorney General for about $60 Million. They ended up settling on the case, but Shane learned from that experience more about being an entrepreneur than a degree from Harvard or Yale ever could. Ever since then, Shane has been doing consulting, helping businesses drive traffic and convert traffic into online sales. Influencer Marketing Soon, Shane jumped into the influencer space. He had a client by the name of Zoe Rodriguez. She was a fitness influencer making about $40,000 a month, and Shane's business helped take her from 400,000 to 1.6 million followers. She already had a very engaged audience, so when they redid her website, logo, and sales funnels, it accelerated the growth. Content Marketing  Shane now writes for 150 different websites including Forbes and Huffington Post with the help of his team. He also has a podcast that just reached number 33 on iTunes for the top business podcasts.  How does he do it? So how does Shane manage all of his ventures? For many years, Shane was the bottleneck in his processes, always wanting to approve everything. But, there were simply not enough hours in the day for him to catch up. He's learned the value of delegating, having really good processes in place, and having a strong team. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Shane for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Influencers are credible sources with reach that customers trust. We don't need millions of followers to be successful in our influencer marketing. A small, but engaged, following can often give us a lot of success. Both brands and influencers should be educated about all the services an influencer can provide. An influencer that is knowledgeable is more likely to be hired by brands to promote their products. Writing for a lot of other credible organizations is a great way to establish our own credibility. Delegating, having good processes in place, and having a strong team can help relieve entrepreneurs' stresses and give them more free time to do more of the things they love. So wherever you are listening today, enjoy this week's episode of the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast.     Show Notes Shane's Story Shane Sams' story starts in the small southeastern county town of Corbin - best known for the world's last existing moonbow and of course the place where Colonel Sanders started Sanders' Cafe, home of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Corbin is ran by coal and trains. All the millions of tons of coal from eastern Kentucky runs right through that little town. When Shane was growing up there was less than 5,000 people living there! Shane grew up in the city limits of Corbin (not really a city, but for lack of a better word). Living in a rural area Shane never really grew up around a ton of technology or big business. People were school teachers, railroad workers, coal miners, the local hospital, or worked at retail stores. Shane is actually the 4th of 5 boys in his family. The boys have significant age gaps between them. Shane's oldest brother is actually 19 years older than him! His younger brother is 3 1/2 years younger than him - huge age gaps there! Shane's dad was an insurance agent that had his own office where he sold auto insurance. Have his own business is probably where Shane was influenced into being a business owner and self-employed. His dad had worked for other people and decided it was better to work for himself so he didn't miss the important things in life like going to Shane's ballgames. Sound familiar? Shane's family was not poor but they were certainly middle-class. They didn't have everything in the world but he got to see his parents work so hard and what true work ethic looked like. Shane didn't always follow that work ethic himself in high school. He kind of stayed in a bit of trouble. But, he was actually very smart he just hated the structure of school (he'll be the first to tell you he hates rules). He did love football and being the producer of his high school new team! After a soul-crushing injury basically ended Shane's football career in high school he became a completely different person. He got away from the jock-culture and became the mellow and humble person we know and love today! (And, most importantly a person that Jocelyn would fall in love with).   Jocelyn's Story Jocelyn grew up in a small town in flat land western Kentucky - like Corbin, it is very much a coal mining town. Jocelyn's parents were very young when they had her in 1980. So, from a very young age they had to work hard to make sure their family was provided for.  Jocelyn has one younger sister that is 3 years younger than her. They grew up in a small neighborhood with friends that lived next door and spent all day with those kids. Jocelyn's dad was a cable engineer and he is still at it! Jocelyn's dad is a super hard-working person. She can remembers he was always working extra jobs. Being an engineer he was super smart! So, people would hire him on the side to do things like installing satellite dishes, audio-visual type things. Jocelyn's mom would always help with homework when they got in from school. She was very diligent in working with the girls, making sure they were reading (which wasn't hard because they loved it), all while making sure all the stuff around the home was tended to. She didn't do a lot of traveling with her family growing up. Their traveling consisted of going to the bigger cities  in the area like Bowling Green.

