Does this 2023 Miami Hurricanes team have similarities to the late 90's, when the foundations of the 2001 national championship team were being built? Host Alex Donno and The Truth Teller Bruce Warner chat with legendary former Canes assistant coach Don Soldinger. Don was part of the coaching staff that built the 2001 juggernaut. Soldinger describes how well Mario Cristobal is doing to rebuild The U and how he seems to have gotten his coordinator hires correct the second time around.  Soldinger recalls coaching some of the top running backs in UM history like Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore and Najee Davenport. Soldinger sees plenty of promise in Miami's current backfield of Henry Parrish, Ajay Allen, Mark Fletcher, Don Chaney, Christopher Johnson and TreVonte' Citizen. Soldinger, who keeps very close tabs on UM football, explains why he believes Cristobal is on track for bringing the program back to prominence.  Join our EXCLUSIVE SMS texting community and chat with Donno any time by clicking this link: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncanes. From there each were asked thoughts on a variety topics including Tony White's 3-3-5 defense, thoughts on the offensive line performance. how the tight ends played and who stood out from the secondary.  After a brief pause in the action the show resumes with more recruiting talk as each of Nebraska's last three commitments are discussed. Things start with Ian Flynt before moving to Willis McGahee and finally Caden VerMaas.  Then the trio discusses a handful of recruits who came in for the visit, where things might be sitting for those individuals and how it has all shaped up for Nebraska as it heads into what figures to be a busy evaluation period.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. After finishing off the four remaining positions Patrick goes back to the previous ones and they review them all. Here's a spoiler alert----Joe quite often disagrees with how players are ranked at each position and bickering frequently ensues. Quarterbacks Coach / Passing Game Coordinator Frank Ponce is in his first season as a member of the Miami Hurricanes Football coaching staff, where he serves as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Ponce arrives in Coral Gables after spending the 2021 season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Appalachian State. Ponce, a Miami native with deep roots in south Florida, previously worked under head coach Mario Cristobal from 2007-12. “I am fired up to welcome Coach Ponce back home to Miami,” Cristobal said upon Ponce's hiring. “Coach Ponce has a reputation as an elite offensive coach whose groups rank among the nation's best. He is a tremendous recruiter and talent developer, and his units have always been defined by their toughness, their balance and their explosiveness. I know he will continue to build on that track record at home with the Hurricanes.” In Ponce's second stint at App State in 2021, Mountaineers Chase Brice set a single-season program record for passing yards (3,337) and the Mountaineers extended their FBS-leading streak of consecutive years with a 1,000-yard rusher to 10 while averaging 34.5 points per game. The offense helped App State post a 10-win regular season and win the Sun Belt's East Division title. “I'm truly excited just being a part of this organization and this University, especially with Coach Cristobal,” Ponce said upon his hiring. “I've worked with him before. I know what his vision is and everyone wants to be part of a championship program and he's going to bring that to the city of Miami. “I'm excited. My family is here. I am from Miami and I grew up rooting for the Hurricanes. And now I am here wearing ‘The U' on my chest. And I can't tell you how excited and happy I am to be here back in the city of Miami, but most importantly, with University of Miami football.” Ponce was App State's co-offensive coordinator (passing game) and quarterbacks coach for six seasons from 2013-18. In 2019, Ponce joined the Louisville Cardinals' staff where he served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for two seasons before returning to App State. After helping lead App State to a 48-16 record and three consecutive Sun Belt championships during his five FBS seasons in Boone, Ponce oversaw the 2019 development of Louisville quarterback and new full-time starter Malik Cunningham, who set the school record with a passing efficiency rating of 194.45 — a number that would have ranked No. 2 nationally with one more pass attempt. Cunningham threw for 4,682 yards with 42 touchdowns, rushed for 1,091 yards with 13 touchdowns and completed 63.6 percent of his throws in his two seasons with Ponce, becoming the only Louisville quarterback to ever have four touchdown passes of at least 75 yards. Three-year App State starter Zac Thomas was a relatively unknown commodity replacing record-breaking quarterback Taylor Lamb back in 2018, and Ponce helped Thomas make an immediate splash as a first-year starter who developed into the Sun Belt's Offensive Player of the Year with 2,039 passing yards, 504 rushing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns and just six interceptions during an 11-2 season. Ponce excelled as a high school coach in his home state from 1992-2006 before joining Cristobal's staff at FIU as the wide receivers coach from 2007-12. Ponce left FIU in 2013 to become the Mountaineers' passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under Ponce's mentorship, Lamb finished his App State career as the school and Sun Belt record holder with 90 touchdown passes. The only FBS quarterbacks in 2017 with career totals of at least 9,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards were Lamb, Ohio State's J.T. Barrett and Louisville's Lamar Jackson. With 27 touchdown passes and six interceptions as a senior, Lamb had the third-best season for an App State quarterback in terms of touchdown-to-interception ratio, and he led the conference in passing efficiency during three of his four seasons. As a first-year App State assistant, one season before Lamb became the starter as a redshirt freshman, Ponce directed the Southern Conference's second-ranked passing attack (271.8 yards per game). He helped quarterback Kameron Bryant set a school record for single-season completion percentage (71.2) and throw for 2,713 yards even though Bryant came into the season with just 13 snaps under his belt. Ponce is also renowned for his recruiting ability, as he was named the Sun Belt's top recruiter by ESPN.com in 2010. He coached six of the top 10 receivers in FIU history during his six seasons with the Golden Panthers. His most notable pupil at FIU was three-time All-American T.Y. Hilton, now a standout with the Indianapolis Colts. Prior to FIU, Ponce was one of the top high school coaches in football-rich south Florida, serving as the head coach and offensive coordinator at tradition-laden Miami Senior High from 2004-06 and the head coach at Coral Reef High from 2002-03. He began his coaching career with stints as an assistant at La Progresiva Presbyterian School (offensive coordinator – 1992), Coral Gables High (quarterbacks/wide receivers – 1993-96), Miami Northwestern High (quarterbacks – 1998), Miami Central High (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks – 1999-2000) and Miami Killian High (offensive coordinator – 2001). As a coach at Miami Central, he mentored Willis McGahee, who went on to become an All-America running back at the University of Miami and a two-time NFL Pro Bowler. Ponce enjoyed a decorated playing career as a quarterback at Miami Senior, where he was the team MVP and a finalist for the 1988 Miami Herald Hispanic Athlete of the Year Award. He went on to become the starting quarterback for two years at Arizona Western College, where he earned an associate's degree in arts in 1990. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Florida International in 1997. Ponce and his wife, Christine, are the parents of two daughters, Isabel and Leah, and a pair of sons, Frankie and Lucas.

