It's been nearly a year since the wake of D23 where we learned that the Rivers of America, the Liberty Belle, and Tom Sawyer Island would be changed out into a new off road Cars experience. The way we learned that news was troublesome--hiding it from the official D23 presentation. But even if they had been more transparent about it, it would still be hard to lose. I've come to terms as I've shared in previous podcasts what's working about what lies ahead for the Rivers of America. I think ultimately it will be a well-received set of experiences when it all comes together. But I couldn't help but be really melancholy about saying goodbye to the river for the last time. I'll share with you what went through my mind, and some of the really wonderful--even sweet memories I have from these attractions. I'll talk about what else is happening currently in both Liberty Square and Frontierland, particularly with the soft reopening of Hall of Presidents, and then I'll end with suggestions of where you can still find the spirit of this experience elsewhere--and it isn't at Disneyland. So stay with us as we bid adieu to The Rivers of America, the Liberty Belle and Tom Sawyer Island.

In this episode of Hangin' at the Hangar Bar, we take a look back at one of the smartest, funniest, and most underappreciated live shows Disney has ever done: Great Moments in History (But Only the American Parts)—the Muppet-filled masterpiece that used to liven up Liberty Square with a mix of chaos, charm, and Sam Eagle's booming sense of patriotic duty.We unpack why the show worked so well, speculate wildly about why it disappeared, and debate whether something so clever could survive in today's Disney (or cultural) landscape. Spoiler: we get a little spicy. From cost-cutting to crowd control to the inevitable reality that people love to ruin nice things—we don't hold back.We also pitch some reimagined versions we'd love to see, including Sam Eagle delivering nightly fireworks reviews with the seriousness of a national security briefing.Audio Note: We had a Great Moment in Microphone Failure during this one. While AI did its best to clean it up, it definitely left its fingerprints on the entire episode. It's listenable—just not our cleanest. Thanks for sticking with us, even when the tech gets a little… revolutionary.

Send us a textEvery Disney vacation creates memories, but what if you could bring home something truly one-of-a-kind? Forget the standard t-shirts and magnets – we're diving deep into the world of personalized Disney souvenirs and the artisans who create them.Vanessa and Kris explore Disney's lesser-known treasures, from personalized glass ornaments hand-crafted at Arribas Brothers to custom parasols painted in Liberty Square. These aren't just souvenirs; they're heirlooms that capture moments in time. We discuss how to design your own glass keepsake at Epcot's Germany Pavilion, create a personalized leather bracelet in Animal Kingdom, or build a lightsaber that's uniquely yours at Galaxy's Edge. Whether your budget allows for pressed pennies or custom droids, we cover unique options across every price point. The highlight of our journey is our conversation with Miss Beth from Miss Beth's Silhouettes, who began creating silhouettes at Magic Kingdom in 1989 and now offers this classic art form through her own business. She shares heartwarming stories of generations returning to find her, silhouettes from decades past carefully preserved in family albums. There's something magical about these simple black profiles that capture not just a likeness, but a moment in time – a child's first Disney trip, a family reunion, or a special celebration. As Miss Beth explains, these aren't just souvenirs; they're connections between generations of Disney lovers. We wrap up with fascinating Disney collectible trivia – would you believe a hand-drawn Disneyland map once sold for over $700,000? While most of us won't be bidding on original attraction vehicles, the value of thoughtfully chosen, personalized souvenirs goes far beyond their price tag. They become touchstones to magical memories, reminding us that the most precious thing we bring home from Disney isn't what we buy – it's how those treasures make us feel long after the vacation ends.Miss Beth on FacebookMiss Beth on Instagram @bethpray2Use the code "dislove10" to save 10%! So much to unwrap from Saturday, what with the thousands of 'No Kings Day' protests across the country - dozens just in Georgia - along with the Trump-coveted military parade and the shocking double-homicide in Minnesota. In Atlanta, estimates of 8,000 - 10,000 protestors descended on Liberty Square near the state capitol where activists listened to impassioned speeches and brought their "a-game" in signage. As was the case in most of the nation, metro Atlanta and Georgia protests were peaceful, but in Dekalb Count's Brookhaven and Doraville, police utilized flash bangs and teargas to disperse protestors, leading to some injuries and chaos - plus the arrest of a well-known El Salvadoran influencer/journalist working legally in the U.S. It seems there's a pattern: protests are largely peaceful and uneventful until tempers flare ... from behind the riot gear. Evidence of this on both MSNBC and CNN bears that out. Georgia state representative Ruwa Romman, meanwhile, addressed a 'No Kings' gathering in Philadelphia and I shared that on this podcast. ------Unfortunately, a deadly double-homicide shocked the nation awake that same day, with a Minnesota Democratic state legislator and her husband being shot & killed, along with another legislator and his spouse shot, as well. A near-two day manhunt ensued while right wing media sought to cast the assassin as a "Walz-appointed Democrat." They were partially right in that Walz had re-appointed him to a bipartisan business board, but Vance Boelter was no Democrat; in fact, his roommate says he'd be insulted to be portrayed as such.