The Holzer Files season 2 premiers on Travel Channel Thursday, October 29. I had the chance to talk with Dave Shrader, Cindy Kaza, and Shane Pittman about the season's premiere episode, "Phantom Hand," as well as the season overall. I also had the chance to ask questions from a couple of friends of mine. What did Dave have to say about demons and angels? How does the automatic writing come to Cindy? The "Phantom Hand" episode is haunted history mixed with true crime. Can we expect to see more of that in the other episodes this season? What unnerved Shane more: when Cindy said she felt like she was looking through the eyes of a murderer or when Dave assigned him to investigate the pit at the train museum? When Shane was in the pit, the camera catches something crazy. Did Shane see it at the time, or only upon review? Why are Dave's favorite colors periwinkle and chartreuse? All answers are revealed in this episode that was literally a lot of laughs to make. It's fun to watch the stars of The Holzer Files, but it was even more fun getting to talk with them. Shane is the founder of Dark Horse Rowing, the leading educator of indoor rowing education and career training for fitness professionals and athletes.  Shane has a BA in Business Administration, a certified CrossFit Kettlebell Certificate, a CrossFit rowing certificate and is CrossFit Level 1 Certified, Concept 2 Master instructor, and a certified ACE Group Fitness Instructor.  How did Shane get to be where he is now in the business that he created? (3:26) Shane was never the best student or athlete in high school.  But he loved sports too much to give it up and eventually his grades and sporting abilities approved.  When Shane started University he overslept for baseball tryouts and ended up trying rowing and fell in love with it instantly.  Going to championships during his university years, Shane ended up being introduced to CrossFit through Stefan Rochet. So from there, Shane’s rowing team was using CrossFit as strength training for their rowing. Coming out of University, Shane was too light to be a heavyweight rower and too heavy to be a lightweight rower so he was stuck in purgatory so to speak for a bit.  Jumping over to CrossFit, Shane says he luckily fell into the lap of Invictus a decently competitive gym.  Competing in CrossFit and simultaneously coaching rowing made Shane realize that there was a desperate need for people to learn how to use the rowing machine.  This led him to teach several CrossFit Rowing seminars over several years and through that and enough exposure he ended up creating Dark Horse Rowing.  The Business of Rowing (8:15) There has truthful not been a lot of research done on the rowing market.  British rowing did some market research three or four years ago which was more to show what their future goals were. But looking at the number of machines sold, it’s about 4 million and that’s just Shane’s guess.  These machines last forever, Shane calling them lifetime machines. But then there’s the water rower and hydro which are new players to the game and all of the inexpensive amazon rowing machines, Shane estimates that they’re actually sitting at close to the ten million. And that was talking pre-COVID, which has essentially now cause the purchases in rowing machines to spike. So the rowing industry is growing in popularity swiftly.  Is rowing a standalone fitness offering? Can people completely devote themselves to rowing alone and stay healthy and fit for the majority of your life? (17:18) Shane says rowing is such a diverse exercise.  It is low impact and risk-averse. Meaning there is little risk of anything negative happening to you.  You can train your strength, your conditioning, your lactic threshold, and even your coordination. Is it the one thing you should choose? That depends because the thing you choose to stay healthy and fit is ultimately the thing that you will love doing every day for the rest of your life.  Shane says yes it can keep you healthy and fit for however long you pursue it, but so many other things could also do that for you.  So find what works for you. What does Shane envision gyms are going to be like in 2 years? (34:10) Any gym that physically exists is going to realize that an online feature will become a wholly integrated part of their business.  This is because too many people at this point have tasted what home fitness can be.  Many people however will still enjoy that experience of going to the gym and engaging with people.  So, therefore, physical gyms will still exist but will start to rapidly integrate online and digital training into their business models.  Dark Horse Rowing Dark Horse Rowing was the pursuit of Shane Farmer’s passion for fitness and rowing. They strive to create the best possible experience for athletes so they can continue to provide support for a lifetime.  Resources Connect with Shane: LinkedIn Dark Horse Rowing: Website Connect With Eric: LinkedIn