He discusses bouncing back from 2 ACL tears in college to competing against our host Bryant McFadden in that heated Miami vs. Florida State rivalry. The guys then bounce to the pros as Gore explains how the 49ers benefited from Jim Harbaugh's arrival and if his former coach will ever return to the NFL. What is the one thing that Frank Gore would change about Super Bowl 47? Our guest gives a great answer! He also details Colin Kaepernick taking over in San Fran, his case for Canton and what it's like seeing his son, Frank Gore Jr., excel at the college level at Southern Miss. Then it's time to talk the business at hand this weekend. Frank previews his boxing match vs Deron Williams and also if he'd entertain coming back to the NFL after this fight! Another week, another LSU Tiger on All Things Covered. Ryan Clark shares the same college as Patrick Peterson and once shared the same dorm room at Steelers Training Camp with Bryant McFadden (34:15). The guys chat about those LSU days, RC playing safety alongside Sean Taylor and Troy Polamalu and the top safeties in the league today. But first, we unfortunately have to recap the unceremonious end to the Arizona Cardinals season (1:30). Pat breaks down how big a blow it was to lose Kyler Murray on the opening drive, the job the defense did vs. backup John Wolford and some questionable calls and no calls surrounding DeAndre Hopkins. P2 then sums up the season as a whole and addresses his future as he is set to become a free agent this offseason. Could Sunday have been his final game in a Cardinals uniform? The guys then tackle news from around the league (19:30), including Doug Pederson's curious and somewhat obvious tanking effort to gift wrap Washington the NFC East. Should players lose respect over that move? We also examine what it's like to go through a coaching change and look ahead to the most dangerous teams in the playoffs. Next, it's time to welcome our guest, Ryan Clark (34:15). Ryan details what led to him signing with the Tigers and then credits Pat for creating the legacy of 'DBU'. RC played for Nick Saban in college and knew 20 years ago that he was destined to become one of the greatest coaches ever. The conversation shifts to Ryan's time in the league and the relationship he formed with Sean Taylor. He believes Taylor could have gone down as one of the greatest safeties of all time. We revisit the torturous 2007 Steelers Training Camp led by Mike Tomlin and a life-changing incident that happened to Ryan in Denver later that season. RC is known for his big hits, but there was none bigger than the one he put on Willis McGahee in the 2008 AFC Championship Game. The memory is foggy due to the play, but BMac clearly remembers. We finish with superlatives and learn the player Ryan wishes he could have laid a hit on and the best player he ever played with!  'All Things Covered' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Castbox and wherever else you listen to podcasts.  Follow Pat on Instagram and Twitter Follow BMac on Instagram and Twitter Produced by: @E_DeBerardinis Visit the All Things Covered YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/allthingscovered For more NFL coverage from CBS Sports, visit https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/ To hear more from the CBS Sports Podcast Network, visit https://www.cbssports.com/podcasts/ Learn more about your ad choices. Pat and the guys also dive into some World News with Nick as they discuss Clinton Portis and a few other players accused of defrauding the NFL’s league health program with false claims amounting to around $4 million, and OBJ telling everyone that he can that he wants out of Cleveland and for certain teams to come get him. Later, 2x Pro Bowler, 2002 Heisman Trophy finalist, and former Running Back for the Bills, Ravens, and Broncos, Willis McGahee, joins the show. He gives his opinion on players sitting out bowl games in college in hopes of avoiding an injury that will derail their NFL draft stock, as no one is more intimate with that situation that anyone else. Willis also gives his thoughts on Lamar Jackson, why he is so dangerous, and what makes him such a threat. Willis and Pat also chat about his time in Buffalo and the story behind why he had an ugly exit from Buffalo, and who he thinks is going to win the Super Bowl (36:13-46:33). Pat also reacts to Roger Goodell’s comments about no changes coming to the playoff structure in the near future, and what Pat was trying to do to help get retired NFL players benefits, gives his thoughts on Jacoby Brissett and why he has started to slow down a little bit in the back half of this season, and what he thinks Chris Ballard will do for the Colts’ roster in the offseason. Lastly, the guys chat about the hottest issue in the office right now.. there is a snack kleptomaniac in the building, and Pat gets to the bottom of it.