Disney almost had a Legend of Sleepy Hollow ride, in not one, but TWO different parks. In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we unearth some rare concepts for an Ichabod Crane-themed attraction by Imagineering—ideas that, much to our chagrin, never saw the light of day. We begin with a brief tour through the history of the Sleepy Hollow portion of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, highlighting some incredible concept art by Mary Blair. From there, we head over to Walt Disney World to investigate what happened to Ichabod in both Fantasyland and Liberty Square. Along the way, we explore architectural influences rooted in literary history, uncover the origins of a classic Haunted Mansion song, and learn the backstory behind a popular invisible dog joke. Kate also shares details about a little-known, never-realized land once proposed for Disneyland. Meanwhile, Kirk terrifies us with a bizarre attraction from Hong Kong and reveals some shadowy concepts that reflect his deepest wishes for Liberty Square. We end the episode watching the Headless Horseman ride into the sunset—along with our hopes for what could have been (and may never be) when it comes to seeing this eerie attraction brought to life in the Disney parks.Join us LIVE on YouTube most Thursdays at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - It's time to take a leisurely cruise around the Rivers of America as we head to Magic Kingdom to ride the Liberty Square Riverboat on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Attraction audio recorded on June 6, 2024. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we're going to hop aboard the Liberty Belle for a cruise on the Liberty Square Riverboat. The Walt Disney World website describes this attraction saying: Cruise the scenic Rivers of America aboard an authentic steam-powered paddle wheeler.  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the thrill level describes the attraction as being a slow ride. Before we shove off, here are five fast facts about the Liberty Square Riverboat in Magic Kingdom. 1. The Liberty Square Riverboat attraction opened at Walt Disney World on October 2, 1971.  The first boat that served was called the Admiral Joe Fowler, named after Joe Fowler who was in charge of construction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.  In 1973, a second river boat was added named the Richard F. Irvine.  In 1986, that boat was renamed to Liberty Belle which still runs the Rivers of America today.  An interesting note is that the original boat, the Admiral Joe Fowler was damaged in a dry dock incident and was retired in 1980.   2. The Liberty Belle is a steam-powered sternwheeler replica.  Sternwheeler means there is one paddle wheel on the rear or stern of the ship.  A steam engine pulled water from the river to turn into steam to power the paddlewheel. 3.  The Liberty Belle is 47 feet tall and features four decks for guests to visit during the ride. 4. During the 17 minute trip, a narrator, in the in the voice of Mark Twain points out the sights guests see as they travel down the river including an early American settlement, a Native American village and Big Thunder Mountain. 5. The captain on the narration track is named Horace Bixby who was a real riverboat captain who mentored Samuel Clemons aka Mark Twain. Let's head to Liberty Square for a ride on the Liberty Belle.  After the ride audio I'll give you my thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphone put them on now as we ride Magic Kingdom's Liberty Square Riverboat! Taiwan's voters have chosen pro-sovereignty candidate William Lai as their next president, a result which has angered China. It means Mr Lai's party has secured an unprecedented third consecutive presidential term at a time when the Taiwanese people are debating how best to deal with Beijing. China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the end of the civil war in 1949, when the defeated Nationalist government fled to the island as the Communists under Mao Zedong swept to power. So, what do the election results reveal about how the Taiwanese people view themselves in relation to their much larger neighbour? And do they make a conflict between China, Taiwan and its allies more or less likely? Academy Award nominated filmmaker Katja Esson's RAZING LIBERTY SQUARE is a character-driven verité documentary that weaves personal stories in and out of the larger social justice narrative on Climate Gentrification. The stories originate at the intersection of race, climate, and socio-economic gentrification and examines the assumptions regarding who matters—and who doesn't—and about land and who controls it. As rising seas threaten Miami's luxurious beachfront, wealthy property owners are pushing inland to higher ground. The historically black neighborhood of Liberty City, which has been ignored by developers and policy-makers alike, for generations is 12 feet above sea level, has now becomes more attractive to the wealthy with each rising tide. At the heart of Liberty City is the Liberty Square housing projects, the first segregated public housing project in the South. New Liberty Square: a $300 million mixed income development. The dramatic changes happening in Miami's Liberty Square are a looking glass for contemporary issues of wide-scale significance: the affordable housing crisis, the impact of systemic racism and climate gentrification. Miami is experiencing sea level rise before the rest of the country. What is happening in Liberty Square is a prescient story of what is to come, and strategies put to the test here are being closely observed by the rest of the world. Director / Producer Katja Esson (Ferry Tales, Poetry of Resilience) joins us for a conversation on how she came to know about the history and looming fate of Liberty Square, why ringing the bell on relationship between rising sea levels, systemic racism, affordable housing and Climate Gentrification should scare the hell out of every community in here in America and beyond.