Shane has interviewed the likes of Jim Collins, Esther Perel, Daniel Kahneman and some mutual guests like Robert Greene and Annie Duke for the show. The knowledge Project is just one of the notches under Shane’s hugely impressive umberella. Shane is also the founder of Farnam Street, an online learning community that Shane founded whilst working for a leading intelligence agency in Canada that can be found at fs.blog. Farnam Street is dedicated to mastering the best of what other people have already figured out, that now gets over 1 million page views per month. Shane is an absolute learning machine, so much so that I’ve made it one of my life goals to go and see this guys bookshelf with my own eyes, and to emphasise this point, Shane told me that in 2013 he read 153 books in one year. I view Shane as a North star when it comes to Education, and speaking to Shane has made me want to improve even more. When Shane isn’t interviewing leading scholars and notable people, you may find him managing Syrus Partners which is an investment company operating out of North America. Farnam Street also released a book called The Great Mental Models which covers general thinking concepts. Shane & I discuss Volume 1 in today’s episode which is all around general thinking concepts. Now why is this important? As the saying goes, to the man with a hammer - everything looks like a nail. Shane has over twenty years of tenure as an executive in the medical industry and it was through this work that he became frustrated with the healthcare options in America.  When Shane injured his back and needed medical care, he experienced the shortcomings of the healthcare delivery system first-hand when he received a balance bill from an urgent care center. He was able to negotiate down his bill, but the experience left him wondering what other Americans do in similar scenarios. This led to his discovery that many Americans are “functionally uninsured” and there’s no standardization of cost or transparency in the healthcare system.  Shane was thus inspired to create a new platform that filled a gap in the market: affordable basic healthcare. Through this inspiration, Hooray Heath was born. Hooray Heath offers a low-cost, practical healthcare plan that is supported by technology and a robust provider network of Urgent Care and Retail Clinics. It is unconventional - which is exactly what Shane wanted. In a country where 75% of the population makes less than $50,000 a year (and many work part-time), Hooray Health offers peace of mind, basic healthcare, no surprise bills, and a fixed price that starts at only $99. The member experience through Hooray Health is simple and centralized through their mobile app, where they offer “telemedicine”, a 24/7 bilingual medical concierge, pharmacy discounts, and more. It’s a fixed indemnity plan but feels like a regular PPO for basic coverage - and is 30% less than other similar plans on average.  They offer two plans: a basic plan and a “plus” plan. The basic plan covers a wellness visit, five annual visits to the retail clinic or urgent care, and a $5,000 accident policy. The “plus” option includes everything in the basic plan plus a hospital indemnity buy-up for an additional $60. Hooray Health is easy to deploy and makes joining a seamless experience for both individuals and large corporations.  Hooray Health has an exciting road ahead. Next year’s version of the mobile app will be even more integrated and supportive, and they’re working on formulating supplemental alternatives for high-deductible health plans. Hooray Health focuses on a segment of the population that is often overlooked when it comes to healthcare - part-time employees and low-income earners - and makes it so basic coverage is accessible, affordable, and easy for employers and employees alike.  Here’s a glance at what we discuss in this episode:  00:30 - Introducing Shane and Hooray Health 02:00 - Shane’s previous work in the industry and what inspired Hooray Health 05:45 - Why Shane believes we’re “functionally uninsured” as a country 08:00 - Employers need to manage their healthcare expenses like any other expense 09:30 - How Hooray Health works and who they serve 14:30 - The difference between Hooray Health indemnity plans and regular benefit plans  16:00 - The difference between the basic and “plus” plan 18:00 - How the Hooray Health concierge service works  20:20 - Information about their medical bill negotiation platform 21:30 - Pricing, how they track consumer satisfaction, and their growth since launching  24:45 - Who Hooray Health is for, how it can help reduce turnover, and where they provide coverage 29:30 - How Hooray Health connects and communicates with its members  31:00 - What to expect next year and why Hooray Health beats out the competition Resources Hooray Health Phone Number: 1-866-7HOORAY

Is There an Echo in Here? A Podcast About Echo & the Bunnymen

In this episode, we discuss the string section of Echo & the Bunnymen. When Shane finally remembers Will Sergeant's name, we explore Will’s early life and musical tastes that may or may not include: Yes, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and Velvet Underground. We struggle to keep sight of our subject who evades us with subtle texture and nuance. In frustration, we throw a Mother's of Invention record down the stairs and Shane shares memories of remaining seated during a Rolling Stones concert. Shane then compares his career and school trajectory to Will's and finds many commonalities. He shares a little wisdom regarding life in the "C stream" and lists, about 25 of the 40 jobs he had before becoming a "professional musician". We then go on to contemplate space travel with Les Pattinson and Shane does a deep dive analysis of his harmonic pallet. The episode closes with Courtney admitting her true feelings about The Doors and lamenting Ian McCulloch's thwarted art career.

We spend our time here thinking, dreaming, and asking questions about the future of AI, the talking internet, and how we’re reshaping our culture. You wouldn’t think paper guidebooks, the repositioning of a travel brand and the future of digital creative agencies would be Machine Yearning territory. But they are - when the meeting point is Daniel Houghton. Daniel is the CEO of Pyxl (that’s P-Y-X-L,) a Nashville-based digital marketing agency. For years, Daniel has operated right up at the edge of digital content design, build and measurement. Before joining Pyxl this year, Daniel was CEO of Lonely Planet, where he partnered with Amazon and Google so that travellers could access Lonely Planet products through the Alexa device and Google Home. The company launched a platform for digital videos with GoPro and did a ton of e-commerce. Under his leadership, Lonely Planet made Fast Company’s 2018 "Most Innovative Companies" List and he was a 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30. Now, Daniel is on the agency side and diving in to a new set of challenges as a leader, digital strategist and student of culture. When Shane from Assist sat down with Daniel, the news of his job move had just broken and this was his first interview as PYXL CEO. This is Machine Yearning, though, so this isn’t the typical arms-crossed-looking-manly-on-the-magazine-cover CEO interview. Hang out and enjoy.
