Send us a Text Message. This week I tell the stories of 9 feral children found surviving alone in the wilderness. Some even appear to have been cared for by wild animals - wolves, bears, dogs, and monkeys. Most walked on all fours, ate raw meat, and could only communicate in grunts, growls, and "wild cries." Some would never gain the ability to speak, burying their backstories in mystery to this day. Feral children have always fascinated us. Legends and myths are full of them - Romulus and Remus, Valentine and Orson, Amphion and Zethos, Moses, Oedipus, Mowgli. In examining these stories, an overarching theme emerges, one that forces us to re-examine what it means to be "civilized."Sources: BBC History Magazine "Raised by wolves: the history of feral children"History.com "6 Famous Wild Children From History""Savage Girls and Wild Boys: A History of Feral Children" reprinted in The GuardianIndia Today "During the last century, nearly 50 cases of wolf children reported in IndiaHistory Collection "10 Stories of Feral Children You Won't Find in Your History Books"University of Cambridge "The adventures of Sir Kinelm Digby: 17th century pirate, philosopher, and foodie"History Uncovered "Dina Sanichar"Daily Mail "Man raised by pack of stray dogs..."Support the show! Buy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaine

HF0, or Hacker Fellowship Zero, is a start-up accelerator that provides 12-week residencies for batches of fellows from 10 different start-ups. Their experience, which culminates in a demonstration day, is supposed to be the most productive three months of the fellows' lives. Dave Fontenot, one of HF0's founders, was inspired by the two years he spent living in monasteries in his 20s: While monastery life was materially ascetic, he found that it was luxurious in the freedom it gave residents to focus on the things that really mattered. And this year at the Archbishop's Mansion in San Francisco, the home of the fellows, almost everyone has been monastically focused on what has become the city's newest religion: artificial intelligence. The A.I. gospel had not yet spread in 2021, when Fontenot and his two co-founders, Emily Liu and Evan Stites-Clayton, started the accelerator. Even a year ago, when HF0 hosted a batch of fellows at a hotel in Miami, six out of the eight companies represented were cryptocurrency start-ups. But at the mansion in San Francisco, eight of the 10 companies in HF0's first batch this year were working on A.I.-based apps. That generative A.I. has largely supplanted crypto in the eyes of founders and venture capitalists alike is not exactly surprising. When OpenAI released ChatGPT late last year, it set off a new craze at a time when the collapsing crypto and tech markets had left many investors and would-be entrepreneurs adrift, unsure of where to put their capital and time. Suddenly users everywhere were realizing that A.I. could now respond to verbal queries with a startling degree of humanlike fluency. “Large language models have been around for a long time, but their uses were limited,” said Robert Nishihara, a co-founder of Anyscale, a start-up for machine-learning infrastructure. “But there's a threshold where they become dramatically more useful, and I think now it's crossed that.”This story was recorded by Audm. Varney the Vampire was a blood soaked gothic horror story serialised in cheap print over the course of a couple of years in the nineteenth century. The resulting "penny dreadful" tale spilled out of a large volume when it was finally published in book form. In spite of his comfort with crosses, daylight and garlic, Varney's capacity to reflect on his actions made him an early model for Dracula. Matthew Sweet explores why a work, so often overlooked, was so important to the development of the vampire genre. Roger Luckhurst is Professor in Modern and Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of Gothic: an illustrated history and editor of The Cambridge companion to Dracula. Joan Passey is a lecturer at the University of Bristol. She is the author of Cornish Gothic and editor of Cornish Horrors. And, she is a 2022 New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to turn research into radio. Sam George is an Associate Professor at the University of Hertfordshire and is the convener of the Open Graves, Open Minds Gothic research project. Her books include: In the Company of Wolves: Werewolves, Wolves, and Wild Children and Open Graves, Open Minds, Representations of the Vampire from the Enlightenment to the Present Day. WELCOME TO REITERMANIA. We welcome bassist Volkmar Weber aka Volk-Man, from German heavy metal outfit Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, onto IUF. The new and highly-anticipated album “Wilde Kinder” (translated to Wild Children) just dropped and we get the opportunity to speak with Volk-Man about the production processes that went behind their 12th album. Dropping 12 records in 25 years is a challenge within itself while keeping the sound fresh and original in that timespan. Volk-Man also takes a look at the chronology of the band and how they all have grown over the years as their dedicated fanbase has exponentially grown into a worldwide following. “Wilde Kinder” is quite the quick turnaround from their 2021 offering, “The Divine Horsemen”, and their sound as of late seems to be tighter and polished than ever before. And finally, Volk-Man weighs in on the War in Ukraine, as it has impacted many of the surrounding countries like Germany and others around the world. Times are changing, and times are moving forward, but not without struggle. In the end, Volk-Man is grateful for the chance to continue playing the music he loves. It's thrashy, heavy, and full of all the headbanging any metal fan would want - and to give it a traditional sense, it's sung in their native tongue of German. Tune in to our conversation with Volk-Man now and be sure to buy and stream “Wilde Kinder,” the new album from Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, out now worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.Stay connected with Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, visit: https://reitermania.de/, https://www.instagram.com/reitermania/ and https://www.facebook.com/ReitermaniaStay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

As parents, Andy and Shawn have brought their children into their adventurous lifestyle. Whether it's dissecting snakes at the park, handling tarantulas, or learning how to take safe risks, Andy and Shawn have intentionally stoked a wildness in their kids instead of teaching it out of them. And through this wildness, their kids have taught them to let go and enjoy what is. The post 18: Raising Wild Children appeared first on Bristlecone Firesides.

A quote from Nicolette Sowder describes Chris Molloy to me 'Give me the wild children with their bare feet and sparkling eyes', Chris describes herself as having been a wild child, she became a mother while she was still at school. Having a child so young presented many challenges that Chris overcame, she went to college and started work in the financial sector and then in recruitment and she got married and had more children. Chris loved going to yoga classes and a few years ago she trained as a yoga teacher and she now has a very successful teaching practice using her skills and time in the business sector to help her with her teaching practice. Chris teaches online and when there are no covid restrictions she loves to teach outdoors in parks, in studios, in companies and in colleges. She also is involved in a new program with the national maternity hospital for young teenage mothers. We talk “going wild” - from camping (and the best crumpets ever), the best food markets - in Adelaide, Sydney, Byron Bay and elsewhere - making fermented foods with kids and long into our old age, and cooking food from scratch - as well as creating communities around us. In this episode we look at the remarkable recent changes in the way many of us now eat, turning to real food and searching for community amidst this pandemic. Magdalena talks about her food philosophy, and the passion for home cooking that she shares with her husband - Three Blue Ducks chef Darren Robertson. Magdalena offers shortcuts to feeding kids while maintaining that connection with your food providers. We talk emergency food for when the kids are at your feet and it’s impossible to cook from scratch.
